Anyone here ever been to Dubai? I'm looking into a week-long trip there this fall and have been going through several reviews at tripadvisor.com. I'm curious what anyone here has to say about it.

I havent been, but I've been dying to ever since I read an article in Conde Nast Traveler 3 or 4 years ago. I'm so jealous.

My co-worker is actually leaving for Dubai on Friday for 2 weeks.
What would you like to know? I'll ask her before she leaves.

Where to eat (and what restaurants to avoid), if she recommends her hotel (or saw one that looked better), what activities are fun or which ones to avoid...I guess the usual stuff. I know Dubai is a shopping haven, but I'm not really interested in any shopping review.
I just started looking into this in earnest so right now I have a ton of questions, so it took restraint to narrow them down to those above :)

Don't be jealous, yet. If I do end up going, eat your heart out! :D

Ok, I showed my co-worker your post. She's gonna e-mail me the info when she has a chance and I'll cut and paste the info here when she sends it to me.

Hi again.
I spoke to my co-worker and turns out she hasn't been there since she was a little kid. So she wasn't really in a position to recommend anything right now. She left for her trip today, but she'll be able to recommend hotels, excursions, etc. when she returns. That'll be in about 2 weeks though. If you don't mind waiting, I can post when she comes back.

Quite all right. Actually, that's what I was assuming, that she'd report on these things when she returned. I figured she had never been.
Thanks for doing this.

Oh vee05, you're a dear for offering. I don't have many for now, but I'm sure I'll come up with more. Here's a start.
1. We'd like to stay in the Jumeirah Beach area, but the hotels there look a bit too pricey. Are these other areas good?
- Deira (north side of creek?)
- Bur Dubai (south side of creek?)
- Sheikh Zayed Road
- near the airport
ETA: If you think the Jumeirah Beach area is soooooo worth the extra cost, let me know.
2. Any recommended ways to buy airline tix? Tips on getting deep discounts? A mid-October flight right now on British Airways is about $1090/rt/person (yikes!).
ETA: If you think this is a steal, again let me know. If I'm being naive, I can take being told so.

I would actually call Emirates directly and see if they are having a special going on from JFK. BA's deal isnt bad either but call Emirates to make sure :)
Honestly Jumeirah is nice and the area is developing and the nice fancy smanshy malls r going there but i personally would stay in Bur-Dubai,Deira since everything else is so much more accesible from these 2 place.Even Sheikh Zayed road is beautiful actually lots of life but thats anywhere in Dubai. To me Jumeirah dies down after a bit but thats me. As a local from there id stay to where all the shopping is and the good eats are.
I wouldnt like to stay near the airport since traffic in Dubai is INSANE these days! Make sure u spend as much time during the 10-4 hours doing shopping and all since it really becomes hard to get from one place to the other coz everyones on the road.
I hope it helped.:)

My husband was there for business a year or so ago. He loved it and is dying to go back. I know he stayed at Jumeirah Beach and part of the trip involved a desert trek. Definitely sounds like a great place to visit.

Thanks, vee05! I've got an extended family-related vacation starting later this week so I'll be putting off my Dubai planning until I get back in mid-July. I'm sure by then I'll have more questions to ask.
