DH and I finished opening our gifts last night. The funniest gift was a candle holder with a chicken on it. I guess family doesn't know that I'm terrified of chickens! I showed it to him and warned him that everyone that comes into our house is going to comment on it...and will probably laugh. We do have it on display..after all, this one can't attack me with its evil claws ;)
Anybody else receive funny gifts?

Hmmm... I think about the funnies we recieved was a boxed set of DVDs... they were all sci fi horror type movies. There's nothing wrong with them, and they came from a friend of DH's who is a struggling actor (he had a small part in "Elf"!), which was neat, but they were... well, DVDs, kwim?

I got two funny gifts actually...
$50 worth of Baskin Robins gift certificates (in denominations of $2!!) - I like ice cream as much as the next person, but this this a strange gift
2 Live Lobsters shipped from Maine (I'm in CA!). I made DH cook them b/c they freak me out! But they were delicious!

The funniest one that we got was from good firends of ours and DH co-worker. We got two gift certificates from them. One to Home Depot and the other to McDonald's!
DH loved it! Well, he was in charge of the HD gift registry, plus he always stops at McDonald's with this one co-wroker when they are out working on the bridges. I thought it was neat (even if people thought I was dorky for saying so!) :)
pixiecat - lol about the baskin robbin gift certs. what would possess someone to give something like that??? though, i would have been tickled pink about bc i am always looking for an excuse to eat ice cream. though, i would preferred gift certs to cold stone creamery.

We got a pair of these strange blue "fishy" glass vases:
http://images.snapfish.com/3444545923232%7Ffp63%3Dot%3E2329%3D%3A%3B9%3D493%3 DXROQDF%3E23238%3A947%3C665ot1lsi
They're interesting & appear to be good quality vases...but they're not our style AT ALL. I was able to give one of them away to a friend who thought it was neat, but now I can't figure out what to do with the other. I even listed it on eBay recently...but unfortunately nobody bidded on it.
P.S. The Baskin & Robbin gift certificate gift made me laugh too - but I think the live lobsters, while an odd wedding gift, are pretty creative!

Maybe we should try to trade funny wedding gifts! I have a feeling I'll be wth the chicken for awhile though....maybe you can arrange a "white elephant" gift exchange at your work for the holidays...

One of DH's uncles gave us a $50 gift card to Shell and a $50 gift card to Red Lobster. When we opened it, I thought, "Oh, that's nice." Not strange, I guess, but a little out of the ordinary. But they were the first gifts we used! We didn't go on honeymoon right after, and since our wedding was in St. Louis but we live in Chicago (originally from St. Louis), we had to drive back after the wedding (hello, Shell gift card- we filled up the car on the way, then filled up both vehicles upon arriving home, so we each had full tanks), and then we were starving and neither of us felt like cooking (hello, Red Lobster gift card! :) ). I ended up being SO grateful for them.
I was sooooooo excited as I opened a gift and the box was for a Pampered Chef batter bowl with lid (yeah, I know, I've got problems. ;) ). I opened the box just to look at it, and when I opened it up....instead of the batterbowl, there were FROG salt and pepper shakers. They were made with gemstones (faux), and they were just unbelievably odd... the strangest thing was that they were from a couple that we have never heard of and neither had our families... But the card was addressed to us, so....

I already posted but I dont know how I forgot this one. We got one of those Smithsonian singing bird clocks. You know a different bird chirps every hour.....  DH actually put batteries in it so we could listen to it. Then he forgot about them and I would hear random bird chirping. NOw it sits in our office closet without the batteries.
How do you thank people for these gifts? I mean how in the world do you phrase the note so it sounds like you really appreciated it.

My uncle and his second wife live in Connecticut and have an apt. in NYC. They are the picture of decorum and class. DH and I were very, very surprised when we opened this HUGE BOX that they sent us and found two very odd looking grey lamps with big blue birds of paradise looking flowers painted all over them! In addition, they included lampshades which were ivory!???
They have never seen our house and really don't know a thing about our personal taste. I thought it was funny that they gave us a gift that was so 'unique' to a specific decor (although which decor that is, I'm am still wondering... heh heh)
Luckily, my mom LOVED the lamps (huh) when she came to visit a few months after the wedding, and she took them back home with her when she left! :)

Yay! At least you found a good "home" for them! ;)
I agree that it's odd when people give a gift that is a certain style when they don't know you very well &/or have never been to your house to see your decor preferences, etc. Oh well - it's the thought that counts, right?

Sarah - Oh yes definately! It was a wonderful thought that they had! :) The lamps were actually well-made (hand crafted and all) so I know that they really thought about us. It was just funny that they gave us something so specific to a particular decor! :) And yes, it's great that the lamps have now found a happy home :D

Nylons,
I can't help but wonder if the pair of lamps are valuable (especially since you noted that your uncle has exquisite taste). Maybe your Mom should have them appraised.
Just a thought.

07-17-2005, 01:27 PM
daydreamer - Yes, that's a good thought! They are so, how shall we say it, unappetizing to the eye, that I never even considered what they might be worth. I should clarify that nobody (not even my mom) liked the way they looked. My mom just loved them because they came from her brother and his wife. KWIM? She doesn't give a rip about 'things matching' or 'decor' or stuff like that so she willingly took them to spare them from living their lives in our garage! heh heh
However, you bring up a really great point! Will talk to my mom today and suggest that! Good thought! Thanks! :D

This wasn't a wedding gift to me, but to my FSIL & FBIL - they got a card that read "Happy Birthday, from two of your classiest friends" - and it was signed by 4 people. It had the couple's name on it too. So strange. :)

My DH's aunt and uncle gave us a large, wood carved clock with wolves coming out of it. We saw it and just started laughing so hard. We ended up hanging in in my in-laws house as a joke and they gave it to a friend of theirs who thought it was cool. At least somebody is enjoying it!
We also received two white, shabby chic picture frames. Nice, but not my style at all..... and they smelled like skunk. They got regifted to some friends of ours who got married shortly after we did. We put them in a bag with no names and left them at the gift table never to be smelled by us again. Before you think we are too terrible, we also gave them a real gift and our friends have a good sense of humor.

We got a $50 gift card to Starbucks. At first we thought it was a little odd, but it's turned out to be an awesome present. Every Sunday we walk up to Starbucks together with the newspaper and sit there for like an hour, drinking coffee, reading the paper and talking. It's some of the best "togetherness" time we have all week, actually!
Also, a family friend of my DH gave us an original painting (he's an "amateur artist"). It's totally not our style whatsoever, but it's the thought that counts, right? It's now on display in our living room and it kinda makes me laugh every time I see it.

Three of my mom’s cousins chipped in and bought us a purple Tiffany-style unicorn lamp.
Also, this isn’t a wedding gift, but I have to share. One of DH’s relatives gave his mom a wood clock (like a cross-section of a tree trunk) with the names of DH’s parents and siblings carved on to it. Except it’s not really carved, more like clumsily burned. They’re in place of the numbers, but DH has 8 family members, so it doesn’t quite work out right. It’s like, “Look! It’s half past Tom!”

We too got a gift card to Starbucks and we both absolutely HATE coffee. But it worked out b/c we Honeymooned in Seattle where the first Starbucks was built and we both got a non coffee drink to take our picture with.
The oddest thing we got was from my Great Grandmother (96) who was convinced she wouldn't live to see our wedding. It was a set of three ceramic candle holders in the shape of flowers. I'm talking the hideous ones that don't match and come in all different colors. She apparantly had been planning on giving them to me since I was 16......YIKES!! But like someone mentioned I'm tempted to get them appraised since they're so old and most anything she gives as gifts has been passed down in the family.

I'll admit that I've GIVEN a funniest wedding gift.
I have a long-time friend who was getting married and because of life circumstances was going to arrive in town literally two hours before her wedding and leave two hours after the reception. I felt horrible and really wanted to put some creative effort into her wedding gift. So I decided to put together a collection of gifts for entertaining their new neighbors in their new home.
I bought a board game they registered for, a set of wine glasses, and a Tiffany cake platter. But I needed something else to tie it all together. So I also wrapped and gave them a bottle of wine, a box of cake mix, and a tub of frosting!
My friend called me up immediately after opening the gift and said it was the best wedding gift they had received and they laughed hysterically over it. Apparently, her conservative mother was not so amused. Oh well... only with a very good friend would I do that :)

we received a set of authentic antlerware.
this included a giant serving fork, spoon.... and even a pie knife! they all had antlers as the handles! it was really gross.
and we're both vegetarians!

i had a another friend who made a crossword puzzle inside our wedding card as his "gift". then, 4 months after our wedding... he became engaged... and 1 month later a soap dish arrived. ? i wanted to re-gift him the antlerware, but my husband stopped me!

I thought that the gift was bad enough, then you had to throw that in! It made me LOL!
We received a whole kitchen accessory kit of roosters. It came with 3 canisters, with roosters painted on them and the lids shaped as roosters, a utensil holder, kitchen towels, and oven mitts. They were hideous.
A couple of friends of mine got married after dating for something like 15 years and living together forever. They had a very small civil ceremony and then went to a local bar to celebrate. I wasn't invited to the wedding (which was fine) and they didn't want any gifts. I felt like I had give them something so I bought two of the drinking helmet things (You know the ones that hold a beer on either side of the helmet and have straws that come down to your mouth) and decorated them for the bride and groom. They laughed so hard when the opened them! Obviously, it was a gag gift and not something I would ever give as "real" wedding gift, but fit the situation so well.

That was one thing that got to me after we got married. We had friends who didn't get us anything, and I didn't care one bit. Then, when they got engaged, they'd say 'oh, we have your gift', but never would remember it. It was so awkward!! I was going to give them a gift for their wedding anyway, and it only makes it weirder that they made such big deal about it. I would have rather they just not say anything than act like suddenly they were going to give us something only b/c they were getting married and wanted a gift.

I hope I don't offend anyone with this, but this was one of those gifts that I got the "what the heck" look on my face..........
My cousins gave us a "How to Read the Bible" Book. Our family is catholic and very good at going to church and are good practicing Christians. I was so completely puzzled.

i agree. and the thing that kills me is that i am COMPLETELY unable to give them a similarly bizarre gift back!
case in point: i am going to a wedding next weekend, and i've known the bride since 3rd grade. she gave me a Williams-Sonoma bar guide as a gift, which i thought was odd, considering we've known each other forever. and the fact that she makes bucket loads of $. my husband still flips through the bar guide expecting a check to drop out one day!
i'd like to give her the soap dish from the last guy! but i can't do it!

My husband and I were married 6 weeks after 9/11. His aunt made us a picture of an eagle flying over the world trade center. The picture said, "We will never forget." Not that we aren't patriotic, but for a wedding present? I haven't a clue what we even did with it.

I mention this every single time a "worst gift" thread is started, but it truly is the worst gift ever.
My former MIL came to the wedding from El Paso. She was in poor health and wasn't planning to attend because of the drive. We paid for a plane ticket so she could attend, and it was worth every penny. However, her gift was horrific. Get ready....
It was a wall-sized blue (teal, really) fleece blanket. Lovely, yes, but it featured a HAWK landing on a Harley.....claws outstretched, motorcycle revving.
MIL decided it was perfect because former DH liked motorcycles and surely I would like birds......ummmm, not necessarily birds of prey!!!!
It was doomed from the start. The best part is that I do have a classic picture of my step daughter laying on the blanket pretending to ride the motorcycle. She positioned herself perfectly, and it's classic. Her mother and I laugh hysterically about it to this day.
It’s like, “Look! It’s half past Tom!”
This is the funniest thing I have heard in a long time! Thanks for the laugh!

(Posted in my journal.) While it's not a wedding gift it was kinda in that direction.
David' best friend and Best Man in our wedding just sent us an engagment card and present. Not like we've been engaged for three years or anything. I think he felt it was now appropriate since we have an official wedding date.
So the card reads...
Gettin' Hitched?
HOO-WEE
But don't you two
make a right purdy couple...
...and 'ya ain't even cuzzins!
Congratulations!
So he adds to the card...
You might be a Redneck if:
You might be a Redneck if
you have a wedding at a zoo
You might be a Republican if:
You might be a Republican if
you have elephants, actual elephants at your wedding
You might be a Georgia Redneck Republican if:
You have a wedding at a zoo with an elephant theme in Atlanta.
Enclosed find the only truly appropriate Engagement gift.
The card came with a 5lb. bag of PEANUTS!!! The kind that you still have to shell.

These are all great!
The funniest gift we got was from our good friends (DH's best friend was a GM in our wedding). They got us a nice card with a check inside, and a bobble head. It was a dog on a beach with a tropical shirt on. It is the cutest thing, but we laughed so hard. The guys are die-hard Jimmy Buffet fans, so we got the joke. It's now sitting in our beach themed guest room and I play with it everytime I go in there to dust and vacuum. :)

We received a few really odd gifts...
My cousin sent us the ugliest serving bowl. It was silver and DH kept saying he couldn't serve food in it because it looked like a bedpan from the hospital. He thought it was the worst gift we received.
I thought the fugly flower vase his family sent us was the worst. It is this big, huge green flower with a stem. Flowers go inside of the green flower. It's horrifying. He wanted to make a statement that it wasn't as ugly as the bowl so he put it on his desk... and it's been there ever since.
A very good friend of mine also gave us two really bizarre gifts... one was a set of lamps that don't match anything in our house. The other was a collector's edition of Mr Potato Head. Yes, you read that right... Mr Potato Head!
The funniest thing about them is that none of them had cards or anything that said who they were from. I found out when talking to her on the phone weeks after the wedding.

I mention this every single time a "worst gift" thread is started, but it truly is the worst gift ever.
I'd like to compete for that award.
DH invited the parents of a close friend to our wedding. They gave us two different bath towels that in no way matched. They were threadbare and DH had seen them many times as a child in use when visiting their home. They also had suspicious brown stains on them and smelled like they'd been stored in the ass crack of a marathon runner with colitis. They were also in a beat-up box bearing the logo of a local department store that had gone out of business in the mid-80s.
We didn't even touch them with our fingers. We opened the box, closed it again, and walked right out to the trash can.

Wow, Greenbunny, that just gives new meaning to the idea of Re-Gifting, doesn't it.
Our weirdest wedding present was from some High School friends of B. They sent us some Gak. Apparently Gak is a Superfood Energy Drink from Australia, or something, and it comes in wine bottle shaped/sized bottles. I tried to Google Gak to see if I could find a link for it, but came up empty (I came up empty on Google. What does that tell you?) But it's not like they just sent a bottle; they gave us a case of Gak.
I made B write the thank you card for that one. He actually did a good job. He wrote: "Dear Friend and FriendsWife, Thanks so much for the Gak. We can't wait to open a bottle and share it with our friends. We are so glad you were able to be with us on our special day. We hope to see you again very soon. Love, Us."
We also got a ceramic pitcher shaped like Romaine Lettuce... but I think the Gak is weirder.

My weird gift is definitely weird, but I actually feel kind of bad for writing this.
My aunt called me a few weeks before the wedding and said she had bought our wedding gift, but that she wasn't sure that we would like it. I asked what it was, and she said, it was something for the bedroom, hand-made by an 80-yr old woman. She asked if I like "traditional" things, and here I am thinking its a crocheted blanket and I could always use a new blankie for the house.
Then comes the eve of our wedding and my aunt wants me to open her gift...she says we can use it on our honeymoon. I'm thinking, "great, a new blanket for the car". Boy was I off! Instead I opened a gift bag filled with many many peices of "traditional" bedding. Hand appliqued night table covers, dresser runner, bedding cover, pillow shams etc. Except its UGLY! it's cream linen, with gold lamme appliqued flowers all over it! Seriously NOT our style. And here I am opening it in front of *erveryone*, with Curt's uncle videotaping me, and I had to give my best Oscar performance ever!!

Well I think you did a pretty good acting job becuase I seriously thought you were in love with this hideous bed set. And then I sat there trying to figure out if you took this bed set on your honeymoon and like put the little side table covers on the things at the hotel and thinking it was bizarre to lug a quilt on your honeymoon. It reminds me of a bad eighties wedding dress that you'd find at value village (although in it's defense the handiwork is quite something ;p)

A hand made metal frame with handwritten instructions on how to put the glass plate in!
My great aunt got us matching T-shirts. They both had gold rings and in big bold letters my DH's said Will ~ Groom. Then mine said Lindsay ~ Bride. Needless to say we will never wear them, I just wear them to bed occassionaly.
Someone I used to work with put our wedding invite in a frame. At first I thought it was a weird gift, then it started to grow on me, then I realized they used about a $2 frame and glued the invite crooked to the paper insert that comes with the frame...it was totally awkward.
These aren't bad gifts, but just strange for a wedding gift: we got an ipod from DH's cousins and a chain with an amber charm from a friend of mine. I just can't imagine how these are wedding gifts, since we can't share them! But we still like them, only that the ipod is his and the chain is mine.

the funniest gift we got was actually a combination of gifts - either they weren't updating our registry at the store or our friends all think we're drunks, because we got, no word of a lie, 24 white wine glasses and 16 red wine glasses. i returned the excess in exchange for more place settings.
and not a gift, but the card from my bridesmaid and her then boyfriend had a cartoon mouse on the front, dressed as the statue of liberty, complete with torch held high.
inside she had written:
this is why you never send a man to buy a wedding card!

This is an awesome thread!!!
Ours wasn't that weird but for our wedding we did receive a book and workbook about obtaining financial freedom. Which was great but it was written by our wedding guest. Not terrible just slightly odd.
When my sister got married my Dad's Mom made the trip to come to her wedding (my Dad bought her a ticket) that was probably only the 2nd or 3rd time we'd met her that we can remember since she lives out of state. She gave my sister a very large, very bright cookie jar in the shape of a rooster. She did not come to my wedding and did not send a gift which was okay with me. ;)
From another guest my sister received a miniture metal shopping cart, my brother thought it was so cool that he got it that following Christmas. ;) And just because, I ended up getting it as a bridal shower gift (along with some other lovely gifts) I then gave it to the trash man LOL

I was cleaning out a closet this weekend and ran across a funny gift that I'd forgotten about. Someone who's very dear to us, but pretty eccentric, gave us a big black blanket with two huge tiger faces on it. The kind that you'd see being sold at the swap meet or on the side of the road for $10. It's so ugly, it's really hilarious. It is now headed to charity, where perhaps it can bring something else warmth and laughter.

Maybe someone can help me identify this gift I we got from my uncle. They were all packaged in the same box so I assumed they go together, but maybe not. The vase is plastic, as are the two tray-type things. I have no idea what they are for. There were no markings on the box. The only clue is that he recently returned from a trip to Tokyo, so I assume they are Japanese, but the dividers in the trays seem too narrow for serving any type of food.

My mother informed me that a gift from my Uncle would be my favorite gift, but that DH would hate it. She was correct. Part of our gift was a tiny old oval bowl with olive green trim packaged in a display box. The bowl had a chip in the finish. It is the bowl that I consider "my bowl". When we lived with my grandparents, my grandmother would always give me sausage links or olives in this bowl. I really associate it with my youngest memories of my grandparents. DH was just couldn't understand why we would get a cracked bowl.

Katie - Maybe you serve sushi on that tray? The ridges would keep the rice or sashimi from sticking to the bottom and you could get rid of too much soy sauce with the ridges. That's a ild guess though.

Maybe they're intended to hold incense sticks?
This was my first thought! Although tlew12778 does seem to have a good guess as well.

We received a few gifts that were obviously re-gifts--but none more obvious than a platter that was ENGRAVED to the couple who gave it to us--guess they didn't notice that!?!??!?!

Katie1, it has been many years since I have been to Japan, but I do shop in Japanese stores in the States. Even so, I don't remember ever seeing anything like that either there or here. Hmm...
I just had a thought. Is it possible that the black pieces were used to protect the vase? Were they placed on two sides like they might have been used for support or to prevent scraping?
Based upon gifts that I received in Japan, I would say that the vase is likely lacquered with real gold. :)

We were really fortunate that people stuck to the registry or gave monetary gifts. One woman, gave us Tiffany china which was gorgeous and completely unexpected (we didn't register there)... and then in the card she put one of those pamphlets that Jehovah Witnesses hand out when they come to your house. We're not JWs, so that was kind of strange.

We got a card from one of DH's friends, who apparently broke up with his girlfriend between our ceremony and reception. Needless to say, she didn't come to the reception (we had never met her anyway). So he wrote on the back of the envelope before he put it in the card box: "Ignore X's name inside the card. We broke up." We got a good laugh out of that.
