Just found this on iwon.com, from Liz Smith's column:

I CAN'T afford a whole new set of enemies," said Cecil Beaton, when asked why he didn't go into films.

EVERYTHING OLD is new again - and often better. Take Francis Ford Coppola's famous 1983 coming-of-age film, "The Outsiders." This is based on the S.E. Hinton novel that is still the number one novel taught in public schools.

The movie featured a hot ensemble of future stars, including Tom Cruise, Diane Lane, Matt Dillon, Rob Lowe, Patrick Swayze, Ralph Macchio, Emilio Estevez, C. Thomas Howell and Leif Garrett. Director Coppola is coming out with a refreshed version of his original cut - a new beginning, a new ending, a new score. It is, says Francis, more faithful to Hinton's novel.

"The Outsiders" will have a limited theatrical release in early September. By the end of that month, the revamped version will be available on DVD.

It will be interesting to see what Coppola has done in reworking a movie already considered seminal. And it is a blast watching these young actors before fame hit them upside the head.

Wow!! I can't believe it. I loved the book waaaay more than the movie, so hopefully this version will be better!

The Outsiders was one of my all time favorite books in middle school! I haven't seen the movie since then, either. Will have to buy that for sure when it comes out on DVD.

I think it's great!! I loved when they re-released Gone With the Wind and then the original Star Wars trilogy. I think it's great that my son can see the movies I've seen and loved in the way they were meant to be seen.

That is great. My sister and I were obsessed with the movie and book growing up. I think Ponyboy was the first love of my life. :D

okay, I'm with you all in that I *loved* this movie (and book) growing up. But the article said "a new beginning, a new ending, a new score. It is, says Francis, more faithful to Hinton's novel." That means it won't be the same movie that we all fell in love with, but a different movie. GWTW was the same movie just re-edited and colorized and stuff. I'm interested in learning more about this.

I remember reading this book in I want to say 8th or 9th grade... it was the first (and last) book that I had to read for school that I absolutely loved. I read that thing so many times, the book fell apart!
I've only seen the movie a couple of times, but I loved it as well (much less than the book, but it was still love LOL)... I can't wait to see what they do with it, hopefully making it better than the original, but with the feel of the original...

I absolutely loved this book and the movie but I also liked the book more. I must have read it 10 times easily. This is so cool! I can't wait until September now! :)
