I am having a hard time finding a good knife set that are dishwasher safe. I want something sturdy, that won't rust. I had a $79 set that was stainless steel and they rusted in the dishwasher right away. So I just returned those and bought another set for $130 where the handle and blade are one solid peice of stainless steel and when I was taking them out of the box it said DO NOT WASH IN DISHWASHER!
Are all knived like that? I did see a set of Henckels there for sale, I just didnt like the look as much, and they cost more, but if I spend more then can I wash them in the dishwasher? Or are you supposed to wash all knives by hand?
TIA

I think you're supposed to wash all good knives by hand. I have the Henckels and I am under strict orders from my dh *never* to put them in the dishwasher.
I just googled the set I have (the Henckels Five Star series) and it says they are dishwasher safe but hand washing is recommended.

Hm...darn....I guess its kind of the same thing as washing your good silverwear and dishes by hand too. But knives are something I use everyday, so I was hoping to just throw them in the dishwasher with everything else.

We have Henckels as well, and I know that we put our steak knives in the dishwasher (the ones with the serrated(sp?) eges), but not the rest of the knives. Not sure why we do that, but I've never had a problem with rust or anything like that :)

We have Henkels and Wustoff and stick them right in the dishwasher. So far nothing has gone wrong with them. Of course, I also stick my "hand wash only" non-stick Calphalon in the dishwasher - but only on delicate.

my understanding was that the dishwasher could dull the blades.
we handwash our wusthoff since we only run the dishwasher every 2-3 days. and use our knives more often than that.

Yes, no knives in dishwasher

I thought that I read the Henckels knives were okay in the dishwasher since that's what we've been doing. It does dull the blade, but you can just sharpen that. I did have the top part of one of the bolts come off and think that it may be dishwasher related. I think I should get a new knife because of their lifetime warranty, but have been too lazy to deal with it.
Like others, your knives will probably look nicer and may work better if you hand wash, but for lazy people like myself, I still put them in the dishwasher a couple of times a week in the dishwasher.

I don't know if you're supposed to or not. I wash mine in the dishwasher and they're fine. It's been almost 5 years now.

We wash our Chicago Cutlery in the dishwasher and it has definitely messed with the wood finish and they go dull a lot more quickly. Our big Wusthoff butcher knife and the 2 santoku knives do *not* go into the dishwasher at all. But then we paid nearly $100 apiece for them, so I'm not about to put them in the dishwasher, no matter how much I hate to handwash. :)

I have the Henckels Professional Series and my serrated knife has lost a piece of the black handle....right at the very bottom.
I had bought it years ago and recently bought another Henckels knife where I read that it should NOT be put in the dishwasher. I'm assuming that is exactly what happened to mine. :o
dnagirl, After you wrote about a lifetime warranty, I googled that trying to find it. I couldn't find anything stating they cover the knife for "dumb owner" defects. :(
Do you know for a fact that they will? I sure would love to get my serrated knife handle replaced. I can't stand throwing away an $80+ knife.

We have a set of Henkels that we got as a wedding gift. They have a plastic handle and we put them in the dishwasher. They haven't rusted at all and we've been using them since August.

We've had our Henkels 4 Star professional series for at least 4 years and usually put them in the dishwasher. They don't have rust on them and they are still sharp enough to cut my finger off. :p Seriously though, they probably wear better if they are handwashed but we are just lazy. And, there is NO way the black handles will come off of ours. They are very sturdy.
We put our Henckels Four Star in the dishwasher. We have had them for almost five years with no problems. I guess maybe we shouldn't be putting them in the dishwasher, though--it never even occurred to me that I shouldn't, as I've watched my parents put their Henckels in the dishwasher for years.

My brother (pro chef) literally screams at us if a knife even gets close to the dishwasher. Rust isn't usually the issue, and I think it's more than just dulling the blade (I don't remember all that he said), since good serrated knives also shouldn't be in the dishwasher.

My knife block is next to the sink. I've made it a habit of washing the knife after I finished using it, drying it off and putting it back in the block.

I would never put my good knives in the dishwasher. At $100 apiece, it's worth the peace of mind to spend the 20 seconds it takes to wash them by hand.

Warranty - for our Wustoff I called the 800 number and got information to send it back to be replaced - after hubby had accidentally put it on a hot burner and melted part of the handle!

cutco knives are awesome -- they are also dishwasher safe. best part is they have a lifetime warranty, no questions asked. if you mail it in, they'll fix whatever's wrong with it. or just sharpen it if you want that. once my mom accidentally melted the handle on one of hers, totally her fault, and they replaced it for free.

Reading this thread made me realize just how many knives I've damaged.
Like Marie's husband, I also laid a knife blade too close to the stove top and then while cooking, melted the end of it.:(
I was rethinking any more Henckel's purchases, since it seemed the other knife manufacturers were far more lenient. I called Henckels and they said the reason my knife handle broke off was because I was putting it in the dishwasher. They said the concentrated heat and detergent against the wood is a recipe for disaster. Also, not covered. :o
I then found ALL the knives warranties on a website. They are all pretty much the same type of warranty., except Cutco will cover half the cost of the knife if from misuse or abuse. Henckels and Wusthof will not cover misuse or abus.
I guess some of us got lucky on the company's repairing them and some of us didn't. :(

not to sound like an itch_bay, but why should a manufacturer replace a product due to misuse or abuse?
