Hi guys,

I know all kids are different, but I'm looking to get a gauge on clothing sizes. I'm hoping to buy some cute summer things (since everything is going on sale now) for my DD for next summer. She'll be one on March 17th. Since I'm in The Bay Area, summer doesn't generally hit until June or so, if not later, and lasts until around Sept./Oct. I'm assuming I should by 18mth, but am wondering what the usual range for 12mths is (would it be 12, up until 18 or what?). For what it's worth, at her 2mth WBV she was measuring in the 25th percentile.

Well, you shouldn't gauge on me, because DD will be 18 months this Friday, and is STILL in 12-month clothes, half of which are still too big for her. I've given up on buying ahead!

But she was in the 5-10 percentile most of her life, until her 18 month WBV last Friday, when for the first time she hit 25% (she was actually in the 75 percentile when she was born).

DS just turned 11 months and he is wearing primarily 18mos and some 12mos stuff. I put a 24mos onesie on him one day and it was HUGE. Anything I buy for him now is 18mos. OTOH, the daughter of one of my good friends is 19mos and she's still in 12mos clothing. You just can never tell, really.

DD is a year old and in 12-18 month clothes. She's been 90-95% from 1 to 6 months, now she's around 50% weight and 95% height. I suspect we'll be out of 12-18m in a couple of months though.

My daughter wore 9-12 mos clothes at that age.

So depends on the brand! DD is 12 months old , generally about the 50th percentile in weight, 95+ in height. DD has some dresses that are 0-6 months (Janie & Jack) that she can still wear, a few 3-6 month Gymboree tops, 6-12 month pants from Gap and everything else is 12-18 months!

MY DD is 14 months old and not a big girl at all. 50% for both height and weight and I bought her 18 months clothing for this summer.

It depends upon the brand. My DD just turned a year old at the end of June and wears (depending upon the brand/manufacturer) anywhere between 6-9, 9-12, and 12 months. She can still wear some of her earlier clothes depending upon manufacturer as well.

We've always had a problem with pants/shorts though. DD has never worn the correct size of those since she was a newborn. Currently she wears mostly 6-9 month shorts but some 9-12 month depending upon brand.

Old Navy she can wear the 6-12 month dresses/pants/shorts/capris and 6-12 months and 12-18 month tops.

We have tried some things on DD just to make sure of the size (if the arm holes are cut big then we go with a 12 month top but if it's one that she can wear late summer/fall then we go with an 18 month size. But most of her summer clothes are 12 months.

We have bought a few things in 18 month size for fall/winter (2 Christmas dresses marked down last year, a skirt outfit, and a jumper). We did buy one nightgown in 18 months for her birthday but she will be able to wear it until it gets really cold. She got another one as a present (in 18 month). We did get a more summery night set (shorts/capris) in 12 month size though. She still wears her 12 month old nightgown and has plenty of room in it.

My DD is almost 11 months and is in primarily 18 month clothes. She's 97% in height though...tall girl we have. She's also no lightweight at 22lbs. :)

MIL bought her a couple of 12 month outfits at the Hartstrings outlet recently and the pants were so short on her. However, yesterday she was in a dress from BRU that was 12 months and it fit just fine. Basically, depends on the brand, but 18 months seems to be key for us right now.

I no longer buy in advance though, because she has huge growth spurts here and there and we have a closet ful of stuff she never wore, because she surpassed sizes, especially 3-6 months.

My dd is 11 months, and in the 25th percentile for both height and weight. It does depend on the brand, but in general she wears 6-12 months, 9-12 months or 12 months. 12-18 is still too long...

DD turns one in 3 weeks and she's wearing mostly 6-12 or 9-12 month clothing and probably will for the rest of summer. She's on the smaller side of things, weighed 17lbs 3oz and 28" long at her 10 month appointment. So far she's been fitting into clothes at the "correct" time. ie she was wearing 3-6 month clothing from when she was 4 months until 6 months and actually still fits into some skirts in that size now. She has some 6-12 month sweaters and dresses that are still pretty big on her though. I'm kind of planning on 12-18 month sizing for this fall/winter. I'm not guessing past that though!

My twin nieces are 12 months old and wear 18-24 month clothes. But they've always been a little big for their age.

DD is 14 months and wears sizes at or less than 12 months. Here are some examples:

Gymboree: 6-12 months
Osh kosh: 6-9 months (bottoms); 12 months (tops)
Carter's: 12 months

DD's average height, less than 1 percentile on weight. I'm resigned to never buying ahead. I just have no idea with her.

Thanks guys! You all confirmed what I was thinking in that it's too hard to gauge where DD will be at approx. 1 yr. I saw a couple dresses at Macy's that I just love and want her to have, but she's stocked pretty well this summer, so next would be ideal.

Thanks again for the responses. Now I just need to make a decision. :)

my DD has always been "on schedule". When she was 11 1/2 months old, she fit in her 12-month outfit fine. About a week or 2 after her birthday, everything started to be too small or tight in places. Same applies for 18 months. she makes it very easy to buy things in advance.

also in terms of percentile, she is around the 65-75 range. So again, middle of the road.

DD is almost 17 mths old and wears 12-18 mths now depending on the brand. At 12 mths she was wearing some 6-12 and 12 mths clothes and a few 12-18mths. We never buy ahead now, even though I hate missing out on all the sales!! DD is 25% for weight (21 lbs) and off the charts for height (almost 34 in at her 15mth appt) One pieces are no longer an option b/c I the size I would have to buy to fit her length wise is just huge everywhere else. In general I think Gymboree and Janie and Jack run a bit big. For instance, DD just wore a 0-6 mths dress from Janie and Jack 2 days ago...it was shorter (but cute short) and fit her great everywhere else. I also have a 6-12 mth sweater jacket there from last winter that I know she will wear this fall. So you just never know!

Does Gymbo tend to run large? We are thinking of scooping up some sale stuff for DD too, but not for next summer (or not just for next summer), but for a Caribbean cruise in December/early January, when she'll be 11 months. At her 4-month WBV she was 50th percentile height and 75th percentile weight (24/13.8), and I can't decide if we'd be better off with 6-12 month sizes or 12-18 month sizes. Obviously she could wear the 12-18 stuff for next summer, but I'd also like to get some items she could wear on the trip (10 days), and I'm thinking 12-18 will likely be too large. Anybody?

Gina....I think that Gymboree runs large compared to other brands. I think that if you avoid alot of one pieces you will probably be ok with 6-12mth. DD is 16 mth old, but off the charts for height (almost 34 in) and she has some overalls and a few sun bubbles from Gymbo in 12-18 that fit her (despite her being taller than the height info on the tags), but she is too long for 12-18 mth onesies, they are starting to pull at the neck. But some of the 12-18 pants and shorts are too big on her in the waist right now...she weighs 21.5 lbs or so. Hope that helps!
