I really like Charlotte. a lot.

Madison and Madelyn are so popular now and Charlie is the cutest nickname ever.

Can anyone think of anything with Ashton?
Ash seems a likely nickname.

We are completely stuck on girl's name, anybody want to chime in?

Our top contenders are:
Charlotte

*swoon*

I love Charlotte.

I love the name Charlotte. DH hates it though. We will never agree on a name for baby #2. I found a list DH made yesterday of girl names and I wasn't thrilled with any of them.

red, I LOVE Madelyn, but agree that any of those go with Logan and they all have cute nicknames! :) If you use an M name, I would use Victoria Marie as the middle names, rather than the other way around. Good luck deciding!!

Mindy, I agree that Ash would be a nickname for Ashton, but it's not a bad nickname, you know? Just a shorter way to get their attention! :p Part of it is what you decide to call the child too. My son's name is Lucas and he has never been a Luke. We made it clear that he would be Lucas (at least until school when we no longer have control!) and it has always been that way! So if you are opposed to a nickname, just make it clear! Lucas would never know who the heck someone was talking to if they called him Luke (at this point). Good luck choosing! :)

Exactly, I don't want people to call him "Ash" just like with you, it's "Lucas". I want him called "Ashton", I knew that they could come up with Ash, but I don't think it's common, when I say Ashton, I don't think someone will say Ash, let's go. I just want it to be Ashton.

As for your situation, I'm a teacher, and if you tell the teacher his name is Lucas, and that is what he call him and that is what we want him called, they will call him Lucas, so you are good there!

As for the other poster, I like Charlotte, but DH doesn't.

Mindy, I think Ash might be used by those close to him once in a while (like using Em for Emily or something like that) but not as a true nickname. Ashton is DH's #1 boy name and I actually really like it too!

Ainsley is cute, but it's one of those names that seems very "kid" and not very "mature woman".
Madelyn would have to spend a LOT of time correcting the spelling of her name.
Madison is really trendy. And technically, it means "Son of Maud", which has always struck me as a really weird thing to name a girl.
I *love* Charlotte. It's very classic and traditional, so it fits with Victoria Marie really well. The other three are so modern, the very traditional middle names seem kind of jarring in contrast.

I have a Godson named Christian. He's NEVER been called "Chris" by anyone who knows him and all others are told once not to and that's all it takes. The kid knows his name. Most nicknames are established at home anyway, and if your son hears YOU correcting people then he will take over that responsibility when he's old enough.

Shoulda: Love, love, love Henry Neal! Henry ranked very high for us if DC#2 were to be a boy. :D It's a solid, classic name..... so great!

For DD, Avery seems to be our top pick. We are torn on the middle name..... either Avery Rose or Avery Simone. Any input or other suggestions?

TIA!

I think Avery Simone is really pretty, and Simone is kind of a different middle name. I like it! FWIW, I think what keeps me from *loving* Avery Rose is possibly too many "r's?"

One of the girl's names we are really liking lately is Sasha. So DH and I are trying to decide if we use this, if Sasha would be her given name, or we would go with Alexandra and use Sasha as her nickname. I am voting for Alexandra, since it gives her a more "formal" first name if she wants to use that when she's older. What do you ladies think?

MichelleRenee

I love the name Avery and the name Simone! they are beautiful together!

Baby Lust
03-21-2008, 07:48 PM
I think Avery Simone is very pretty, and I agree that it has much more individuality than Avery Rose.

Carrie, Would you mind if people called her Alex? I would guess with Alexandra that this would be a common nickname. Sasha is very pretty, and I agree that Alexandra would be a nice formal name to choose between as she got older.

We are trying to think of names that go well with DD's name, and we more than likely will not find out the sex, so we'll have a while to go back and forth on all kinds of names. lol.

DD's name is Julia, and right now I'm really liking either Jenna or Annabelle for a girl, and Jackson for a boy.

Thoughts?

sublime311
03-22-2008, 07:35 AM
I love Annabelle, but I think you'll get hung up on the J names if you go with Jenna or Jackson. I do like Jenna and Jackson, though. Just think it's too matchy matchy.

Rachel, I like them all, but I think Annabelle goes better with Julia, just because Jenna sounds too similar. Plus the syllables match, but it depends on if you care about that! :p Jackson is so cute, but so popular around here! Good luck deciding!!

Mystikal
03-22-2008, 04:36 PM

Baby Lust
03-22-2008, 07:13 PM

The names Mike and I are agreeing on right now:

Juliette
Abigail (too popular for me)
Arabella
Aliyah

Caleb

And that's it - we are seriously lacking in the "boys" category! Neither of us even particularly loves "Caleb." Last time when we chose our DS's name it was just SO perfect. I am sad to think we won't find that perfect name this time!

LOVE Arabella!

It is DH's all time favorite girl name. I have gone back and forth on it. I like it but there is something that stops me from loving it. I don't really want to stress over a name until we know if it is a boy or a girl but it is going to stay on "the list" for now.

I'm finally jumping in here. Baby #2 is due in September and we won't be finding out the sex. My top names right now are:
Boy:
Domenic
Declan
Middle name: Michael

Girl:
Fiona
Darra
Aoife (Ee-fa)
Middle name: Heidi (yes, it doesn't flow well but we use godparents' names as middle names and I'm pretty sure I will be asking my sister- although I could use her middle name, Ann.)

Domenic is really my top choice (it was my grandfather's name), but DH is Irish, our last name is Irish, DD #1's name is Lucy, and we will have more children and they will all have Irish names. So is Domenic really out of place?

I remember posting in here last year while I was pregnant but I never came back in and posted the name we chose.

Eleanor Josephine

She was very nearly Roslin Josephine but Eleanor won out at the last minute. I was sick after Ellie was born (and before we had named her...we didn't giver her a name until 2 days after she was born) and got kind of loopy on the drugs they gave me. If DH had listened to me while I was "on drugs" DD would be named Eowyn (from Lord of the Rings) I'm glad he had a clear head, I remember really trying to convince him that was the perfect name for her!

Katie1-I like Declan for a boy and Fiona for a girl.

How do you pronouce Declan, like it sounds or is there a "twist" to it? I'm not sure I would name my DD Fiona just because of the teasing issues around Shrek. But I guess Shrek will be old and passe' before our DD's are old enough to care!

Unless you plan to move to Ireland, I wouldn't use Aoife. I think if you have to give a pronunciation guide for the name, it's a red flag.

Are you set on a "D" name for a boy?

Rosebud

How do you pronouce Declan, like it sounds or is there a "twist" to it?

DEK-lun. That's my little boy's name! It's still pretty uncommon here since L.A. doesn't have a big Irish population. You hear it more often on the East Coast, and of course in Ireland. We find ourselves having to spell it & explain the origin of it more than we expected.

I have a Declan too (born 6/8/06) and we have to say his name twice/spell it so often even here in the Boston area. That's okay with me though. We had his named picked out years ago and it suits him perfectly. :D

Good luck with your decision!

What do you guys think of the spelling Eoin for Owen?

TracyDP

What do you guys think of the spelling Eoin for Owen?

I like it, it's different. However, I have a mother and an aunt that are teachers and they said that having a fancy spelling for kids names can sometimes not be worth it in the end and makes things harder for them (teachers and the kids). My Eleanor was almost Elanor but in the end we decided that having it spelled unique just wasn't that important when we considered her having to spell it correctly to everyone she ever gives it to for the rest of her life. I am constantly spelling my last name because it is an odd spelling of a common word and it's a PITA. We had to have them reprint our mortgage paperwork the other day because they spelled my last name wrong (it's hyphenated with DH's last name). I'm glad I don't have to do it with my first name too, though often it gets spelled Traci.

I'm sure I'll get 10 people with unique spelled names that will tell me I'm wrong that they love having unique names. If you love yours or your DC's odd or uniquely spelled name I think that's great. I'm just putting this perspective out there as a consideration before you make the decision of a lifetime of people spelling their name wrong.

I'm personally not a huge fan because it makes me think of the word "groin" for some reason. I can't really speak though -- I chose the alternative spelling on my son's name because I like the way it "looks." :p

What do you guys think of the spelling Eoin for Owen

That's how my BIL spells his name and he has always hated it. Very few know how to pronounce it upon reading it and if they don't see it written, they always sepll it the American way. Funny that my in-laws picked that spelling (though my MIL grew up in Ireland) b/c my husband is Brian and my SIL is Rachel.

ETA: I'm pretty sure that my in-laws chose this spelling b/c it's the Irish equivelent of John (my FIL's name).

Jess71903

I would pronounce Eoin like Eowyn if I just saw it. I am a big believer in spelling a name in a way that would be most common/recognizable for the sake of the child who would have to either spell his/her name for the rest of their life or have people mispronounce a common name. My mom's name is Vickey- v-i-c-k-E-Y...at least that's how I've always heard her have to say it.

FWIW I do love Irish names, though.

2 weeks until the big u/s. Our list changes daily.

Josephine
Juliet
Aliyah
Arabella (still DH's fave, I don't love it, but don't hate it. We just had a niece born who was named Gabriella, nn Ella so I wonder if this would end up being too similar. We see them a lot, like several times a week so it's not like some distant relative or something.)

Colin (but DH is going back and say he no longer likes this one. This is my favorite.)

Ava
Carys

Aiden

DH and I are trying to find names for our boy/girl twins, due in October.

DD was born October 06 and we had a tough time choosing her name. DH really wanted to call her Paige Elizabeth and I really wanted to name her what she is named, obviously DH finally compromised and "gave in" to me.

Now that we are having another girl, he really wants to name her Paige Elizabeth. I like it, but there is something about it I really don't love. It hasn't grown on me any in the last 18 months, either. I would say I'm luke warm on it. However, I kind of feel obligated to give DH the girl name he really wants, since he gave me mine for DD. (Not to mention he keeps vetoing any other name I suggest, lol!)

My absolute favorite name for a boy is Parker James. BUT, I'm concerned that having twins called Paige and Parker is too matchy matchy. (DD's name starts with an I, by the way.) I just feel like I'll be always explaining that we didn't choose two "P" names because they are twins, but because they ended up being the names we liked. However, I don't really want to change Parker James (which DH likes), if I am choosing a less than perfect (in my mind) name for the girl.

So, do you guys think it's really cheesy to have twins have names starting with the same letter?

Rose
06-22-2008, 07:09 PM
I think Paige and Parker do sound a bit matchy but I don't think it's terrible. I love the name Paige though. What about Elizabeth Paige?

I think you & DH should both be happy with the names and your DH shouldn't have to compromise so get all of the names you wanted but I know names can be so tricky.

Bloomwood
06-22-2008, 08:46 PM
I just got DD a potty training video, "go Potty Go," in which the characters are Paige and Parker Panda. Hence, that is all I can think of when I hear the names, but I'm sure I am in the great minority.

That said, I think the names are nice. I don't think matchy names are that bad. It is pretty common.

I don't think names that start with the same letter are too matchy-matchy. I think rhyming names are too matchy-matchy. Also, naming them things like Patrick and Patricia would be too much.

I agree with this. I like both Paige and Parker. However now knowing that they are panda's in a potty training video I might have to rethink ;) FWIW I really like Elizabeth Paige as well.

i like both Parker and Paige...i dont think they are too matchy matchy...truthfully...we have a son named Eli and if we ever have a girl Ella is at the top of the list...they sound alike and start with the same letter, no big deal to us...I say if you like the names go for it...:D

kemorr, I don't know--I kind of feel like people on CC can tell you that Parker and Paige are fine together, but if it's something that is not great to *you* (their mom!) then maybe look for other options.

Doesn't Felicity Huffman's character (Lynette?) on Desperate Housewives have kids with all P names?

FWIW, I do think Elizabeth Paige is a really pretty name.

Parker, Preston, Porter, Penny

I always thought I'd name all my kids with the same initial because it seemed cool somehow. :p

DD is "Melia" and just a year ago, I've been all set with these other names too: Mason, Maile (My-lee), Mahealani

But now I've been loving these girl names: Calista, Jacinda

no, there was a character on Lost, named Juliet, and I never once thought it was "character" - just that it was a pretty name.

I think she was referring to the Shakespeare character. ;)

I think Juliet is lovely.

My son's name is Griffin and we discussed having the nickname of Finn (we now call him Griff though). What about Griffin Neal?

FWIW, his middle name is "Todd" which is a family name and it does not flow *at all* but it was non-negotiable and has significance which is what we were going for. Good luck, I like Neal a lot too. :)

we ended up going with Griffin Neal and love it! although my intent was to call him Finn, it has ended up being Griff largely due to my 2 year old that has chosen that nick name.

anyway, thanks for all the suggestions over the past 9 months ladies! I am still stunned we ended up making a decision we both felt good about! wasn't sure that was ever going to happen.

Oh, great! Parker and Paige aren't all that common, who would have thought that some potty training video maker would have come up with them! Although, I guess if they're pandas that makes sense, lol! It's probably not enough to put me off, though.

We did know that Lynette on Desperate Housewives had a Parker, which initially turned DH off the name, but then we sort of realised that whilst slowly gaining in popularity, it hasn't sky-rocketed due to it being a DH name, unlike Emma did after Friends. Maybe because Lynette has so many "P" kids, no-one can remember the individual names! Thankfully, she called her daughter Penny, not Paige and thankfully DD's name starts with an I, not a P.

DH and I both really like Elizabeth Paige and we think it flows better than Paige Elizabeth. However, neither of us likes Liz, Lizzie, Beth, Betty, Eliza or any of the other common nicknames for Elizabeth. Unfortunately, I think it is really, really unlikely that an Elizabeth will be called her full name once she is at school. Nicknames for it are just too common. That's why we nixed it as a first name.

Thanks for the input! I'm sure we'll come to a decision.....eventually!

Well, I teach school and I've had more than one Elizabeth over the years, so it can happen. I also knew an Elisabeth who went by Lisa, and I like the nn Betsy, though that may make me a weirdo. :)

jesseybell
06-23-2008, 11:37 AM
Our Elizabeth goes by Ellie (though we did call her Elizabeth for the first 15 months of her life- our intention was always to call her Ellie but I wanted to get used to Elizabeth and it wasn't until she went to the toddler room in daycare that we made the change)

The 4 generations before me were all Elizabeth too and they all went by different "B" nicknames - I love the name Beth but DH does not and we both don't like Liz or Liza. Ellie isn't a typical nickname for Elizabeth but we haven't had anyone ask us yet if it is Eleanor.

If we have another girl someday her name most likely will be Emily because we like the name and it is a family name....but a boy would be a completely different name.

I just wanted to pop in to say that we decided on a name for our BOY. :)

Reuben David

I've never been a big fan of Reuben, but it was FIL's name, and he passed away unexpected Monday evening, the same day we found out this little guy is a little guy. We were unable to tell him, so we wanted to honor him in some way. Plus, we can call him "Ben" for short, which is my grandpa's name, and I always wanted to name a boy after my grandpa. David is my fathers name. :)

Interesting. And people gave my mom heck back in 1982 when she named me Michelle with a son named Michael at home. Everyone told her our names are "too similar." (Ha, and I married a Michael too.)

Anyways, with the big u/s only a few days away I am SO antsy thinking about names! I really hate that we don't already have one boy name and one girl name picked out. I feel like everywhere I go I am analyzing people's names, as if choosing a name based on someone else's personality will somehow shape our baby into the person we hope he or she will become. I have a friend with two little girls. Today I asked them what we should name the baby if she's a girl. One said "Stephanie." No clue where that came from, but I like it. It's my grandma's name and she's my best friend. The other said "Butterfly." (she's 3) The sad thing..... I actually stopped and considered it for a second. Insanity!

Noor, as in Queen Noor? Love it. :)

I didn't know about Queen Noor but it's fitting (from Queen Noor's Website (http://www.noor.gov.jo/personal_profile.htm))

Her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordan is an international humanitarian activist and an outspoken voice on issues of world peace and justice. She was born Lisa Najeeb Halaby, to an Arab-American family distinguished for its public service

Bolding is mine. My niece is also born to an Arab-American family however, she was born in and will grow up in Casablanca, Morocco. I'm guessing my sister and bil know of her. I'll have to ask her when I talk to her tomorrow.

IMO, though... Ashling = always having to spell it and correct people ("no, not Ashley")

As someone who always has to correct people on pronunciation of her name I can tell you it gets pretty tiresome. Just something to consider.

WisWis
07-08-2008, 06:40 PM
I agree with Marisa's Ashling comment. It sounds similar to Ashley, and Asher, and Aisling. Is it a real name?

I think Ella is the better name by far.

Klav - I disagree with PPs. I love the name Ashling! I have met two girls who have that name. I think it is a regional thing - certainly places near Baltimore, NY, and Boston with large Irish American populations will get it.

I prefer Aisling just because it is the true Irish spelling, but i think Ashling is more common and may be easier for her. I think Liam and Ashling go very nicely together. Liam and Ella just seem so different.

But both are very pretty names!

polkadot
07-08-2008, 07:09 PM
So Ashling is an Irish name that is becoming more popular? I didnt know where it came from, it would have to grow on me and I would be concerned that people would have a hard time with it.Does Ashling have any special meaning, to you and yoru family, or do you just like the name?

But then again I named my son Eli and we live in the South, and people STILL will call his name and say things like " ellie?" or "el-i" I mean seriously, Eli is not an uncommon name, at least I didnt think so.

PS: I had a student last year who was named Siobhan Rose..totally adorable irish little girl...she fit her name to a T...

That was exactly what I thought of, too! :D DD is on a Go Potty Go kick right now. I am sure it is too obscure to really matter, though.

We have a boy and a girl, so we used our top names already. If I am pregnant with our third (IF!!) I like these names:

Maeve Katherine
Margaret Katherine
James Richard

The middle names have family significance. Ideally we would love to use them as first names, but using Katherine would give our potential daughter the initials "KY". Not is this lifetime! I like the name Richard (DH's father) but I don't care for any nicknames and lets face it, kids will call him "Dick".

Marisa BELIVE ME i KNOW BECAUSE of my name try telling people your name is not karen but koren and then pronounce it LOL so ashling I don't think will be too difficult.
Kristen I think I like the way you say it is suppose to be spelled it would somewhat clear up the pronunceation of the name (Aisling)
pokadot both Dh and I are part Irish but no it does not have specail meanng just don't want a common name and there are a bunch of Emma's, ava'a and ella's in our area very common here in maryland and we are 20 min away from baltimore.

Yes, behindthename says it's the female form of Aali.

Interesting. From Wiki:
"Her name means "Highest, Most Exalted, The Best" in Arabic. In Hebrew her name means ascent and is not used as a name."

Gabrieli is a surname and means "The Gabriels" in Italian. I'd use Gabrielle or Gabriella instead.

Can you find a name that's less common, but use the traditional spelling? I'm afraid that some of the spellings that you are using is going to lead to a lifetime of grief for your child.

For instance, my half sister is Harmony. Now, it's not a very common name, yet no one has trouble with the spelling or pronunciation.

DHs middle name is Mathew. With one T. Now, it's a family name and goes back many generations that they can trace. I love the name, however, I think it's only place is going to be a middle name (if we have another boy), because I don't want my child to constantly be having to correct people - and that spelling is and has been on the SS list, however, it's not as popular as Matthew. Another reason is I don't want people to think I don't know how to spell. :p

No, Aisling is an Irish name that is becoming more popular. Ashling is the Americanized, phonetic spelling of the real name. ;)

I don't really see how spelling it Gabrieli would prevent people from calling her Gabby. I mean, I think the risk is the same whether you call her Gabrielle or Gabriella. Although I think you could immediately refer to her as Elle or Ella and people would use that instead.

Re: the Italian origin, well anyone who speaks Italian or has studied the romance languages. But that aside, it's akin to naming your kid Smiths or Williams... could be done, but sort of odd IYKWIM.

MichelleRenee
07-10-2008, 07:40 AM
I don't think spelling the name Emilene instead of Emmaline will stop people from using Emma as a nickname because most people won't see or notice the different spelling. In my family we have several kids with name that have "assumed" nicknames but the moms made it clear that she didn't want those nicknames used, so they haven't been used. (Anthony is not Tony, Gabriella is not Gabby). So I say spell it however you want, but choosing a different spelling to avoid a nickname may not work unless you actually ask people not to use that nickname.

We got some very negative reactions from DH's family on the name Aliyah last night. We went through hell when we picked DS's name (Tristan) and some family members still won't call him by his actual name. Unfortunately even if we keep the name a secret until she is born our families would still react the same whether they knew the name beforehand or not. I would never tell someone that a name they love is ugly or stupid. It only took them 10 minutes to totally ruin the name for us.

polkadot
07-10-2008, 07:56 AM
michelle renee- that sucks...sorry they ruined it for you...but you say that some of them dont even call Tristan by his name so maybe it wont matter and you will still name her that. What do they call him, if they dont call him by his name? Just wondering, thats so odd. I hate when people say things like that...I mean they were allowed to name their children you should be able to do the same...

MichelleRenee
07-10-2008, 08:31 AM
Well, my dad calls Tristan "Rocky" and other family members on my side follow along with that. MIL calls him "Tris" which is just a shortened version of his name and I don't mind it much, except for the fact that she repeatedly reminds us that she calls him that because she doesn't like the full name.

We did have a few family members calling him "Mikey Jr." after DH, which at first they did to avoid saying his actual name, but now they say it's because he looks so much like DH.

We have our own pet names for him, mostly "Trister" which stemmed from me calling him Mister Trister. BIL and SIL have started calling him Trister as well, which only bugs me because I feel like that is my special name for him, ya know?

So he is 20 months old and that is where we stand on his name. I mostly get good reactions to his name, except from family. I guess my family just sucks.

People who know even a tiny bit of Italian? I mean, it's not exactly a dead language. I didn't have to look it up to know it was the plural masculine, nor did a few others just in this thread.

But yeah, if you want to name your daughter the plural of Gabriel, go for it. Just saying, there's a couple singular, feminine versions of the name as well.

I love the list of French names that Dionysia linked, esp Juliane and Margot.

Also, I may have missed this, but is there a reason you want a french name? They are very beautiful, but few of them go with Liam (it's just so Irish). Kinda like naming one child Vladimir and the other one Mary - just from two different cultures. Take it from a mom of two toddlers, you will be saying their names together 2,00 times a day.

Also, I am almost positive Roisin is an Irish name. Again it's beautiful, unique, but may prove difficult for you child.

Kristin has a good point.

I'm not one for names that are too matchy, but it might be jarring to have a sibling set with different name backgrounds.

mamax2 I loved the name Amelie, too, but went with Amelia. Maybe your DH would be more amenable to Amelia?

I'd have to get him amenable to having a third child first :p;)

I don't see why any of you need your husbands input on your name selection:p:p - you should do what I did.

We got into raging fights on both nights that I went into labor. I'm sure the fights started my labor. Anyway, when you wake up your husband and say, "I'm going to the hospital to have MY baby. Do you think you can trouble yourself to listen for DS if he wakes up?" your husband will become instantly contrite and basically give you anything you want ;).

That's how I got to name both my kids - although I did let him chose the middle names. We had been previously unable to agree on any names.

The problem is that when we are lucky enough to have a third I'm going to have to get the timing right on when to start the fight, otherwise he'll catch on.:p

and what did you choose for names?:)
I feel he should have some input considering I'm not budging on Simone

My husband would be very hurt if I referred to our baby as "MY baby" and then went on to just choose a name without him.

Oh, come on. I'm clearly kidding. It's not like I picked names he hated, he was just more amenable to names I liked because her realized he was being a total jerk when I was 9 months pregnant.

And he did get to pick the middle names, and I have to admit I still wince when I hear my daughters - I dislike it that much.

I think Simone would be a beautiful first name - and it goes nicely with Liam. I don't really give my kids names online - but I'll Pm you.

LOL - Kristin!

I pretty much staked my claim on DD's name - she's named after my grandmother and I wasn't conceding on first or middle name. The trade-off was that DH got to name our DD2. I like her name and it does suit her, but it doesn't 'go' with DD1's name. *IF* we have a third, it'll be interesting ;)

eta: ITA, Simone is lovely as a first name - klav ~ are you set on it as a MN only?

I'm not sure DH would go for it as a first name I had tossed it around as a first name but it got moved to the second name love Madeline(how every you spell it) but figured it would not go over well as it being my godmothers name who is the sister to my grandmother who is Simone. plus I was thinking Madeline Simone or Simone Madeline would be a mouthful?
so I settled to have Simone as the middle name. may bring it up again ? humm not sure? still looking for that perfect name going thru books and all but nothing is popping out at me?
