Know what MMOG stands for? How 'bout AC? THAC0? What about D20? Familiar with Fairun? Know that Mana does not rhyme with Banana? Can you name the Eight Virtues? Can you tell how to get to get from Qeynos to Freeport without using TP? Do you know that TP in that instance does not mean Toilet Paper?
If you answered yes to any one of these questions, then you must be a gamer geek, and this is your place to Geek Out.
So come on, give us you Gamer Geek Resume. You know you want to. Whatever it is -- don't be embarassed. Cause I can almost guarantee you, whatever that resume says ... my kung-foo is better than your kung-foo.

Joining in. I've been a gamer since I was 2 and got an Atari 2600Not into the MMORPGs, but a gamer geek nonetheless. Right now most of my attention is going to my beautiful pink imported-from-Japan Nintendo DS. Every now and then, I'll pick up the PS2 for "We Love Katamari"

OMG, Katamari. It took months for me to get the Katamari Damacy (http://www.tleaves.com/weblog/audio/katamari1.mp3) theme out of my head.
Thanks, Aimee. :p

Hah - I remember the days when nobody had teleport skills, and going through the karanas was the only way to get there.
OK so here's my gamer geek resume. Feel free to make this face  at any time.
My first RPG was Ultima IV, played on an IBM PC when I was about 12. I played the Ultima series through Ultima VII. Never really got into the King's Quest series.
Anyway. Geek Resume. Here you go.
In 1997 I was playing Internet Bridge on The Zone before the zone was bought out by Microsoft. Someone there said, "Hey - you seen this game called The Realm (http://www.realmserver.com/)? You gotta check it out." So I looked at The Realm, started playing, and I was hooked (check out the screenshots (http://www.realmserver.com/main_Screenshots.shtml) -- too funny). I didn't realize you were supposed to pick a "Character Name" for your character -- and my own first name was already taken -- so I named myself Janey, cause that's my middle name (with a Y -- Jane was also taken). Anyway - 'couldn't tear me away from that thing. I was collecting baldrics (don't ask  ) till I was blue in the face and bloodshot in the eye.
By Fall of 1998, I was getting bored of The Realm (the level grinding really got old ... if I only knew what was ahead!!) and that was okay, because Ultima Online (http://www.uo.com/) was out. I emailed this guy named Raph who seemed pretty smart with some game design idea that I had but can't remember what it was now, and he wrote back (can you imagine that happening, these days??) and that was enough to make me want to make the switch. So my friend Davian and I jumped ship over to Ultima Online. We became members of the Ultima Online NewsGroup (AKA the UONG ... back when all the cool people were on UseNet), where we ranted and raved about this game that we loved.
I wrote all these stories about being a wide-eyed newbie (http://www.sunsword.com/janey/stories/uo/uostories.htm), and somehow -- I really don't remember how this all happened -- Raph mentioned me on some forum as being a Witty and Interesting Writer or some such thing, and the rest of them were like "OMG you're FAMOUS!" So that's when I became Famous Janey.
At some point, OSI took away the tents (there were tents where you could put a vendor to sell your stuff), and the were a lot easier to place than houses, and they were everywhere. When they did that, Davian and I became owners of The Best Dressed Britannian (http://www.sunsword.com/janey/uopics.htm) -- I finally had a place to sell my clothes. I was a archer/healer/tamer/tailor who was on a Quest for people to dress a little better than they had been dressing in the past. ;) No More Neon Jester Suits!
Another good memory -- The Lootless Army. We tried to take the Crossroads back from the PKs using newbie characters with pretty much no loot. Man oh man those were the days.
So anyway, that was pretty fun while it lasted.
1999 rolls around, and it's time for Everquest. Most of the people I played UO with had played since it came out, lived through the Dead Lord days, flamestriking pigs, and they'd had it with UO. So we pretty much all moved over to EQ. We played on the E'Ci server, and started a guild called The Arbiters (which still exists, if on a smaller scale). I made a human ranger named Janey but quickly figured out that both Humans and Rangers were teh suk, so I made a Wood Elf Druid named Rori (http://www.sunsword.com/janey/stories/eq/eqstories.htm). She was the one I stuck with.
So I got up to level thirty-something, and a few of us decide that Everquest is the most ridiculous game we ever played. The thing is, though, at that point in time, there just weren't a lot of options. You played UO, or you played EQ, or you played nothing. We weren't all that happy with any of those options.
Our friend Dundee, who was a UONGer and an aspiring game designer, gave us a third option: He created a player-run UO shard called World of Dreams (and later, a second shard called Ackadia, which I think might still be running (http://www.ackadia.org/mx/index.php)). So we all went over to play on the UO Shard. So then we had some sort of interesting sociological player happening something-or-other, and I wrote Raph and said, "Hey check out what's happening over here on our Player-Self-Policed shard" ... which got Dundee and Raph talking ... and Raph says, "Send me your resume so I can talk to you about what I'm doing." (Eventually this part of the story will get picked up later)
Soooo, Dark Ages of Camelot came out in 2001, and we all went over there. I was again, a Ranger-Type named Janey. We made a guild called The Stonecutters. We didn't stick around DAOC for very long... it felt a whole heck of a lot like EQ to us, and we didn't really like EQ.
Somehow around here, I got talked into going back to EQ. Maybe they'd just released an expansion or something; I don't remember. I re-started out playing a wood elf ranger named Jaini (so clever), but soon I gave up on her and started playing Rori again. I never got to level 60 -- I didn't have the patience. I think I got to 56. I really wanted to get some chitin armor so I didn't have to show my b00bies to every leering dwarf passing by but I think I ended up getting every piece except the chest piece.
Somewhere in here, Dundee got a job working at SOE, on Star Wars Galaxies. They announced the Planets for Star Wars Galaxies, and one of them was called The Planet Rori (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Star_Wars_moons#Rori), which was actually a Moon of Naboo. Heh. There was also a Starport on the planet Talus named Dearic (http://swg.allakhazam.com/db/cities.html?swgcity=2), which was the name of Davian's EQ Dwarf Warrior.
Also somewhere in here I tried playing PnP games with some guys I found through Yahoo Groups ... but nothing really stuck. I found 4-hour combats to be way too boring. I think I'm a pure CRPGer.
In 2004, Raph's book was published (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1932111972/ref=pd_rvi_gw_1/002-7475066-4611242?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=283155), and I'm in it somewhere, apparently ... though I've never read his book.
So just before SWG came out, I traveled to Austin, thinking maybe I'd move there and get a job somewhere cause holy moses housing's cheap down there and I was getting tired of living in super expensive Seattle. I had lunch with Raph and such and he said -- this is my biggest Claim to Geek Fame right here so hold onto your hats -- that The Planet Rori is now in the Star Wars pantheon... there's an entry in the Skywalker Ranch Vault that tells about the SWG Planet named Rori... named after my everquest character. If you can believe that.
So anyhow, of course we played SWG. At first, I was Janey the Tailor, but then I got broken up with by a Schmuck who I'd originally met in EQ (he lived in SF; and we had a 9-month long distance relationship, flying back and forth - you can imagine what that was like) so I quit that game, but picked it back up later with my friend Venture on a different server. On the other server, I was a Combat Medic named Maryn, and that was a blast.
Just as the Schmuck was breaking up with me, I went on a RL-Quest to lose 100+ pounds, which I did. I quit playing SWG right about the time I started getting really serious about losing weight. And then I met B ... and then he and I started playing NWN together... and that's about where we are now.
So there you have it -- my geek resume.
Your Turn. :D

OOOOO, Can I be a member of the Gaming Geek Squad!?!?!?! I'm so excited.
DH has been a gaming geek for quite some time...me, about 4 years. He got me into Ultima Online when we first met and we played that for about 2 years together, then we moved on to SWG and played tht for about a year before WOW came out. WoW was the new obsesion, but somewhere along the way DH got annoyed with something and decided to go back to ultima with some specail promotion they had. We went back to Ultima, found our old guildies, foudnt hat we both had several million gold in our banks, bought a couple houses...and then ditched the game about 4 months later to go back to WoW with a new patch that DH heard was rockin. Now we're addicted to WoW again.
We're on earthen ring. DH has a Lvl 60 Troll SHaman and a 42 Undead Rouge and some other low lvl alts. I play mainly on my Lvl 40 Undead Mage and am currently working on an Undead Rouge that is a Lvl 12. I really don't play often, just put in my new game card last night. I try to play mostly on the weekends, but get a few hours in during the week. DH is a guild leader and we have a pretty decent guil. Lots of noobs, but also a lot of high Lvl vets. I'm thinking about throwing an alt on a PVP server, just for the hell of it, but I just don't play enough to build up a character that would kick ass anytime soon.
Is anyone else on earthen ring?? I'm trying to get a friend of mine at work to hop onto our server and join our guild. So I'll be sticking around here for some advice!!!

You know what was surprising to me ... is that SirBruce's latest Subscription Numbers just came out ... and Ultima Online has had as many or more subscribers as it had when I was playing back in 1998. (WOW is, of course, kicking the everloving crap out of everybody else.)
Graphs here (http://www.mmogchart.com/). Of course, Raph points out some of the misleading bits (http://www.raphkoster.com/2006/06/01/measuring-mmos/), but still... interesting data, nonetheless.

Hi all,
just saw over in the other gaming thread that you were starting up this one, so i thought i'd get in on the ground level. as the title of my post suggests i am an uber noob, i just started playing WoW recently. I have a l18 human pally and a l12 nightelf hunter. I really really love playing this game. DH tried to get me into playing Baldurs Gate ages ago, but i couldn't really get into it. WoW however hooked me, and we just had to buy another account so that we can play at the same time.
BTW has anyone seen Pure Pwnage? I love those shows they are so funny ( once i figured out what he was saying of course, as this was before i started playing WoW) i think i've watched it too much though as i have started calling everyone 'n00b' and saying 'lol' when i laugh at times... trust me, it's more embarasing than it sounds.

There are new MMORPG surveys at The Daedalus Project (http://www.nickyee.com/mmorpg/), for current MMORPG players.
The Sims 2 doesn't count as an MMORPG, so I don't get to do the surveys. :/

Started gaming very young. The first game I would play was Zork with my Dad at the age of 6. We played 1, 2, 3 and Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy.
Lately, DH and I will stay play diablo II for hours over our home network.
After all of these years, D2 is getting too boring and easy. I've tried some of the versions online, but most of them screw up things too much. Any suggestions? DH will also play heroes of M&M, but that is a bit too slow for me. Also, we need easy controls--I usually kept to 2 skills per button since I couldn't keep track of what spell was on which hotkey.
Janey
06-14-2006, 01:56 PM
2kCougar - Have you tried Dungeon Siege? It's pretty close to Diablo -- just with updated graphics.
If you want something a little more quest/story intensive vs. hack-n-slash, I recommend Neverwinter Nights (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000B8K7RC/qid=1150318329/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-7475066-4611242?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=468642). The Diamond Edition has the main game + 2 expansion packs bundled. As for controls... NWN is pretty easy. 12 hotkeys along the bottom (hooked to your 12 F keys) and there's a picture on each one that says what they do -- you choose what they do. I play a ranger who wears 2 swords at one time... we 'spell up' before big battles but other than heal potions, i don't really hit hotkeys a whole lot during combat.
B and I have been playing it on our LAN for a while now, and it's a blast. :D
GeekGirl
06-14-2006, 09:17 PM
I wholeheartedly second NWN. As long as you're not trying to play it over an internet connection, it's tons of fun. IMO Shadows of Undrentide is the best one on the disc. The other thing that's really nice about NWN is that because it comes packaged with game creation software, there are lots and lots of user-made gaming modules on the internet - and some of them are really good!
Of course, I don't do much but play WoW nowadays, so I'm not really one to talk about other games...:p :D

GeekGirl

The only thing that was sort of hard for me to get used to with NWN after playing WoW for so long is that it is a turn-based RPG. With WoW I got so used to a pot taking effect as soon as I took it, whereas with NWN you have to wait your turn. Just a heads up. :D

Dude! I'm sooo busy playing Sims 2 (Well that, and being nauseas). I *heart* Sims 2. It has so many games that aren't even part of the game -- like The Download Game (http://www.welldressedsim.com/) that goes with the regular game. It's like clothes shopping, furniture shopping, all in one... for FREE. The bonus part is that everything always looks great the moment you put it on. :p
I assume you are still WoWing it up?
And 2kCougar - have you tried NWN yet?
2kCougar
06-24-2006, 04:44 AM
DH and I have been playing NWN. I keep getting my butt kicked! It takes some getting used to the turn based set up. I started out with a sorcerer (my normal D2 character) but I couldn't make it through to the end of the training session. Now I'm using a ranger, which seems to be able to handle herself a little better.
Janey
07-05-2006, 01:27 PM
Raph posted this on his blog today; I thought it was pretty neat.
https://www.playerep.com/
2kCougar - I keep meaning to say - I play a NWN ranger and think it's MUCH easier than using a spellcaster. Make liberal use of the Space Bar. There's a setting in the game before you enter that says something about "allow pausing" ... we turned it to Yes. As soon as we did that, our lives got much easier. :)
We haven't played NWN in soooo long. I miss it. I think I might see if B's up for some gaming tonight.

I'm an admitted gaming addict. I don't play the MMORPGs much anymore because I become seriously sucked into them. I've played DAoC (loved it!), City of Heroes, City of Villians, WOW, NWN, and Guild Wars. Of those, I only still play Guild Wars with DH occasionally (I'm a bit too tired to stay up late anymore to play).
I play D&D with DH and friends about twice a month. I love D&D. My character is now a 10th level Druid/3rd level Lion of Talisid.
DH and I go to GenCon and DragonCon about every year. This year we're only going to DragonCon.

Anyone planning on going to GenCon in Indiana next month? DH is the gamer and he's going there.
He went to Origins in Columbus, Ohio in June and got hooked on Settlers of Catan. He bought the mini version and a "University of Catan Alumni" shirt. He liked the game so much, he bought the regular sized version (and then, the "booster" box for more people to play).
The other night, he brought a friend home and he taught me to play. It was really easy to learn and fun! We played 2 games.

Ugh, soooooooooooo jealous that you're going to DragonCon. The only way we were going to be able to go was if my student loan check came in time...which it hasn't. :(
I think the reason I'm liking our Aberrant game more than DnD is because it's just an all-around simpler system - there's less math, less dice, less confusion. It didn't take an entire evening just to roll characters. We got a decent amount done, and our GM paced the game pretty well. I'm excited to see what our story arc plays out to be. It's also nice, because this particular group will be able to play pretty regularly, which also makes a difference in the enjoyment of a game.
LOL I can't wait to see the rest of the Whores of Warcraft site! n00bz w b00bz. I'm curious to see if it's going to be a "legit" nerd pr0n site. :p

LOL - great T-shirt.
I'd never heard of PotBS. Looks neat. Horrible acronym, though! :p Doesn't looks like there is a Mac version which makes it a no go for me (well, a no-go for B, which makes it a no-go for me).
I bought the Knights & Cities of Catan expansion to bring on our mini-vacay to the San Juans but we never ended up playing that part -- just Catan. The thought of learning something new when we were supposed to be relaxing just wasn't too attractive, I guess.
Elenna
09-13-2006, 06:08 PM
Oh, my, I love that t-shirt! Too bad the popular sizes are all backordered.
DH and I play Guild Wars. We really like it. A big plus for the game is that is does not have a monthy fee. It doesn't have as many time wasting features (fishing, crafting, etc) the other MMORPGs have, but it is still a good game.
DragonCon was good. But it didn't seem as fun as previous years. Maybe being pregnant dampened it for me (I didn't have the energy to stay up as late or walk around so much). Plus, it was really, really crowded (even after expanding to take up 3 hotels instead of the normal 2). We're not going to go next year because we'll have a baby. I had thought having a baby wouldn't stop us from going next year, but then we saw a lot of people with strollers struggling to get around in the crowds. I don't want to do that.

Lanapoo - I LOVE the sims, but have zero time/patience to play it lately. :/ I didn't know they were coming out with a Pets expansion. I only have Nightlife & the college one... I hate how I get behind and then it's like $100 to catch back up. I wish they'd put out the expansions in "combo packs."

Janey - I know what you mean about not having the time. I go through spurts too. I only started playing again last week when I haven't played in like 5 months! I have absolutely no patience with keeping up with the sims needs and aspiration level so I totally cheat with that and downloaded the ultimate hack (the Insiminator).

Apparently, Raph is going to be on NPR's "Talk of the Nation" tomorrow talking about games & gaming. How mainstream is that, I ask you!

I’m back in the gaming…I had to buy a PS2 Slim since my PS2 was stolen in June by the moving company I used, along with my Kingdom Hearts II game. They will burn for it!
Anyway, I am back to playing Kingdom Hearts II. I’m sure *some* of you recognize me from way back in the day…
My gaming resume….
Circa 1990, The Legend of Zelda (http://www.zelda.com/universe/game/zelda/) for Classic NES
This is what got my love for Link started. I was instantly mesmerized and beat that game thoroughly.
I did not purchase a GameBoy nor any of the Zelda games for the Game Boy
Circa 1998, The Legend of Zelda, The Ocarina of Time (http://www.zelda.com/universe/game/ocarinatime/) for Nintendo 64
This was in my opinion the best Zelda game ever...but I haven't tried the others so I can't give a valid opinion.
Circa 2000, The Legend of Zelda, Majora's Mask (http://www.zelda.com/universe/game/majora/) for Nintendo 64
This was a not so good sequel to The Ocarina of Time, I didn't even finish it, didn't care for it.
Circa 2002, Kingdom Hearts I (http://na.square-enix.com/games/kingdomhearts/) - I got this game on a whim because what attracted me was the Disney Characters. I was HOOKED
Circa 2003-2004, Gauntlet Dark Legacy (http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/action/gauntletdarklegacy/) - This game was a life saver as it kept me from being bored to tears during my last 4 months of pregnancy as I was taken off work and had to take an early maternity leave.
Circa 2006, Neopets, The Darkest Fairie (http://ps2.ign.com/objects/744/744714.html) - As you can tell from my sig, I'm also into Neopets but not as much as I used to be. I also started this game last April but couldn't finish because my PS2 was stolen. I will probably start this one up again once I download the walkthrough.
Present, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (http://www.zelda.com/universe/game/twilightprincess/) - I am still waiting for my GameCube to come in the mail so I can start this game which came out last December, 2006
Present, The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker (http://www.zelda.com/universe/game/wind/)- Also still waiting for the GameCube to start this game to.
Circa 2006 to Present, Kingdom Hearts II (http://na.square-enix.com/games/kingdomhearts/) - And the obsession continues...I am currently finishing up this one right now.
That is my gaming resume for now. I wished I could dabble more into other games and consoles but real life just always gets in the way. But no matter where my gaming profession leads...my heart will always belong to Link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Link_(Legend_of_Zelda)) and Sora (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sora_%28Kingdom_Hearts%29).

A fellow gamer here!!! I am burned out on WoW right now. I did not buy Burning Crusades yet. Is it really worth the price for those of you who have it?? What are the best parts of the game? I just think it is so expensive for an expansion pack. I may pick it up when I get paid on Monday. Still have not decided yet.
I think the readon I got burned out was because my level 60 mage is my favorite character, but I cannot do anything with her now. :( I have a level 24 druid working her way up, but honestly, I LOVE being a mage.
Well any way, has anyone heard about Age of Conan yet?? Now THAT will be a real online game!!! I just watched a video with my husband about the character creation options. They are so much better than WoW. A lot more realistic.
Ok, I feel like playing the sims for a while :P I have not played it in a long time. See ya!

Thanks for the welcome.
I hear ya on the time for the gaming thing. But I just make time. Actually, it's my one hour at the end of the day that I use to wind down. I put the kid to sleep then play for about an hour...then I'm ready for bed.

Gosh, it's been a while since I've been in here! I haven't had any time to play much of anything btw work, school, and house hunting!! We finally fixed the hard drive problem (lack of space) for my laptop, so hopefully we'll be able to load WoW back onto it along with the expansion, so that I can take it on my upcoming business trips and play in my hotel room. :D
In the meantime, here's some funny MC Chris to share:

Can I join? :) I'm an RPG geek, though I've never gotten into the MMORPGs. Everyone and their uncle seems to be into WoW, and I really would like to get into that. Not that I have a whole ton of time for gaming these days!
OK, my gaming resume. I'm only including my fave games, because if I were to list EVERYTHING, it could get ridiculous!
Nintendo (classic): Legend of Zelda and Link--the first games that got me seriously hooked on RPGs. I played them over and over again, and I would probably still be playing them NOW, if my ex didn't have my NES.
Simon's Quest (part of the Castelvania series)--REALLY good, and underrated RPG. This was the second in a series of 3 Castlevania games for the NES, and the only really good one, IMO.
I also played the Mario trilogy - Super Mario Bros, and Super Mario Bros 2 & 3 I liked the third one the best.
PS1: Final Fantasy 7 got me into a whole new obsession with RPG's. I uncovered every single secret corner in that game. As an added bonus, I discovered that the music from FF7 soothes my cranky DS to sleep. :)
Final Fantasy 8 was awesome. I didn't 'feel' for the characters the way I did in FF7, but still a good game.
Castlevania:Symphony of the Night - another GREAT RPG in the Castlevania series. Most of the action is 2D, which is the only drawback.
Onto the PS2. Naturally I snagged Final Fantasy X as soon as it came out! Great game, great storyline, in the vein of FF7. I also played Final Fantasy X-2. Kind of a 'fluff' game, but lots of fun.
I never did get FFXI--the MMORPG format kind of put me off. But maybe I'll give it a chance and try it one of these days.
Finally, I recently picked up the collector's edition of Final Fantasy XII. Yay! I have yet to play it, but I know what I'll be doing this weekend!
