We just lowered our six month old son's mattress to the lowest setting on our crib (from the top setting) and it seems so low - like he's sleeping on the floor. The top of the mattress is about 12" from the floor. Is that typical?
From the top of the mattress to the top of the lowest rail is about 22", which seems right, since if he were standing, he'd be 26". I guess I'll just have to get used to the new setting.

Does your crib convert to a toddler bed? My son's converts and it had three levels all sort of together, and then the lowest setting was a good bit down... that lowest setting is the one for the toddler bed setting, and sounds about as low as you mention.
We kept my son on the third level down until he climbed out of the crib at 13 months, we then put him on that toddler bed setting and so far, no more climbing...
ETA- I do remember though when we first lowered him, like you did- around 6 months and it *did* seem so low! You do get used to it though, and they just keep getting bigger, so soon it doesn't seem so low anymore.

Mine is about that low too. It has 3 settings. DS is 9mo tomorrow and we have had it on the lowest settings for about a month now.
When he would pull up with it on the middle setting I thought he might could fall out.
It is much harder to lay him down when he is sleeping, but I don't feel like we have a choice.

One thing I noticed when looking at cribs was that a lot of convertible mattresses were really low - almost to the ground - on the lowest setting. I have a feeling it makes it easier to get the baby in and out without a dropside - you lean over the top railing which hits at waist height. It also seems like it makes the crib into a more functional toddler bed.
We ended up going with a traditional drop-side crib, which supposedly converts into a toddler bed, but I think it's kind of ridiculous to have a toddler bed two feet off the ground, so we probably won't use it that way.

Ours isn't that low, but our crib has a drawer under the mattress, so it can't go too low :)
