I have never been to a party with such great tablescapes (didn't even know there was such a word until this thread!). I would be blown away if someone put that much effort into a table!.....very cool indeed.

Wow. Beats the hell out of my usual Chinet and paper napkins! :p

Ok question...I'm throwing a baby shower in a few weeks and bought paper (gasp!) plates and napkins, and plastic cutlery because frankly there are just too many people to use real dishes.
The shower will be outdoors....would it be weird if I laid out the table with the plates and stuff even though it's not super nice dinnerware? Do you think the plates will blow away??
TIA!

gardenmommy - if you notice a couple of the tablescapes above, they are also paper plates with plastic cutlery, so I don't think there is anything wrong with it. ;) I would be concerned about the plates blowing away though. Trying to think of something to weigh them down.. maybe wrap the cutlery in a napkin to look like a bunting blanket - or fold the napkin in half corner to corner, then bring the bottom peak up and fold over the side ones to the center; fasten with a safety pin (dollar store pins) (like an old style diaper) and then have the cutlery in the 'diaper' and the tops fanned out - on top of the plate. (or would that skeeve anyone out???) I think that would be cute, and as long as it isnt terribly windy, should be enough to hold things down. You could also use a little tab of double sided tape - to anchor the plates to your tablecloth, (trouble is, people usually like to 're-position' their plates, even a tiny little bit - and if you are using paper tablecloths, that would probably rip them and make a bit of a mess -but if you are placing the plates on cloth or directly on the table? that would work well). Please take some pics - cant wait to see what you come up with.

That black and white table is just amazing!!!! I would like to see some real life pix of what others here have done. Let's try our hand at it and see what we can come up with....it's a great excuse to entertain!

Gorgeous. I want to modify (scale down) some of those pictures for the next holiday we host. The Christmas one with candy canes seems fun and easy enough.
So where does the food go in one of these? We eat with the food on the table family style, is this assumed to be plated food from a kitchen or a buffet table elsewhere?

Thats a very good point HollyMN. It does look like some of these would be for plated food style, and I think some of these might be 'staged' tables as well - a lot skinnier than what we would use - but nice for pictures. I think you can easily adjust the look to fit your table - instead of 5 candles have three - or have smaller versions of things. The one that's got me is the 'M&M' one at the beginning - how in the world could you put plates down? but maybe its just for the initial effect, then you can move stuff. :D

I love this first one. Most of us have white tablecloths and a set of white dinnerware. How fun to jazz it up with some really colorful flowers and zebra print name cards.

Since I was having a dinner guest over, my good friend M, I knew I would be setting a nice table. So I took the time to do a dress rehearsal for Christmas Day. There will be 6 of us. We will eat in the kitchen due to FIL's wheelchair and the table height is better for him.

Myra - thanks! I'm a little bummed we're not eating in the dining room, but I realize that's selfish as FIL would probably prefer to not be in a wheelchair, also.
Maplekitty - Good to know. I've been looking for something like that!

Beautiful J! I have been searching for Christmas/holiday china or dinnerware FOREVER, and can't seem to find anything that catches my eye really. I love the colors you have (my regular dinnerware is white - and have a few sets of chargers in different colors - but kitchen is usually done in red and white). So anyway - what kind are your 'feature' salad plates? (not sure if thats the correct name) but the ornament ones. I know the ornaments are various colors but they are gorgeous. Can you point me in the right direction for some options. I search and search and seem to always come up with the Spode Christmas tree one - which are also nice, but just wanted something a bit different.

No problem.
My accent plates are by William Roberts, which I bought from Ross Simons. They are no longer available through Ross Simons but they are on Ebay, which you can find by searching for William Roberts Ornament Dessert Plates (I couldn't follow the results of my search as Ebay is blocked by my employer and I am at work).
They are a set of eight plates with ornaments in red, green, blue and purple with a wide, scalloped, gold rim.

I got them to dress up my fine china, which is "Gotham" by Haviland. It is a family heirloom set, and a little plain to me (ivory plates with simple gold rim), but it was intact and passed to me so I gladly accepted it.
I placed red chargers underneath - I got them at Target - 4 for $6.99!

jajacobsen - gorgeous. I love the ornament plates, especially. I also got the bargain chargers at Target; can't wait to use them!
