when is a child ready for crayons? my DD still tries to eat too much of everything she finds on the floor, and i want my walls to stay clean, so she's still too young, i realize.
but it would be really, really nice if she had something she could scribble with, at the same time.
when will she be old enough for crayons or something similar? suggestions welcome.
thanks,
Heather

I didn't read the thread the PP posted, but I will say that at 15 months I found my son with two half eaten crayons in his mouth at a birthday party. :o Thank goodness they are non-toxic!!
Needless to say, he has them now at 16 months, but only with my sitting right next to him and watching his every move, basically! ;)
I think a Magna Doodle might do the trick for now.

I also wanted to get something to scribble with for my DD, 14 months.
I got the Aquadoodle because the pen is just filled with water so I figured she couldn't do too much damage with it! :)
That being said, she still just tried to eat the pen and didn't really get the scribbling part.

Just over the past few weeks my 16mth old has taken on really using the crayons instead of eating them. They come in handy when we go out to eat. She thinks it is fun because DH and I color with her. However like others have said I do not sit her by herself because I am scared she would start coloring the TV, walls, etc. If we are at home she only gets crayons if I am sitting right next to her, or she is in her High Chair or Booster Seat.

They can use them at that age, I just always supervised, and put the crayons in an unreachable place when not in use.

I started to let my DS use crayons around 2 yrs old and that age worked perfect for us..

I've given DD crayons a few times, in her highchair, with paper taped to the tray. Most of the time she has fun scribbling, but sometimes she does try to eat them. You have to supervise! She has an aquadoodle and a magnadoodle, but doesn't really get it yet.

thanks for all the suggestions! maybe i will try crayons then, just with constant supervision, and the aquadoodle/magnadoodle sound interesting, as long as they don't break the bank so to speak...can i look at/get the aquadoodle/magnadoodle at Target or Walmart?
thanks,
Heather

We had Parents as Teachers come to our house when my daughter was 10 months old. She scolded me for not letting her have crayons yet. She said they are great for building motor skills. I was also scolded again when she turned two and hadn't let her have safety scissors. I never did give in to the scissors but the lady would bring them on her visits and DD loved them.

My DD loves them - she's 16 mo. We been coloring for a few months now. Personally, I prefer washable markers for her art creations. It comes out of things much easier and less edible.

DD is nearly 17 months and loves to draw. We have tried everything: crayons, washable markers, color pencils, mechanical pencils and ink pens. Right now, we use Crayola's Color Wonder Markers- they only color on the special Color Wonder paper. DD loves them but also puts the cap in her mouth, so I have to monitor her every move!!!
