Angelina Jolie gives birth to baby in Africa
No immediate word on the sex of child delivered at Namibian hospital
BREAKING NEWS

LOS ANGELES - Angelina Jolie gave birth to a baby in Africa on Saturday, according to her boyfriend Brad Pitt's publicist.
Jolie was scheduled to give birth to a baby daughter via Caesarian section at a hospital in Namibia, a celebrity magazine had earlier reported on its Web site.
There was no immediate word on the sex of the baby.
In Touch Weekly wrote that Jolie, 30, had planned to give birth to her child with Pitt at an African resort where they are staying, but doctors told Jolie she would be safer in a hospital.
“There’s nothing seriously wrong. They are expecting it all to be routine,” the magazine quoted an unnamed “insider” as saying.
In an e-mail to the Cannes Film Festival in the south of France on Tuesday, Pitt wrote he couldn’t attend the screening of his new film, “Babel,” due to “the imminent arrival of the newest addition to our family.”
The expected birth of the first biological child for both Jolie and Pitt, 42, has drawn intense media attention — and equally determined efforts by the couple to maintain their privacy.
Arriving at the coastal town of Walvis Bay last month, they have been shielded by their own bodyguards and Namibian police at the luxury Burning Shores resort hotel. Pitt and Jolie have largely kept out of sight along with her two adopted children, Maddox, 4, and Zahara, 16 months.
Both children have had their names legally changed to Jolie-Pitt.
Last month, the couple’s security chief gave a local journalist a statement signed by Pitt and Jolie asking that they be left alone.
Photographers have gotten a few shots, but for the most part, they have had to settle for photos of large, green barriers set up on the beach to block the view of prying lenses.
Samuel Nuuyoma, the governor of the Namibian province where the family is staying, has been quoted as saying he would visit the hospital and name the baby.
“No. No. That’s absolutely not true,” Nuuyoma, who has met the couple, told The Associated Press on Wednesday.
“I never said such a thing. Never in history,” he said, abruptly ending the phone conversation.
An informal poll by Namibian station Radio Wave determined that listeners were evenly divided on whether the day Jolie gives birth should be declared a national holiday, according to the station’s Web site.

CNN is reporting that the baby is a girl named Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt according to one of their publicists (I jumped right over after I saw sarahh's post and of course it's a headline on CNN!)

from People.com:
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have welcomed a baby girl, Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, a rep for the couple confirms exclusively to PEOPLE.
The child was born on May 27, at night, in the African country of Namibia.
The new parents, along with kids Maddox, 4, and Zahara, 1, have been staying at a luxury resort in Namibia since April, where their personal security team and Namibian police have shielded them from paparazzi.
Last week, the Namibian government said foreign journalists wishing to cover the birth must have written permission from Pitt and Jolie to enter the country and obtain a work permit.
The new girl is the couple's first biological child. Jolie adopted Maddox from Cambodia in 2002 and Zahara from Ethiopia last year. Pitt is in the process of legally adopting both children.
The baby is the latest step in a life-changing year during which Pitt and Jolie went from costars (in last summer's slick crime thriller Mr. and Mrs. Smith) to supercouple to, finally, Mommy and Daddy.
"It's the idea that you love one another and you want to create a family together," a friend of the couple's told PEOPLE earlier this year. "What's beautiful is you can do it by birth (or) by adoption."
Word that Angelina was pregnant first broke on Jan. 11, when representatives of both stars confirmed the baby news to PEOPLE after the actress and U.N. goodwill ambassador had confided to a charity aid worker in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic: "Yes, I'm pregnant."
The pregnancy news – which came shortly after Pitt's announcement that he planned to adopt Maddox and Zahara – might have been a media bombshell, but it was a natural progression for the pair who put nest-building on the fast track.
Jolie, 30, had long spoken about expanding her family, and told PEOPLE last October that she would like to adopt again. "There's something about making a choice, waking up and traveling somewhere and finding your family," she said.
Pitt, 42, has also often talked about wanting a family. He has no children from his 4-year marriage to Jennifer Aniston, which ended last year.
"I think he'll be wonderful (with the new baby)," Pitt's Assassination of Jesse James costar, Mary-Louise Parker, told PEOPLE earlier this year. "He's a great guy, conscientious and kind. I'm happy for both of them.
Shiloh is a very pretty name. I wonder when Brad is actually going to adopt Maddox & Zahara.

He already legally adopted them. Last November, I think.
I thought only their names had been changed.

It sounds nice, but it's also the name of a very bloody Civil War battle. That's the history geek in me speaking though.

I thought only their names had been changed.
The name change and the adoption happened around the same time. Here's an article from January that talks about it:
Brad Pitt has become the legal guardian of lover Angelina Jolie's adoptive children.
The handsome actor was granted parental rights to the children, four year old Maddox and baby Zahara, by Superior Court Judge Linda Lefkowitz a month after Jolie's lawyers filed the paperwork for the name change.
I like the name Shiloh. I went to school with a girl named Shiloh and always thought it was pretty, despite the Civil War reference. I actually like all the names Angelina chose for her kids. They're all uncommon names, but not weird/made-up/trendy/pretentious like some other celeb kids.
I wonder if Brad and Angelina will stay in Africa for a while, since they seem to have been pretty successful in keeping the press off their backs there.

Snips from Perez Hilton.com...
On Jennifer Aniston's reaction...
- Life & Style have exclusively learnt that just moments after hearing of the news Jen reached out to Brad to congratulate both him and Angelina on the arrival of their first born.
- "Jen got the news late on Saturday afternoon," a source close to the actress tells Life & Style. "And at first she was really surprised because she had heard it was going to be a boy. After some debate with Vince, Jen decided to call Brad's manager and give congratulations from them both."
- "I think Jen is really proud of herself for swallowing her pride and getting over her personal feelings to pass on her best wishes to the whole family. But Jen also says she's as curious as anyone else to see what the baby looks like, and for her, that's where the real suspense is!"
And with more details on the birth/baby...
Our friends at In Touch have been putting everyone else to shame!
Not only were they the first to announce that Angelina Jolie was pregnant, and the first to declare that she would give birth in Nimibia (months ago), but they were also the first to mention that she had a c-section delivery scheduled for Saturday, which was true, and that the baby would be a girl, also true.
They've also been the only media outlet giving us details about little Shiloh since she was born.
According to In Touch:
- Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt is described as "a beautiful baby - she has brown hair like Angelina, and Brad's nose," says an insider.
- The baby was born at the Cottage Hospital in Swakopmund, Namibia
- Brad was with Angelina's former makeout partner brother, James Haven, waiting anxiously in the hallway, says the insider.
- Angelina is described as doing "very well."
- Their families are thrilled. "He loves children - he's very good with them," Brad's grandmother Betty Russell tells In Touch.
- "We just want them to relax and enjoy the whole thing," Brad's brother, Doug Pitt told In Touch. "I just want him to be able to enjoy the experience as much as possible without too much pressure. It's going to be great for them."
- Samuel Nuuyoma, governor of the Erongo region of Namibia, issued a statement saying, "I wish Angelina and Brad good luck and a healthy life with their beautiful daughter... Just like Angelina, this precious Namibian-born baby will be our ambassador."

If I'm not mistaken Brad is close to his family. And with the internet it makes it much easier. We dont know if Brad's brother talks to her often when he talks to Brad. My brother is on the wast coast and I'm on the west and when his son was born i got pics in my mailbox. so I dont think if you're already close you will lose it because you're out of the country. We have too many gadgets now days for that not to happen.

Jolie and New Baby Doing Well in Namibia (http://cnn.netscape.cnn.com/news/story.jsp?idq=/ff/story/0001/20060529/0602349415.htm&sc=1402&photoid=20060126NY125)

WINDHOEK, Namibia (AP) - It looks like Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt got what every parent wants - a healthy baby.
While Namibian officials declined Sunday to give any details on the birth Saturday of Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, a doctor at the hospital said there were no complications and the mother and daughter were doing well.
``She is a healthy baby,'' the doctor said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release information.
Police ringed the hospital with tight security Sunday, refusing to admit journalists and photographers into the building.
Pitt's publicist Cindy Guagenti announced the birth Saturday night, but said no other information or photographs would be released.
Samuel Nuuyoma, the governor of the Namibian region of Erongo, confirmed the birth at the Welwitschia Clinic in Walvis Bay and seemed to hint that key details would be released shortly.
``Any information relating to the birth of the baby will be made available to the public soon,'' said Nuuyoma, who has become friends with the celebrity couple.
The government has gone to extraordinary lengths to protect the privacy of Jolie and Pitt, who came to Namibia to avoid photographers and in the weeks leading up to the birth of their first child.
Namibia put tight security around their hotel and the hospital, set up large green barriers to protect their privacy from photographers and refused to grant visas to any foreign journalists unless they had written permission from Jolie and Pitt to cover the birth.
Police have also arrested photographers and confiscated film.
In Springfield, Mo., where Pitt graduated from Kickapoo High School in 1982 and his parents and siblings remain, Pitt's family said they were delighted.
``It's an exciting time for Brad and Angie, and we are really happy for them and the kids,'' Brad's brother, Doug Pitt, told the News-Leader in an e-mail.
Speculation about the birth escalated Tuesday when Pitt sent an e-mail to the Cannes Film Festival that he was unable to attend the screening of his new film ``Babel'' because of the baby's ``imminent arrival.''
In ``Babel,'' directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, the 42-year-old Pitt plays a husband and father trying to cope with a crisis on vacation in Morocco. Cate Blanchett plays Pitt's wife, and the film also stars Gael Garcia Bernal.
``I am tremendously proud of `Babel' and want to congratulate everyone involved for this great achievement,'' Pitt said in the e-mail.
Jolie and Pitt were linked romantically shortly after appearing together in the 2005 movie ``Mr. and Mrs. Smith.''
Jolie, 30, is a frequent visitor to Africa and serves as goodwill ambassador for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees. She has two adopted children: toddler Zahara, from Ethiopia, and 4-year-old Maddox, from Cambodia. Both had their surnames legally changed to Jolie-Pitt after Pitt announced his intentions to adopt the children as well.
Pitt and actress Jennifer Aniston divorced last fall.
Jolie, who won an Oscar for her supporting role in 1999's ``Girl, Interrupted,'' is divorced from Billy Bob Thornton and Jonny Lee Miller.

Jolie and Pitt Give to Namibian Hospitals (http://cnn.netscape.cnn.com/news/story.jsp?idq=/ff/story/0001/20060529/1416381069.htm&sc=1402&photoid=20060126NY125)
WINDHOEK, Namibia (AP) - Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt celebrated the birth of their daughter in Namibia by donating $300,000 to help other babies in this impoverished southern African country, according to a government statement Monday.
Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, born Saturday at Welwitschia Clinic in Walvis Bay, could get Namibian citizenship, government officials added.
While Welwitschia is private, most Namibians rely on state hospitals like one in Walvis Bay and another in Swakopmund that were to benefit from the celebrity couple's gift. The couple also pledged $15,000 for a school and a community center in Swakopmund. The couple had visited the center during their stay in the country.
Deputy Environment and Tourism Minister Leon Jooste said in the statement the money will be used to improve the two hospitals' maternity wards and will contribute significantly to the health of Namibian babies.
``We want to contribute to Namibia and the people who have been so gracious to us at this time,'' the celebrities were quoted as saying in the statement.
Pitt and Jolie had retreated to Namibia in April to avoid media attention while awaiting the birth of their third child, and the government here had rallied to them. Officials put tight security around their hotel and the hospital where their daughter was born, set up large green barriers on the beach to shield them from photographers and refused to grant visas to foreign journalists unless they had written permission from Jolie and Pitt to cover the birth. Police have also arrested photographers and confiscated film.
``The couple is thoroughly overjoyed by the event and have expressed their happiness to be able to share this experience in Namibia,'' said Monday's statement.
In another statement, Jooste's ministry said Namibian law allowed for the newborn to automatically become a Namibian citizen by birth. The statement said the citizenship issue will be discussed with the couple later.
While Namibian officials declined to give any details on the birth, a doctor at the hospital said there were no complications and the mother and daughter were doing well.
``She is a healthy baby,'' the doctor said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release information.
Samuel Nuuyoma, the governor of the Namibian region of Erongo, confirmed the birth at the Welwitschia Clinic in Walvis Bay Sunday and on Monday and told the media that mother and baby were both healthy and doing very well.
``They are just fine, they are enjoying their lives,'' said Nuuyoma.
Pitt's publicist Cindy Guagenti announced the birth Saturday night, but said no other information or photographs would be released.

I know a lot of people don't like Brangelina, but I do. I know they each have failed relationships in their past, but they really seem to be in love and on the same page. And I'm happy for them that they have a healthy baby girl. Maddox and Zahara are clearly loved, and I hope they're adjusting to their baby sister.

I'm generally indiferent about them (individually and as a couple), but I greatly respect that they "put their money [and time] where they mouth is."

I love them together!! I think Angelina is more approachable than JA.
They honesly seem cute together and just afraid if they get married it would ruin what they have. Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell are the same way.
