To start, I couldn't find the "What can't you live w/out" thread on LJ in order to reply to your question. I hadn't used LJ before the great blackout incident, so I couldn't figure out how to make a new thread. So, I hope you find this...
The de-frizz stuff I use is a Matrix product called "Glow Trix." It's in a small red bottle that has an orange plastic cap. It's usually around $15.00 a bottle. I love it b/c you can put it on when you hair is wet or dry and it always keeps the frizzies under control for me without buying a whole set of de-frizz products.

HI... i'm not really sure what she asked, but i'm thinking it's about CURL FRIZZ! I use Zero Frizz Hair Serum and really like it for my curls! It's like $4-5.

Hi Curlygirl!! A co-worker of mine had VERY curly hair and she swore (well, maybe that's too strong), but she really liked and had great success with OUIDAD products. www.ouidad.com
Have you ever tried these? I, personally, haven't tried them? But, she had even gone to the Ouidad salon in New York and she looked fabu!

Is this becoming the curly girl thread? Or maybe we should start one.
I've been to Ouidad, but now I go to Devachan. Their salon is amazing, but their products are even better. They cut curly hair dry there so the shape is closer to what you actually deal with when your hair dries!
The program is called Curly Girl (some folks shorten it to CG) and it advocates using fewer products, to simplify your routine, including a non-sulfate cleanser (instead of shampoo).
The owner wrote the book Curly Girl (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0761123008/qid=1120170300/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_ur_1/102-3271667-4157727?v=glance&s=books&n=507846)
The website for the salon is here Devachan Salon (http://www.devachansalon.com/devachan/home.html)
Ok, I'll stop now, but seriously, my hair has never felt better or looked better since doing the CG program.

Same boat as you...usually straight but curly when rainy.
I have to blow dry straight everyday. I alterante shampoo between Garnier Fructiss, Herbal Essense, Salon Selectives and Thermasilk. I use the Fine Hair Formula.
I let my hair air dry for maybe 10 minutes, then add in this order
Dove (its a clear gel in an upside down bottle)
Bead Head (something straighening--it is hot pink gel)
Some type of Mousse for fine hair
Dove Straight & Soft (another upside bottle)
then clip into sections and blow dry out and set curl with curling iron...then finish off with
Dove Anti-frizz (it is a pump)
I got the Dove stuff as a free sample from a board on WC and I liked it. I use to be obsessed with KMS flat-out. It is very hard to find and kinda pricey. I think the dove is the same consistency as KMS.

I have curly hair and hate it. I've been straightening since high school. I haven't bought a CHI straightener yet because when Hot Tools came out with their ceramic one, I just didn't like the results.
I use a professional curling iron to straighten mine! First I make really loose curls, and then gradually striaghten them.
I love BioSilk Silk Therapy...but I'm onto a new product: Bumble&Bumble Straight. It's all I use along with hairspray and I love it!

SoCo - just wanted to say you have gorgeous curls!
I'm a curly/wavy girl too, and I've started wearing it natural much more than I used to. For going straight I really haven't found anything I love. Aveda smells heavenly though. I love the Curls Rock for curly days!

My hair is super curly. I hardly ever straighten it because I don't feel like wasting that time...I wash my hair every day.
But when I do straighten on that rare occassion, I have to let my hair dry a bit before using anything (straightener). I can NOT use a blowdryer....forget it! I usually pull in a pony tail and let it dry that way. Then I use a curling iron to straighten, although I do have a ceramic straightener. As far as product, I really don't use much....although from the looks of my bathroom cabinets, you would think otherwise. I just hate having sticky hair!

My hair is about 3 inches below my shoulder and I have long layers. After I wash and condition my hair I use bumble & bumble leave in conditioner. I let my hair air dry for about 15 minutes, then I use a straightening product. I feel like I have tried them all. So far my favorite product is phytodefrisant, although it does have a strange smell. This is the only product that seems to control the frizz. I use a round brush and blow dry my hair.
Is anyone able to get their hair straight but curl the ends up or flip them?

I use a round brush and blow dry my hair.
Is anyone able to get their hair straight but curl the ends up or flip them?
Once you blow dry it straight, try using a large barrel curling iron and curling large pieces in a spiral. Once you let them cool and run your fingers through them...tada... Now if you want flipped out ends, use a curling iron the opposite direction, curling outward instead of inward. Make sense?
I have shoulder length curls (textured much like your's Gina), but the *only* way my hair gets straightened is when I pay someone to do it for me. I have a THICK head of hair, blowdrying alone takes a minimum of 30 mins and then I'd still need about another 30-40 to flat-iron and style. On the very rare ocassions when I do straighten myself, I do it in two days - day one: wash and blow dry, then sleep on it; day two: I flat iron and shine. Otherwise, it's just too darn puffy and fly-away.

I use all Aveda products right now. For the past 10 years I have straightened my hair "permanently" using perm solution. I recently decided that I would stop doing that and let my hair get curly again, and most of the curl is back. I have to wash my hair every day, so I have not been using anything with heat other than a blowdryer because I am afraid of damage. I am able to get my hair pretty straight with a lot of body (not stick straight like Gina's) just by using gel, a round brush and a hair dryer.

I also have really curly hair but it is very soft. I am blessed with a white mom with curly hair and a black dad with soft straight hair, lol. I use all Aveda products (Sapp moss and color preserve shampoo and conditioner along with sprays and serums oha nd hang straight for blow drying)and the chi iron. The chi to me is a life saver because sometimes I have a little frizz on the bottom it gets it right out.
Guilty of straightening my hair almost daily since 1990!
I switch shampoo and conditioners about every 6 months or so, but my faves are Bumble & Bumble and Fructis. After washing my hair, I use a drop or two of B&B Defrizz and blowdry. Then, I spritz on B&B Styling Lotion to protect and use my beloved Chi to straighten. Although the B&B products can be pricey, they are so worth it - my hairdresser has even commented on how healthy my hair is even with all of the straightening.
PS - on a rainy day like this (in the Northeast), nothing will work - hence the ponytail. :)
I have curly hair a couple inches past my shoulders, and I wear it straight about 75% of the time. When I straighten it, I wear it that way for two days before washing it again. I switch shampoo and conditioner a lot -- right now it's Infusium for both. A couple times a week I use Terex Crema for deeper conditioning. After washing, I wrap it in one of those super-absorbant towels for about 15 minutes, then I comb it out, blow dry until just damp, then clip up sections and straighten with the biggest round bristle brush on the market. I used to use product in my hair prior to straightening -- I tried everything under the sun, including Phytodefrisant (sp?), KMS Flat Out, and some Bed Head stuff. Then I started using product only after straightening. I was using some Physique stuff, and I just started using Zero Frizz. I have found some products I hated, but none that I loved so much that I was willing to give up the pursuit for the *perfect* product. I always flip the ends a little (my hair kind of does that naturally anyway), and I don't even own a flat iron. My hair damages easily, and I am afraid the flat iron would just be too much for it.
Any body have any great suggestions for products to use when wearing hair natural? I find good curl products to be a lot harder to find than good straightening products.

I have newly curly hair, I always had waves and frizz but since my hair's grown back post chemo it's very curly. My hair is just past my shoulders. I leave it curly most days and I straighten if I have somewhere to go. I'm very low maintenance and have found a lot of products make my hair feel heavy and yucky.
I've yet to find a shampoo/conditioner combo that I like, I usually use pantene but right now I'm using frizzease. I like the frizzease conditioner but i think the shampoo dries out my hair more than the pantene. After my shower while my hair is still wet I put in frizzease serum. If I'm going to straighten I put in just a touch of pantene body builder gel. Then I let my hair dry on it's own for a little bit if I have time. Otherwise I pre-blowdry it so that it's about 80% dry. Then I blowdry it straight using a large round barrel brush. Then I straighten it using a ceramic straightening iron, just a cheap one, the salon iron is on my Christmas list. My hair sort of flips on it's own but I have to try to fight that because one side flips out and the other side flips in. Then I use Short Cuts "flip out" pommade. I work it in with my fingers and smooth it on the surface. It helps it hold the style, stops flyaways, adds shine, and most importantly - keeps frizz at bay even in humidity.
I'm looking for a product that I can use on my curly days. Usually I just put in the frizzease serum and leave it as is. But now that my hair is getting a little longer, I'd like somthing to define them better. I've tried loreal springing curls before but now that my hair is different maybe I'll try it again (it's still in my bathroom cupboard).

My hair is naturally wavy/curly. Most days I end up braiding it or pulling it back in a ponytail b/c straightening it takes too long and it doesn't curl nicely if I just leave it alone.
So what would you recommend for enhancing my natural curls?

I like got2b curl shimmer gel - it's apple green and in a curvy bottle. You should be able to find it for pretty cheap ($5) at a drugstore. I just scrunch a little bit in my hair after I very lightly towel-dry it, and I'm good to go for the day. I just let it air dry. Easy! It makes my hair shiny and cuts the frizzies, leaving waves and curls to look great!

if I want my hair down I use the curl line from Catwalk (TIGI) which can be found at beauty stores/salons.....but I did notice at Target this weekend they carry TIGI Bed Head stuff, just not the curl line.
Or, if you don't want salon items you can use regular mousse which I use as well.
But lately, it has been too hot and I am too lazy to wear it down, so I put in a pony tail without any product.

Here is my process..
First I use Frizz-ease by John Frieda. It's in a deodorant looking bottle and I make sure to work it through my hair.
Second, I use this blue stuff called "split personality". It's like a gel that "calms" the curls.
THird, I use Jele Gloss by Rusk. I "twist" this into my hair...to pull the curl down.
Finally, I use a cheap spray gel to set it. I do not blow down because then I get a big afro and that's not the look I am going for. It takes a while to dry but the curls loosen and look nice and separated.
Good luck!

I swear by Aveda Be Curly. It's not cheap ($16) but it's the only product that leaves my hair looking product-free. I've tried a million things over the years and for now I'm sticking with this.

thanks everyone for the tips! I'm trying out a Frizz Ease product today b/c it was cheap. I don't mind spending the money if something works but I probably could have paid for college with all the money I've spent on products that didn't work. Its humid today so it probably wasn't the best day to try anything out.

I too am a curly girl, but I hesitate to recommend products to you without knowing how curly your hair is, or what type of curls you have. I'd recommend you check out this message board on the website NaturallyCurly website (http://naturallycurly2.com/phpBB/)
Over the past few years I've learned so much about my hair there.
I do what is called a modified CG plan. CG stands for "Curly Girl" which is a book by Lorainne Massey. Link to the book (http://198.63.60.51/devachan/devacurl/aboutcurly.html)
This book will help you learn about curly hair and how to care for it. It also recommends products, including things you can make yourself.
Feel free to post or PM me with any questions.

I actually have that book somewhere, I suppose it would help if I found it and read it. :p
My hair is not as curly as yours. If I just let it dry naturally it is really wavy but if I shake it out and scrunch it that brings out the curls. I'm looking for something to help enhance/define the curls and control frizz.
The frizz ease products I used today did help but it was really humid so not really the best day to test new products.

I swear by Sebastian Potion 9 for my curls. I comb my hair with conditioner in the shower, towel-dry, add the Potion 9 and scrunch it and let it dry naturally.
My curls are similar to berry's, so I'm not sure how this works on less-curly hair. You can get a small tube for about $7 to try it.

A drugstore product that I like really well is Citre Shine Making Waves Curl Booster. It gives your natural curl a bit more curl to it. It is a thick gel, sometimes I use it mixed with another gel that is lighterweight.
I don't have recommendations on any curling cremes, but I know they work really well for girls with more wavy/curly hair. For me, they don't do a thing.
I know what it is like trying a zillion products, that is why I recommended Natually Curly. If you can figure out your basic curl type, then you can find what others with your curl type recommend.
I recently bought 3 new gels that were recommended by other girls with my curl type, and I love all of them! (I am a product junkie, but at least on CG plan I only really buy conditioner and gel.)

Every time I see a thread like this, I always recommend this book:
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/0761123008.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
It was recommended to me by Bre, – who used to post on the other site (and now posts on LJ.)
Before Curly Girl, I didn't even know I had curly/wavy hair. I'd had straight hair all my life, then cut it short for about a decade. During that time, I had two kids and the texture of my hair changed. Every time I'd let it grow out of the short cut, I could not figure out why it would not lie down and behave. I can't tell you what a difference this book has made. It took me from this (http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b4d627b3127cce9b2c824334ea00000015108AbtGTlyzZte ) (painstakingly straightend with round brush and hairdryer and STILL looking frizzy) to this (http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b4d627b3127cce9b2c8240b5d900000026108AbtGTlyzZte ) (Dried naturally with Curly Girl method.)
This author does not pretend that hair maintenance is serious science; it is a fun little book that does not take itself too seriously. She does not recommended products, but ingredients – ones to look for and ones to stay away from. As it happens, the products with the right ingredients are typically cheaper. I get great results with Suave. She also recommends ways to style; I pull the roots of my hair up in claw clips and let it dry naturally.
Probably the most remarkable advice in the book is not to use shampoo. At all. I now use conditioner to cleanse my hair, and it hasn't looked better in years. My hair is not stinky, icky or greasy. Conditioner is just like shampoo, only without the detergent. Use it the right way, and your scalp will be clean. She also gives recipes for using natural things like lemon juice or lavender for weekly deep cleanings, but I rarely do this.
Check out the reviews (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/customer-reviews/0761123008/ref=cm_cr_dp_2_1/002-4198319-5247250?%5Fencoding=UTF8&customer-reviews.sort%5Fby=-SubmissionDate&n=283155) on amazon.com for more information. There are 105 at this point - all (or most) of them positive.

thanks for the tips! Its insanely humid today so I didn't even try to do anything with my hair - its in a ponytail. I'm going to check out that website and read the book.
Before Curly Girl, I didn't even know I had curly/wavy hair.
I was like that for a while too. My hair was never stick straight but it used to just have some body to it. Then I had a head injury and part of my head was shaved. It grew back curlier and the rest of my hair changed over time but I didn't really notice it til a hair stylist asked if I minded if she styled my hair curly instead of blowing drying it straight after the hair cut. Wow, I had a lot of curls that day. :) If only I knew what product she used!

You might want to see if there is a stylist in your area who specializes in curly hair -- preferably trained to do a "carving and slicing" technique (such as Ouidad (http://www.ouidad.com/salon_locator/idx_salon.asp) certified stylists). I go to a salon that has people trained special for curly hair, and the haircut really makes a difference for me. Plus they showed me how to use products in my hair and how to dry it. Otherwise, right now I'm using the Curlisto Structura lotion on my hair.

My hair is very curly, but the curls are deceptive b/c my hair is also very fine. I have used a LOT of products, but I currently use Bumble & Bumble products. Lately I've switched to just using the anti-frizz gel on a tip from my stylist, but an older stylist recommended the styling creme mixed w/ the anti-frizz. Both work, but the creme is pretty heavy in my hair - especially since I don't live in a humid climate. Before any product or even combing out my hair, I use Herbal Essence leave-in conditioner.
I used to have a great spray product by KPAX, I think (?), but I can hardly ever find it lately. It's $$, but it works great, and I really prefer spraying to gels/cremes.
FWIW, I go to an Aveda salon, but she said my hair is too fine for their "Be Curly" product.

Hello CC members -
i have curly hair and its about waist length. i have a lot of hair that frizzes entirely. i need a cut barely but i cant seem to find many hair stylists in the bay area that specialize in curly hair.
i found a guy in canada (toronto) named Jonathan Torch and might go there and pay a visit to my sis since she's out there for school.
in the meantime, what do you recommend? *i normally keep my hair in a braid, because its too frizzy*

I have curly hair - I find that if I let it get too long it gets really frizzy and I end up wearing it back a lot. It is just below my shoulders, with some long layers in it to keep from getting a triangle head. :)
I use TIGI Bedhead Moisture Maniac shampoo and conditioner. I don't shampoo every day because it dries my hair out and makes it frizzier. I do use conditioner every day. Also I use a wide-mouthed comb in the shower about 2-3 times a week while the conditioner is in my hair, and that is all I do in terms of brushing - again, any more than that and I get frizz. I let my hair air dry and don't use a hair dryer or curling iron. I have found that doing all of the above keeps my curls defined and really limits the frizz.
For styling I use TIGI Catwalk Curls Rock Curl Amplifier - that is the best thing I have found for curls.

products ive tried: mousse, gel, hair spray no good. i did the ouidad products too and that did not work on my hair. i want to get rid of the bulk and i have read the massey book in that my hair goes east to west and not north to south like it should.
i think i would want my hair at my shoulder blades or mid back but not longer. i am thinking of getting this product http://www.frizzoff.com/img/product_dt.jpg since knots form very easy in us curly heads and i hate that my hair dries so damm quick! just the thing with curls as well as having fine hair but people think that its thick when in reality its not.

I use to have shoulder length layered hair which was okay, but I was frustrated I couldn't pull it up without shorter pieces falling down. So now it is long and almost one length but has no movement always in the face. With upcoming interviews I want to go for a more "professional" clean look while maintaining some of the length. Any ideas? I was thinking of getting a straight edge cut, maybe just below the shoulder and go for a long bang on top.
Something like this....

I could still pull it back like this..

In those pictures, Reese has layers so I don't think the "straight edge" cut is what you are looking for. Maybe short layers are more what you are thinking. I love the cut though in those pictures. I wish I had wavy hair because there are so many things you can do with it! Good luck!

I have very thick wavy-to-curly hair. I have to wear layers in it. If it's long without layers it just hangs. If it's short without layers I get the dreaded wedge. :shudder: Reese's hair is layered in both of those photos. I think it's a cute haircut that would work with your hair type.

The problem with Reese's hair is that she doesn't have thick hair. I always used to look for her hair as an example, but my stylist told me that her hair is quite thin and she layers it for thickness.

I have very very thick hair that is wavy. I'm growing it out now for my wedding so it's pretty long which I find is almost easier in some ways because it is less poofy from the weight of it. When it is shorter than shoulder length I make sure to get alot of layers.

You're right she does have thin hair so mine would definitely have more volume. As much as I wish my hair could look good long and all one length it doesn't work, like someone said it weights the hair down. I heard long layers are in and seem to work best so I think I'll go with that and keep the length around the shoulders. Something like this http://www.ukhairdressers.com/style/index2.asp?R1=6429&month1=99&pg=1&styl1=Lisa%20Edwards
Thanks everyone! :)

If you're looking to loose some weight/thickness, you can ask your stylist to razor cut to thin it out. I do this three or four times a year, and it makes a huge difference.
Good luck, I hope you enjoy the new 'do. :)
I have very thick wavy-to-curly hair. I have to wear layers in it. If it's long without layers it just hangs. If it's short without layers I get the dreaded wedge. :shudder: Reese's hair is layered in both of those photos. I think it's a cute haircut that would work with your hair type. This sounds like me too. Every couple of years, I cut it short hoping that I'll have some cute, adorable (think Meg Ryan or Mandy Moore) little, layered do.
Sadly, it never works out the way I hope. I look cute enough when I leave the salon, but I just can't seem to get it to listen. My hair knows how to do two things: straight with a bit of a flip (half flip up, half flip under) or go curly. So I just go with that - and it's just so much easier to let it go curly. I save straight for special occassions.
Good luck with your hair - sorry I couldn't help...

I am in need of referrals... I had wavy/curly hair pretty since I was a teenager. However, when I got pregnant with DD, my hair went stick straight. With this second pregnancy, the waves are back and I need to know what you love for your curly or wavy hair.
Back in the day, I used Paul Mitchell mousse and gel with fairly good success, but want to try something new.
Currently I am using Curls Rock by Tigi and like it, but my hair looks wet, despite diffusing it... Any other suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

Hi there! I have very curly hair and have tried tons of products. One thing I will say is that the products that work for one of us curlys might not work for another, so, that said,
Here are store products I currently use:
TRESemme Bouncing Curls Defining Gel
Aura hypoallergenic Gel (sold at Sally's)
also, for less hold/softer look:
Suave Professionals Healthy Curls Schruncing Mouse
But the products I really love are by DevaCurl:
Devacurl Producs (http://www.devachansalon.com/devachan/devacurl/onlinestore.html)
I use their no poo (instead of shampoo)
One Condition
and they have a great gel called Angell
For lots of info on naturally curly hair and products & tons of great styling tips, check out:
Naturallycurly.com (http://naturallycurly.com)
and
Naturally Curly Message Boards (http://naturallycurly2.com/phpBB/)
Also, try to use as little shampoo as possible as it really dries out curls and prevents them from looking their best!
I tried going 'poo free and just didn't have much success with it. Although I had much better curls, my head was always itchy and seemed to get oily-looking quite quickly.
Currently, I'm lovin' Redken's Ringlet 07 (http://www.redken.com/products/index.cfm?action=showproduct&p=670&bt=2&b=269) - it has a nice softish, medium, finger friendly hold with no stickies!

I got a haircut and while it went well, it still did not remove the bulk that I wanted too. I got it into layers and have let it grown out. I read how girls want volume and I do not. I need to buy products as I am running out, what are some leave in conditioners that people use?

Hi there! I use Devacurl's One Condition and I leave it in. Not sure if you know, but you can use almost any conditioner as a leave in. Usually I rinse it out a bit from my scalp and leave the rest in. Devacurl also has a leave-in that is fairly new, called B'Leave-in. Here is the link: B'Leave-in link (http://www.devachansalon.com/devachan/devacurl/3822956.html)
Not sure if you've had a chance to read Curly Girl by Lorainne Masey, but check it out. As Katy said, the program doesn't work for everyone, but it does work for a lot of women.
And, if you are looking for more product recommendations, head over to naturallycurly.com and check out the message boards. You can read product reviews and even find products by your hair type. Hope this helps!

Do any of those 'wash 'n curl' type shampoos work to enhance curls? I have curls sporadically, but always have waves, and I was wondering if those work to enhance.
I can get my hair to curl really well, using the right combo of products/temperature/humidity, but it seems like it's a shot in the dark if all the forces are aligned

I have curly hair, and 'volume' for me = frizz, so I try to steer clear entirely. My hair is also deceptively thin (the curl makes it seem thick, but it's not) so I can't use any heavy products, which a lot of curly products are. In any case, I just picked up this leave-in conditioner over the weekend and it works pretty well so far*:
Styling Curessence Spray Detangler from Aveda
http://a248.e.akamai.net/www.aveda.com/images/products2/large/av_A1RJ_162.jpg
Our pre-styling tool for damp hair. It detangles and leaves hair combable. A formula—with MorikueTM protein—that helps fortify, condition and protect hair.
* For all hair types
*but I've only used it twice, and I live in a low humidity climate. The real test will be this weekend when I visit my family is super-humid Illinois. Today I used just the spray, combed out my hair, scrunched it and put on a tiny little bit of hairspray to set flyaways, and it worked reasonably well for non-frizz, low volume hair.
My stylist recommended this product, also by Aveda:
Brilliant Damage Control
http://a248.e.akamai.net/www.aveda.com/images/products2/large/av_A1KC_162.jpg
The foundation for any hair style, use this spray as a pre-styling tool to protect your hair from the hazards of combing, heat styling, and sun damage.
• For all hair types
• Protects against thermal damage
• Reduces breakage from combing
• Helps protect against UV damage
And I was using it, but it makes my hair more 'sticky' like product vs. what I actually wanted, which was leave-in conditioner. It would probably be good if I used a blowdryer since it protects hair against thermal damage, but I don't.
I have personally given up on 'curling' shampoos; I use a shampoo that is 'color save' instead.

I have curly hair. The one thing I've really learned about curly hair is that having the right cut is everything. There are a wide variety of products that people love, and everyone needs something different based on their hair type, but if your cut isn't good, your hair looks bad.
I straighten mine somewhat frequently, and I have a ton of hair and it's really thick. I have a layered cut with the pieces cut shorter towards my face and it's thinned out. This would probably give some people the mega frizzies, but it works for my hair. It is about as curly as the girl on the front of the CG book on any given day.
I shampoo every 4 days or so. I brush my hair in the shower when I put the conditioner in. Much less breakage this way. When I get out of the shower, I towel dry it a bit (just wrap the towel around my head and gently squeeze the water out). When I can't squeeze water out anymore, I apply Chi Silk Infusion. I comb that through, then apply TIGI Curls Rock Curl Amplifier (2 pumps). I scrunch with that, then dry my hair with a diffuser.
I know a lot of people say to let it air dry, but my hair is seriously thick and it will take 2 hours to dry. I refuse to go to work with wet hair, so that just doesn't work for me. The diffuser works well for me.
Hope that helps someone!

I've used them with minimal success. I know it seems silly for me, since I'm super-curly anyway, but in the winter I have issues with portions of my hair laying flat due to lack of humidity. Truly, I can't say that I see a ton of difference with the shampoos, but, for someone with waves as opposed to curls, I would imagine it would be worth a shot.
Suave has a curl-enhancing shampoo now, for around $2. It's a knock-off of the Matrix brand, IIRC.

I had never seen this thread before.
I've been doing the CG "no shampoo" thing for about a year. It definitely keeps my hair from being as frizzy as before.
Recently I started to try out some Garnier Fructis products, and I LOVE them. And the best part is that they are quite cheap (about $3 each) and I often find $1 off coupons for their styling products. I use the "Soft Curl Cream" and the "Curl Shaping Spray Gel". The first works best on towel-dried hair that is left to dry naturally. The spray is good that way, or also to "rejuvinate" curls that have started to frizz out during the day. I also really like the apple scent that these products have.

Berry - Thank You. Yes I am aware that I can use any type of conditioner as a leave in. I have read both curl books (Ouidad's and Massey's) and have used both of their techniques and it just did not work for my hair. All curly girls have fine hair but the amount of hair we have varies: I have a lot of hair but the texture is fine just like a baby. I've tried different product lines and still have not found the right combination for my hair. I agree with hokulea that the cut is the important thing. I"ll venture out to naturallycurly again and see what products are hot by the members and see if the right combo will work.

Cool, thanks, I figured it's worth a shot for a few dollars. :) While the body of my hair curls really well, I have problems getting a similar texture at the scalp.
Right now, I scrunch with a towel and then apply some mousse and let dry some more. I finish with this hairspray (http://www.thermafuse.com/uphold.htm) which is like glue :o but it holds really well all day.

Seb's Kitty I saw your post about wanting to add more curl. My hair is very curly, but I still have one little spot that is less curly than the others.
I know this gel worked well for me (and does seem to make my hair curlier -- if that is possible!) is Citre Shine Making Waves Curl Booster. It is at the drugstore.
cubbear Sounds like your hair is much more fine than mine. I wonder if some type of curl creme would work for you. I recommended Bumble & Bumble's Curl Creme before to a friend with fine curly hair. Have you checked out that one? Or what about a mouse, because those are much lighter.
The other thing I just thought of, is I have to make sure my hair has that wet seaweed feel before I style it. (Meaning it has to be coated with conditioner or leave in). If my wet hair has a lot of frizzies, than it will only have more when it is dry.
I also know that for me, my frizzies are related to the 1) condition of my hair and 2) to the humidity. The humidity frizzies I don't worry about that much (can't fix those). If I deep condition my hair regularly (1x a month in the summer and weekly or bimonthly in the winter), then I have less frizzies.
I know how hard it is to find the right combo for the curly hair! I hope you'll post when you find something that works for you.

Include me as another curly girl. I don't follow the CG routine but I did find some great products on NaturallyCurly.com My favorite of all these is Re:Coil. This stuff gives me lots of curls. It is rather expensive but it is so worth it. Another product that I have found that works to enhance the curl is Curls Spiral Curl Creme. I am not a big fan of the smell of this one but if I layer it with a gel it is much better.
I went for a Ouidad cut a while back and I have to say, it really didn't do much for me. It was kind of a learning experience though since the stylist said she would not really calssify me as a curly but more of a wavey which is so the oppostie of what I would say. I know some people swear by the Ouidad cut but I didn't really notice a difference - good or bad.

Just to update - I think the Wash 'n Curl (http://www.washncurl.com/index.html) shampoo worked (either that or my tempermental hair decided to give me a break that day :p) It doesn't smell so great, and stings horribly, but it seems like it evened out the texture of my waves. They haven't lasted longer than usual, but I didn't have to apply tons of product to get them to stay, either.
Instead of washing with their product twice, I washed quick with my regular shampoo and then let their stuff sit for about 5-7 mins. Then I quick conditioned and did my usual routine. It's definitely worth a try if you need any help enhancing what you have.

cubbear I hear you on the mousse. That does nothing for me as well. I end up with way too much volume and not enough control.
Let us know how the creme works for you.
dollface Cool to hear about the Ouidad products, have you used them on shoots before?
I was really committed to their salon and product line for over 2 years, but I found that for me the Devacurl products work much better for my hair type.
Also, I must confess that I love that I only have to use 2-3 products with using the Curly Girl technique (or whatever you want to call it). But with Ouidad I was always using 5-6 products to get the same look to my hair.
I love love love the Ouidad deep treatment. It is by far one of the best deep treatments on the market for curly hair.
Does anyone else here currently use the Ouidad products or have experience with them?
maximus I've been thinking about trying that Re: Coil. The girls on naturallycurly.com seem to rave about it. What do you feel it does for your hair? Also, where do you order it from?

berry - Definitely report back how the creme works on my hair (I think I need a cut first but definitely will try it). I used the Ouidad products before and I agree that she does have the best deep treatment out there. When I went to NY 2 years ago I went to the salon to get a cut and I was not that impressed with it. I still had lots of bulk which I wanted less of. I would like to use less products and with Ouidad there are a bunch of products that I would need to use to get somewhat close of what I would want. One day, I'll have to dry my hair without any products in it and then take pictures and post and maybe get a better idea of what products to use.

I have extremely curly, coarse, long hair - it has a mind of its own. Lately, I've been using a combo (http://aveda.aveda.com/enter/style/runwayspring06/hair_wave.asp?COL=RunwaySpring06) of Aveda products. Mix together Be CurlyTM Curl Enhancer and ConfixorTM Liquid Gel and distribute throughout my hair. Let air dry. I've been happy with the results - although I don't always get the right quanities, so it definitely an experiment in the making still. The stylist has been finger curling my hair before airdrying and I'm finding that a little too heavy of a look for me, so I tend to just do a couple of curls and let the rest dry naturally.
Here it is fingercurled with the above product + BrilliantTM Humectant Pomade .

Since Ouidad products can get pretty pricey I have tried L'oreal Natures Therapy (http://www.peninsulabeauty.com/shop/details.html?id=3859) for a deep conditioning and I like the results. I also just trimmed my hair so that it grows in one length since i got tired of the layers.

I just got my hair cut at Devachan today and I'm really happy with the cut. I'll have to take a picture and post soon.
I'm still using the Devachan No Poo to cleanse/wash my hair. For conditioner I'm using the Dove Intense Moisture Treatment or V05 Peach Conditioner or the Devachan One Condition.
For styling products, I'm still doing the gel thing. I have noticed as it has gotten cooler, my hair has lost some of its curl craziness. Just a slight change and the humidity has left the air here.
for Gel's I'm using
TRESemme Bouncing Curls Defining Gel
Aura hypoallergenic Gel (sold at Sally's)
and to bump up my curls a bit, I'm using the Citre Shine Making Waves Curl Booster.

I am looking for a hair product that I used to use and that I want to recommend to my sister. Sadly, though, I can't remember the name.
I used it a couple of years ago. It was in a clear/white bottle with red lettering and a red top. I had to buy it at the salon (that I no longer go to, so I can't check there). It was like a curl-revver-upper. I would put it in my towel-dried hair and it would help it retain its curl without getting hard or crunchy.
Does anyone use this or know what I'm talking about? Thanks!

My hair isn't thick, but it's wavy and can be frizzy. I really like John Frieda Frizz Ease (http://www.johnfrieda.com/products/products_main.asp?section=products&subSection=frizzEase&lineID=4). I'd also highly recommend the CHI flat iron (http://www.folica.com/CHI_Pink_Flat_I_d2288.html). Folica has a great deal going now - $99.95 + free S&H. I've been washing my hair at night, blow drying, letting it set as its wavy, frizzy self and then flat ironing it with the CHI. I sleep on it at night and it stays straight and non-frizzy so that I barely have to do anything to it in the morning.

I had my hair thermal reconditioned (Japanese Straightened) almost 4 years ago. I liked it for the first 2 years, until my hair started falling out. I went to the doctor and ruled out any medical reasons, and this was the only reason left. My hair became very dry and brittle. So I decided to grow the straightener out, and two very frustrating years later, my hair is almost back to normal. I have long hair, and refused to chop it all off.
I love my curly hair now! I have tried the Curly Girl method, and it didn't work for my hair, but I am definitely more conscious about what I use on my hair. I use no to few sulfates, and very few silicones. Lately, I have been loving AG Re:Coil with DevaCurl Set it Free Spray, and (amazingly enough) Garnier Fructis Soft Curl Cream. I think this stuff is amazing and never fails me! Although it does have some silicone in it.
For straight days, I use my Sedu flat iron. It is unbelievable!! Best flat iron I have ever used. :)

jarm, Aw! :( Don't hate your hair! Curly hair is beautiful!! :) I do understand what you mean though. For close to 13 years I have chemically straightened (with relaxers) my hair (I have very thick curly hair), and I finally decided in Aug of 2005 that I wasn't going to straighten my hair anymore. In Jan of 2006 I chopped all my straight, damaged hair off, and have been dealing with my curly hair ever since. It's been tough especially since I hadn't dealt with my curly hair in a LONG time, but I have found that with some patience and the right products, my hair is now healthier than it's ever been. I am so glad that I stopped straightening my hair b/c it did so much damage to it.
Anyway, what products are you using? I have stopped using products (shampoos) with SLS (eta: and other drying ingredients) in them b/c they dry my hair out. I also started using Aubrey Organic and Elucence products and my hair has done a tremendous turn around. Not trying to promote those products or anything, just trying to say that you may be using products that are drying your hair out rather than keeping the moisture in. But anyway, you are not alone!! HTH! :)

Hey CC'ers...quick hairstyle question for you.....I have wavy and course hair and am in desperate need of a new style, but don't know where to go to check out some great and cute photos to take to the salon with me.
Any suggestions?!
Just a side note...I went to a party over the weekend and was so disappointed to see myself in the photos (for all kinds of reasons, but I digress) not the least of which was my hair! As stupid as it is, I think I leave the house with it looking straight and styled really well, and it turns out that is not the case at all! Super wavy and messy looking in the pix; I am not happy and really looking for a style that will hold the waves without looking sloppy.
Did that make sense?

My hair is wavy. I just got it cut in layers to bring out the curl for the summer. My goal is wash, put stuff in it, and go (no blowdrying, etc). I'm looking for good products that won't weigh it down (it's very fine) or dry it out, but WILL enhance the curl and help it stay without being "crispy."
I'm currently using John Frieda "Dream Curls" spray after I wash and condition, but I'm not thrilled. It's fine in that it's light and has no alcohol, but the curls wilt pretty quick.
Any ideas?
Thanks!!
I've been using Redken Ringlet 07 for about a year now. I love it! It enhances the curls yet keeps things finger soft with no hair crunchies. I noticed this week in San Francisco and on the coast, that it works well in humid weather as well. I had some great, full curls all with air drying.
I've tried other non-crunchy products and they just don't seem to enhance the curl as well. Ringlet the keeper for me. And FWIW, I don't really notice a difference from when I use a curl shampoo/conditioner and when I don't. This week, where I've had some great curls, I was using a product for color-treated hair.

Have any of you ever been to a Ouidad certified salon (or to Ouidad's signature salon directly)? Supposedly, Ouidad is the curl expert and does a carve and slice technique that she claims works with the curls rather than against. I'd like to find out of people generally like her work or if it is not worth it.
This is for DD, btw. I have stick straight hair and don't really know how to care for curly hair or how to find a stylist who knows how to cut curly hair properly. Is it worth $35 plus tip for a 20 month old's cut if it will be cut properly and if I'll get taught how to care for her hair? Alternatively, I can go to some random kids' cuts place and pay $20 plus tip.

My sister started going to Ouidad's signature salon, and her hair looks a lot better. But she went from combing it while wet to not touching it and letting it curl, so I'm sure that also has a lot to do with it.
For your daughter, I'd pick up a copy of Curly Girl (http://www.amazon.com/Curly-Girl-Lorraine-Massey/dp/0761123008). The author's salons (Devachan) are Ouidad's competitors. I recommended this book earlier in the thread; she doesn't recommend products - only ingredients to look for and stay away from. She also demonstrates how curly-haired women can cut their own hair, so I imagine you could use that guide to cut your daughter's. The book is around $10.00, so it pays for itself!

Thanks, Suzu!!! I'm definitely gonna pick that up. I'm not brave enough to cut her hair myself, but my mom used to do hair for a living so I'll have her learn it and maybe in time I can develop the bravery. :)
I've been using some product on her hair...Silk Therapy, spray in conditioner and sometimes Be Curly. I don't really care for the Be Curly. I also have a tube of Matrixx something or another, but I really hate it. It makes her hair crunchy. If I don't use anything, I can't get a comb through it gets horrid tangles (the downside to carseats, I guess).
LML, I can't recommend the Redken stuff enough for crunch-less hair. It sucks to have to use product so young, but I guess you do what you've got to do.

I know...I wanted her to be product-free for as long as possible, but it just isn't working if I want to keep her hair looking half-way decent (and staying as pain-free as possible...tangles hurt!).
There was a chick pressuring me to put product on her hair at freaking 6 months of age. I was like, "She's a baby. She doesn't need product." But I guess toddlers are old enough. *sigh*

I'm not a curly (just a little wavy) but lml, I was wondering if you'd tried Johnson & Johnson's No More Tears detangler? My hair has always been fine but very thick and prone to knotting up easily, and it's the only way my mom was ever able to comb my hair as a child. My friend also uses it on her DD's curly hair & seems to think it works well.
FWIW, my hair is still the same texture, and CO washing every other day has really helped with the tangles & frizzies. I think the book suzubeane recommend goes into the idea of CO washing in more detail if you're interested.

lml - I went to a local salon that was Ouidad certified and had one of the carve and slice cuts. I was not impressed. Although, the stylist told me that I did not have curly hair, she told me it was wavy. I do have to work at it to get it curly but it isn't too much effort for me. The carve and slice cut left me with a lot of little wisps all over. I couldn't pull my hair into a ponytail without the wisps all over. It has been about a year since I had it done, and I don't think I would pay the extra to get it again. I have luck with Toni & Guy cutters who specialize in curly hair for a lot less money.

LML - is the issue more the tangles or the looks? If it's the tangles, I would second some kind of spray-on detangler.
Another thing you might do is detangle during bathtime. Get some inexpensive conditioner like Suave and load it up on her head while you're washing the rest of her (it's thick enough not to drip in her eyes.) Then after it's been sitting there a minute or so, detangle with a wide tooth comb and then rinse.
My niece had really curly hair as a baby and toddler, and the only solution was to keep it in a ponytail, or cut it really short. 'Course if you want it to look curly and neat for special occasions, this doesn't help much (hair that's been in a pony most of the time doesn't always want to fall into pretty cascading curls on command!) but it will probably help with the tangles.

Does anyone know of a good product to loosen the curl but not straighten? I blow my hair out sometimes, but now that I have a 6 month old baby, I would like to wear it curly sometimes (and actually have it look good!). My problem is that my curls are very uneven (almost straight in some areas and very curly in others). I would like to find a product that could make all of my hair sort of wavy, like what all the celebrities are wearing now. And ideas?

Ok, looking through this thread it seems as if most of you have curly or wavy hair - and I must say in some ways I'm jealous - I love curly hair. Of course I've never had to live with it so I'm sure it has its disadvantages, like every other hair type. :)
MY hair is straight as a board - but very, very thick. I'm hoping someone out there can recommend a good hair spray for me. I don't use it that often - but when I do, nothing seems to hold.
I usually use a pommade or gel on my hair, but now that I have bangs - I need something every once in awhil to hold my bangs in place and those products make the top of my head too oily. Any ideas?

lml, personally, I'd pay the $$ for a good haircut. I have very curly hair and DD is 3.5 and has hair similar to mine. We're growing hers out, but in the next few weeks I'm going to get her a good cut so the curls will get more shape and definition. Curly hair is a PITA is it's not cut well and I want to start DD off on the right foot!
Also I agree that you should get a copy of Curly Girl. I use this method for myself and DD and it's done wonders for both our hair! As far as products, right now I love Suave's Healthy Curls Anti Frizz Cream. It's cheap, not sticky or greasy, and really defines curls so well.
