Labor Day Weight loss Challenge

Sunday July 9 - Saturday September 2
8 weeks

Your moderators for this thread are tgr68 and LyndzeyAHL!

Who we are:

We are a group of women who for 1 reason or another want to shed a few (or more) lbs. We need the encouragement of others no matter their size or goal and we thrive in an atmosphere where we can all support one another.

Want to join the fun?!?

We welcome one and all. It doesn’t matter what diet you are on (if any) or how many miles a week you run (if any) we will all find lots of help and support here.

Feel free to join at any time during the challenge.
It’s better to join NOW than to wait until we start a new challenge!:D

You don’t have to read the whole thread to join. Feel free to just jump in on the last page and post a reply with the following information. None of this info is a must but it helps to learn a little bit about each other.

A new challenge will be created at the end of the active challenge! A link to the new thread will be placed at the end of each challenge once it is completed.

PLEASE post all updates in RED and include the week you are checking in for so your updates are easier to see and to assure we don't miss any of them! Thanks!

I have been following along in the #9 Challenge and am excited to have something where I am accountable on a weekly basis. Let's hope this helps! I know it all comes down to eating for me and I just have a hard time with choosing healthy. I work long hours and when I get home I want to eat NOW! Seems like all the bad food is quick to fix.

Here's to a good week

Well, I just got back from grocery shopping, and wouldn't you know that half our cart was full of fresh fruits/veggies with hardly any freezer stuff!! :D I decided to try all my recipes from the Healthy Living (http://healthy.allrecipes.com/) section of All Recipes (http://allrecipes.com/). I also decided to pick up some Special K and take the Special K Challenge (http://www.specialk.com/challenge/plan.shtml) to jump start my weight loss!

I *thought* I had about 10lbs to lose, but the gym guy really surprised me by telling me it was more around 20! I'm hoping with that added motivation, I'll keep up the workouts and focus on eating better!

Pizza is a sacred food in our house! LOL! My DH could eat it every night- and I really think he did in college! Luckily he was on the track/cross-country team and running about 70 miles a week!

I think I'm going to just start making stuff and hopefully he'll try it. I'll definitely post things I find he likes!

Oakley,
After DD was born, I think we ate it every night, too. It's quick, it's good, and it's filling. It's a fallback meal in our house for sure.

TX Sweetheart,
My freak of a husband won't even eat potatoes! It may drive us to divorce. ;)

I swear my DH ate a total of 5 different meals growing up. This HAS to be why he's so picky. ;)

Pizza...yummmm. I totally picked up the pizza habit along with DH! It CAN be healthy, though! A lot of places are now selling wheat crusts (although w/out reading the ingredients who knows if they're the good kind), and if you double up the veggies and cut the cheese in 1/2 it's actually not bad. I also dab off my pizza (and DH's when he's not looking) to get excess oil. I read somewhere it can save 100-200 calories!

WOW- LIZNKEITH- your hubby won't eat potatoes?? I thought the potato was the universal food. ;)

Mine will literally eat anything you put in front of him, so they aren't ALL picky! I'm the picky eater in our family! :D But then, I was raised by parents who didn't like cheese and a father who wouldn't touch a slice of pizza with a ten foot pole!

DH will eat most of what I put in front of him. He used to fight me on carrots until I meshed these two different glazed carrots recipes together. I basically cook them with honey and italian dressing. Sounds weird I know, but it's really good. He hates corn - will completely turn his nose up at it - unless it's sweet and on the cob.

I just added up everyone's challenge goals, and the total is 186 pounds!! Let's set a group goal for half that (since I know that anyone of us could have an "off" challenge). That would make our group goal 93 pounds. Do you think we can do that ladies?

I know but I've basically been stuck at my current weight for a long time BUT we did just buy the house and I'm doing TONS of yard work so I know my muscles are tightening up b/c my clothes are getting awefully saggy in spots. So... I need to get back on the south beach and back to curves or I might have to boil up a pot of pasta just to beat myself with a wet noodle. Seriously ;)

Has anybody been successful in getting their hubby to eat something they previously refused to eat? I've asked MIL for tips on how to get DH to eat veggies but she said he's been like that since he was really little. DH says it has to do with the texture of the food... but really, can he hate the texture of every single veggie? LOL

Um, yes, but it involves seriously shaming him into it. :o I discovered, quite by accident, that he often tells me he doesn't like something, when he really means he has never tried it. So now we have a deal where he tries new things in exchange for my not making fun of him. LOL

Try mixing the veggie in something. DH does not like zuchinni. But I chopped it and threw it into tonight's pasta, and he ate it right up.

I realize this won't work on every guy. In fact, DH is always trying to sneaked peas into stuff because I hate them. His mom even pureed them before putting them into one of her party potato casseroles. It was the only thing on my plate I didn't eat! :p

Does anyone have any ideas for quick protein? I eat WAY too many carbs but I find that these are the easiest and quickest things for me to eat. Take tonight for example, I get home at 5:30 from work and I have to be at "boot camp" at 7:30 so I need to leave the house at 7:00 to be there on time. I like to finish eating before 6:00 since it is so freakin hot out that I feel sick if I eat any later. Since this only gave me 30 minutes to eat - I ended up eating easy mac. Only took me 3 minutes to make and it was YUMMY!! But I know that is way bad for me. Any ideas??

Oh mine will find the smallest piece of veggie and spit it out... He did that once at Olive Garden when he was a kid. He found a piece of onion in his spaghetti sauce, his mom told him to just eat it and he promptly threw up LOL I've heard that story several times and for now I've given up on feeding him veggies. But I have told him he'll have to learn to at least not throw up when he eats veggies when we have kids. It would be a disaster if he doesn't eat veggies and the kids are like "If daddy doesn't have to, then I guess I don't either"

not sure what your schedule is like but usually on sunday I bust out the grill and make a bunch of meat then I just have to reinvent it. Like this week I took beef country ribs and then the leftovers I threw in a pan with a touch of oil and onions threw that in a tortilla with some beans (protein) and Guacamole and the whole thing took about 5 mintues vs 3 for easy mac ...

I also will do the same thing left over bbq chicken - Preheat oven (we have toaster oven) grab wheat pita spread some bbq sauce - sliced onions (I usually slice an onion and a half on sunday and put in a baggie then dice the other) some low fat moz cheese and some of the chicken shredded and make BBQ chicken pizzas. which are great with green pepper and mushrooms too. Another one that takes less than 10 minutes if the stuff is already made

EZ protein - EGG SALAD(I hard boil eggs a dozen at a time and mark the carton - sliced eggs on salads are good too!) I put it right down the center of a leaf of romain no bread

cottage cheese and fruit

I guess I eat great b/c I take a few extra minutes to plan and prep and it really really helps esp if I can grab some cottage cheese while I'm waiting for the other stuff to cook so I don't reach for the crappy stuff just because I'm 'starving'

HTH :o

Naamah,
DH would never eat carrots either and I bought some of those frozen Green Giant Honey Glazed Carrots. He loves those! That’s they only way I can get carrots in to him.

Lynzey,
I know what you mean. After we bought our house I hit a plateau as well. We were doing a lot of yard work as well. Just stay disciplined and suddenly it will pass. I’m in my second week of a two week free trial of Curves. I really like it and am thinking of joining.

TXSweetheart,
Like I mentioned to Naamah he would never eat carrots before but I got him to eat honey glazed and he really likes them. Potatoes he will eat if I make them, but he complains so much the entire time, it hasn’t been worth it. Now that we’ve got another potato lover in the house (my DD), he’ll probably be seeing more of them. DH has a texture thing with onions and mushrooms. He’ll eat onions if they are chopped up REALLY tiny. Mushrooms, I am not so lucky with. I can’t even use Cream of Mushroom soup! I have to substitute Cream of Chicken. One time, Mom made a Green Bean Casserole and told him that she used Cream of Chicken instead of the Mushroom, like she normally does for him. Seriously…they are so tiny. He could possibly notice. We look up halfway through the dinner and saw him picking out the tiny bits of mushrooms. LOL! He hasn’t trusted us since.

Maximus,
I was going to suggest eggs as well. Someone in the WW thread posted a 3 point Fried Egg Sandwich. Take a slice of whole grain bread, spray on some butter substitute and add a fried egg. Haven’t tried it yet but they said it was super yummy. You could also keep some of those Tyson shortcuts on hand. You know, those pre-cooked slices of grilled chicken. Just pull them out and throw them on top of some greens.

Group Challenge
I’ll do my part! That would be killer if we could pull it off.

LIZ~Hehe!! K's mushrooms are my peas! I’ll do my part! That would be killer if we could pull it off. I thought about just upping it to 50 lbs (which would be awesome if we hit), but then I got curious as to what everyone had set for goals. I was really surprised as to how high it was. You would think 5 lbs here and 10 pounds there could really add up!

YES- this is my DH too! So now if he says he doesn't like it, I have to ask if he's actually TRIED it!

You can also get quick protein from a protein bar. I usually eat 1/2 of a Zone bar or another type of protein bar. Just watch the calories!! I HAVE to get a lot of my protein this way because I am not a big meat eater and I do not like eggs. :(

I'm here for this round!!!

That is so funny about everyone’s Veggie hating husbands. I’m in the same boat with mine. He used to not even eat salad, but I was able to change his mind on that. I cannot even imaging if he didn’t eat potatoes – I grew up in the Potatoe State and I can’t live without potatoes – though I’ve been working on cutting back on them, especially fries.

I find the more veggies I try now that I’m older, the more I like them. I really wish I had a spot for a vegetable garden. My mom always had one and I loved it.

I’m trying a huge experiment this month. I went off my birth control at the end of this last cycle of pills. I’m trying to see if it will help with the weight loss. In the first three days I’ve lost 3 pounds!!! I’ve steadily been gaining since I went on them and I finally got fed up and decided maybe all those studies that say it doesn’t contribute to weight gain were wrong – or they just haven’t encountered my body in their study!

So we’ll see. I’ve never in my life gained weight at the rate I was the last 2 years, and I’ve never EVER had such a hard time losing it. So if this doesn’t help I’ll know I just wasn’t trying hard enough. I am aware that the 3 pounds was probably water weight – but it sure is nice to be rid of it – and it’s a start! :D

I have a silly question and since this is my first challenge, that might be why I am so confused.

Thanks girls!

maximus I don't think that's a silly question. For me, I chose this week as Week 1 because I've been going along since the last challenge. I'm not sure in your case. Hopefully someone more wise and all-knowing can help. :)

ETA: I just went back and read the first page. Since the Challenge starts the week of July 9th, Week 1 would be July 9-15. Week 2 would be the 16-22 and so on. So I would count this time as week 1.

Maximus~Happy1 is correct in how she is interpreting the weeks. This week is week 1. You just need to choose a day as your weigh-in, whichever works best for you. If you just want to post your weight, that is fine. Myself or another mod of this thread can figure out the change. If Sundays works best for you, we'll just mark a SKIP for this first week and post the coming Sunday's weight on week 2.

Snacking is a big problem for me too. Mid-afternoon is a killer for me when at work. If I don't have a health snack option available at my desk it makes the vending machine very tempting.:o

My favorite healthy snacks are carrot sticks with light ranch dressing for dipping, granola bars, string cheese sticks (light) and fruit. Another favorite snack (but not healthy) are those 100 calorie packs of cookies, etc. Its just enough to satisfy the junk food craving.

When I'm studying is when I try to get my water in. I've been known to refill my Nalgene bottle 3 or 4 times during a study session- 100oz of water goes down quick for me this way. If I'm truly hungry, I'll eat some lean meat, an apple, or some other high fiber and lower sugar fruit. My plan calls for only having carrots and celery as snacks, but so far I've had no problem with my snacks.

down another 2lbs from yesterday! (but I won't count it until Saturday)

Start slow but sneak it in, dixie cup after you brush your teeth - 5oz x am/pm, I drink in the car on the way to work, I use those crystal light packets. My goal is to drink 1/2 my body weight in oz a day to really curb the appetite and flush everything out. I haven't been doing so good lately b/c I'm not working and I have no daily 'routine' right now. I have to get back on track fast I need to really drop some pounds. DH just got a motorcycle and I want to look good riding on the back :p

For snacks I eat 1/2 a protein bar (just watch the calories) or a dannon light n' fit yogurt (and smoothies). I like eating the protein bar because it really fills me up!

ETA: Try drinking lukewarm water- I find that I can get more in that way. And yes, I'm weird. :)

For snacks I eat fruit, Danon light and fit yougurt, sugar free pudding, Quaker Quakes rice snacks (I like the apple cinnamon flavor), and in the summertime I buy the real fruit popsicles (only 80 calories and it takes care of my craving for sweets)

Vacationing and stressing about my MIL moving to town did me in this past week. I'm hoping some is water though as AF was just in town.

Hopeing to post a loss this week. I was pretty good yesterday even though I made homemade enchiladas and dulce de leche ice cream. :)

Today, I did some yardwork for my exercise and will be at work later and on my feet for 4 hours - so that should help.

I'm counting my points so I hope to have a loss this week. :)

I'm doing the Scarsdale Medical Diet. A good friend of mine lost 50lbs in 6 weeks on it, but its amazingly balanced for those kinds of losses. If anyone it interested in it, the entire plan is laid out here:
http://lowcarblisa.tripod.com/thescarsdalemedicaldiet/id18.html

There is also a book that was printed back in the late 70's, but after comparing the site to the book, the site did a fabulous job of copying the book verbatum and not adding their own stuff.

maximus I know your frustration. When I first started out with working out and eating better, it literally took me 3 months before I started seeing any weight loss. What I did notice was that I was firming up and more toned where I hadn't been before. Still, when you know you're doing so well and see no reflection of that on the scale it gets frustrating. Hang in there!

Thanks Nikki!

I am trying to hang in but part of me thinks if I am not losing weight with all this exercise, maybe I am better off just not doing any. I KNOW that is not true but you know what I mean. It would be way more fun to sit at home after work and order a pizza and chill in front of the TV instead of racing home to grab a bite to eat before I have to change and head out to the gym. I am going to step up my efforts a little more next week and hopefully I will see a difference next week when I weigh in.

I use the digital scale from Sharper Image. Not the one that computes your BMI, just the regular one. I really like it and it seems pretty accurate as it corresponds with the Dr.'s scale that they weight me on at Curves. It's a little on the pricey side.I got mine on Ebay for a lot cheaper though.

Okay, ladies, I need some help here. About every two to three weeks I have an emotional breakdown about my weight. :( It is so frustrating to me that when I start excercising/eat right, I gain 5 pounds in a very short time, then it takes me months to take 1 or 2 pounds off. DH tells me it's because I'm not doing a strenuous enough activity, which I will agree with, except I can't do the types of activity that he is suggesting because of my arthritis and weak joints - specifically my knees and ankles. The weight I have put on only magnifies the problem.

I guess I'm just tired of waiting months in between losses of any kind. I think I'll go clear out my closet this afternoon to get out all the things that no longer fit (things I bought at Christmas). I'll put back my 12's and sell my 10's. :( I just never thought in my life I would be this big. I determined a long time ago that I wouldn't ever let my weight bother me - especially after years of being called fat (at a sz 6) by my mother. :(

Mystikal

How much are you eating? How often/what kind of exercise are you doing? Have you had your thyroid tested? A lot of times thyroid problems can cause slow weight loss. Other signs of hypothyroidism are dry/brittle nails, excessive hair loss, fatigue, dry skin. If you have any of these symptoms call your PCP and ask to have bloodwork done.
I'm really sorry that you are feeling so low. You did great at this weeks weigh-in. Don't give up. I know how hard it is when you are working your butt off and it doesn't seem to be doing much of anything. But it's the small losses that make up the big ones. And even if you don't lose as much or as quickly as you want the important thing is that you are getting healthier and setting a good example for your daughter. ((HUGS))

tgr68, sorry I don't have any good advice, but I'm right there with you (down to being called fat when I was a size 5  ). I've really been watching what I eat the past two weeks, but my weight hasn't changed at all. Don't give up though! Can you exercise longer instead of harder? That's what I'm gonna try to do, anyway.

Thank you all!!

After I typed that post, I ended up popping the button on the pair of pants I wore to church, so I made a mad dash to Walmart to purchase at least one new pair of pants. I was so relieved when the attendant working the dressing rooms had a similar body type to myself (heighth and all) and was super-nice but honest in whether or not the item I was trying on was right for my body type. I had such a good time that I walked out with 2 pairs of denim trousers, 1 pair of low-rise boot cut jeans, 2 new packages of underwear, a camisole, and a super-cute tunic top!!!

I know the new clothes are just a temporary fix, but at least I'll be comfortable for the time being.

Mystikal~I have not had my thyroid checked. I am doing pilates right now since it is very low impact. I have arthritis and a circulatory condition, and the symptoms have been aggrivated by the weight gain. I'm hoping to at least get down to where walking and eventually running doesn't hurt my joints. I know once I get to that point the weight will come off a lot easier. As far as eating habits go, I've cut myself back to 1200 calories a day before with no results. Here lately I've been visiting the healthy (http://healthy.allrecipes.com) section of All Recipies (http://www.allrecipes.com), and it seems as though the recipes in the vegetarian section really fill me up, and I have good weigh-ins!! I'm not vegetarian, but I love some of the pasta recipes there!! I find that carbs don't seem to be a problem. In fact, my better weeks involve pasta almost everyday! :D

silvergrey~Thank goodness somebody really understands this!! I'm right there with you (down to being called fat when I was a size 5  ). My sister actually called me a cow at our prom walk-in in front of everybody, and my dress was a size 2 taken in!  One of my goals is to be able to do the Maximum Burn pilates within two weeks, and the hour-long workout in six weeks. I have about 10 different pilates DVD's, so I don't get bored with the workouts. Plus with DH on the elliptical at the same time really pushes me not to skip a workout. He also encouraged me to do an extra workout during the day if I really feel like it. (Here lately I would get the urge to do a "second" workout, but put it off in lew of exercising with DH only to skip that evenings workout.)

Again thank you all so much for the wonderful support and encouragement!!

I'll be back a bit later to do the updates!

Namaah do you have a bike? I'm sure your DD would love to cruise around in a baby seat on the back and biking is low impact with high results. (lance armstrong?!? hot hot hot...)

its also pretty easy on the joints b/c its considered fluid motion and non impact like running.

also if you have access to anything like a public pool - exercising in water is something like 70% more effective than on dry land b/c water acts as resistance and that also takes the pressure off your joints so even if you can just wade back and forth across the pool about waist deep holding DD you'll burn more calories than just walking on land.

Mystikal
08-13-2006, 06:31 PM
Namaah I would definitely have your thyroid checked if you have cut your calories all the way back to 1200 and haven't seen results. Sounds like it might be a problem...just stick with it. Don't give up. :)

Naamah,
(((HUGS))) Try not to beat yourself up over it. I find when I get bummed about my weight, the first thing I do is turn to a carton of Ben & Jerry’s. Definitely the WORST thing I could do. I echo what everyone else says: celebrate the small losses. It’s a pound here and there that makes up a 10 pound loss. It’s certainly not an easy journey and we all have our gains. The important thing is that we stay our course. You said that you are eating 1200 calories a day. You are not going under that, are you? You may try adding a banana or a slice of high fiber bread (an extra 50-100 calories) to your daily diet to see if that helps boost your metabolism at all. Sometimes 1200 calories is less than our bodies need an we go in to starvation mode. Good for you for getting some new clothes!! It’s so important to feel good about the way you look. While I hate buying clothes in the size I am right now, I always feel better about myself because I look better than I do squeezed in to a size too small. Oh, and don’t sell those size 10’s…you’ll be needing them soon. Pack ‘em up and put them away.

I had my own mini-crisis as well. Last week I had to sit in on some training at work. They catered in breakfast and lunch because the training ran through both. Breakfast=Dunkin Donuts and Corner Bakery muffins and Lunch=Corner Bakery sandwiches (have you seen the points on those things?!). To make matters worse, I didn’t hit the gym at all last week. Be ashamed. I’m so sorry to report a gain. I hate that I am taking away from our large group loss. :(

AF is in town, so I expect that has my weight up a bit (plus I snacked a lot due to stress over a house problem). I'm in a new position at work - on my feet for at least 8 hours a day (when I'm there) and it's helping me not snack so much. Just need to stop snacking when I get home - if I do that, I think the weight will just tumble off!

Duh, this is week 5! I'm so lost.

week 5: 168 lbs.

Here's hoping I can add to our group loss next week. I have my wits firmly about me. I'm working in retail (Williams-Sonoma) and want to be able to wear all my cute slacks and tops and stuff at work. :) I'm a manager now so I have an excuse to pick up a few new things (something i haven't done in years) and I'd like to do that in a smaller size if possible.

I will say that working retail is lots of extra exercise - all that time on your feet walking around is crazy!

ETA: I'm a tad bit behind here - I thought this was week 4 and it is actually week 5. Duh! I didn't post last week (see post above) but did remember my weight (double ugh!). At least I lost this past week, right? Need to keep it up!!!

Honestly the counting calories thing made me crazy, so I don't do it anymore. Just try to watch the types of food I'm eating. Also, if I feel the need to fill up my plate, I try to do it with salad. ;) You'll lose that extra pound this week, I know it!!1

Just stopping by to cheer everyone on. I've been watching from the sidelines. I'm ready to jump back in on the next challenge. I'm basicly starting over at 140 lbs. I got off track the past month or so and ate whatever whenever I wanted. So I got back on my my diet today and workout routine so I'll chime in on the next challenge and hopefully I"ll have 5 lbs. off before the challenge even starts. :)

Kicking my butt back in here. Today I'm restarting my food journal- time to get back into the groove after a heck of a long ride the last week (BFP, then BFN blood test, then 5 days of unknown before AF finally came on Tues, followed by a bummed out food pity party). So yeah, the scale says 194.5, but I'm pretty sure the majority of that is water as you can't gain 2lbs of fat in 3 days.

so...

I can relate this last week I thought for sure I was prego then I was ambushed by AF on 12DPO so I was pretty shocked! I have no idea what week of the challenge this is. I have been travelling for work for the last few weeks, so I have been away from my scale. Today is my normal weigh in so I took a shot. I was a little nervous given that it is so hard to control your eating when you are on the road. Anyway, I am not sure what week to put this in as I think it encompassed a couple of them...i guess just throw it in this week's tally.
