DH and I are planning a trip to St. Lucia in January with my mom and her husband. We will be going for a week. We do not want to stay at an All-inclusive (we are going to an AI in Mexico in 2 weeks for our anniversary). We would like to find a villa with two or more bedrooms OR find a resort where you can get your own cottage (I know there are some places like that). We would even be interested in a regular resort that was not too commercial and was sort of on the smaller side. Any suggestions?

I stayed at Ladera on my honeymoon and I remember it as one of the most unique and romantic resorts I've ever stayed at. For perspective, I do a lot of travel writing so I've been to a lot of resorts! Each room is built without a fourth wall so it's completely open to the outside, but each is still completely private. The resort is at the top of a mountain, with the twin peaks of volcanos on either side, looking down lush landscaping to a beach below. Incredible!

Each room also has its own plunge pool on the balcony--we got a two room suite so we had two small pools, one with a small waterfall that led into the pool below it.

I think there's a total of about 20 or 25 rooms there.

We also stayed at Anse Chastenet, which is similar but larger, and we didn't find the service to be as good there.

Here's the two web sites...

www.ladera.com
www.ansechastenet.com

ETA:
Oops--I just realized that it looks like you want to be able to share a villa with two bedrooms, not get two independent rooms. I'm not sure if either of these have that kind of set-up, but you can check...

tenofcups: Thanks so much - Ladera sounds like a definite possibility. We don't necessarily need to have two rooms that are together. It's more important that we don't go to the traditional giant AI resort. Not that those aren't nice - just not what we want for this trip.

We just got back from both Ladera and Anse Chastenet and loved them both. The location at Anse was fabulous - right on the beach. Ladera was amazing, although they blew it and misbooked us for our first night, so we were confined to the 'plan b' room, which is about 1/20th the size of the normal rooms, small and dark, not facing the ocean. To their credit, they didn't charge us for the night, but it was still a huge damper on our stay as the weather was raining in sheets and we were trapped in a small dark room. Sigh.

Anyhow - St. Lucia was just gorgeous. The other place that was recommended was the LaSport (used to be the Hilton Jalousie) and Ti Kaye Village (although I don't know if they have beach access).

Thanks Chortles! We actually just booked our trip for January. We will be splitting our time between Ti Kaye and Stonefield Estate Villas. Ti Kaye is on the west side of the island and Stonefield is right next to the Pitons. Ti Kaye does have beach access - it is supposed to be on an amazing beach where you can snorkel right off the beach. We have a cottage there and a villa with a plunge pool at Stonefield. I am so excited to go! I would love to hear any recommendations that you or anyone else has on sights to see or trips to take in St. Lucia.

Have a great trip Rosa!

We did a water taxi trip to Castries that was interesting. We also really loved the restaurant, Dashene, at Ladera. faaaaabulous food (pricey, though - think $33 entrees).

It poured rain for many days, so we did a lot of hanging out in the rooms relaxing and reading. We also are big scuba divers, so we spent a ton of time underwater :)

We stayed at Ti Kaye on our honeymoon in April 2002 and it was amazing. the views from your bed are incredible and the beach is spectacular. All the big resorts bring their guests there for snorkeling. The best tours we did from the hotel were the sunset cruise on a tall ship and the friday night fish fry.

Thanks so much chortles and isobel! I'm glad to hear from someone who stayed at Ti Kaye and really liked it. I was thinking I really wanted to take a sunset cruise, so I will put that on my list for sure. I also definitely plan on spending some time underwater :) I have heard the snorkeling is great at Ti Kaye. I'm not sure about the other place.

Have you already been to tripadvisor.com? That's a great source for hotel reviews.

Also, check out this site:

The Honeymoon Bio (http://www.theknot.com/co_profileview.htm?profilename=TheHoneymoonBio)

Click on "trip reviews" at the top of the page. There are lots of reviews of Ladera and the other hotels on the island, plus photos.

I went on my honeymoon there after my first wedding (I've since divorced and am about to be married to FH -- this Sunday!). It was probably my all-time favorite resort -- and that's saying something since I was a travel writer for many years and have done a lot of resort trips ;) . I remember it as incredibly romantic and unlike any other place I've been.

Not sure I can really think of any advice per se, except perhaps to be careful about the shoes you wear: There are a lot of windy, hilly paths and steps so even though I brought some funky shoes with me, I don't think I wore any of them.

I'm sure you'll love it there--have fun!

stacyb: You are going to LOVE Ti Kaye - it is amazing! I get freaked out by bugs and lizards and stuff and I was fine in the outdoor showers. In fact, they were great! We never had any creatures in ours at all. And they are totally private. There is no chance anyone is seeing in (at least with ours I know that).

The food is also fantastic and the service is great.

I willl be happy to answer any other questions you have or to post a few pictures on here if you really have problems getting to my journal. But I think you just need a few more posts and you should be able to get in. It would be easier if you could go there because I have TONS of photos and a good recap.

Good luck!

So ... tell me about St. Lucia.

I've researched hotels, but beyond that, my knowledge of the island is nil. It looks beautiful and we're considering a Caribbean vacation in the next 6-8 months, so any information you can provide will be very helpful. I'd especially like feedback from people who've been there in the past couple of years as sometimes you can't really rely on guide books to be all that honest.

Thanks!

Hi! I don't know how firm you are on going to that specific island, but we just got back from St. Croix and it was absolutely wonderful! We met several people from St. Lucia, though, and they said it was a beautiful island too. If you want more info on St. Croix, let me know. It was nice to be in "another world" so to speak, but still on US soil.

I honeymooned in St. Lucia in 2003 at the Jalousie Resort when it was managed by the Hilton. We loved the island for its lush, mountainous, rugged beauty. Actually, I chose the island because one of my favorite places is Hawaii and this was one of the few islands in the Caribbean that seemed to have a similar feel...topographically anyway.

St. Lucia is good if you like nature-based activities and a lush, tropical climate.
The beach is okay....not picture-perfect-turquoise-see-your-toes-water, but perfectly swimmable and enjoyable. The main draw St. Lucia has is it looks like the Fantasy Caribbean island that everyone dreams about.
We enjoyed hiking through the rainforest and swimming in the waterfalls the most on the Island. There's also a "drive-thru volcano" that's so highly touted, but really it's just sulphuric craters that are the remains of the volcano. The botanical gardens are also very beautiful. We took a tour that combined both the volcano & gardens in one day.

St. Lucia also has a lot of "funky" accommodations depending on your tastes & tolerance that would definitely enhance your visit. Since we were honeymooning, we chose the Jalousie. Great location w/resort amenities. Also, the infrastructure of the island doesn't lend itself to just walking around outside of your hotel to explore. You either have to rent a car (if you're courageous enough) or take taxis/tour vans everywhere.
One more thing, this is not the Island for active nightlife or fine dining. It's pretty much all about enjoying the view. :-)

Thanks for the information Blossom. I'd heard there's some "civil unrest" in St. Lucia and that outside of the resort areas, it's somewhat unsafe for tourists. I imagine if it was too unsafe, I'd have heard more about why. What was your impression?

Also, are you familiar with either the Windjammer Landing? That is one if the resorts that is a possibility.

What about the Marigot Bay area?

Thanks for the links, Rosebud. I'll check them out.

I think I posted in one of the other St. Lucia threads, but FH and I spent 5 days in St. Lucia this past January. We opted to stay at The BodyHoliday LeSport because we were very into the included spa treatments (its all-inclusive only resort). Plus, we didnt want to be around any obnoxiious teens/children and The BodyHoliday is pretty much adults-only and mostly British tourists. We actually never left the resort, so the only bit of the island we saw was on the way from the airport to the resort (via helicopter) and then back (via taxi). We both had a fabulous time . . . just lots of relaxing on the beach and lounging around the spa.

Hmmm, I never heard about any civil unrest on the island. However, I haven't been keeping up too much w/the latest news for St. Lucia. I will say I never felt uncomfortable on the island and the locals I encounted were hospitable.

I did see Marigot Bay area. If you stayed there it would be a central based location between North & South. There's a lot of private boats and charters in that area. I'm not familiar w/the Windjammer.
I just remembered, we also went to a neighborhood near there for a weekly food festival. I remember they made us each a whole fresh lobster for $20. It was a very mixing-with-the-locals-street-fair type of event. I forgot what it's called but it's in all the St. Lucia brochures I'm sure.

Its the "Seafood Friday" in Anse La Raye.

The windjammer Resort is in the Marisule area, that's midway between the capital Castries and Gros Islet where Sandals Grande, Le Sport etc. are located. The hotel itself is about a 10 minute drive from the main road, haven't been there in awhile so I can't say about the state of the road itself.

The Marigot Bay area is much more relaxed, because its not really a bustling community, as Blossom said, it caters alot to people who enjoy boating activities.

There is no civil unrest in the country. As you will find with alot of places that cater to tourists, certain street vendors might be aggressive to try to get a sale or whatnot.

Any other questions?

Like Blossom, DH and I also stayed at the Jalousie for our honeymoon. But don't worry that it will be all honeymooners-- we were the only ones there. Anyway, we LOVED it. Here's an excerpt from my tripadvisor.com review:

http://images.snapfish.com/33%3A5284323232%7Ffp46%3Dot%3E2329%3D429%3D446%3DX ROQDF%3E23234%3C93%3A9%3B72ot1lsi

A fabulous week of St. Lucian sunshine at the Jalousie Hilton.

It all started when we got off the airplane at Hewanorra Airport and took the hour-long taxi ride to the town of Soufriere. It was soooo worth it. Frommer''s called southwestern St. Lucia the lushest, most beautiful part of the island. I never saw any other part but that must be right. :) When we got to the Jalousie, a gentleman met us with cool towels and rum punch. After check-in a shuttle arrived to take us to our villa furter up the hill. We were blown away by the beach and the beauty of the place beauty of the place. Our little villa truly became home and the view from our villa was stunning. It was -as the agent promised- an ocean view. The Hilton has 65 villas and 37 villa-suites. We did the all-inclusive plan and spent the week being treated like stars. It was really something. The St. Lucians are very warm people. They took to us immediately and looked after all our needs. The Jalousie has four restaurants: The Plantation (upscale), The Pier (casual), The Veranda (strictly for breakfast), and the Bayside (the beach eatery). The food at all of the restaurants was a mix of St. Lucian dishes and western dishes... and I have to say that it was all pretty good! On most days we woke up, went to breakfast, swam, played on the beach, had drinks, went to lunch- or had lunch and drinks brought right to us under our hut on the beach- (I highly recommend this!), went on excursions, took naps, and then got ready for dinner. Jalousie restarants ask that you make reservations for dinner- we were NEVER turned down, even when calling only 15 minutes in advance- and dress casually (men in slacks, women in light dresses). The restaurants often have live entertainment and local bands. Our last night at Jalousie we had a great time dancing at the Pier. Of the excursions we took, I recommend Diamond Falls, The Mineral Baths, The Drive-In Volcano, and the Botanical Gardens. We didn''t really find any downsides- at least, not for us personally. But people looking for non-stop night-life might be disappointed, as would anyone looking for a constant string of activities. We found all of Soufriere to be very laid back. Strong suggestion-- if you stay at Jalousie ask to have a room in the 300s or 400s. We took the shuttle all over and noticed that some people in the lower levels were too close to the helicopter pad... and that people in the higher numbers had bigger villas but not as nice a view.

Thanks so much ladies. We're always very wishy washy about our vacations right up until we book something, so this information (and photos) is going a long way to help make up my mind. Now let's just hope our timeshare doesn't screw us over and we can actually stay somewhere good.

I'm also going to check out luxurylink.com to see about a couple of the resorts that are mentioned here.

ETA: also, thanks for the feedback regarding the "civil unrest" I mentioned. I went back through all of my information and it turns out the person who told me this is a bit of a "the sky is falling" type and somewhat melodramatic anyway. They stayed at a Sandals resort so maybe it's just something someone there told them and they were passing along the incorrect information. Glad to hear that's not the case.

My BIL just got married in St. Lucia about 2 weeks ago. We all stayed at the Sandals Regency Resort. The island is beautiful and I found the people of St. Lucia to be extremely friendly and helpful. We didn't venture much from the Sandals resort, but we did go snorkeling and drive around the island while traveling to and from the airport. We were not told/warned of any civil unrest while we were staying there, in fact, I felt quite safe.

Anyone been? My husband and I are planning a "babymoon" vacation in the late winter/early spring (Marchish?) and are considering this resort. Reviews are somewhat mixed, so I figured I'd ask here if anyone had been to this particular place.

Other experiences in St. Lucia (or other islands in the Caribbean - DH and I haven't traveled to that part of the world before so have no experience) are more than welcome as well.

Thanks!

amy_awesome- I don't have personal experience with St. Lucia, but several of my friends honeymooned at Ti Kaye Resort (http://www.tikaye.com/) and absolutely raved about it. Did you look into that place? I believe it gets excellent reviews on TripAdvisor as well.

Hopefully others can give you feedback on Rendezvous. Oh, and if you look in the "frequently used threads" post, there are links to threads on a bunch of other Caribbean islands if you want to research those as well. Have fun planning!

The Jalousie was purchased by another hotel chain- maybe SunSwept Resorts?- not that long ago. I believe they may still be undergoing renovations. But it is still called Jalousie.

My how time flies. I am already considering returning to St. Lucia to celebrate my five-year anniversary at the Jalousie. <sigh>

Amy_awesome, I would choose your resort very carefully based on your comfort level for your pregnancy.

To get to many resorts you will have to take a long, cab ride along winding roads. If you stay on the south side, I HIGHLY recommend you take the helicopter ride, which is about 10 minutes versus a 60-90 car ride. We arrived too late for the helicopter and I practically turned green during the cab ride! I had to make the driver pull over and I sat in front! I made sure we took the helicopter going back.

FYI, for anyone in the NY metro area, American Airlines now flies to St. Lucia direct on Sundays from JFK.:)

When I was in St. Lucia last year, I went to the Jalousie beach (we were staying in a villa close by for part of our stay). It was the Hilton Jalousie then, and it was beautiful! The beach is incredible - one of the most amazing beaches I have ever been too.

I agree with Blossom about being careful if you are going to St. Lucia while PG. Ti Kaye, for example probably would not be great. It is something like 150 stairs down to the beach - totally worth it, but probably not the best for PG ladies :)

Ohh. I just had to click here and now Im doomed! I am thinking of a "babymoon" vacation (in a couple of years!) but this looks perfect for that!

My question is...where do you fly into? Are there a bunch of different planes to catch? Ill be leaving from Nashville, TN...

Blossom
12-07-2007, 09:08 AM
I believe the international airport code for St. Lucia is UVF. The airport is small so it doesn't have a lot of big planes with direct flights from the USA.

The last time I went I took American Air with a connecting flight in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Also, when you arrive in St. Lucia, there's a helicopter shuttle service at the airport that goes to the southern end of the island. Otherwise, you hire a cab or arrange transportation w/your hotel beforehand. Some hotels like the Sandals resorts have complimentary bus shuttles for guests.

rosa727
12-07-2007, 10:16 AM
airport: When we flew, we got a flight from Richmond to Atlanta and then to St. Lucia. So they do go direct from ATL. We rented a car, so we just picked that up at the airport.

Oh, I should also mention that Stonefield Estate Villas is an amazing place to stay. It sits right up in the Pitons, and it is right near the Jalousie. You have privileges at their beach and a complimentary shuttle will take you there. The cool thing about Stonefield is that you have you own house (they range in size).

This was the view from our villa (and that is our own private pool!):

It is actually quite affordable too. It is family-owned by a St. Lucian family too, which is nice. They can tell you all about the coolest stuff to do that most tourists don't find out about.

ETA: sorry my picture is so big!

When we went in early 2006 we left from DFW and flew through Miami, on American Airlines.

I'd ditto the helicopter part, at least for one of the trips to/from the airport. We did it on the way there, one) because we were already so tired from traveling all day and just wanted to *be* there and two) the luggage could take up to 2 hours to arrive (it went via shuttle and not helicopter) and we didnt want to risk it not getting there in time for the flight.

Thanks everyone!

Rosa- Which did you like better, Stonefield or Ti Kaye? What were the pros and cons to both? I have no preference right now about anything since its so early in the planning process, but I didnt know about which area I should try. Those two hotels are my front runners for now, they look amazing (and a good price!)

ambula: Oh my gosh - you can't go wrong with either one! It is hard to say which I liked better because they were quite different (though neither was very commercial feeling). I think Stonefield may actually win out, but here are my pros and cons:

Stonefield:
Pros: AMAZING location right in the Pitons and also very close to Soufriere for groceries and stuff (since the villas do have kitchens); really great staff that made you feel like you were staying in their home; easy access to two incredible beaches (Jalousie through a shuttle and another one by a short hike); also close to Anse Chastenet (and you have privileges there), and their beach is in the "1,000 Places to See Before You Die" book; really great restaurant/bar; close to Ladera, which has a great restaurant too; most villas have their own pool and there is a pretty big resort pool with incredible views

Cons: Not sitting right on the beach (but the flip side is a pro since it sits up in the cliffs, giving you amazing views); does sit close to the rainforest, so you can be prone to random showers that come out of nowhere

Ti Kaye:
Pros: VERY secluded; really good restaurant (they have 3 options for dinner each night, but they are different every night and all amazing); beautiful secluded beach with great snorkelling right there (turtles, tons of fish, coral, etc.); very romantic - lots of honeymooners; you get your own separate cottage; very cool outdoor showers that are totally private and huge (there is a garden in each shower)

Cons: VERY secluded (depends on what you are looking for) - you can really only reasonably go to their restaurant for dinner because the road in and out is crazy BUT they do a shuttle to the local fish fry on Friday nights, which is a great additional option for at least one night; the beach is over 100 steps down from the resort, but there is a restaurant down there, so you can get drinks and lunch without heading back up to your room; small pool; Sandals sometimes brings boats to snorkel off the beach and the people swim in to the beach, so for about an hour or two most days they are there. No kitchen, if you want that.

Anyway, I have about a million pictures and just loved both, so if you want to see pictures of anything specific or have any specific questions, I'll try to oblige :) And when you decide to go, I have a few little restaurants I have to tell you about. We found some really cool local places through the owners at Stonfield.
