View Full Version : Going off to college gift
I've done these baskets in the past, but it's been a while so I'm a little rusty. I throw in some "essentials," such as a can of soup for when you're sick, aspirin for those headaches you get when you study too hard, flip flops for the shower, a shower basket. I like to throw in lots of silly stuff...but I can't remember what else I threw in. I used to do funny sayings, too. Anyone have any suggestions? TIA!

A roll of quarters for the vending machine or laundry!
I love to give Aaron Karo's "Ruminations on College Life" to those going off to college - I loved reading his site when I was in college and I doubt that much has changed. It's a lot of universal truths about college and really, really funny.
A doorstop and a dry erase board are also good for being social in the dorm (and are cheap, too!)

Some poster ticky-tack stuff for hanging pictures and posters on the walls (and to remind the receiver of home)
Duct tape - 'nuff said
A small tool kit - I used mine more than I thought I would
A hot pot for cooking in the room.
You could also include pre-stamped post cards requesting cookies or baked goods. My aunt did this for me - such a cute idea! She had wrote everything out and let me "check" off boxes:
Dear Aunt Lisa:
College is:
__ Great
__ Good
__ Not so good
Some cookies would help! Please send:
__ Chocolate chip
__ Oatmeal raising
__ peanut butter
__ all of the above
Thanks!
Love Jen

Microwave popcorn.
Gift cards - target, walmart, etc
Gift cards to the local pizza joint.
Laundry soap, softener, etc - she might not even "think" about the fact that she'll need those.

As a college administrator, I suggest (on top of what already has been):
Paper for printers
Popcorn
Twizzlers
Any CD or I-tunes certificates
Ramen noodles
Chocolate
Microwavable Mac and Cheese
Any cool DVD's they may not have (Napoleon Dynamite, etc.)
Any computer or Ipod accessories
Any laundry things (basket, dryer sheets, etc.)
Any favorite things from home food wise that you know of

If you include the soup throw in a can opener and a microwavable bowl too. If she's eating at the dining hall all the time she might not have them.
