I'm leaving the job of chief photographer up to DH.

Since I may not have my wits about me immediately after the birth, I'd love some ideas for pictures. I want to make a list to review with DH so he doesn't miss anything crucial like his first bath or something.

Anyone willing to post their pics for ideas?
I would hate to miss any of these first precious moments.

TIA!

Make sure he gets a good closeup of the baby's face. DH isn't the best photographer, so we didn't get one. :( My sister has a really nice one, and now I've been begging her and begging her to get me a copy.

I would also get the baby being cleaned up on the warmer thing- again closeup. (DH took all of our pictures from a mile away) And also of the baby being weighed. We did get those things on video, so I can live with not having photos, but you may want them. The nurses took him out of my room for his first bath, so we didn't get any of that. Get a nice photo of the three of you. I also wish I had taken a pic of him in the hospital bassinette in my room. You may also want a pic of the three of you getting ready to leave the hospital.

We didn't get a photo of the 3 of us with the midwife who delivered him and I wish that we had.

I really like our bassinette one with the details of the birth photo.... We also took a photo of the three of us as we were leaving the hospital. And another I'd recommend:

* if your room has a calendar on the wall - ours had the type where each page is one big date - get a photo of the baby with that page (ripped off). We actually used a photo like that for our announcement.

* I also laid out all DD's going-home clothes (she had a lot - it was mid-Jan. in MA) in the order I was going to put them on her on the other bed in my room the night before - I know I was crazy  - and took a picture of that (the "before") and with them all on her.

I'm trying to remember the ones we got. Honestly, the whole process goes so fast, your dh really won't have time to check off a list (even if only mentally).

Baby immediately after birth on my chest
Being weighed and getting dressed.
Picture of the #'s on the scale
Several shots of the couple days afterwards - dd with me, dd with dh, dd with each visitor, all 3 of us, dd with just my family, dd with my sister and I, and then repeat for dh's family.
DD in her going home outfit by herself and with us
Dd in her carseat just before we left the room

I wish I would have gotten one of the first times she nursed. For whatever reason it never occured to me to get one, and to this day I still don't have one. Need to get on that. Also would have like one with dd and our AWESOME L&D nurse, and another one with our dr., but again it never occured to me.

The baby on the scale right after he/she is born
a close up of the babys hand holding on your finger
a close up of the baby's foot
The person who delivers your baby holding him/her
The three of you together (1st family pic!)
The nurses taking the baby's footprint (if they do that at your hospital)

This reminded me of another one... a close up of the baby's wrist or ankle with the hospital band on it. My sister took that and it's one of my favorite photos.

The 3 of you together (1st family pic). I wanted one but with all the chaos, it didn't happen. Our first pic as a family is when DS was a wk old and not that great of a photo.
Also a good going home photo. We didn't think of it until we were at the car. It was supe humid and the lens on the camera fogged up. would have been better if we took it in the hospital.

I wished that we had gotten a picture of DS with the OB that delivered him. That's how much I love my OB!

Make sure to have your camera in the delivery room (even if you have a c-section). The hospital staff are usually really nice and will snap pictures for you. We had a c-section and so my family wasn't there to take the first pics. The hospital took one of DH cutting the cord and of her on the scale for the first time. Later we also got one of DH changing his very first diaper (boy does he look scared).

Also, we didn't want to video the birth, but we did want the sound of her first cry. So, we turned the video on and pointed it at the wall. It's really neat to be able to hear that first cry. You will never get to live through that again. After that, the tech picked up the camera and took video of DH cutting the cord and of her getting cleaned up. I will always treasure it.

Good luck

DS came a month early and very fast. I only was able to hold him for about 15 minutes before he was wheeled to the nursery and eventually to the NICU. I didn't have him in my room anymore (he ended up staying for 2 weeks) so we didn't get many photo's, but I treasure the few we did get.

Just a word of advice about the hospital shots: make sure you personally get a chance to look at them *closely* before your H posts them or sends them to friends and family. Our nurse didn't think twice about snapping a shot with my legs still in the stirrups and H "didn't notice" before he posted it on snapfish. Luckily I caught it a few minutes later and was able to crop it. However, having since been treated to a couple other photos with friends' hoo-hahs in them, I just always want to pass the word.
