Did everyone's DC first say "Mama" or "Dada"? Did anyone's DC say an unusual or extra funny word first? My DH's friends said "Vovo" for Volvo, since that was his family's car! To this day, the guy is into cars. :D
Would love to hear your stories!

"Bubble". In fact, I used "bubbles" as a 'theme' for his first birthday party, in honor of his first word. :)

Wow, Marisa! I really thought "bubble" was unique! :D That was my DD's first "real" word after mama and dada. But she said it after her first birthday; don't remember exactly when, so I couldn't use it as a theme for her birthday! Guess great (toddler) minds think alike. I think it's because as soon as it started to get nice, we were out almost every day doing bubbles!

My son's first word was light. He would practically strain his neck to see all the lights wherever we went after that, yelling "ight!" "ight!". ;): He was about 11 months and had only said dada prior to that, but not in context.

Nah, just the regular Mamma and then Dadda, followed by Hi.

DS#1: ball
DS#2: hi
neither one of them said mama or dada in context prior to this.

My DD is a bit strange... she said "hat" clear as day twice (in context) at about 8 months, but didn't say it again until about 12 months. She still only says 2 words regularly: hat and cat (both are "at"). She also says "mama," and I'm pretty sure that means me at this point. She has also said a number of words one time and then not again since.

I am not sure, I think it was "boo", for balloon. Followed quickly by "baa" for ball and bottle, which was all rather confusing. But I have friends who daughter first word was touch down. She spent the day watching the superbowl with her parents and that that night or the next morning she was in her crib, threw her hands over her head and said "Ta dow!"

Too cute - DH has been trying to teach this to DD for a while now....

DD has also done this. Like your DS#1, another word she now says is "ball," which really was her first word - in context - I think, but she said it once and then not for months, then said "bubble" and now says "ball" regularly as well. Funny.

first word, not in context was "mama"
first word in context was "bye bye" (sounds more like "buh buh") while waving followed by "mama" while pointing at me and "ba" for balloon. Sometimes she says something that sounds like "hi" but since it's such a short word it's hard to tell.

DD's first word was HI! clear as day when she was around 7 mos. she does it while waving and said it for weeks all the time - in the mornings when i went to get her out of her crib, i would be greeted by HI! then when we are driving and i stop the car and turn off the ignition (so she nows i am coming around back to take her out of the car seat) she starts saying it as soon as the car is turned off. the other day i was trying to get her to take a nap and was listening to her cry on the monitor. then all of the sudden she started saying hi and giggling - turns out the cat got into her room. then of course she said Hi Daddy! one night when he got home from work  she isn't saying hi so much lately but now says Daddy and Papa whenever she sees them. still waiting for her to say Mama!! i think it may be a while b/c none of her babbles even make the M sound.. :(

First word was dada. Right now (at just over a year), DS's three words are:
Dada
Mama
Baby

he had no idea what it was, but he said "dog poop".... yes, I have to write "dog poop" in the baby book. DH had it on his shoe, and i said "did you step in dog poop" and DS looked at him and said with a sullen face "dog poop"... too funny!

DS's first words were "Dada" and "Mama". What I consider his first "real" word after that is "Balloon". He said it the week of his first birthday. He started out with "Oh loon" and now it's "Balloo". Whenever we go into a store and he sees them he goes nuts saying "Balloo" over and over!

DD's first word in context was Mama, then Dog . Now she mostly just says "woof" when we see a dog though, she likes the noise better than the word!

DD's first word was kitty, which makes sense because she is totally in love with my older cat (and vice versa ;) lol). She said Daddy not longer after. Now she says a number of words, including kitty, cat, and kitty cat. But she still doesn't say mama in context (just babbles it). :)

Dada. The very next day she said "Mom," but neither was in context.
I have a whole list of words in her baby book but the one that stands out in my memory right now is "Wizzit?" (Where is it?) DD said it on a fairly regular basis and she DID seem to say it in the proper context. We'd hide something and she'd say "Wizzit?"

These are great! Keep sharing! :) Cartersmommy - "dogpoop" is classic! My DS isn't talking yet, just lots of babble and I look forward to hearing that first word.
