View Full Version : When finger foods go undigested?

So I thought that DS had been doing great eating steamed carrot chunks...until they came out looking just like they went in. Does this mean his tummy just isn't ready and I should go back to purees? Or discontinue all together. Thoughts?

I'd love to know the answer to this question :) I fed dd steamed carrots two nights ago for dinner and yesterday I found carrots in her dirty diaper...yuck! When I feed her oatios or gerber puffs there's never anything weird in her diaper so the carrot chunks are a little confusing.

I believe they actually are broken down some, even if they still look pretty much the same. The body can pull nutrients from it without making it, say, look pureed or (pardon the expression) poop-like. My medical care books even list different kids of poops, and mention poops of solids-fed babies/kids with bits of 'uneaten-looking' food in it as normal.

My DS has this at times with his cubed carrots since he chews some more than others, but the Ped said its normal.

Not to be gross, but just think of corn and adult poop: sometimes you just can't chew it all up and break it all down so it comes out the way it went in. And we're super-skilled at chewing & digesting! ;)

I second what Kim said. Ped said that the pieces are ones he did not chew well and that it wasn't a big deal unless it was causing him pain, but to just make smaller pieces. We have had this happen with sweet potato "fries". It's definitely interesting when it happens:rolleyes:

Some stuff is just undigestible, no matter what (unsoluble fiber).

Yeah, you can usually tell some of what DD's been eating by looking at her poops  . She isn't any worse for the wear though!

YUp my ped said the same things--sometimes it just isn't digested

BB - this still happens occasionally with my 2.5 year old especially with raw veggies, corn and peas.
