Have you made arrangements for your pets if something would happen to you and your DH? Have you formally asked someone to adopt them? Have you put it in your will, anything like that?

DH and I just asked our ex-neighbors this weekend to be Bella's godparents. They have four cats and are the best pet parents I have ever seen. I'm so thrilled they said yes.

I spoke to my mom about this a few weeks ago. I just told her that if anything should happen to Brad and I that she would have to take care of Lucy. She's the only one I trust to love her like Brad and I do. (I also made her promise that should she ever end up with Lucy, she can NEVER feed her any table scraps and my dad is NOT allowed to give her icecream! :p )

My mom and dad have "claimed" Oliver many, many times. She always says "You'd never have to worry about Oliver being homeless. He would come live with us. They adore him and care for him the way I do, so I wouldn't want it any other way. It makes me feel much better because I would hate thinking he wouldn't be well taken care of. :(

I never really thought about it. They both have enough aunties and uncles that love them, I'm sure someone would take them (after a little fighting amongst them all). Maybe the hubby and I should look into that.

I never thought to do this. Great idea!

I hadn't thought of it either, though I'm sure my mom would take our kitties (even though she said no more cats for her). My FH's parents don't like cats.

I never thought of it as godparents, but if somehting were to happen to DH and I, the dog would go to his parents and the cat to mine.

No - our cat does not have godparents, as she's never been baptized, and she's not having a religious upbringing. However, if anything happened to us, my mom would take her in - thus the cat does have a guardian. :)

No, but DH and I "argued" about whose parents would get him, as both sets love him. But my ILs have 2 other dogs so Scrappy would have more fun with them and they know more about taking care of dogs. Still, my parents dog-sit all the time and love him to death. So they'll have to get "visitation" rights or something if anything ever happened to the 2 of us! :D

If anything were to happen to both of us, my Aunt would take my precious Sunny, and Liza (DH daughter) would take Sierra.

And yes, it's in a legal contract. That just makes me feel more secure.

We have it in our wills that my parents get the animals (two cats, one dog), plus a tidy little sum to help take care of them.

My mother will be in charge of our pets if we go before they do. Our wills stipulate that a certain amount per animal will be given to whoever (in case she is unable to care for them) gets them to cover annual vet care and food costs.

We always figured that my in laws would take the dogs and my parents would take the cats, but we never really said anything firm. It's something we should definitely discuss and write out.

My parents would take our dog, and we would take theirs. We don't have it in our wills, and I am okay with that. I trust my mother to follow through with her promise, and there is no one who would try to fight for him. In the event that DH and I both die, a good portion of our estate would go to my parents, so I am not worried about setting aside additional money for pet expenses.

In the unlikely event thay my DH and I and my parents all die before my dog, my best friend will either keep him or ensure that he lives with one of our dog-loving friends.

I wrote a document that my parents keep saying that should anything happen to me that my one friend will get my little one. My husband keeps saying that he'll kidnap my dog first but i've tried to make it very clear to him and everyone that my one friend gets her....

My parents and sister and brother-in-law will determine who goes where. We have a dog and two cats, and if something were to happen right now, our dog would definitely go to live with my parents because they live in a very rural area and he loves it there. In the future my sis and BIL might move to a more rural area as well though, so that could change things.

ETA: And both my parents and sis/BIL are cat-lovers, so no worries about our kitties.
