I love to visit new bookstores, especially when I'm on a vacation or other trip. While I haven't anything against "big box" stores like Borders or Barnes and Noble, there's just something about small independents sometimes- an extra flavor.
(Some might say that the extra flavor is ...mold... and while they might not be entirely wrong... well, let's just be a little more... romantic!)
Some of the best bookstores that I've discovered were the result of recommendations from friends and other book aficionados... so I'm hoping that you will share favorite spots, too!
Some that I've particularly liked:
BookWoman (http://ebookwoman.booksense.com/NASApp/store/IndexJsp) in Austin, TX
Book People (www.bookpeople.com) also in Austin, TX
The Strand (http://www.strandbooks.com/home/)in NYC
The Book Loft (http://www.bookloft.com) here in Columbus, OH
Kramerbooks (http://www.kramerbooks.com) in Dupont Circle, Washington DC
I know that I stumbled across a ton of great used bookstores in the French Quarter (New Orleans) two years ago, but can't recall the names of ANY. (Of course I came home with 12 books from that trip... oops!)
I'm itching to go to Powell's (http://www.powells.com/) in Oregon... doesn't look like it will happen soon, though.
So, share your favorite bookstores! :D
