DH and I are throwing our first party this summer -- the theme is A Midsummer Night. I am thinking lots of flowers and candles everywhere (concidentally, things I like :D ). Any suggestions?

Also (Disco Diva, perhaps you can help me here, so please contact me!), do you know if there are people out there who are able to burn a CD or two for us with a sort of 70s and 80s party mix, so we don't have to keep running to the CD player, switching off from Prince (giving away my age) to the Bee Gees (giving away DH's age) to some mellow Sting (ah, ysolde's college years!), followed by the B52s and maybe a little TomTom Club? The last time we had people over, I spent way too much time and energy trying to put the right CDs into our (one-CD) player. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, and how does one do hors d'oeuvres, anyway? I am thinking I am not having a dinner party for 40 people (we live in Manhattan), so cocktails and hors d'oeuvres will have to do, but I don't want my guests to go hungry or end up drunk from lack of food. How do I feed them without a sit down meal? I feel like such a novice!

You can do heavy hors d'oeuvres. Also, have you considered a mashed potato bar? A wedding I went to in 2004 had one and it was awesome. A scoop of mashed potatoes goes in a martini glass and then people put their own toppings on. Yummy!

Hmm...how about spanikopita? That can be cut into bite sized pieces and served as hors d'oeuvres.

I'll post again if I can think of more ideas.

For music you could also plug your Ipod up (if you have one) to your stereo and then you wouldn't need to worry about CD's.

Are you cooking the food or having it catered?
