i had some really yummy ones years ago - i'm remembering fish, asian slaw type veggies, with something more like a sweet and sour sauce. definitely more asian than mexican.
i'm looking more for technique/procedure than actual recipe. in particular, i want something where the fish is not deep fried.
any ideas?

I've made them before with grilled fish - like mahi or something like that. This is my made up version of the Rio Bravo fish tacos. It's all to taste, so I can't really give measurements.
soft corn tortillas
grilled fish
shredded cabbage
lime juice
coriander seed
cilantro
orange wedges
Toast the coriander seed and mix with the cabbage, lime juice, chopped cilantro, and cut up orange wedges. Put a layer of the cabbage mix in the corn tortilla, top with the fish, and add a bit of salsa. Dh likes to put a little sour cream on his but I like them w/out.

Well my technique mimics deep frying, but it produces very good fish tacos like we had in San Diego one time.
Take as much tilapia as you want and cut it into large dices/small strips.
Toss it in egg, then flour.
Spray a baking sheet with pam or EVOO spray and preheat oven to ~425
Spray it with pam or EVOO spray, and pop into the oven for 5-10 minutes or until done.
That's how we cook the fish. Usually we eat them with american style accoutrements - avocado, lime, etc...

seb's thanks for the fish procedure. that's kinda similar to how i make my chicken nuggets. and i usually have tons of tilapia in the freezer.
karen thanks also. i'll definitely try that spice combo. that sounds like what i was looking for.
maybe for dinner next week. . .

I love this recipe! No fried fish either.

not quite the asian style you were looking for but so tasty!
good luck!
ETA: we used soft flour tortillas though.

Let me preface this by saying that I am a horrible cook, but I make fish tacos at home a lot.
I use tilapia usually seasoned with lime/lemon, garlic, pepper, etc. Sometimes I throw some leftover dried taco seasoning on there if I have it around. I put it in the toaster oven on bake at about 375 for 10-12 minutes. Always turns out great for me. It's not necessarily asian flavored, although I think that could be easily achieved by using a soy/lime combo with a touch of sesame oil maybe?
