We had quite a scare this morning when we realized that DS (8mo) had pulled a button off the ottoman and it was in his mouth! We only knew because he was making a "yummy yummy" noise. Talk about choking hazard!

Anyway, I just wanted to share so you could check your buttons...

Feel free to share your stories of things you hadn't realized could be a danger.

My friend called me up this weekend. Her two year old was playing with a snowglobe, and before she could get it away from him, he had pulled the plug on the bottom of it, swallowed it, and also swallowed some of the glitter water on the inside. He seemed ok during the day, but as the night wore on got worse and worse. The plug lodged itself somewhere and he ended up having emergency surgery that night. :(

- DS figured out how to pull out (and eat) outlet plugs at 11 months
- Our livingroom is open plan, so the dining table is in it. He has pulled chairs down on top of himself.
- Had to remove stuff on the top of the china cabinet, since he would hit it and make it shake...the frames were jiggling forward so we were afraid something would fall on his head.
- Recently found out that it is extremely dangerous if a child ingests magents. Forgot that we have magnet sheets covering the heat vents on the floor - had to remove them just in case.

We had a Christmas pillow last year with buttons. I noticed one was missing and looked everywhere for it. We figured the cats had knocked it down one of the vents. Then DD started choking when we gave her baby food. After a month, we finally had a CT scan that showed it was still stuck in her esophagus. She had to be put to sleep to have it removed--it turned out fine, but could have been pretty serious with it in there so long.

We had dishes drying on a dish towel on the kitchen counter. DD was only about 12 months old. She walked over and pulled on the dish towel. All of the dishes fell including a ceramic insert to a crock pot. Luckily she was only hit on the arm as it fell. If it had hit her in the head, it would have been really serious- it dented the wood floor.

DD had a boutique handmade sweater. The cute fruit shaped ceramic buttons were not attached well at all. We caught her chewing on it thankfully. Definitely make sure that all buttons are securely attached - especially if its from a place that isn't a "baby store".

We have a big shelf next to the tub I kept a bath towel folded in half on, and all of the bathtime supplies, a radio, and my chest of 'spa' toiletries. DH began pulling at the towel at 11 months, so e had to remove it to prevent anything from falling on his head.
Same thing for restaurants with tablecloths. Huge glass bottles of water or oil at some restaurants can go flying (not to mention forks & knives!) when they quickly yank the cloth. I'm at the point that I'll ask to remove it rather than take the chance.
