DS is 2 weeks old. I received a handout from our Ped about basic "sleep training" things we can do now (do not stimulate at night etc). This made me wonder when we can stop waking him up at night to feed? Right now we wake him up every 3 hours. When can we safely feed based on his cues alone?

Usually once a baby has regained up to their birth weight, you can stop waking them to feed and let them set the pace.

I was taught to look for a babe that's consistently gaining - you can be back at birth weight, but if you've been there for three weeks without change, it's time to wake at night to feed again. Thus this isn't a milestone that's gained once and never looked back on, some kids need it again later on. Once BFing's well-established if feeding that way, and regardless of feeding method any jaundice is resolving, and weight is consistently increasing at least four oz per week (for newborns), hunger cues are sufficient.

Congrats on the birth of your son! Seeing a "newborn" thread from you made me smile. :D

Thanks for the replies mama and BTB. He is having a weight issue so I knew this was down the road a little bit. I am just looking forward to getting some more sleep at night!
