We just recently bought a house with wood floors and a wood staircase. We move in a week. Here is a pic

Anyway, it is hard to get a gate into the staircase because of the bottom molding on the wall and the railing on the wall as well as the way the staicase end railing is made.
Anyone been is this similar situation? I would like to order a gate from one step ahead as they have free shipping right now, but want to see if anyone has any reccomendations or has a similar set-up.
Thanks!

If you do a search in this forum, I posted a few weeks ago how we made our own adapter kit (similar to kidco's) to attach a gate to our banisters (we have them on both sides) without drilling at the top of our stairs. At the bottom of our stairs we have the retractable lascal kiddy guard gate with the banister attachments on both sides.

Thanks. We don't have that same problem with the banister and I don't mind drilling holes in the wall, I think I just need a gate narrow enough to fit and long enough. I have tried regular gates but have to put them high enough that DS could crawl under if he really wanted to. I think I really need one that has flexibility in it's attachments for different widths due to the wood moldings.. But I will take a look at the size of the one you used, maybe it will work :).

Does anyone have this one? Does it allow the "locking wheels" on eachof the 4 sides to be tightened to different widths?

I can't find it now, but there is an L-shaped gate out there. One step ahead, maybe? The short part of the L would go against the post on the railing, and the long part would block of the stairs and attach to the wall at the end of the railing on the wall. Make sense? It's hard to describe.

emschwar Oh, that may work really well. Any ideas on where to find it? I didn't see anything like that at one step ahead.

We had a similar problem with wood moldings and DH screwed a wood block to the wall to make the wall pop out as far as the bottom. On the banister side we used cable ties to attach a wood strip to the newel post to make up the difference.
