We also had this nasty chicken every other monday that we called chainsaw chicken, or it was chicken cordeon bleu, and we called those hamsters.

When did you pledge or join?
1993

Did you live in a house?
No- B.U. doesn't allow sorority houses. I just roomed with 2 other sisters in an apartment.

What is your favorite memory?
Oh man-- where to start? Pledging was a blast. Ski trip to Vermont, a crazy Spring Break trip to Daytona Beach (via BUS from Boston), all the formals, winning Greek Games in 1994, openly feuding with the Gamma Phi Beta chapter on campus (always good, catty fun), parties at the BU and MIT fraternity houses... we had such a blast.

Mostly it was about my sisters and making those great friendships, though. There's 4 of us who are still super close and see each other all the time (despite the fact that we live in 4 different states). We're such an important part of each others' lives and that wouldn't have happened without Alpha Phi. I loved my sorority and the whole experience.

Where did you join?

When did you pledge or join?
1993

Did you live in a house?
Kinda- we had a townhouse- the only chapter on campus to have a house of any kind. I lived there during a summer- and during the rush season when I was VP Rush.

What is your favorite memory?
Welllllll- I don't think I can really share that here... although... I did enjoy rolling the ATO house with TP given to us from the Theta Chis. Then the Theta Chis (or Tater Pies as we so lovingly called them) took us out for pizza and beer. It was just dreamy!:p

My Girls are still some of the best friends I have in the world. A group of them trekked up here a couple of hours to be with me on my wedding day. When I was a Junior- I was VP Rush and my best friend was President. One of our closest friends/sisters died of a horrible disease. We all got so close- but my best friend and I became like glue. Now- 10 years later (Has it been 10 years?) we are going through the horror of having terminally ill parents together. I know God meant for us to be friends. I know we were destined to support each other for our entire lives.

Are you currently active in any way?
I pay my dues. I support the foundation. I send stuff to help the girls with Rush. I have been known to go down and help with formal rush. I won't this year (too pregnant!) That is about it.

When did you pledge or join?

Did you live in a house?
Yes, but only for a semester while I was on exec board

What is your favorite memory?
Fall recruitment, both years that I was able to participate. The weeks leading up to recruitment were always brutal - workshops, song sessions, staying up way too late working on decorations. But once we were in recruitment, I had so much fun with my sisters, singing and dancing and cheering and meeting our potential new members. It was fabulous.

Can I have two? :) My other favorite memory is the night of my candle passing when DH and I got engaged. I was so happy I cried. (I might cry now just thinking about it! LOL)

Are you currently active in any way?
I wish! I was a Chapter Advisory Board member at my alma mater while I went to law school, but now I've moved 2 hours away and can't participate anymore. I plan to get involved in the alumnae association down here soon!

Did you live in a house?
Yes, one year only. That was enough! :p

What is your favorite memory?
I have to agree with PPs that there are too many to pick just one.

Are you currently active in any way?
No. Before I moved to this city, the local alumnae association was always inviting me to their functions but there would be a huge disclaimer at the top of the invite that said something to the effect of, "YOU MUST PAY YOUR DUES IN FULL BEFORE ATTENDING." That sorta rubbed me the wrong way and I was turned off from attending any of the events. Since we moved to this city over 1 year ago, I have not been contacted by the local alumnae association and don't even know if there is one in this area. I do keep in touch with a group of KKG sisters (6 on a regular basis, 1 on an infrequent basis) and faithfully read The Key :)

Not currently. There isn't a chapter anywhere close to me now, and I haven't found an alumni chapter either. But I'm moving to a city with an active chapter and active alumni group, so I'll look into that soon.

I did that for my chapter my senior year. They still have it in the TV room! I also made one for DH with his fraternity/sports t-shirts from college that we use all the time. You should definitely get involved in the Alumnae Chapter. I loved the Buffalo Sigma Kappa alumnae chapter after graduation and the Alumnae Panhellenic in the area was very active as well. So...what was Rush (Recruitment - gotta get those PC terms down ;) ) like at your school?

University of Texas is known for having a very competitive formal rush. I was just wondering what it was like elsewhere...

GoCougs
07-22-2006, 04:23 PM
Formal rush at WSU was fairly competitive, if I remember correctly. We had 5 days of rush "parties" where we were running from house to house, reapplying lipstick/hairspray/deoderant/anything under the sun to make us look as good as possible in 90-degree heat. I drank about a gallon of lemon water that week, but it kept me hydrated! I can't remember exactly how many women went through rush that year; I'm thinking it was somewhere close to 300-400? That may be too high. At the time, there were 14 sororities on campus, so quota was around 30, give or take a few. That said, there were also a number of women that were dropped completely from all houses, which I think is pretty devastating. There's gotta be a place for everybody to fit in!

kdotp
07-22-2006, 06:31 PM
I didn't even see Winter Biscuit's post until now. Yay Kappa!

Recruitment at Iowa State was probably in the middle of competitiveness. Nowhere near the level as most southern schools, but definitely more competitive than at some smaller schools. There were 14 NPC chapters when I went through recruitment so our 5 days of recruitment went as such:
Day 1 -- visit all 14 houses for 15 minutes
Day 2 -- visit 10 houses for 25 minutes (house tours)
Day 3 -- visit 5 houses for 45 minutes (skit day)
Day 4 -- Pref night; 2 houses for 60 minutes
Day 5 -- Bid Day!

Recruitment at the University of Iowa (where I'm now an advisor) is pretty much the same.

I was a legacy to Kappa through my older sister, so I had been to visit the house while she was in school and knew some of the girls. I think that definitely helped as I completely bombed recruitment. I was so stressed out, never picked the right thing to wear, and have a tendency to babble when I get nervous, so I'm sure there some houses were like "who is this girl?" In the end, even though it wasn't always sunshine and roses, I love Kappa and I wouldn't give up my experience for anything.

If you went through formal recruitment, do you remember the other chapters you preffed? I went to Kappa and Alpha Gamma Delta.

I went to a smaller university with only 4 NPC Chapters. We did have 2 NPHC chapters on campus, but they rarely got involved with the rest of the Greek Community. :( Our formal recruitment went like this:
Day 1 - House tours - 4 houses
Day 2 - Philanthropy Day - 4 houses
Day 3 - Sisterhood (Skit) Day - 3 houses
Day 4 - Preference Night - 2 houses
Day 5 - Bid Day

I preffed Alpha Sigma Alpha and Kappa Delta. I remember sitting in our student union with my card for over half an hour trying to decide who to put first. I ultimately pledged KD due to my late SIL being one of the founders of the local sorority who later became Kappa Delta. I ended up having a lot of friends who were Alpha Sigs, though!!

Our Rho Chi's were awesome!! They really made everybody feel comfortable through the entire process right up to bid day! Turns out one of my Rho Chi's was a KD sis!! :D I remeber some girls being so nervous about their bid cards that they cried when they opened them to learn they had been excepted by their first pick. One girl from my HS went through recruitment at the same time, and when we opened our bid cards, we just smiled and asked if each other got their pick (which we knew we would - she was an AGD legacy and my late SIL was a KD).

Recruitment at my college (Emporia State University) was very similar to here.
Day 1-Philanthropy Day
Day 2-Philanthopy Day
Day 3-Sisterhood (skit round)
Day 4-Pref
Day 5-Bid Day

I was my chapter's Recruitment Chair and Secretary and then Panhellenic Delegate. I am now the President of the Alumnae Panhellenic, which is great too!

Recruitment where I went to school was much different because we only had 2 chapters. I think there were three rounds -- goodness, it's been a while because I can't remember -- Open House, Invite 1 and Preference. I prefed both groups -- Sigma Kappa and Delta Phi Epsilon.

In college, I was the treasurer for about 1 1/2 years and also served as Philanthropy Chair. As an alumna, I've served as Alumnae/Collegiate Liaison, Alumnae Chapter newsletter editor, and a couple of different national offices. I'm currently Director of Training.... which I just started at the beginning of the month (wish me luck!).

It totally depends upon your local alumnae group and how they are organized. When I lived in Dallas our group was very organized and I served as the Secretary. We had dues and monthly meetings. We had lunch and even visited museums and helped out local chapters with sorority recruitment. I'd ask them for a website if they have one and also for a list of their regular activities and dues.

We pay dues for my Alumnae Association, part of which go back to our Fraternity Headquarters and part of which are kept for miscellaneous expenses (postage, printing, thank you gifts, etc...) We only meet about 3-4 times per year -- usually a Founders Day dinner, Holiday activity, Garden Party and maybe one other event. The past few years we've done a Monmouth Duo even with the local Pi Beta Phi Alumnae Association (both our organizations were founded at Monmouth College, Monmouth, IL) which has been fun.

Our group is fairly small and somewhat relaxed. We seem to have the most fun when we just get together and socialize.

YEA!! :D I pay yearly dues to my alumnae chapter but they are about $35 -- in comparison with the hundreds I paid in college! Usually we have events, not meeting, except during election time when we'll have one meeting. We have done everything from wine tasting to pottery painting to book clubs to young mommies groups. I loved my Buffalo Alumnae Chapter the most....

This is very similar to what rush (it wasn't called recruitment back then ;)) was like at MSU when I went through, only we had 16 sororities, and would visit 3 houses for preference. I can't even remember how much time we spent at each house on each day, but it was probably very similar to what kdotp outlined.

I preffed KKG, Chi Omega, and Kappa Alpha Theta. I had a very tough time deciding which house to put first, too. Heck, I even cried because I didn't know if I was making the right decision :p I did put KKG first and was thrilled when I got a bid from them.

We (Sigma Kappa) do alumnae initiation every convention. Also, if a chapter wants to alum initiate someone (mom, alumna sister, etc), they can petition for such. That person must pay new member and initiation fees as well as the cost of a badge.

Basically, It is someone who is initiated into a sorority as an alumnae. Do you know anyone who has done this? What do you think?

I know we've done this, but I'm not sure how common it is. I know one fellow alum's mom who was initiated and a NASA astronaut. I think it's OK if not just done as an "honor". Both of these women had associations to the organization and had already given so much time and effort before initiated.

Also to answer your previous question, I know this varies for us from area to area. We have one annual official meeting and the rest is a mix of social events and philanthropy. Social events run from happy hour to holiday tea to mommy groups. A little something for everyone :) Dues are $30/yr. I think.

Are you talking about GreekChat? There is definitely a higher prevalance of AI on that board than anywhere else. Alumnae Initiation is not a new concept (I believe Alpha Phi was the first to have an Alumnae Initiate, back in the late 1800s) but it has definitely gained more notariety in the last 5 years. I know there's a thread on GC that has all the info on AI, but I'd say about half the NPC organizations have an open form of AI. That means a woman who is not currently an undergraduate (of any age) at a college or university can petition to become a member. This is a very lengthy and difficult process, taking anywhere from 6 months to 5 years. She has to have a sponsor in the organization and show she truly has something to offer the organization. Usually she'll attend a few non-ritual alumnae events to determine if the alumnae group is the right one for her. APhiJill needs to explain this, she's an awesome AI.

Inspired by Go Cougs: do you still sing any old sorority songs? I still sing Kappa songs to my son. He's going to grow up thinking Dream Awhile is a legitimate lullaby! :o

We typically sing our own "dirtier" renditions of sorority songs. You know, the versions of rush songs that the Rush Chair wasn't allowed to hear you sing during your "clap-ins". And, of course, the standard drinking songs.

My Mother was initiated into my chapter as an alumna initiate! It is a process that out national orgainization has. Not ALL of them have this (i.e. Chi Omega only does one honor intiate at their convention and that's it, and Tri Delta is very similar to that as well). Easy thing to do is call your HQ and ask. I've had 3 friends join my chapter that way and I've got 2 more that I need to do this with. In our organization it takes approval from a national officer (which I am), support from a local chapter, the woman then has to take the national test, go through our new member ritual, pay fees (cheaper than being a collegiate) and then she was initiated. She has all the rights and priveleges that I do and it's fun being sisters with my mom :)

Now...NPHC chapters do this, but in a different way, mostly through graduate chapters. That's a whole other story that skraus and I can explain as we're both Greek Advisors. If anyone ever has questions or needs rumors dispelled, please let us know.

I was on Greekchat years ago, but it truly is a bunch of hooey. ;)

AAwww...I'm sad I don't know very many lullaby DG songs. I always remember our Rush song that is all clappy and bouncy and forget the slower, more sentimental songs. Somehow I don't think I'll be able to lull our little one to sleep singing and clapping "WITH A D!" :D

LOL!! I'm at a loss too....Hmmm... the only one I can think of is "Out of My Window"

Oh I forgot about that one. We used to sing that one on pref. night. I also remembered, "When You Go Away to College" and "Dream Girl" but I think "Out of My Window" is probably a better lullaby, especially if you don't have a girl. ;)

Jmvan and Katmg- what about "Will you wear our Anchor?" We always sang it at pref- sure to make those little girls crryyyyyy- and then put DG FIRST!;)
"Out of my Window" always makes me cry. One of our sisters died my junior year- and we sang that at her funeral. I don't think I've thought about that song in yeearrrrrss.

I don't think we sang "Will you wear our Anchor?" My mom has sung it to me though - I'll have to get her to sing it again so that I can remember the tune.

We used "Dream Girl" for candle-lightings - did y'all use something else? At my sisters' weddings we've also sung it. It really meant a lot to me when a bunch of my sisters showed up (they were invited, they didn't crash the wedding!) and sung it at mine!

We just always called it the canle lighting song. Do these words sound familiar?
"Your heart belongs to him
His love belongs to you
Friends for your whole life through
Because DG hearts are true
So when they say-
You belong-
To somebody else
A Deeee Geeee you'll always be."
A group of my sisters came to my wedding- and they sang this song to me. DH was so confused.:p I loved it! One of my sister's even made me a candle in my wedding colors!

Dream awhile of Kappa ever true
Dream of her and she will be with you
Dream of friendships through the years
Dream of days their joys and tears
Now it's time that you and I must part
So take this dream and place it in your heart
Keep it dear until the time
We will meet again

all the joy that we have.........
Today.

We'll be together forever and ever
you'll know who we are by the friendships we bring
We'll all live together are ties not to sever
We'll laugh and we'll cry and we'll sing....

Today and forever we'll be Zetas true

Always think of KD when you hear this melody
We'll be wishing you goodnight in sleepy harmony
May your days all be bright ones, may your cares all be light ones,
Tonight while moonlight beams.

So dream tonight of Kappa Delta, we will dream of you

lawyergirl~I had thought of that one, but could not for the life of me remember the words! :o Our chapter didn't sing it too often. As far as Today goes, it's not in the official handbook. I'm not sure if one of the other Zeta Phi's wrote it or what. We had a lot of musically inclined sisters at ZP. It could've also been a song written for the local sorority that later became KD that the local founders brought to the chapter.

It's a program called Something of Value, which is designed to talk about risky behaviors and how the community can work together to minimize. They self-selected to participate, as do all campuses. It is also a retribution free weekend so anything the women bring up that has happened, they won't be punished for. We usually get some great honesty because of that. It should be fun!

Question: Did any of you ever read the book Pledged by Alexandra Robbins? I picked it up thinking it might be an interesting, if somewhat critical look at sorority life. Several chapters in, I'm wondering if this is just a one-sided, outright indictment of the Greek system, or if there will be a discussion of its benefits at some point. Maybe I just had an atypically great Greek experience, but I really never encountered most of the negative issues that the author brings up!

Just wondering what some other women who'd been in sororities thought of this book. I'm sort of on the fence about finishing it right now.

I read it in February. There is some discussion of the benefits of sorority life - having a support system, meeting new people, that kind of thing. But no, mostly it's about how evil the Greek system is...at least on those campuses. It's interesting because my sorority experience was so unlike anything described in that book, but it made me wonder if there were people on my campus or even in my chapter that would feel as though they could relate. It would make me sad to think so.

Be sure to let us know what you think of the book when you're done.

Re: Pledged. I cannot even begin to describe how many things are wrong with this book, the first of which her research methods are very suspect. She use an Internet Chat Board (www.greekchat.com) as a viable resource for information. Um, no. My thoughts are she already had in mind what view she was going to write from when she started researching the book and was not open-minded through the process.

I will say, yes, things that she described in the book *do* happen, but they happen everywhere on college campuses, not just in sororities. That's what really irked me, that she tried to blame all the bad things that happened in the girls' lives she profiled on their sororities, but in reality, those things could have happened if they were not affiliated. My undergrad experience was nothing like that, either.

Rosebud
10-15-2006, 04:52 PM
Yeah, I suspect that this writer knew what she wanted to say about sororities before she went into this, because her report is so very one-sided.

My school had a pretty low-key Greek system, so I totally recognize that the experience might have been a lot different at say, USC or UT-Austin... but I really can't believe it's as bad as she's claiming it is. And it seems like most of the girls she profiles have some issues to begin with, so it's not like their problems are all about their sororities. I'm just really bummed that this book seems to be trashing the entire system without examining any of the positive aspects of being Greek.

I'm going to keep reading for a bit and see what else she has to say.

I haven't read the book - but I've read about it previously. I don't think my experience of being Greek is reflected in her book - and I went to UT-Austin! :D Rush at UT is definitely brutal - but I didn't find that being IN the Greek system was problematic. If anything, we were held to higher standards than the rest of the university.

As a Greek Advisor and member of the Association of Fraternity Advisors we have had many discussions about the book Pledged. I'm sure skraus will chime in here at some point as she's a Greek Advisor also. Pledged is a very one sided book. The woman who wrote it did have a very specific agenda, to find anything negative about the sorority system at one particular university. She decieved people about her age, and her intentions, she delved into the private lives of women and then wrote a book fully one-sided about one experience. As many of you have stated, this book does NOT represent your experiences. It also does not represent experiences at UT or USC or KU, Maryland, Duke, UNC, Michigan State, Michigan, Emporia State, Buffalo.....etc. etc.

That is one experience that we are not sure if it is accurate or not. I can guarantee that things occur all over college campuses that are not healthy within women's circles such as depression, eating disorders, alcohol abuse and other detrimental problems. Can this be perpetuated in sororities? Sometimes for some women. Not all of the time for all of us. Many of us have never experienced the negative things mentioned in Pledged and let's hope that the women behind us never will. It is our job to keep educating women about the postive aspects and wonderful attributes of sorority life.

As a chapter, though, we worked our asses off during recruitment - it was difficult to overcome some anti-Greek sentiment on campus, so we put together a polished, beautiful, wonderful time for the women who went through recruitment. :)

That's so awesome! I had dinner with some sisters last night, was a ton of fun. We're working so hard to start an alumnae chapter here, but it's a town where so many women graduate and leave the town.

We wanted to start an alum chapter, but the same thing happens here. After ppl graduate, they take off to KC or one of the other midwest cities. :(

So sorry hon. I lost a sister to cancer about 2 years after we graduated. We named a room in our house after her (she lived in it while we were in college).

TriSigma, funny that you posted!

I was heading to downtown San Fran and went to the BART station trying to find a place to park and I parked next to a car with a Tri Sigma license plate frame.

I think the Alpha Phi foundation is going to create a scholarship in Courtney's name

I just got back from a weekend in MN for a birthday party for one of my pledge sisters. She lives with another pledge sister, so it was fun to see them both.

A bunch of my KD sisters are meeting this coming weekend but I won't be able to make it, unfortunately. I'm really bummed - one of my good friends from exec board just had an adorable baby boy and I really wanted to see him!

Hope everyone's having a great holiday season....

That is so great. Tri Sigma's Foundation director is an Alpha Phi, she's so fantastic and raising us tons of money, she used to work for you all, but your current Foundation director is even more amazing.

Hey, ladies! I am in need of some help and thought the members of this thread would be perfect to provide it! I am sending letters out to the local sorority chapters in regards to my busines and need some wording help. Here's what I have typed up so far:

*Letter Deleted*

What do you think? Should I just sign with my name and title or include more contact info? I am including a business card with the letter.

TIA!!!

I would say that's fine and just include a card and email address/phone number. Just a few ideas. Find out if you have a local Alumnae Panhellenic and if so, contact the president to ask her if she'll forward that to the membership. Even consider your local Junior League :)

And, I'd let the Greek Advisor know so she can share your information with the sorority women as well. :) Good luck!

Joining here late.

What sorority are you a member of?
Phi Sigma Sigma

Is it NPC, NPHC, NALFO, or other?
NPC

Where did you join?
Florida Atlantic University

When did you pledge or join?
1995

Did you live in a house?
No, we didn't have any greek housing on our campus.

What is your favorite memory?
Life time frienships, learning leadership skills, confrences, fall recruitement, tons of parties, initiation & much more!

Are you currently active in any way?
No. My chapter snubbed my sister, so I don't want to be a part of them any longer which is sad since I planned on doing so much for/with them.

Even if you're not active with your chapter you can always be a great alumna for your national organization. Sometimes I've learned through the years that other chapters are just amazing and our national volunteer structures can be a wonderful family as well.

Welcome though!

Thanks Tracie.

I also called our Nationals and nothing has been done about the situation. It's a long & complicated story. I absolutely loved my chapter & sorority when I was active and right after ward. It's only now that I have "hard feelings".

So sorry about that. I do know that many of our national organizations have re-vamped our membership discipline processes since you and I have been in college, so help combat issues.

Glad you came in here though, we're a great group of sorority women! And being a Tri Sigma, of course I love Phi Sig's too :)
