View Full Version : 3 Yr Anniversay Trip - NYC, NOLA, or Miami?
Hi ladies! I need some advice. My DH and I are planning a weekend getaway for our 3 year anniversay. Our trip will be in late August. Should we visit:
NYC, New Orleans, or Miami?
We live in Michigan. We plan on being gone only 3 days, 4 days max because I dont' want to leave my DD that long.

I think it really depends on what you consider 'fun.' :)
I have been to all three places, and here is my honest take on all three:
Miami - Sun, fun, beaches, latin culture, parties! And don't forget H-O-T in August (but then again all 3 places will be boiling in late August so don't let this deter you.) Miami always seems to have so much energy and so much going on everytime we visit. It's a great place to either 1. lay out at the pool/beach or 2. do one of the 100 cultural, arts, shopping things going on at any given time.
New Orleans - Drinking, partying, history, old homes and beauty, French influence, late nights!! New Orleans is a beautiful city. The history there is so interesting and fun to explore. The nightlife on Bourbon Street is really second to none. Many cities (including where I live) have tried to duplicate Bourbon Street's fun energy and spirit, and none (IMO) have succeeded. It really is an entity onto itself! The bars do not close until something like 6 am, so there is always some sort of frivolity going on around the French Quarter! Like Miami, New Orleans will be hella hot when you go, so bring very comfortable and cool clothing!
New York City - Anything and Everything you could ever hope for in a city. 1 billion cultural, social, athletic, ethnic, and historical activities to do. I firmly believe you could live there for 30 years or more and never run out of things to do. It's got Broadway, the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Central Park, and Bergdorf Goodmans. Need I say more? heh heh NYC will be very hot, so again, wear the best 'walking outfits' that you have. I tend to walk a ton in NYC, although there are cabs every place you look and the subway is pretty easy to figure out.
Hope this gave you some insight into these cities. Remember - this evaluation is based on my opinion only and is open to praise or critique from any natives (or other visitors) of these places! lol. :D
Oh, and if it were me and my DH? We'd pick NYC. Actually, we are going in August, now that you mention it! :)

NYC has my vote! SOOO many things to do. Probably the closest to you, so you could spend more time there...

As Nylons73 said, it really depends on what you want to do. I love all 3 cities, but they're very different. Do you want cultural stuff, museums, great restaurants? Go to NYC. Beach time? Go to Miami. Partying & cajun food? NOLA. There's also a price issue. I bet NYC would be the most expensive of the 3. Personally, I think New Orleans might be unbearable at the end of August (especially if you're from Michigan and not used to hot humid weather). NYC & Miami are also hot, but it's nothing like the sticky hotness of NOLA.
I think we are leaning toward NYC. We'll probably check out a Broadway play, great restaurants, shopping, and some sightseeing.
Thanks for all of your responses! It helps to get other opinions on each city.

As much as I love my city..........previous posters are right. August in New Orleans is VERY humid! I wouldn't be here then if I didn't live here! Now if you were going in October, then I would say NOLA all the way!
My vote would be New York - there is so much to do. Look for a package deal and prices won't be as bad. Good luck!

We always stay the Edison when we go to the city overnight. It is an OLD hotel, and quite a bit of it has been remodled, but the hotel is half a block from Times Square (on 47th and Broadway), close to the subway, and is fairly cheap. With AAA you will can get a room for $140 a night - the rooms can be a little small, but since you don't spend much time in them, it is just fine.
One time, I spent a few nights in a room that had a view of the Stage Door to "The Boy from Oz" and I got to lust after Hugh Jackman from a far. Mmmmm.

Been to all three places often and I am from one of them--Miami. So I am biased. ;)
NY I could take or leave. Traffic, loud and just too much going on for me. That written, awesome museums, dining, shopping, Times Square is fun and seeing a show on Broadway is great.
New Orleans-great food, but smelly and dirty eta: in the popular places such as Borboun Street. Nice town, but just isn't my "cup of tea". On the good side, the French Quarter history is very interesting. I also enjoy the mansions in the Garden District.
Miami-Bad areas just like everywhere else. Beaches, dancing, food and more food. Great shopping, awesome history and just no shortage of things to do. Certainly there is no place in the world like South Beach. You risk travel woes because of hurricane season and yes--it is VERY HOT in August. But don't be misled-New York can also be VERY humid in August too. I recall a time I spent there last August where I thought I would never go back because I had NEVER experienced humidity like that in my life!
All three places have a lot to offer. Just figure out what you're really looking for? Hustle and Bustle? Trolleys and awesome Creole food or beaches and dancing? You'll have a good time no matter what! Bring back pics ;).

I'm in NYC and I love NYC, but I wanted to warn you that August in NY is hot hot hot. My parents usually come in August to visit (only time they can take vacation) and two years ago it rained every single day they were here! Last year it was just hot and humid.
NYC is a fab place to visit though!
