This really bugs me. It just doesn't seem right.

what do you think?

Taken from a McD ad in Europe.

I don't know what to think. At first, I thought the child was BF then realized it was sesame seeds on a bun. In a way, it seems, like it perhaps normalizes breastfeeding a bit - like babies should breastfeed - or latch on to a burger bun. Yeh, I wouldnt let my baby eat anything from McD's....well, the apples are OK I suppose. I guess I don't find it too disturbing, a bit shocking, but it doesn't bother me.

I agree, Franni, that that doesn't seem right. Wow! My DD is 16 months and I have taken her to McDonald's only once, and all she had was a few fries and chicken fingers. I can't believe they'd promote it to that young of an age. It seems like here -though I certainly haven't seen TV much lately or their ads - that they're trying to go the other way and hype activity instead and not focusing on really young kids. That just seems the wrong way to go, to me.

Is it from Germany? My husband always jokes that Germans have odd senses of humor (I *know* it's generalization, but it was the 1st thing I thought of)

It is from Austria. www.mcdonalds.at

AT is the internet suffix for Austria. Having lived there for eight years, I can tell you that their sense of humor is nothing like our ours (at least not socially/publicly).

wow!! i would think that ad will certainly stir up a lot of debate. after reading Fast Food Nation and watching Super Size me, i am pretty repulsed by McDonald's. To have them equate their food to being on the same level as breast milk, or even trying to promote it at such a young age, disturbs me. However, i am sure not many people will see it in a negative way since this country seems to be all about fast food.

I find it disturbing to have them equate their unhealthy food with BF. I can't imagine what else they would be trying to say?

Yeah, I think it's kind of gross that they would even suggest that their food is as healthy as the breast, but since it's from another country, we don't really know the full context of the ad.

Ugh. Can't say I'm surprised, it is McD's after all, but come on! I'm repulsed that they would either:
1) Try to promote their product by showing it in the same manner (and therefore being of the same or similar quality) as BFing OR
2) Try to make fun of BFing so that it's a 'joke' and their product appears more 'cool' (how very middle school-esque  )

Either way, I haven't stepped foot in a McD's since Supersize me/Fast Food nation, so their marketing is lost on me, but it's a lame concept all the same.

i agree. i'm totally anti-fast food for kids, but i can't really say this upsets me, b/c as an american i just don't get what the ad is saying.

heck, looks like someone photoshopped out a boob and put in a bun

How's that baby supposed to eat a big mac anyways with no teeth?

I live in Austria, and that ad is way old... at least a few years I would say.

When I first saw it, I just thought "cute baby".

Please don't think that Austrians feed McD to infants :p

This one I find a lot weirder:

Having traveled in Europe many times, I can say that TV there is very different than in the US (as well as print ads) and I would hate to try to guess what it's implying...plus, I generally don't find ads offensive...if I don't like it, I don't have to watch/look at it.

My first thought was wondering when McD's started using sesame seed buns. I thought they had plain buns. Not that I ever eat there anyway.
