Nude man beats car with pigeon
SUFFOLK, Va., July 18 (UPI) -- Two Whaleyville, Va., residents were stunned when a naked man accosted their car in their driveway and began hitting it with their pet pigeon.
The couple had just pulled into their driveway Friday night when Juan Lopez, 30, of Virginia Beach, appeared naked and began striking their car with the bird, the Virginian Pilot reported Tuesday.
They fled to a neighbor's house and called police who found the suspect in nearby woods.
A Suffolk, Va., police spokeswoman told the newspaper Lopez was "obviously having some sort of issues that night."
He had allegedly gotten into the homeowners' bird cages that held 15 chickens and four pigeons. Four of the birds were killed.
Lopez was charged with burglary, destruction of property and larceny of poultry.
That poor bird! How awful. :(

That poor man. It sounds like he had some real mental health crisis going on.

Oh wow! that's hilarious.
Sorry...not trying to be snarky here, but I don't find anything remotely hilarious about a mentally ill person attacking someone and using a helpless animal as their weapon of choice.

You took the words right out of my mouth.

OMG! What an awful thing. That must have been so scary and horrible for the pet owners. I can't even imagine. :(

larceny of poultry
Who knew this was a crime? And what about the pigeons, is there no larceny law for them? And yes, this was about the only thing funny I found about this story.
I wonder why he was not charged with animal cruelty?

Maybe that's what "larceny of poultry" is?

Wow...what a sad situation all around.
Not hilarious...at all. Not even moderately funny, in fact.
I don't think so, jnettie. Larceny is a crime with elements that revolve around theft. Animal cruelty does not require theft at all. They can't be the same.

Yeah, realized that later, when I was thinking straight. Maybe it's because the birds are viewed as property first? It's not animal cruelty it's destruction of property?

How horrible! Those poor people.
However, I will say that the headline "Nude man beats car with pigeon" had me laughing. Not that I think any of it is actually funny, it just sounds really funny.

The headline made me think of Monty Python's Dead Parrot sketch, but then I read the article. :(

Jnettie- the bird is definitely property, but so is a dog. Either qualifies as an animal, so I still think he should have been charged with animal cruelty. It would depend on the state's statute, though. If it requires intent, and this guy was really out of his mind (which it sure seems like he was) maybe they feel they are better off not charging him with it.
