what do you guys think of the name Eiley for a girl? it's a shortened version of eileen and means bright light. pronounced I-lee.
her full name would be Eiley Sophia.
Thanks.

thanks!
dh likes sophia a lot... unfortunately, so does everyone else and their mother... there are at least 3 versions of sophia in the top 100 (sophie, sofia, sophia, and probably a 4th in sofie) and we personally know 4 or 5 kids under the age of 3 with the name... and every time you go to the park or gymboree or another kids place there are at least 2 or 3 sophies/ sophias... so that will never be more than a middle name for us.

Amygrrl - I like the name. It reminds me of my DD's name - extremely close ... her name is Sophie Eileen ... great minds think alike! :) Just as an FYI - we haven't met any Sophie's ... they are all Sophias. I didn't think Sophie was in the top 100.

I have a question for you girls. We think we are having a boy. That's what they told us at our 13.5 week u/s, but they'll confirm next week at my 21 wk u/s. If it is a boy, DH wants him to be a "third" ... I'm not fond of it, but I understand so whatever. I told him only *if* we could use one of these nicknames ... what do you think:
Tripp (short for 'triple')
Trey (3 in French, I think)
Someone told me the other day that Tripp was short for a IV and not a III. I always thought it was short for triple, ie a III. Anyone know? And which do you like best?

I have decided that if I had another little girl, I would name her Kambry. I love that name!
LOVE that name! I wish I would have heard it before naming dd2 (Camdyn), because I would have seriously considered it.
what do you guys think of the name Eiley for a girl?
I really like it. Though I would be prepared for people to assume you said Eileen when they ask you what her name is since they sound so familiar. But if that doesn't bug you, then go for it! Dd1 is named Daytona and I'm constantly having to remind people her name is not Dakota. It's not that big of a deal, but our neighbor's dog is named Dakota so that's what I always think of when I hear the name.

3 in French is trois, pronounced twah. Tres is Spanish for three, pronounced trace. I don't think I've ever heard Tripp as a nn for a III, so if I knew you IRL and you told me his name, I wouldn't get it. I like Trey much better. I've also seen it spelled Trei.

amygrrl - agree with others that people might assume the name is Eileen and not Eiley. I like the name, but the spelling looks strange to my eye. That's probably just me, though. :)
How about Aelish as another consideration? It's pronounced eye-leesh, and an alternate spelling is Eilish.

For girls we came up with Willow and Oakly, what do you think??? I'm not "in love" with them, but I do like them and so far we only have a few that we both "like"
I don't like either, sorry.
Willow to me was an 80s fantasy movie or is the character from Buffy The Vampire Slayer.
Oakl(e)y makes sunglasses.

I agree with most of what Dionysia said--except, in the case of Eiley, I would just name her Kylie or Riley. Eiley sounds unfinished to me.
Oh, and I don't mind the name Willow. To me, it sounds a little hippie, but I can handle a bit of hippie ;). I don't like Oakly at all. Even more than the sunglass reference, it reminds me of poison oak.

I don't like or dislike Willow but I do like Oakly. Willow falls into the category of Raine, Sunny, Summer, etc names in my mind. Not my taste, but I don't hate it either. To me Oakly looks like you forgot the 'e' so I would probably spell it Oakley or Oakleigh. I went to school with a boy named Oakley and I didn't like it all (and still don't) for a boy. But for a girl I think it's cute though I'd be prepared for people to assume you were talking about a boy.

I actually know an Ailee. It's a Chinese name. She went by the Anglicized version of Eileen for a while, but she's gone back to using Ailee. I think it's very pretty.
I'm not sure I would spell it Eiley, because I wouldn't know how to pronounce it. Well, I supose you would have the same trouble with Ailee, also. Not really a big deal.

does your friend pronounce it 'eye- LEE' or 'EYE-lee' or 'ay-LEE' or 'AY-lee'? i'm wondering b/c dd1's name is Malin and probably our biggest annoyance is that b/c dh is chinese, people try to pronounce it 'may-LIN' instead of 'MAY-lin' b/c they are trying to make it more chinese when it's a gaelin/ english name (this includes dh's family as well as non-asian people who still can't grasp that it's not an asian name 18 months after birth - though we DID pick it b/c we felt the sounds would be easy for dh's chinese family to pronounce... other names, like Avery, they just couldn't say at all).
anyway, i really like the Ailee spelling as well, but i worry about the syllable emphasis driving us nuts.
SiValleySteph
10-11-2007, 02:14 PM
does your friend pronounce it 'eye- LEE' or 'EYE-lee' or 'ay-LEE' or 'AY-lee'?
She pronounces it like EYE-lee. Just like Eileen, without the "n." Well, really both syllables pretty evenly. I have a hard time with emphasis, though, so I might not be getting it right. I don't think it's eye-LEE, though.
So you pronounce Malin, MAY-lin? I would have thought it was Muh-lynn. Not Chinese pronounciation, just because that's how I've always thought the name was pronounced. Of course, if I met your daughter, I would try to pronounce it however she/you told me to pronounce it.
Not excatly related, I just met a girl who was MAY-uh, not My-uh because it was a similar sounding Chinese name. It took me a few tries to get it right.
I'm really not the best pronouncer! :)
amygrrl
10-11-2007, 04:44 PM
yup... there are actually multiple correct pronounciations for malin since there's an english, gaelic, and norweigen (or some country up there) version.. and actually, i think it's on the list of top 10 names in norway... MAL-in (like allen) or muh - LYN or the way we pronounce it. the funny thing is may - LYN is not one of the correct ones. folks like to pronounce it almost like it's one of those hyphenated chinese names.... in fact, fil sent out an email to all the entended family when she was born announcing that her name was Mei-lin  (and yes, we had told him repeatedly the name, pronounciation and spelling). we get all kinds of people trying to say it all funky and make it way more 'exotic' than it is. i have feeling we'll run into that with eiley as well, but given our last name (poor english translation of a chinese name from immigation that is the actual past tense of a curse word) that the IL's refuse, the issues with the first name seem pretty small.

Did you give your daughter a Chinese name, too? My son has a Chinese name, also, picked by my FIL and GFIL, so they are happy to send that out. They still call him Lucas, though, because he doesn't answer to his Chinese name. :)
We also have a poor translation of our last name. Well, not translation, excatly, but it's not the proper pinyin. :D It causes some confusion because even Chinese speakers don't necessarily recognize it as Chinese. :)

Regarding Willow & Oakley. I suggested Willow to DH for a girl he likes it, but I don't think I'm wild about it...I think that there was a fairy in Harry Potter named Willow & that's all i can think of. Oakley is kinda nice - unique. An old family surname in my family is Oakes and that's my nephew's middle name (grandma was allowed to choose!).
I'd really like to give my grandma a namesake if we were to have a girl, but her name is Isabella, which is supper popular right now. Are there any variations that anyone knows of that's not as popular. One thought would be to name her Isabella and call her Ella.
No, we don't know what we're having right now, so will have to pick one name for each to be safe!

We are having another baby in November, and we are stuck on boy names (we have a couple of girl names that we really like). So far our top contenders are:
Finn
Charles (Charlie)
both with Patrick as a middle name, but we aren't 100% right now with either one. Any thoughts on those names or suggestions for others?
mcgwigan - I don't have any suggestions, but my friend had a similar situation. Her mom's name is Emma and she always wanted to name her daughter that - of course, it is super popular right now! They just named her Emma anyway. They figured it is still a family name and even if she knows a lot of Emmas, she has some history to her name.

SiValleySteph - the whole chinese name things is sort of a touchy subject. initially when we were pregnant with our dd who was stillborn, we asked them to pick a chinese name. then she was stillborn and they didn't pick one, even though we named her. kind of hurt our feelings. with malin, we just didn't bring it up again and dh is supposed to pick the chinese name, which i actually think is probably more appropriate since his dad picked his chinese name and not his grandparents. but dh has been lazy about it. i need to kick him in the butt to do it.

I don't know how DH and I are ever going to agree on another name!! With DS it was the first name that came into my head and DH loved it so it stuck with this one we can't agree on a thing! To add to the whole mess, my grandparents are Spanish only speakers they have a hard enough time with Aidan I don't know that they would be able to pronounce anything I like
But here is what we have spinning around
Selah Grace
Isabella (bella) Grace but I know it's way to popular right now
Sarah
Riley
Avery
Ryan but we already have an Aidan so I think a lot of people might assume we have two boys???
Dylan Michael

Mickey I like Avery, but I would assume it was a boy because of Charlotte's web! I think it' so cute when little girls have boy names, but I am sure it will get old being ask about it their entire life!
emmjay I agree with Leslie, Charles Patrick. We might be using Patrick for our middle name as well, it was a possible first name, but I am due to close to St. Patrick's Day and that is just to cheesy for me!!
We like using family names so we are limited.
Boys Names
Truman (DH likes this one)
William (Liam)
Girls Names

amygrrl, I'm very sorry your ILs did not give a Chinese name for your 1st DD. :(
DH's family does a generational name, so any siblings of DS will have the same 1st character for thier name. DH and his cousins all have the same 1st characer - Jian - "to step up on to", "to walk on."
DS's Chinese name is SiQi - Think Different or Unusual Thought.
Chinese names are fun to pick out since they are meaning based (as well as what sounds good) :).

SiValleySteph - thanks... the whole IL thing is a whole seperate thread that probably needs to be in emotional support...
but yeah, i think they do the same thing in dh's family only it's generational by family. so within his family, the kids all have the same first character, but it's different than cousins... although our kiddos are the only grandchildren at this point, so if we did want the cousins to share it, they'd all have to go along with what we picked. dh's is chia-ming which means something like brilliant light or brilliant moonlight (he's been told a few different things).
initally, he wanted to do something that meant 'amazing hair' for dd b/c, well... check out the avatar... that's her at about 14 months with all that hair! at our u/s at about 30 wks with this pregnancy they started talking about how they could see the baby's hair so it looks like we're having another hairy monkey... so maybe we'll do 'amazing hair' and fabulous hair' :D
is there a website where you can look up the meanings to determine what the chinese name would be?
SiValleySteph
10-12-2007, 11:22 AM
"Amazing hair" - I love it! :D She does have beautful hair.
I like this website for Chinese:

Michelle, one of my friends has a little girl named Rhyan.
We're never going to agree on a name. I want something short-4-5 letters, nickname proof, and possibly a bible or saint name. DH shoots down all of the names I throw out. He really likes Gabriel, but it just makes me think Gabe like Gabe Kotter:p and I don't want anyone calling my kid Gabe. yuck.

Noel-our wedding photographer's husband is Noel. I had never met or heard of a Noel (like mole, like you said) before that other than Noel Gallagher! I would rather Noah or Nolan, I think.
Michelle, I'm torn on Ryan for a girl. I remember that I really liked it when I was pregnant with Luke. I'm sure teachers and the like will mistake her for a boy the first day of school for the rest of her life. BUT, babies grow into their names and once someone knows that's her name, it will no longer be a "boy's name". Tough call. Aidan and Ryan are similar, though. Do you mostly call him A.J. or Aidan? That might make a difference.

I don't think it's too wierd. They are similar, but I don't think they're too close to throw out. I personally know more female Ryan's (a Ryan, a Rhyan and a Rianne) than I do male, so I don't automatically assume somebody named Ryan is male, though that usually it is the case.

Gabriel was our boy name. My DH loved it also and it took a while for it to grow on me. I had the same issue as you...I love Gabriel, but hate Gabe. (In general I hate nicknames.) What sold me though is I have a little boy in my class at school named Gabriel and he goes by Gabriel. No one thinks to call him Gabe. So it can be done. If our baby was a boy, we would have just insisted that his name is Gabriel NOT Gabe.

For a boy we are leaning towards Nathan, Andrew or Mason...no meaning behind these names, just like them.

Just speaking a bit from experience here... I'm Karen. My cousin (and like second brother) is Darren. My next door neighbor was Aaron. I can't tell you the number of times someone would call one of our names and we would all come running. Having a Tracey and a Mac(e)y in the house could get really annoying after a while (no matter how pretty the name is).

Yup already thought about that. With such an age difference btw me and the baby (29 years) we think we will be able to figure out who is being called, an adult vs a child. In your situation you were all about the same age so yes I would see a major issue.

Thank you ladies for your input. I've loved Catalina for a long time, I was just wondering what it would be perceived like.
I was born and raised in Argentina, so many times I don't "get" what people think of when they hear certain names.

We're trying too. Maybe we'll end up in the same preggers group again. I really like the name Catalina. It's something you don't hear a lot, and you could always call her Cat for short, which I think is cute too.

Hey Ladies!
We have a few girls names lined up, and I think Jane is the front runner right now (DD #1 middle name is Jane).
Does anyone have any ideas of a way that we could lengthen Jane? I would like Jane to be her nickname (if we have another girl).
Or, does anyone have any ideas of names that go well with Abigail? I thought that there was a website that had names that went well together.
If we end up having a boy, it will be Stanley, because DH insists. Whatever, I'm not a fan, but we will come up with a cool nickname for him (like Stasu-the polish version of little stan).
Thanks!

- Mara

Need opinions please. We want something normal but not overly used. Middle names must start with an M, just a thing both of our boys already have. I am totally open for opinions if anyone has any other ideas too. Here are a few names we are thinking right now, what do you think?
Macey Madalyn
Makenzie Mae
Rylee or Rylie Madalyn

Rebecca Marie
Rebecca Madeline/Madeleine
Katherine (nn Kay) Marie
Lily Mae
Ruby Mae
Alison Marie
Michaela (nn Kayla) Mae
Elise Marie
Sophie Mae/May
Louisa Marie
Helen/Elaine Marie (nn could be Ellie or Laney)

Disclaimer - I have a "creative" spelling for my name and I absolutely hate it, it's been a PITA my entire life having to correct people, and as a result, I'm biased against alternate spellings for names.
That said - Mackenzie, Riley, and Madeline are all VERY popular/trendy names right now (Michaela/Mikayla too). I'd consider them all "overly used" (and only Madeline would I consider a "normal" name, though not the way you spelled it).
I'm also biased against all "Mac" names, as it literally means "son of". Seems odd to name a girl Son of Kenzie. But considering recent trends, clearly most people don't share my opinion on that matter.
Macey will forever remind me of the department store. It's pretty, I've known a couple darling little girls with the name, but it immediately makes me think of the department store whenever I hear it.

I need help, we are exploring other options for middle names. We are loving Macey as the first name right now and like the ring names for a middle that end with "elle". Macey _______
2 syllable names:

Bump! :D We found out last Friday that we are having identical twin girls so we are on the hunt for names that go well together, but do not rhyme!
Here is my list so far:
Brooklyn
Claire
Emily
Madelyn
Hailey
I really love Madelyn and Hailey (and DH likes them both too) but I am just so indecisive! It's such a permanent thing! With our DS (Lucas), we just knew that Lucas was the perfect name for him but I'm just not quite at that point yet! Plus I am on the lookout for middle names! My mom and I are both Marie, which could work with Hailey, but I'm just not completely sold!
Any ideas? :)

baby lust- I really like Brooklyn and Claire. not sure why but I think they really complement one another and will allow for different personalities. as far as middle names go- I like Marie with Brooklyn. not sure about Claire though.
for us- we are having a boy. DD is Mallory. our last name starts with an L, is two syllables and ends with an S. Middle name must be Neal. this is what we have so far and I am TOTALLY open to honest opinions.
Declan Neal L
Mason Neal L
Cooper Neal L
Keegan Neal L
Colin Neal L
Finnegan Neal L
any and all feedback is welcome!
thank you.

shoulda, Thanks for the opinions! :)
I think all the names that end in N sound run together with Neal. Not that you couldn't do it because how often are full names recited (in response to "what's his name?" questions, kid is in trouble, graduation, marriage...) You get my point. So you could definitely do it, but I think first names that end in a different letter would sound better. That said, I love Mason! Colin is cute too! We had such a hard time thinking of boy names this time around, so I am no help, but those are my opinions! :) Good luck deciding!! :D

Out of your list I like:
Declan Neal L
Cooper Neal L
Colin Neal L
I didn't realize it but the "n" names do kind of run together. When you yell out the full name it might sound like "Collinneal" or "Declanneal" I just like these first names the best. I really like Cooper, it's my son's middle name.

I like Gavin a lot.. like everyone else said, Jackson is SO popular now. And if I am remembering your first son's name correctly, I think Gavin is a nice pairing with it. I've only heard one Gavin since my DS was born, so I think it will be nice to have it still be sort of unique.
Good Luck!
Right now, DH & I are debating girl names. DH loves Fiona. I am really liking Nora. The only issue I have with Fiona is that I'm wondering if too many people think of it along the lines of Shrek.

Well, we had a "boy" name picked out, and now I am not sure. DH and I both love Peter. But we told my parents, and my dad's reponse was that we should be aware that Peter is slang for penis, and he might get teased a lot (apparently he works with a "Peter" who totally hates his name for this reason). I never heard this before in my life. DH says he heard it, but he didn't think it was all that common. Have you heard this piece of slang before? It is still in use? Argh.

lcarlson- Well, I have a Jackson (so obviously I love it), but let me tell you, I was pushing HARD for Gavin from the time we found out he was a boy (at 20 weeks) until his birth. Dh wouldn't bite though - he has a cousin Gavin, plus he really wanted to give our son the same initials as his father (JJK), So Jackson James he became. I have heard Jackson around these boards quite a bit, but have yet to meet another in the town we live in (outside of Boston). There are none in my daughter's preschool either, but there is one Gavin. Both are great choices.

My DH is named Peter, so I love the name. However, he'll tell you about the teasing he got as a kid b/c of his name and is VERY particular about what we name our kids as a result. Anything with a potentially bad connotation (no matter how remote) is out.

Thanks for everyone's input. I want to stay away from the really popular names but it seems like those are the only names that I really like. The names that are unusual are always shot down by DH. Maybe I will get lucky and this baby will be a little girl and I won't have to worry about the boy name.
Fiona - I think this is a cute name. I didn't even realize that the princess in Shrek is named Fiona until someone else mentioned it. I did think of the singer Fiona Apple.
Peter - I don't particularly love this name but I didn't think of "boy parts" when I heard the name. I guess you could say the same thing about "Willie".
Isn't it crazy that you have to anaylze the name choice so much to make sure DC will not be made fun of.

Emily Claire is very pretty! We're thinking of Marie as a middle name, too, for DD2. It's my confirmation name, and DD1 has my middle name (Lynn) as her middle name. I'd agree that both Marie - and Lynn - are common filler names. I think Claire is a good middle name because it's one syllable. (Plus, I just love Claire!)
We have narrowed down our names to:
Erin Marie
Megan Julia
and then we'll decide when we see the baby - that is, if we don't change our minds a hundred more times before we head to the hospital!
Julia is a family name we want to use but I don't like how it flows with Erin. So if we go with Erin, we'll go with Marie as the middle name. We would really like to find a "D" name we like to go with Julia, because DH's initials are DJ and he was called that as a kid. If we would have had a boy the name would have been Daniel Joseph. But the only D name we really like is Danielle, and we know someone named that. Anyone have any other suggestions for D names? (We've seen a lot but I'm always open to more suggestions.)
I had no idea Peter was slang - guess I'm naive. Our oldest nephew is Peter and I really like the name.
I also like Fiona, Nora, and Gavin!

Hi! I haven't posted for a very long time, but now we're pregnant and in search of "the perfect name." I love reading others' name choices and hope to get a feel for which of our top two we should go for... I love both names, but we're holding off on telling our family/friends IRL until the birth and for some reason, I'm terrified that either name won't go over well... So which would you choose:
Caroline Elizabeth
Charlotte Suzanne or Charlotte Elizabeth
Suzanne is a family name, and I'm hoping Caroline could honor a male family member: Carey. What do you think? Too much of a stretch?
Also, our surame is Hazard and gets quite enough jokes as it is. :) I don't want to unwittingly name our daughter something that will make the teasing even worse - so let me know if you notice a glaringly obvious tease that I might have missed!
I'd appreciate any suggestions/comments. Thanks in advance! :)

I personally LOVE the use of surnames for first names. Especially Irish ones for girls like McKenna, Delaney, and Quinn. My DH was way more on board for an Irish surname than Siobhan, Sinead, Ciera, Niamh. At least there is no question of the spelling!
I think Finnegan is a great name. I like Finn as a nickname, I agree it doesn't flow that well with Neal as a middle name, but when on earth would you ever refer to a child with their nickname and middle name? My kids nicknames don't go at all with their middle names, but pretty well with their given names.
I would equate the name Finn with "Mike". So I don't think it would be a great stand alone name.

this totally cracked me up and is the reason why I have discounted several other names. Cooper was the lead for a while and all I could think of was Cooper the Pooper and how tormented he would be.

I kind of like the name Mika for a girl. How would you pronounce this if you saw this name? Mee-ka or Mike-a? We would pronounce it mee-ka and I'm wondering if I should spell it Meka or Meeka? Any thoughts on this name?
If I saw "Mika", I would think her name was pronounced "Mike-a".

Delaney isn't Irish.
Delaney is most definitely an Irish surname. It's in my family. And my grandparent's were right off the boat.
"Delaney is a surname derived alternately from an Old English word for "alder grove," or the Irish surname Ó Dubhshláine, "Dubhshláine" being a combination of the Gaelic words "dark" and "defiance.""

I knew a Mika in college pronounced "Mee-ka," so that's the way I would pronounce it.

My friend's daughter is Mika. Mee-ka. It's a Japanese name.
I have another friend named Mieke (my age), who is also a Mee-ka. I'm not sure of the origin of that name.
I might have thought it was Mike-a at one point, but not since I know my friends. :)
ETA - My friend (whose daughter is Mika) told me she's been running into a number of little girls named Mika these days, so maybe it's not so uncommon anymore? Of course, we are in the SF Bay Area, so this might not apply, say in Indiana or something. :)
My friend named her daughter Mikka (Mike-a).

I would have said "Mee-ka." I think "Mike-a" when it is spelled like this: Micah. Had a friend in college w/ that name & I thought it was pretty.
I would pronounce it Mi-ka, like the singer. I didn't realize it was a girl's name. I've only seen as a boys name, Mika or Micah.

I would pronouce it Mee-ka, but I'm also familiar with it as a Japanese name.
I knew a "mee-ka" in college and she spelled it Micah. I think it's a pretty and unique name.

I would pronounce it Mike-a. I babysat a little girl years ago that was named Mika, but I can't remember how it was spelled. I suppose any way you spell it, it is bound to be mispronounced, so go with the spelling you like the most! :)

My etymological source was behindthename.com.
FWIW, Wiktionary says we're both right:

Etymology
Norman baronial surname from a place in France, Old French del aunaie "from the alder grove". In Ireland an anglicization of Gaelic Ó Dubhshláine "descendant of Black (dubh) + Challenge (slán)".

starxed, I like all your girls' names! Classic and timeless, IMO. Isabel is a little bit over-popular around here, but I still like it. :)
For the boys, Coleton sounds... I don't know -- a little made-up, to be honest. Is it a southern thing? Out of all of them, Gabriel is my favorite -- a name that will grow with him as he gets to be an adult.

shouldaeloped - what about Finnian/Finian? That is an Irish first name and you could use Finn (or Fin) as the nickname. We considered that if DD ended up being a boy. I think Finian Neal sounds nice!

It might be a southern name. I knew a few Coltons in Texas.

We have some Coltons up here too (ND)... maybe it's a midwest thing?
I too really like Gabriel for the boy name, and all the girl names are great! Good luck choosing! :)

You know, now that I see it spelled Colton I'm sure I've heard of it before. But it wouldn't fly around here in Sopranos country. ;)

For Amelia, we would call her Mia for short. We are still brainstorming. Thanks for everyone's opinions.
Coleton may be a southern thing, we do live in the south (although I'm from California). I just like the nickname "Cole".

We are trying to come up with names that wouldn't have easy nicknames (just because I'm not really a fan, if I name my child something, that is what I want them to go by). For example, Nicolas - Nick, Jonathan - Jon or Jonny, get me drift. Can anyone think of anything with Ashton? Thanks!

We are completely stuck on girl's name, anybody want to chime in?
Our top contenders are:
Charlotte
Madelyn
Madison
Ainsley
Middle names would be Victoria Marie or Marie Victoria. Family tradition to have 2 middle names ;)
I want it to "go" with DS's name, Logan, which I think they all do. Ainsley is th eonly one I can't think of a nickname for. I like the idea of a Charlie or Maddy..so that's not an easy way to decide!
