good to see everyone in the new thread. :) its so fun to see the new pictures of everyone's babies.

it looks like my Mother's Day picnic is going to be rained out. :( Not sure what we'll do instead.

today Joey was the boy who would not nap. He did ok in the morning although nothing beats the 3hr naps he took Monday and Tuesday morning. I know that after 2hrs of awake time he needs a nap but sometimes he won't go down. What do you do at that point? I'm out of ideas - feed him, rock him, put him in the swing, give him the pacifer, walk with him, pat his back, put him in the crib to watch his mobile that he loves (but only keeps him happy and occupied for a few minutes).

Jane - When Jacob won't nap Iusually lay down on the couch with him on my chest. He usually falls asleep within minutes. The hard part is transitioning him to the swing or bassinet.

Being the newest mom on the April mom block... what is your babies sleep schedule? How has it changed over the first weeks/months or their lives? I feel like all Ainsleigh does is sleep. We have been trying to keep her up more during the day so she sleeps more at night but it is so hard to keep her up when all she wants to do is sleep.

Sevilla Awesome stash! :) Would you mind letting me know how you like your BumGenius (is this their new one?)? I've been thinking of ordering one to try it out, but I'm not sure my sleep-depraved brain quite comprehends their sizing... And thanks for the links!! So far I've been buying new dipes, thinking that I'll save them all for # 2 (whenever that will happen... ;) ), but I might check out these diaperswappers! So far, I've liked www.nickisdiapers.com and www.jennifersclothdiaperboutique.com
Oh, another question: what do you do for wipes when you're out and about?

MMH I would cherish these early days when she just wants to sleep! :) Anders was a difficult one to get to sleep from day 1, so I cannot really say I'm an expert, but they become more alert as days go by, so don't worry. My LC said to just make sure that they feed every 3 hours! She is adorable!!

Oh, and HAPPY MOTHER"S DAY, everyone! :)

i love seeing the pics of everyone's babies! They're so cute :).

Jane: Hope you feel better soon!

MMH: In a few weeks A will start to 'wake up' more and have more defined awake times. Like DS now will be up for 1-2 hours at a time, and then sleep for 1-3 hours. Enjoy the sleepy newborn stage, b/c once they're able to see more of the world around them it's harder for them to fall asleep easily.

uskiku: I like the bumGenious so far! It fits DS really well (we fold it down to be size XS and he's 10 lbs., so i'm not sure how it would fit a 6 lber like they say). The stretch tabs are really nice and i like the microsuede inner lining. Mine came with a cottonbabies insert that works well. And i like how the pocket opening is concealed instead of being open like on FB. They are more expensive to buy new, and there aren't *that* many used yet (though there are a few here and there). But they have great resale value so even if i end up not liking it i won't be out that much $$.

I bought the majority of DS's diapers used (except his prefolds)--i just recently ordered a few new covers and the new BG b/c MIL gave us the $$. i'm planning to save them all for babies #2 and beyond too. I only buy things in really good/like new condition, and a lot of times people sell things that they just tried once or twice and didn't like. It really does save a lot of $$ to buy used if you can--especially with something like FB or Kissaluvs. Like i bought 2 used FB from http://www.cottonbabies.com for $10 each, and they look new (and on the diaperswappers forum there are a TON of FB always being sold for about that much). The Kissaluvs i got used were $7 each (and looked brand new). So if $$ is a concern for you used can be a great way to go. MDC also has a trading forum that has a lot of good deals. But i know some people really like to have their diapers bought new, and that works well too. It's fun to figure out which diaper sites offer the best deals, yk? :)

I'm still recovering from whatever I had over the weekend but feeling a bit better. Joey has been really good during the day for the past few days - minimal fussing and going down for naps easily. But he's awake for a few hours every night from about 1am-6am (varies a bit every night). I've gotta do something about that. We go back to the pediatrician Thursday for his 2 month visit, I can't wait to find out what he weighs now.

Misty - cute photos. I love that last one with the dog! :)

I took Kaylie on the plane with me while DS stayed home with DH. I'm so tired today...can't party like the old days that's for sure. Oh, Kaylie has been sleeping 8hrs+ for the last week or so!!! She'll then eat and keep sleeping too. Knock on wood...now she'll probably wake up every 2 hours tonight! But she did go 9 hrs last night. Wahoo! 8pm to 5am. Then ate and back to sleep until 7...brought her into bed with me and she's still there sleeping at almost 10am... traveling must have worn her out!

Jane - Glad you're feeling better. We were updating at the same time yesterday. It took me a minute to figure it out, but I wondered why things were moving before I actually moved them. :)

All the pics are so cute! I can't belive all the April babies are here already!

I put a brand new outfit on Marin this morning and it's already in the laundry. When she poops it's been going up her back and on her clothes. Yuck!

QOTD - What is everyone doing for birth control? I had my 6 week check-up this am. My doctor told me what was available, but I hadn't thought about it. Poor DH is so lonely! Since we are exclusively BF, she said we could use the progesterone only pill. She also mentioned the patch and IUD. I left without anything since I need to think about it and there's no rush.

I love all the cute pictures! :) Hope everyine had a happy Mother's Day.

What is your babies sleep schedule? How has it changed over the first weeks/months or their lives - Jacob was avery sleepy baby in the beginning. I had to wake him to eat during the day and he was always falling asleep while eatting. He is now awake for several hours a day and is sometimes awake for 2-2.5 hours at a time. The past two days he has been sleeping more but I think it is because he just went thru his 6 week growth spurt. He has started falling asleep during his night feedings again. I'm pretty lucky in that he eats around 9-10pm and then sleeps until 2:30-3am or so and then sleeps again until 6:30am ish.

QOTD - What is everyone doing for birth control? Well we haven't DTD yet. My 6 week apointment is in 20 minutes. We will use condoms though. I don't want to go back to hormonal BC since I have been off it for four years or so. I would chart to avoid but since it's not reliable when BFing we will stick with condoms.

--
Well my 6wk PP checkup is in 20 minutes. I'm assuming we will get the go ahead to DTD which DH is looking forward to. :o Jacob is doing well. We are still supplementing and probably will continue to for awhile until he no longer needs it. He is in 0-3 month clothes and has even outgrown some of them. Oh this morning he had his first major blowout. It was so gross! To top it off, the wipe warmer ran out of wipes and I had to run get his diaper bag for more wipes. Poop was everywhere! It was completely up his back and all over the blanet I put on the changing pad to keep the cover clean. Yuck!

QOTD - We haven't DTD either, since I am not quite 3w PP, but my Dr. already prescribed me the mini pill. We are planning to BF exclusively, but I DO NOT want to take any chances on getting pg again! I haven't started the pills yet, but will around 6 weeks.

I hear everyone on the pooping. I put Ben in at least 3 outfits a day!

Apparently I still can't eat. :( But once my stomach is empty I feel alright.

Jennifer - that explains why CC logged me out at one point. I know I've logged in before when you were updating and found it thoroughly confusing for a minute. :p

Baby's sleep schedule - first 2 weeks he ate and slept and that was it. Weeks 3 and 4 he was more alert but still very sleepy. During week 4 he had a spell where he was up crying during the night for a few hours but he started sleeping better again after a few days (still waking frequently though). Weeks 5-7 were rough - he hit a growth spurt and was eating a lot. But he was becoming more and more alert during his wake time. Now at 8 1/2 wks he's enjoying his playmatt and other toys more but he's back to being awake for awhile every night.

Birth control - progesterone pill. Not sure if what I had at 7wks was AF or a reoccurence of pp bleeding but I don't want to take any chances.

QOTD we have not DTD yet (what a joke that we will EVER have time for that again) but I am going to ask for the mini pill at my checkup tomorrow. A friend was telling me about an IUD. Maybe I will read up on it. All I know is that I do NOT want to get pregnant again so I need something reliable!! The mini pil scares me because I think you have to take it at the exact same time every day and I can not see myself remembering

Sleep schedule during the day it is all over the place. we try to stick to the two hours of wake time rule but it is hard to keep track of when that is while I am taking care of dylan too. at night she usually goes down around 10, sometimes 10:30, sometimes 9:30 and then she will wake up once between then and 6am. Sometimes around 2 sometimes as long as 4:30

I feel like I have no time to post anymore. I think I underestimated how hard two under two would be. I knew Dylan would be really good with the transition but I think I forgot how unpredictable newborns are. Katie is definitely more high needs and fussy than Dylan was and I am finding it really hard to adjust to that. He loved the swing and bouncy and I am lucky if she will last 5 minutes in either. I had to let them both cry at different points today for longer than I would like but I simply could not help it. This is a crappy day if you could not tell already. I just feel like Dylan is getting the short end of the stick right now and it makes me feel awful. thank goodness he does not notice most of the time and seems to love his sister. He loves to say her name (KAY-EEEEE) every time she wakes up.

Sal - I could have written your last paragraph. The past couple of days have been neverending and I feel I'm about to lose my mind. Marin won't go in the swing or bouncy either and has to be held ALL the time - the exact opposite of Caden. That's tough when I'm trying to give him attention or get out of the house. Last night she wouldn't go to bed until after 2. She nursed until she fell asleep and as soon as I put her down, she wanted to be held. I don't know how much longer I can go on such little sleep, about 4-5 hours a night. Today all I wanted to do was go to the post office and bank and it's 1:40 and I'll I've done is take a shower. She is taking all of my time and I can't seem to get a break. Between my hormones and lack of sleep, DH is getting the brunt of my bad moods. I just keep telling myself this will get better. :)

Sal & Jennifer - I am so with you both! Ben is going through a growth spurt and eats every 1-2 hours. He is happy during the day for the most part, but grumpy all night. I feel lucky if I get to brush my teeth before lunch time most days! I too just keep telling myself it will get better. I can't believe I thought being a SAHM would be boring. It is harder than I thought! I have SO MUCH respect for moms now.

Sal, Jennifer, Mel - I am with you guys too.

Although I have stopped BFing (still pumping tho) - I was really punching myself that first month, I gave in and decided to take my parents up on their offer and stay at their place. We were all living in one room (DH, DS, and I) but it was nice to have the extra hands around so I could have some alone time, even if it was just to take a nice long hot shower.

I guess I enjoyed it there b/c their house is smaller and I don't feel like I'm running all over the place... my house is humongous, and I can never find anything and whenever I'm upstairs, everything I need is downstairs, just frustsrating.

QOTD - i actually posted a ? about soreness, b/c I've been itching to DTD for the last week but was terrified b/c I was still sore "down there"... but now its not, so I'm thinking of surprising DH tonight... maybe I can feed Logan, put him down and we can have a little alone time ;), he'll be thrilled, haha. He's been bugging me about it since we left the hospital, :)

I just noticed that we got married on the same day. Where did you get married? We had our ceremony and reception at the Adamson House in Malibu. That's great your libido is back. Mine is around her somewhere...just haven't found it it. :) 2 stories is tougher when you have kids. My friend has a townhouse that has 4 levels and she goes crazy up and down those stairs all day...it's a good work out at least. We have a tiny place and it's driving me nuts...so many toys and so much gear! Thank goodness we're moving into our own house next month....with a yard. Yahoo!

Sal, Jennifer
Hey fellow RO's. So Kaylie has been sleeping pretty great for the most part...she slept from my parent's house to the airport, the entire time at the airport, on the plane all the way until we got into the car to drive home. It was just a 1 hr flight, but can't beat that! Anyway, Jack has been driving me nuts! He's totally testing me right now. Screaming that girl scream, screaming when I put him to bed and waking up around midnight to scream. I'm guessing maybe he just wants more attention, though I've been doing my best to give him lots of time together without the baby hogging the spotlight. Or he could be getting frustrated about speaking or something, though he's learning new words left and right. Or it's probably just that terrible 2 stage he's hitting. But anyway, it's wearing me out!

Sal--sorry to hear Katie seems to be more high needs...maybe she'll be an easier teenager. :) I hear you guys on the old tricks not working... Kaylie does not like the swing at all and will only tolerate the bouncy seat for a bit. She does like to be on her stomach a lot more than jack since I've been trying to put her on her tummy a lot. It helps get the gas out. The doctor said I have to stay away from dairy for the entire week, and so far no huge spit up/barfs. Good and bad news I guess since now I can't have that chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream in the freezer!

mel7dog
Being a SAHM is rarely boring since if they're sleeping you treasure every moment to yourself so much more. And the rest of they day you're busy trying to get 1 thing done. :)

Birth control
I have a prescription for the mini pill, but I haven't gotten it filled yet since I keep forgetting. Last time I was really bad about taking it. Sometimes I wouldn't remember for 3 days! I'll have to be better this time around since no way do I want another kid for at least 2-3 years or more. So we're praticing abstinence for now...poor DH. Maybe I'll surprise him when he gets home from his business trip.

Oh goodness... what has happened to my baby??? Since yesterday Anders has been having nursing marathons when he eats every single hour for 30-40 minutes... We did get two 3-hour stretches of sleep at night though (thank god!). But he is SOOOOO grumpy and unhappy all the time. Is this normal??? Or should I call the doctor? Right now DH has him in the Moby Wrap, but even in the wrap he needs to be soothed/patted every 5 minutes. If this is a growth spurt, how long does it last...?

mel7dog

uskiku - Sounds like the 3w growth spurt to me. My DS started the same thing last Monday at almost 2w and we are just starting to get better now. I heard it lasts about a week. We are already over a week, but it's getting better. I know how frustrating it can be!!

hapa how funny, 6.28 is a good day ;) We got married at the Four Seasons in Carlsbad. The 2 story house thing is getting to me so much that I'm actually considering selling our house and moving to a smaller one... ugh. But YEAH for you, as much as I hate moving (ie packing and unpacking everything) I think its fun and exciting to move to a new place... i wish we were... :)

birth control - Initially I was hoping to get an IUD but I guess we'll discuss that with my OB at my 6 week check up. We've just really relied on condoms, i hated being on any pill.

Just keep up the nursing! All this nursing will increase your supply to keep up with Anders' growing needs. And maybe you'll be lucky...maybe this growth spurt will only last a couple days. Good luck!

Funny how much slower the thread moves now that all the babies are here....those kiddos are a lot of work! But it does get easier once they get onto a more predictible routine/schedule. You can actually get 2 things done in a day instead of just 1 thing. :)

uskiku-I hope that Anders growth spurt only last a couple of days but like hapa said it will increase your milk supply so that is a good thing!

jrsygirl-The twins are so cute. I can't imagine how difficult it was to get a good shot of the two of them together!

birth control-my doctor gave me a prescription for the mini-pill but I am worried because I know I won't remember to take it every day at the same time. IUD and the depo are not really something I am interested and abstinence-HAHA-DH was about to jump me at the doctors office after she said we could go ahead with DTD!!!!

Talk about growth spurts, our twins have been so fussy and chugging formula like there is no business. We probably have the only 6 week old babies on earth that the pediatrician already started cereal in their bottles...granted its a teaspoon but still. They are insane eaters. and formula for twins ain't cheap.

birth control i have my 6 week appt on Friday. Not sure what we're going to do but I'm not anxious to start the pill. I laways gained a ton of weight even on low dose ones. And since I have already lost all my weight I feel good about myself for a change. ..Other than the "twinskin" i have hanging around my belly. gross.

Geesh, it's taken me some time to post because I'm still trying to get the swing of this new mom thing. :) And uskiku, T started a growth spurt (I'm guessing that's what it was) about a week ago at 3 weeks and wanted marathon nursing sessions. Previously I had to wake him to feed every three hours and was lucky if he went 20 minutes. Then he started wanting to nurse every two hours and we'd go for an hour to an hour and a half at a time. He's finally started slacking back off a bit...thank goodness! It took a day or so for my milk to catch up to his needs though.

Guess I need to officially join the new thread:

ceallaigh - adorable photos! Kyra is so cute!

Joey had his 2 month well baby visit. He's doing well - hitting all the milestones. And he gained 2 whole pounds in a month! So he weighs 9lb 10oz now and is 21 7/8 in long. He's in the 20th percentile for height and 10th for weight, but since he only just now weighs what my neice weighed at birth I didn't expect him to be at the top of the charts.

Poor baby got several shots today and cried his little heart out, so now he's napping in the swing.

I've been trying to keep up with all the posts, but like everyone said its been a challenge!:) We're starting to hopefully get a routine going, DD has her last feeding at about 10 pm and will sleep until about 2 am, then wake at about 5:30am. So, I take the 2 am and DH does the 5:30 am. He's been such a great help this past month that he's been home! I have to get used to what it will be like when he goes back to work after Memorial Day.

I'm still supplementing with formula. But I do try to nurse her at least 30 minutes before giving a bottle. Oh and we just put her swing together and boy does she love sleeping in it! Here's a question for everyone, How long do you leave your DD/DS in the swing? I leave DD in there for probably 1-2 hours at a time. At least 2 times a day, is that ok? Hope everyone is doing great!

Sal03

Jane that's great that Joey is gaining so well! The first time they get shots is awful. sounds like you both did okay :)

QOTD unfortunately Katie will not tolerate much time in the swing, but Dylan used to spend hours each day there so obviously I see nothing wrong with it!! :D

ceallaigh glad to see you are doing well. As a RO, it depends on when you ask...today I am doing great because they both napped at the same time all afternoon. I got tons done, relaxed and have dinner in the crockpot. Or you could have asked me yesterday when Katie barely napped all day and I literally cried with relief when DH walked in the door unexpectedly home an hour early. I hate to say it, but more of my days are like yesterday because Katie is pretty high needs. She is a sweet little thing who loves to be held A LOT. I am just not used to this after Dylan would be content anywhere and pass out for hours. thank goodness she is so good overnight. She used to wake up once around 2 now she is even pushing that back to 4:30 so I think she will be sleeping through soon.

I just borrowed Weissbluth's "Healthy Sleep Habits, Healthy Child" to work on getting more consistent naps because I NEED THEM and so does she.

Had my PP checkup yesterday and as for birth control I got a prescription for the mini pill and will probably go on that for the year I will be BFing and then will go back on the regular pill.

QOTD: Joey tends to nap well in the swing so on many days he spends several hours in it. I guess the longest at a time would be the two mornings in a row that he took 3hr naps in the swing. I have a cushion in there for his head, I think it makes it more comfortable for him.

Sal - the shots were pretty awful. He got hepatitis last time but this time there were 4 shots! Poor baby. He howled and then zonked out.

Gin - The swing is the only place I can put Harrison and know that he will be happy/nap. He's been on a "crib strike" for the last several nights, so he sleeps his first night shift (about 3 hours) in the swing and then at least 1 other nap there during the day. I "heart" his swing :p

Just checking in. I am reading along but don't get much time to post since we are having sleep issues here too. For the past two days Jacob has not slept more than 40 minutes at a time during the day. I can get him to sleep pretty easily it's just keeping him asleep. He does not want to be put down at all. It's getting frustrating because I would like some time where I don't have to hold him. Besides trying to get him to sleep and stay asleep all the time he is eating ALL day long. Maybe last week wasn't his growth spurt and this week is. Who knows... So I finally got him down in his bassinet at 9:30 and he has been there for an hour. Unfortunately I have to get him out by 11:00 because he has an appointment at 11:30. I so wish I could cancel but it is too late for that. :(

Oh, Jacob doesn't sleep much in his swing. I try but he always wakes up. Most of the time he sleeps on me, next to me or in the bassinet if I am lucky.

swing - It's put away. Marin hates it and Caden wants to play/climb in it, but we may try it again in another month or so.

mini-pill - for those of you taking it, how do you know when to start? I had my doctor call in a prescription and forgot to ask.

We are just starting to get Caden into the idea of potty-training. We bought him a potty and I took these this morning. The Sesame Street characters will have to find a new home before we can try the potty out for real!

Our Announcements... a draft anyway

DH's bossman's wife does graphic design and did our wedding invitations and offered to do our annoucements, here is the draft, you can't tell from the pic, but the pic of DS is kind of glittery hazy, very cool effect and the ribbon is hand glued... she does awesome work. We're gonna find a different sleeping picture probably, she was just working with the pics we sent out in the beginning.

Before you say yes, consider this: For a number of reasons (most of which have to do with my boss being a CC lurker, she's not a registered member but she lurks a lot) I will not be able to reveal a lot of information about myself and will not be able to post DS photos. Let me know if that's okay with you all.

A couple of thoughts on thread topics:

Sleep My new DS sleeps on and off all day (for about 45 minutes on average). I give him a bath at 7pm then do some cluster feedings between then and 9:30pm (while he sleeps on and off on me or DH). After the last feeding (sometime between 930 and 10pm), I put him down and he'll sleep till 2am or 3am (one time he slept till 4:30 and I was so happy)!!!! I have one confession though: I put him down on his stomach for that long stretch   I feel very guilty but he was driving me crazy waking up every 1.5 to 2 hours all night and he's been able to lift his head very well from about 2 weeks so one night (just before 8 weeks) I tried the stomach sleeping and he slept till morning! I am NOT advocating this by the way, just sharing my guilt. Anyone else guilty of this?

ROs I'm an RO too and I can relate to the feeling of going nuts. After almost a year at home, I'll be returning to work soon so I'm trying hard to spend lots of time with the kids now but I'm at the end of my rope by the time DH gets home and sometimes I take it out on him :( We have hired a nanny and she's a big help but I still love to do a lot of things myself.

Swing First DS loved it and slept in it for hours... we're lucky if second DS stays 20 minutes! After about 10-15 minutes of swinging happily, he'll doze off and then let out a blood curdling scream

QOTD: What parenting book are you reading that you would highly recommend? With first DS, I read a lot (WTETFY, Baby Whisperer, Healthy Sleep Habits, etc) so I decided not to read much the second time around since I learned so much from those books. But then a friend recommended Brazelton's Touchpoints and I decided to flip through but got HOOKED from the first page. I LOVE IT. It is so helpful... if you're looking for a good one, here's the one to get.

Okay, now that I've rambled for so long, I need to go sleep while the little one is asleep.

nothing much going on here. We have to go to a cookout for my former boss tonight (he's leaving for a new job). Luckily the person hosting lives nearby so we don't have to go far. Not sure how Joey will handle it though, he doesn't tend to be the most pleasant baby in the early evenings. He's taking a good nap now though so that ought to help.

DH took Joey on a long walk this morning and I ran around cleaning like a madwoman til I ran out of steam. The clutter and mess had really been bothering me.

shania - I'll be the second one to admit I put DS on his stomach sometimes for naps. He sleeps so much better that way. I am always in the same room when he is on his stomach. I do feel guilty about it though. He sleeps so much better on his stomach so when I just can't get him to sleep on his side or back I try the stomach. He also sleeps on his stomach when his is on me but I figure I am right there so it's not too bad. At his 5 week appointment his ped said he had the head and neck control of a 3 month old. He can already lift himself up at a 90 degree angle on his arms.

charissa - Cute announcement! :)

Jane - Have fun tonight! I really need to clean my house it's driving me crazy.

Shania of course you are welcome!

Jane he is such a cutie!

Books I had not read Healthy Sleep Habits Healthy Child and I am loving it right now. everything makes so much sense. Dylan is a perfect sleeper and I am determined to have Katie follow in his path!

Jennifer that pic is hysterical! I can totally see Dylan filling up a potty with legos.

We are about to attempt our first dinner out with two kids. eek! We really followed sleep cues today and katie napped great all day so I am hoping she will be good

eta Charissa the announcement is so cute!!!

Photo project
When DS was a couple months old I did a photo montage and it came out pretty cute, so I've been trying to take some pictures of Kaylie to do something similar for her. Of course I still haven't had hardly any pictures of the 2 kids printed...need to do that one of these days.
Anyway, I got the frame at Restoration Hardware and then used Shutterfly to size the pictures to fit in the different sized holes. I took some pictures of Kaylie on a dark blanket the other day and it looks pretty cool compared to having the backround be our living room with swings and tv's in the background. Just and idea... since I know we all have so much spare time on our hands. ;)

Hope you have a successful dinner tonight! DH wants to take me out in a couple weeks for my 30th bday dinner, but I'm not sure I'm ready to leave both kids with a sitter. Kaylie's not too fond of the bottle, so not sure how a sitter would handle that.
Sorry to hear Katie's been a bit of a handful for you. Kaylie was starting to seem a bit more tempermental, but I think it may be a reaction to the dairy I was drinking. Looks like I'm going to have to stay off dairy for awhile...bye bye ice cream. :(

Kopper and Shania--stomach sleeping
Welcome Shania!
I didn't start putting my 1st son on his stomach until he was a couple months old and boy did he hate it. So with DD I've been giving her lots of tummy time from the very beginning. About half the time she takes her afternoon nap on her tummy. She's pretty gassy so it really seems to help get the farts out.

Jane&Andy
Good luck with the bbq. Maybe you can get a break if others at the bbq want to watch Joey for a few minutes. I hear you on freaking over the clutter and mess of the house. I have to have DH take DS out for a walk when I want to vaccuum since DS starts crying when he hears the vaccuum. I can't wait until we move into our new house...more space! Less clutter!

Hapa we never made it out because katie slept too late and I am trying so hard with the sleep thing we did not want to wake her! oh well. I think a lot of her fussyness stems from being overtired because I am two busy with dylan and her to watch for sleep cues and follow the 2 hour wake rule. but now I am really trying because when she is overtired she is impossible to get down = me losing it. How do you know it is dairy?? I am so confused about this because a lot of stuff I read says the amount of babies with dairy aversions is actually really small. But Katie does seem uncomfortable a lot and has mucousy spitups but isn't their stool supposed to be also? what were kaylie's signs? btw I loved your photos of jack. I made something like it for my mom of dylan after seeing yours last year!

Ah, sorry you didn't get to go out tonight, but I understand all about keeping on schedule. Jack's got a 102 fever and runny nose, so we've only been able to go out for a walk...not to a festival and friend's house like we were hoping. Well, just hoping he has this random 1 day fever that's been going around.
I didn't think Kaylie would have any dairy probs since I never have. No one on my side of the family has problems either. But DH's brother had some issues when he was a kid, and Jack had mucusy poo when I tried to give him milk based formula when he was 10 months. So, I figured there was a possibility Kaylie could have some milk issues. Well, for a couple weeks she was throwing/spitting up almost every day...major spit up, like her entire stomach contents all at once. We would all be soaked. So her ped told me to give up milk for the week...and she's been fine since...well, until yesterday when she did another throw up in the morning...but then I realized that I ate these enchiladas my MIL made for dinner Fri night that had cheese and sour cream. So I guess that's probably it. Sounds like you're on to something with the sleep schedule and the 2 hour rule. Will Katie sleep if she's out and about?

Sal - Sorry you didn't get to go out, but at least its for a good cause, we're still researching the best way to "sleep train" DS, since he's still barely 6 weeks, we're planning on waiting till he hits that 3 month mark, but keeping up a "routine" for bedtime in the meantime.

hapa omg, SO cute collage of DS. I may just have to steal that idea ;) and spare time, what the heck is that?? I admire you ladies that have more than one, I can't even fathom having another kid around, haha.

Dr's appt. 6 Week weight checkup: 8lbs 8oz.

Sleep: Mackenzie sleeps on her back or side mostly or on her stomach if she's laying on top of me. Her sleep varies during the day but we've pretty much got a nighttime sleep schedule going now. We work on getting her to sleep between 9 and 11pm with feedings and calming atmosphere. She will sleep right through and wake between 4am-6am. Only if she's sleeping in my bed with me. The second we lay her in her crib her eyes pop open and she cries. It's very frustrating. And since we enjoy the long stretches of sleep, we've given in and let her sleep in our bed. Here's some more pictures.

Sal03 - Sorry you didn't make it out tonight.

Our announcements came today. I ordered post cards from Snapfish. The backside has his birth stats and a note from us. Even though they are post cards DH wants to mail them in envelopes because he doesn't want them to get ruined by the post office or for everyone to see him.

Kopper your announcement looks really cute. I love the photos

Briamcd your sleeping angel is adorable!

Sal I really liked Healthy Sleep Habits... after I read it, as soon as D had been up for 1.5 hours, I would take him into a quiet room and either dance slowly with him or put him down, rock him gently and sing to him. Always worked with him but only works sometimes with G. But then D had clear sleep cues (rub his eyes) and I'm still trying to figure out G's.

Hapa the montage is gorgeous and I have a frame like that so I'm going to steal that idea :)

Jane I hope your cookout went well. I can relate about the clutter/mess getting to you. I had the rare occurrence of both babies taking naps at the same time today so I ran around cleaning like a mad woman too :)

Our 2-month checkup is coming up... at the 1-month check, G weighed 12 lbs 5 oz  and our doctor was like "what are you feeding him?" :) He had gained over 4 pounds!!!!!! She said he looked like a 3-month-old or older. My mom thinks he looks more like a 6-month-old (he's now wearing what D wore when he was 5 months old...)

I'm anxious to see what he weighs now because he hasn't been eating as much lately. I waited too long to introduce him to the bottle and now that I'm getting ready to go back to work, he's rejecting the bottle. He finally will eat from it but will only eat 1-2 ounces at a sitting (this is the same boy who drains an entire breast in less than 5 minutes and when I pump and drain one breast, I get 7-8 ounces!!!) I'm worried that he's going to starve when I return to work!

ETA: When I say "bottle" I mean EBM not formula

Wow this thread is moving!

Shania - Welcome!

bria - Love the new pics! The first one with her hands tucked under is too cute!

hapa - LOVE the photo idea!! May have to start woking on something like that if I get some time.

Kopper - Your DS is such a beautiful baby?

Sleep - DS loves sleeping on his belly, but I only let him rest like that every now and then when DH or I are with him. We have a baby bed in between us in our bed, but he doens't like it. Usually we have to cuddle him till he falls asleep then gently put him in his bed. Looks like I need to get these sleep books you all are talkiung about!

2 hour sleep rule - Ok I am obviously way behind you all, but what is the 2 hour sleep rule? :o

Jane&Andy
05-21-2006, 07:16 AM
Mel - the 2hr sleep rule is that babies this young can't handle being awake for more than 2hrs without getting overtired and cranky. So within 2hrs of them waking up you want them to be back asleep. Sometimes with even just an hour they are ready to go back to sleep.

hapa - I love that collage! If I can get some good close ups like you did I would love to do something like that. I hope Jack feels better soon.

Kopper - your announcement turned out great, I love the black & white photos. love the little footsie picture!

briamcd - Mackenzie is so cute! :)

Joey sometimes ends up sleeping on his side
http://images1.snapfish.com/346%3A87%3A%3A%3B%7Ffp342%3Enu%3D3237%3E%3B35%3E43 3%3EWSNRCG%3D323373%3A48%3A%3A95nu0mrj
this was taken right after I slipped out of the bed, he never stays asleep more than a minute or two after I get up.

He woke up every 2hrs last night! :( At least he didn't have the few hours of awake time so thats a step in the right direction. But I'm beginning to feel like he will always sleep like a newborn. :(

the cookout last night was ok. It was only a few minutes away and Joey was due for a nap so of course he fell asleep in the car and then was not very happy when the car stopped five minutes later. After a good meal though he fell asleep.

today we're meeting with the priest to plan his baptism (June 25th). I still have to figure out what he's going to wear for it.

Shania this link on kellymom.com has a calculator for how much BM your baby should be drinking from a bottle. Katie is only 2.5oz so if you can work him up to maybe 3 or 4 depending on what the calculator says he should be fine. As I have read many times in the BFing thread, the amount you pump has no relation to how much they are actually taking in at each feeding. Hope he gets better with the bottle soon!

Not to turn this thread into my personal sleep journal but the 2 hour rule worked great for us yesterday. Three good naps in the crib then Katie to sleep at 9pm, woke at 3 and went until 6. Trying to keep that up today!

Mel there is a good thread on this in Parenting 0-18 months called Sleep teaching or something like that. Healthy Sleep Habits Healthy Child is by Weissbluth. One of his theories to follow is the 2 hour waketime rule. Basically you should not let your baby be awake more than 2 hours or he will get overtired and be harded to get down for a nap. So at the 1.5 hour mark we are trying to swaddle, shush and soothe and then get her napping by 2 hours. This book is all about following sleep cues. This morning the second I saw Katie's eyes getting heavy I swaddled her and put her right in the crib and she went to sleep. Now that she is 8 weeks we are slowly transitioning her from our bed to the crib and it has been going really well for naps.

Briamcd love the pics. Isn't it so cute how they sleep on their hands like that?

Kopper the announcement is precious!

Hapa She is really throwing me because she rarely sleeps while we are out! I am so not used to this. Dylan used to pass out in the mall for hours. So if I am to follow Weissbluth and never wake a sleeping baby and follow the two hour wake time rule... I am basically never leaving the house

eta cross posted with jane - sorry for the double sleep explanation!

Sal Your baby slept for six hours??!! I am so jealous!

Paige and Cole are still eating every three hours so by the time they are fed and soothed they are sleeping about an hour a half at a time which means Dad and I are getting about an hour at a time if we're lucky. Last night I was up from 2am on and am still going.

Its tough to figure out where they should be though because they were preemies by 3.5 weeks..anyone else trying to figure out actual vs. adjusted age or somewhere in between?

Just wanted to drop in and share a funny sleep story. We had friends visiting us this weekend from another country (a couple and their two kids) and after they watched us struggle to put both sons to sleep throughout the weekend, they said to DH and me: "So let me understand this, in America, you're advised to put the baby on his back, with no blankets and no toys and leave him to fall asleep on his own? and if he wakes up crying, don't go to him so he can learn to fall asleep by himself?" They had such incredulous looks on their faces that DH and I were left stammering...!!!

Sal thanks for the link, I'll check it out!

Shania sorry I just realized the link did not work. Anyway, the milk calculator is on kellymom.com. Let me know if you have trouble finding it and I'll try again

Mel I love the pics. what a sweet little face. he looks like such a big boy in the second one. He looks like he loves tummytime

jrsygirl yes, I have been pretty lucky with the long stretches. Your kiddies sound like Dylan in the beginning and he ended up turning into the best sleeper ever. He sleeps from 7pm-6am and takes a 3 hour nap in the afternoon so there is hope. Hang in there!

Well my sleep update is that last night was a mess. We ended up going out to dinner but it was not worth it. It was right when Katie was supposed to be sleeping and by the time we got home she was a mess. I think if she would sleep in the carseat it would be fine. But she won't so it took three hours to get her down, she just would not settle and was so overtired. And she was doing perfectly on the 2 hour rule. Unless it really can't be helped, I am going to try to stick with it until she can be awake for longer stretches.

just bumping us up from page 2.

Joey is taking short naps today. I'm trying very hard to get him down before he gets overtired but sometimes its freaking impossible. It doesn;t help his night time sleep anyway but it does keep him in a better (less fussy) mood. It took 5 tries to get him down last night (kept waking up after 5 or 10min in the bassinet). I thought I was going to go nuts! He's still waking up about 5 times a night. I just keep telling myself that eventually he will sleep longer.

My Mom found a baptism gown (for whatever reason she wanted to shop for one herself). It sounds gorgeous and its one less chore for me. :)

Mel - Ben is adorable.

the little stinker is up from his nap now.

jrsygrl-We too are having some difficulty in knowing where Kyle is supposed to be at this stage in the game since he was born early as well. We haven't quite been able to develop a routine yet for sleep as on Saturday night he slept from 10 pm to 5:30 am but last night he woke up at his usual 3 to 4 hours to eat. I have been reading Healthy Sleep Habits but it is hard to tell if he is supposed to be at the almost 7 week mark or less than that with being born a preemie!

Saving us from page two...

Sounds like Thomas is rousing so I only have a minute (durn! I should have swaddled him!). We successfully made it through the weekend of events associated with my brother's wedding. I changed out of the bridesmaids dress (strapless) into a two-piece nursing-friendly dress for the reception and then the boy slept through the whole thing. It was much needed after he was such a bear at the rehearsal dinner. Of course, at that he went to sleep at 9:30 and didn't wake again until 3:30. He had not napped all day long!

We had his one month WBV yesterday and here are his latest stats (I never shared his 2 week measurements, so here they are too):

2 week weight: 9 lbs, 8 oz.
1 month weight: 10 lbs! (50th percentile)

2 week length: 21 3/4"
1 month length: 23" (90th percentile!)

Things are going well. Trying to get him on a bit of a schedule, but these days, if he is awake he seems to be fussy. And he's having a horrible bout of baby acne on his face. So sad!

He's doing really well for his first stretch of night sleep. We put him down anywhere from 10-11:30 and he sleeps until 3 a.m. (this has been the case for about a week). It sure makes my life better to get 3-4 hours of straight sleep!

I need to run and put a load of laundry in before he wakes! Hope everyone is doing well!

I also wanted to address a few QOTDs:

Birth Control we are using the mini pill. We have DTD a few times (I had a c-section so we could start early). It is getting better . . .

Sleeping Elliot really has been a dream kid. He eats every 3 hrs, plays and then sleeps. At night he will go 4-5hr stretches often, although two nights ago I had to wake him up at 6 1/2 hrs because my BBs were KILLING me. This change is occurring at 1 month. I would also add that I find if I lay him down for bed between 8:30 and 9pm he does soo much better than if I try to squeeze another feeding in. It may mean I have to get up sooner after I fall asleep, but otherwise he is tired and starts to get fussy.

Swing He will stay in an hour or so every day - few days. He is pretty content hanging out on the floor or play pen, so swing is when he is more fussy.

Parenting Book I sort of follow Baby Wise, although I should say that Elliot really is a non-fussy baby so in general it isn't an issue of what to do when he is fussy. He has made it very easy to follow some structure - he does it naturally.

Tummy Time I know Elliot would like to be a tummy sleeper (he falls asleep at tummy time), but I still put him on his back to sleep at night and naps.

Milestone update: I am sure I got a voluntary smile today. I looked at him and smiled and he gave the biggest smile back - so fun.

Alright, I think I am caught up. Congrats to everyone. I love all the pics - hope you all are having a great day. Looking forward to following the motherhood journey with you all.

testicle size - sorry, I'm no help. I haven't noticed a difference like that on Joey but that doesn't mean its not normal.

Hi Guinness. that's awesome that Elliot is such a good sleeper. :)

Joey's naps were getting shorter and shorter so yesterday I dug out the white noise machine that DH reminded me we had. He napped for 1hr 20min this morning and has been down for about 30min now (I was getting a lot of 20-40min naps).

mel - Did you get an answer on the testicles? Is it possible one has descended before the other? I can't remember Caden's except they were small at that point.

We've had a hellacious day. Caden fell in the bathtub this morning and his top two teeth bit through the skin under his bottom lip. I had just stepped out of the shower, so I had to rush to get dressed and went to the ER without even brushing my teeth. He had to get stitches but thankfully there won't be a scar. We were there for what seemed like forever and had left Marin with a neighbor, so I've barely nursed her today. I'm so afraid I'm going to mess with my supply, but hopefully we can get back to nursing on demand tonight.

Jennifer sorry to hear about your day. Hope Caden is feeling better

Jane Joey is sooo cute! His eyes have that mischievous "I know something you don't" look about them :)

mel sorry, no info. I know that testicles are one of the first things the ped checks at the WBV but if you're anxious and can't wait till then, you should call your ped

jeeplover & jrsygirl the best advice I ever got was "let your baby tell you what he needs" because I read so many books with my first DS that I started to get conflicting advice about milestones and habits... I gave up and just really paid attention to what D wanted and soon I could distinguish between his cries (hunger, sleepiness, diaper needs changing) and when I followed his cues, he basically set his own schedule which we still use today. It hasn't been that easy with G partly because half my attention is on his brother and partly because its been so great outside that I'm not spending as much time indoors as I did with D whom I had in the winter.

update: we had our 2 month WBV yesterday and everything looks good. G now weighs 15lbs 8oz:eek: I am a small person and DH is skinny so where did I get this giant baby??? He's like 99th percentile in both height & weight!

Thanks everyone for the compliments on Jacob's announcements. Now we just have to find the time to address and mail them. Dumb me didn't order envelopes before hand to address. DH is supposed to try and print them.

JenniferEC - I'm so sorry about Caden's fall. I hope he is ok now. I think your supply should be ok since this was just a one time thing.

Jane - Joey is so cute!! The second picture just melted my heart. :) I'm glad the noise machine worked for you. We have a bear that makes HB sounds and have used it since he came home. He seems to sleep better with it on.

mel - Hope you found an answer. It probably wouldn't hurt to call your ped.

Guinness - Elliot is a cutie! Smiles are the best aren't they!

Sully - Wow he is long!

---
I know I sound like a broken record.... but we are still struggling with BFing because of my low supply. I have seriously been contemplating quitting and have given myself permission to if I continue to feel the way I do about it. DH bought a digital scale on Ebay and I'm going to do feed and weighs for a day when it gets there to see how much my supply has increased from two weeks ago. If it's better I'm sure that will help me want to keep going.

Oh DH just showed me this and we were cracking up! :)

Typing 1-handed so i don't know how many people i'll be able to get to and there will be many typos...

mel: could he have an undescended testicle? google it and see if that's what it is (it's easily corrected if that's it). love the new pics!

Jane: adorable pics of joey! we have that gymbo romper too, and the embroidered tiger overalls (they ere gifts) and i think they're just so cute.

Kopper: gorgeous announcements! sorry to hear bf'ing is such a struggle still--you have shown amazing perseveranc over these past two months. have you considred domperidone? (i think that's what its called--the prescription that increases milk supply)

shania- great advice about following your baby and not the books! I love your friends' reaction to US sleep ideals, lol.

jrsy & jeeplover: I remember reading a secion of Weissbluth that said you should adjust based on EDD and not actual birth date for babies born early.

Guiness: cute pics of your DS!

Sleep: DS sleeps both on his back and stomach, and his side too. I never let him sleep on his stomach unless i'm right next to him though so i can watch his breathing. He is a snacker who eats frequently during the day (every 2 hours about) and at night goes every 2-3 hours.

I'm feeling really well-rested though b/c we cosleep and when DS wakes up to eat he doesn't cry/fuss so i just roll over, latch him on, and drift off again. But when i change him in the middle of the night he gets mad and cries so i wake up a lot more then, but its just once a night. DH takes him around 6am and i stay in bed sleeping until 8/9 which is heavenly :). Interrupted sleep doesn't bother me.

jennifer: So sorry about Caden's fall! I'm glad he's ok.

the noise machine didn't help that much with naps after all. The rest of his naps were very short today. I walked him around the neighborhood for an hour b/c he finally fell asleep while we were out.

Jennifer - sorry about Caden's fall, poor kid.

Kopper - I'm sorry you are still struggling with BFing. I hope it gets better for you.

Sevilla - your sleep/feeding schedule sounds a lot like ours. I hadn't planned to cosleep but being able to latch him on and then drift off allows me to get more sleep. Its not high quality sleep b/c he does make noise and wakes me up frequently but I'll take what I can get.

Jane: Yeah, i hear you on all the noises they make! I was feeling a little bad b/c DS has had one 4 hour stretch but otherwise 3 hours between feedings round the clock is as long as he'll go--its usually 2 hours--and i read about other's babies who go 5-7 hours at night at times. But i realized today at DS's 2 mo. appt that he's eating so often b/c he's a little peanut (10 1/2 lbs. at 8 weeks and 21.5" long), so he doesn't yet have the reserves to go longer between nursings. Helped me feel better about the schedule he's made for himself and to realize that he knows what he needs to grow and i need to trust that and respond :).

Jane&Andy
05-23-2006, 05:17 PM
Sevilla - my little boy is a little more of a peanut than yours (9lbs 10oz at 9wks) - so I've been figuring the same thing. He's gone 4-4.5 hrs twice but thats it. I'm hoping once he hits 12 wks he'll maybe start sleeping longer.

Kopper - I hope you can get BF figured out. I'm worried I won't be able to keep up with Marin pretty soon. You're a great mom just for giving so much effort!

Sevilla - How did you figure out how to side BF? I've tried it a few times, but she falls off the latch and we have to keep relatching. I'm guessing she's not positioned correctly, but I have no idea.

Caden is sleeping well tonight. He finally passed out after dinner. I have to say today was the hardest day of being a mom. Watching my son be strapped to a table and then scream while he looks at me with tears screaming down his face was the hardest thing I've ever done. I had to walk away for a bit while he was getting stitches because I was about to break down. I wanted to be the one with the pain. Thank goodness DH hadn't left for the airport yet, although he was a mess because he was the one giving Caden a bath when it happened. Now I just have to clean up a very bloody bathroom, but I'm letting that go until tomorrow because I'm too tired to deal with it tonight.

Jennifer: Here's how we nurse lying down. I roll him perfectly on his side (i often pull his pj's to help with this), and i roll on my side with my arm bent under the pillow (some pics of sidelying nursing show the infant cradled in the mom's arm but that doesn't work for us). So we're both laying on our sides facing each other, and i scoot close enough that my breast is right next to his mouth and sometimes help move his head to latch on, other times he latches on his own. Sometimes there is a bit of angling to do, but not that much since his head and my breast are both level with each other on the bed. I put my top arm curled on his torso/butt to keep him on his side while he's eating, and when he's done he just falls off the bb and goes back to sleep. I've been known to wake up an hour later to realize he's asleep and i still haven't refastened my nursing bra ;). HTH!

Jennifer how awful :( I can only imagine how absolutely horrible that whole day was. big hugs to you!!!

Jane I just love the new pictures. he reminds me so much of dylan, such a big easy smile

Sevilla I doze off all the time too! it is the only thing that saves me. I wake up an hour or so later and her face is just resting comfortably on my chest!

Sleep of course when DH was home saturday - monday katie took great naps. Yesterday she took five 30 minute naps. I feel like I spent my whole day trying to get her to nap!

Kopper whatever you choose, at least you can always say you tried EVERYTHING. You have been so determined and dedicated!

Jennifer-I am so sorry to hear of Caden's fall! Poor little guy!

Jane-Love the new pictures of Joey-he is just so adorable!

Kopper-You have done so well with the BFing that you are taking the right attitude-if you stress too much it is not healthy for you or for Jacob!

Well these last couple of days have been very trying for me. Kyle has not slept more than 20 minutes at a time during the day which makes it next to impossible for me to pump or for that matter do anything else. The only good thing is that he is sleeping between 5 and 6 hours at night but he is so cranky by the evening hours it is so hard. I am really worried because we are driving up to MA this weekend to visit my family and this will make a very LONG weekend if he doesn't take naps.

Jane&Andy
05-24-2006, 06:20 AM
Jennifer - I position Joey laying down to BF a lot like Sevilla does (including tugging on his pjs to move him around). But I often end up with him cradled in my lower arm to keep him positioned on his side and latched on. It helps get him started. I can pull my arm away and keep him latched on usually. I don't sleep with a nursing bra on but I do usually end up falling asleep still hanging out of my nursing pjs. :p

jeeplover - I have the same problem with Joey during the day. Yesterday he started out with a 1hr 20min nap (he woke up at an hour and I popped the paci in his mouth and got another 20min), then it was 30min, then it was 20min. I finally took him for a walk in the evening and got about a 40min nap out of him. I tried the white noise machine yesterday but it obviously didn't make a big difference.

shania - thats a mighty big boy you have!

Its my anniversary today - DH took the day off so the three of us are going to the zoo. :) It may sound silly but its one of our favorite things to do. And I'm looking forward to it being less crowded then it is on weekends.

Jane - LOVE the new pics of Joey. Your new icon is too cute!

Jennifer Sorry to hear about your trip to the ER. I can't imagine how hard that was. I hope your DS is feeling better, poor little guy.

Kopper - Sorry to hear about the supply issues. I don't have any new advice, but try to hang in there.

Sevilla - I am with you on co sleeping, it makes me nights much easier. We have a safe and secure sleeper, but whenever we move DS from cuddled up next to us to it, he takes a while to fall asleep. He spends abour half the night in his sleeper bed and half next to one of us. Do you just place DS between you on the bed? We are thinking about this, but I am just worried about the bed being soft, blankets, etc

Testicle question - It looks like both are decended, one is just larger. I l know the hormones are going down after birth, so maybe one just has more than the other? It doens't seem to bother him, so I'm just going to keep an eye on it for now.

side lying nursing - This is the only way I make it through the night! Like everyone else I almost always wake up with him laying on my bb's!

We're doing fairly well over here. I am trying to follow the 2 hour wake rule and get on a tiny bit of a schedule, but Ben has a mind of his own. We attemped a bottle of EBM two nights ago, but he wasn't too excited about it. We're going to try again tonight and will hopefully be giving him one bottle most nights. Oh my the batteries in the wing are running out. Must.get.more!

It doens't seem to bother him, so I'm just going to keep an eye on it for now. From what I understand it's very common. One of Finn's hangs a wee bit lower than the other as well. I read somewhere (can't remember if it's a book or a website) that it's common for the one on the left to hang a bit lower and forward of the one on the right. This holds true for DS and DH. Kinda wierd, but...meh!

Happy Anniversary Jane! Have a lovely day!!! Yes, G is a big boy and I feel it mostly in the evening during his fussy period when he wants me to hold him nonstop (my shoulder blades start hurting from carrying him around in a sling while making dinner). I miss being able to hold him with one hand while doing everything with the other hand

mel we worry about co-sleeping too, mostly because DH is all over the place and I worry about him rolling over the boy. G has trouble accepting EBM in bottles too but I find that he takes it from other people (DH or the babysitter) when I'm out of the room (when I try to give him myself, he screams and moves his head toward my bbs)

Kopper I really admire all the effort you put into BF. So sorry to hear you're still having issues

sleep feeling much better about tummy sleeping after getting ok from his ped. that morning DH had teased me (what's the point of getting him to sleep for 5-6 hour stretches if you're going to jump out of bed every hour to check if he's breathing? ) So, after getting the okay (bcos of his weight and neck control), I put him on his tummy for the whole night the past two nights and it's been wonderful (no grunts, yelps, etc). Goes to bed at 9pm sleeps till 2am, wake up to eat and go back to sleep till 7am.

Mel: We have a cosleeper too and DS has only slept in it a couple times. I sometimes have him between us if i'm nursing on that side, but i keep an arm between him and DH. It's safer to have him sleep between you and the cosleeper b/c you have the stronger instincts of where he is in the bed vs. DH. When he is between us we keep the blanekts, sheets, etc... pushed down more.

following hapa's lead I put together this collage of Joey. If I can't find a cool frame with cutouts of various sizes I may do it as one big photo like this. But mostly I just put the collage together to see how the photos look together. Anyway, I'm pretty happy with it.

I don't know if you have a Sam's Club membership but they will print out photo collages like that for you and then you would just have to buy a big frame to fit the whole thing into. Jane - Love the collage! I am putting that on my list of things to do this week. Too good an idea to miss out on.

Thrush :( - After doing lots of reading it looks like the symtoms I've been trying to ignore (or thought were something else) are most likely thrush. First mastitis, now this. We have an apt tomorrow afternoon, so hopefully we can fix this problem soon!

Oh no, I hope it's not thrush. You're smart to go get it checked out if that's what you think might be going on. Good luck!
Oh, and about the testies...I'm sure it's got to be normal to have different sizes. I know my brother in law has one that is significantly larger than the other (not that I've seen...just heard). Kaylie has one ear that's a bit funky looking compared to her other, but as long as she can hear that's a-okay.

Jane&Andy
Really cute collage! That came out great. Yeah, you can just get that printed out as an 8X10 or something and put it into a regular frame. Have you tried Aaron Bros for a collage frame? Mine is from Restoration Hardware...but kind of expensive. Pottery Barn has some too I think. I haven't been able to get any cute smiling pictures like you got.

stomach sleeping
Not to freak you out shania0474 right after you got the go ahead to stomach sleep, but I had a bit of a scare last night...
I usually let Kaylie sleep on her stomach for one of her naps during the day. Last night she was fussing when I tried putting her down to sleep so I put her on her tummy for a bit (on our bed). She was quiet so I went in to check on her a few minutes later and she had spit up and had her face right in it. Poor little thing! She has pretty good head control and will usually turn her head to the side, but thank goodness my mommy instinct has me check on her. I'll still put her on her stomach, but probably check on her lots right after she eats in case of spit ups like that. I'm sure most of us were put on our stomachs to sleep and we all turned out fine. But maybe our bed is too soft to have Kaylie on her tummy though. I'll have to try her on the floor or something next time.

Jane: Gorgeous collage! It is so cool!

Mel: Sorry about the thrush :(. I bet the abx for the mastitis caused it. We've been dealing with it for the past few weeks (thanks to the 8 doses of abx for Strep B i received during labor) so i feel your pain, literally! We are almost over it now, DS just still has the yeast diaper rash. I hope the treatment works quickly for you! Here is a link one of my LJ friends gave to me when i was first dealing with it that helped a lot: http://www.drjaygordon.com/development/bf/thrush.asp , www.kellymom.com also has some good links for thrush if you do a search. The key is to be *very* vigilant about treating it. I set up a 'contaminated laundry basket' for anything that touched my breasts and ds's mouth (bras, burp clothes, towels) and washed and dried it all on hot. Keep doing it for a week after symptoms disappear. Good luck!

Sevilla - Thanks! Yep, I have been taking Domperidone for ~5 weeks now. My current med regimen is 2 Dom, 4 fenugreek, 2 alfalfa at 9am, 3pm and 9pm and 2 Dom at 3am. I'm also taking my prenatal so that is 27 pills per day and I am going to add Blessed Thistle if I continue BFing (another 12-16 pills per day).

Jane - Thanks! Sorry the noise machine didn't work. Happy anniversary!!! Hope you had a good day at the zoo.

Jennifer -Thanks! I think you should be fine since your supply should grow with her. Unfortunately since my DS was a big baby from the start and the setbacks we had in the beginning my supply isn't where he needs it to be.

Sal - Thanks for the support! I have pretty much tried everything and it has been really draining. I'm looking forward to the day when I can quit worrying about his eating and start worrying about something else. ;)

jeeplover - Thanks! I hope Kyle slept better for you today. We've had several days lije that in the last week. Hope this weekend goes well. We are doing a driving trip next week and I'm scared. DS doesn't sleep in the car very well.

mel - Thanks! I'm so sorry about the thrush. You aren't getting a break are you? :(

(he wasn't out in the sun for long but we had to ditch the stroller before entering the baby Panda exhibit)

Joey actually let us eat out last night for our anniversary - slept the whole time (thats normally his fussy time). And then at 7pm I caught him getting drowsy (thats earlier than usual) so I put him down in the bassinet and he slept for 4hrs. The rest of the night was not so good but I guess its still progress. That was only the 3rd time he'd ever slept for 4hrs.

we bought a video camera last night as our anniversary present - I can't wait to use it!

jeeplover - I used a photo editing program to make the collage - the program (Microsoft Digital Image Pro 10) actually did all the work for me. I'm going to order the print of the collage from mpix.com - they're print quality is awesome. I used them (and my computer program) for my photo birth announcements too.

hapa - thanks for the ideas on where to shop for a frame. After doing some browsing online I think I'm going to end up ordering the collage as one big photo, the collage frames are just too expensive for me right now. cute baby photo! I think Kaylie has your eyes and mouth. :)

I don't know where all the time goes... Actually, I do know... ;)

Anders is doing good: he seems to be gaining weight as he looks more and more like Winston Churchill (according to DH) .

His most recent stats:

2 weeks weight: 8 lbs 14 oz
17 days weight: 9 lbs 5 oz

We're now done with the 3-week growth spurt, but still somewhat fussy on and off (especially during the evening). One thing that calms him down is... baby bjorn... Swing does not work for us, he couldn't care less. And Moby wrap works only if he is in a good mood (do not even attempt to put him in it when he is fussy! ). I'm worried that he is too young for the bjorn... but he seems so comfy in it! He sleeps OK at night: we get 4-3 hour stretches of sleep (sometimes 2 hours as well...). But my goodness how this little guy can fight his naps! (this is when the bjorn comes in handy... he goes to sleep within minutes!) We are getting 2-3 hours of alert time (trying to limit it to 1 hour at the time); usually he is quite smiley and happy, but they can also turn out to be 'alert and pissy' periods! Lately, he has started grabbing things -- if this is grabbing -- he touches/hits sofa cushions, toys, mommy's/daddy's face, tugs at mommy's gown etc. It's quite funny!

A weak attempt at shout-outs:

Shania Welcome! So glad you joined our little group!

Mel I'm so sorry about trush! We suspected trush last week and we were told to look for white patches from the inside of his lower lip (if that makes sense). It's the most difficult thing to check their mouths, isn't it?! Oh, and our ped said that the white patches should look like cottage cheese.

Jennifer So sorry about your trip to the ER -- that must have been so scary! :(

Jane Happy anniversary! :)

Sevilla Sorry, somehow I never got back to our the cloth diaper discussion! I was wondering about FB -- what size did you order for your next stash? We like them a lot and right now Anders is in size S, but his thighs are getting quite chunky :p (we are already using the second snap), so I was wondering how much "mileage" I would get out of them... Probably should order some mediums!

Jane: What sweet pictures of you guys!

Uskiku: We're in S FB right now. I double stuff them at night and then we're on the 2nd leg snap on one side and 3rd leg snap on the other. But if i were to use just one insert we could do them on the tightest snap. I think DS will be in the S's for awhile as he's 10 1/2 lbs. right now and they go up to about 15 lb. IIRC His small BSWW covers are just starting to not look ridiculous on him. I'm not sure if we'll stick with using pockets or not for nighttime (i prefer the prefold + cover during the day anyway), but if we do i'll probably buy one of each major kind and see which i like best. I just look at the top rated pockets on www.diaperpin.com and select from those. HTH! i'll be interested to see how M's fit your DS when he moves up, as i've heard some people have trouble switching between sizes.

Just thought I would check in since I haven't been in for awhile. Things are going pretty good here in the H household. Ainsleigh is going to be 3 weeks tomorrow and is going through the 3 week growth spurt... fun times! She went on her first trip last weekend to Phoenix for my brother's wedding. She was a great little traveller, I was quite impressed with her. We ended up driving (Thursday = 4 hours, Friday = 6 hours and Monday = 10 hours) and she did great in the car, sleeping most of the time. We are off to another wedding this weekend down in OC which means another 4 hour drive. Hopefully she will be as good this weekend as she was last weekend.

MMH - she is beautiful

Mel - sorry to hear about the thrush, hope it goes away soon

My little twins are 2 months old and other than going for long walks in the stroller, had only ventured out in the public to the Dr. 3x. So yesterday we finally walked to the hospital to bring the nurses a 2 lb. box of the best chocolates and a thank you card. While there a nurse offered to weigh them, and with their clothes on (an identical outfit) and clean diapers, they were 9.5 for Brycen and 9.75 for Devon. I can't believe it, my babies are getting so big. We go to the Dr. on Tuesday for shots and an official weigh-in.

I also need to start double stuffing, as we seem to be having at least one leak per night... I'm getting seriously tired of Proraps though (unfortunately I have 4 of them in the next size  ), and Anders seems to be between sizes here: the newborn ones look small and the ones that are one size up are too big and it looks like the velcro could hurt his little belly button. Wow, i Haven't been on in a while. Baby has been keeping me busy, but in a good way. She's been really good napping and eating and sleeping through the night. I'm very thankful right now. I hope it last. Just need to try and get her to sleep in her crib.

Jane - so exciting to go to the zoo, and be able to eat out with Joey. Mackenzie is very good when we go out. We feed her a bottle while we wait for our food to arrive at the table, and she sleeps through the meal, usually. Also we've been able to go to the movies twice. She slept through MI:3 and was fussy through Take the Lead. but we were able to keep her pretty quiet with a pacifer and holding her.

DH's little sister is getting married tomorrow - tonight we're going to the RD. Its 90min away but MIL lives in that same town so we're going to leave a little early and stop there first - gives Joey a break to eat, sleep, play, etc between the car ride and dinner. Tomorrow we have to be up bright and early for the wedding (2hrs away) - it'll be a long day. The wedding and RD are in two different towns so we're coming home in between, no point in getting a hotel. Luckily Joey enjoys the car rides. :) Its a fun chance for Joey to see family again (and meet a few more people).

We are gearing up for a trip to Kansas on Thursday for my cousin's wedding. I am so nervous about it because Jacob doesn't sleep very long or well in the car. It's about an 8 drive with only short stops so I imagine it will take us 10 hours or so with Jacob.

He has been doing well. I am still BFing and I think my supply has increased. I did stop using the Lact-Aid supplement. It was driving me nuts and making me stressed out. We are now just supplementing with bottles again. Things are better because I took the pressure off of myself to exclusively BF. I will BF as long as I have milk and he is willing but I'm not going to stress about it any longer. It wasn't healthy for us and I wasn't enjoying it. Hopefully my supply will eventually be enough for him but if not that's ok too. He is growing and happy and that is what matters right! :)

Oh, on Wednesday evening he laughed for the first time. He laughed for several minutes when we were sitting outside watching Sally (the dog) run around the yard. He thought it was so funny! :D I haven't been able to get him to do that again.

Kopper - you have a great attitude about BFing/supplementing. I'm still supplementing Joey some. I struggled with it for awhile but particularly when he was going through the growth spurt he seemed happier when he was getting both.

We survived SIL's wedding and all the travel. It made for two late nights but both nights Joey fell asleep on the way home and allowed us to transfer him to the bassinet without waking up.

I had hoped to get someone to take a picture of DH, Joey and I at the wedding but it was insanely hot so by the time we had time I had melted and didn't feel like posing. Anyway, here's Joey and I - I just got the baby carrier and luckily he loves it.

Jane - Thanks! I feel so much more relaxed now that I'm not putting that pressure on myself to keep increasing my supply. If it happens that's great but if not we will be ok. Joey looks so cute in his car seat. Glad he is sleeping better for you. Where did you get your baby carrier? It looks like it may be easier to use than my ring sling. I like my sling but it is kind of a pain.

Kopper - I got it from Rosie Baby (http://www.rosiebaby.com/). Excellent quality, gorgeous fabrics to choose from and great customer service. :) I just got it so I'm still getting the hang of tying it on but it gets easier each time I try (3 times so far!). I was really fighting the supplementing at first, I wanted to be able to exclusively BF. But then I decided it wasn't worth the stress, I'll do what works best for me and Joey and not worry about outside pressure.

Hi everyone,

Haven't been here in awhile like everyone else have been pretty busy taking care of the baby. :D Glad to see everyone's babies is doing so well! I still can't believe how quickly time flies, Deborah is already going to be 7 weeks old this week!

Anyway, I just have time for some quick SO's:

Jane--your carrier is too cute!

Kopper--don't feel bad about the BFing. I'm also supplementing too with Deborah. I decided as long as she gets some milk from me that's ok. Like Jane said she just seemed happier when she gets more full.

mel--sorry to hear about the mastitis. Hope you get better soon.:)

I'm hoping to take more pics of Deborah so I can finally post an updated one of her. Hope everyone has a great Memorial Day!

Jane - Great pics. Looks like Joey had a good time. :) Did AF return for you? I haven't bled in a couple of weeks and now I'm spotting. I hope that's not it.

Kopper - I'm glad you're feeling better about things. You deserve a huge kudos for putting so much effort into BF. I'm just glad to have another BFAR to compare notes with. :) Have a great trip!

Marin has a rash all over her head and shoulders, even in her hair. I'd like to think it's acne, but it looks worse. I've cut out dairy but it's hard because I drink a gallon of milk myself in 2-3 days. She has her 2 mo appt soon so I'm eager to hear what her ped will say.

Caden gets his stitches out tomorrow. If he didn't have to be held down, I wouldn't dread it so much.

I hope everyone had a great Memorial Day!

Jennifer - Let me know how cutting the dairy out goes for Marin. Ben has a rash/ache that sounds very similar and just started in the last week.

Jane - You looked great at the wedding. I love your carrier! I have a sling one, but would like to try something different as well. Did you order it recently? I was confused as to if she is still taking orders now.

Gina - Looking forward to seeing more of your pics!

Kopper - Have a safe trip! That is too funny about DS laughing at the dog :)

Jennifer - if that was AF last month then she's due back this week - no sign of her yet. I hope Marin's rash clears up soon.

Mel - If you email her she can probably work in an order for you - she's a CC member and she took my order even when she was "closed" for new orders. I ordered it several weeks ago and for various reasons it took her longer than usual to make it. But it was worth the wait. Tonight Joey was struggling to fall asleep for his last nap so I put him in the carrier and he slept for an hour - it was great. :) If the carrier can help him get through that difficult evening nap (he almost always has trouble with that one) then it will be worth its weight in gold. cute photos of Ben. :)

Jennifer - My DS has the exact same thing. A rash all over cheeks, behind ears, down neck and on shoulders and back. I am doing the same thing with cutting out dairy to see if that is it. He also has been much more fussy during feedings, so I hope this works. I started cutting it out on Fri, and I have noticed feeding writhing is a little better, but rash is still there. I have also tried to be vigilant about wiping up the spit up with a wet washcloth (he has been spitting up a lot). Anyway, please post if your doctor says it is something different (I am worried it might be thrush although I don't have any symptoms). All I have read says that rash is itchy, and DS shows no signs of it being itchy.

Its 11:00 and Ben's eaten at 5:30, 7:00, 8:15 and 10:30. I think I constantly have a boob out.

There's voluntary water restrictions (mandatory between 5pm and midnight), yet I turned the sprinkler on because I don't want to waste a valuable 'Ben quiet hour' hand watering the flowers and shrubs. Its voluntary, so the county/neighbors can kiss my arse.

I have half eaten bowls of oatmeal and half cups of tea all over the house

I've consumed about 60oz of water this morning

My kid's in diapers and a bib as a result of an abandoned baby massage session and lots of spit up

Its too hot to go out for a walk

I could barely pump 3 oz yesterday evening for Judd to take 1 feeding at night.

(um...how long till milk catches up with demand and/or the baby hunger subsides?!?)

I'm glad my child's not the only one with the rash. Thomas's is terrible and it seems to just keep getting worse. It started out looking like a bit of acne, now it's a full fledged rash. It's mostly on his face and behind his ears, but it's also in his head and a few spots on his shoulders and upper chest. I wish it would go away! I wanted to take a new picture to use for the announcement, but fat chance with him like this. It's so sad it makes me want to cry. He looks so pathetic...but it doesn't seem to bother him.

I wonder if cutting out milk would help? I mean, I don't drink that much of it or other dairy...and from what I read, it's mostly a reaction to my hormones? Who knows. I'm clueless about this stuff.

My DH left yesterday for a two-week deployment to the Middle East. I'm so nervous about being a single parent in his absence. I could take T to my parents' house for a few days, but I feel like he'll do better here with all of his stuff. I don't know if I could live without the swing for a day or two! :)

cagey - sounds like a growth spurt. I dread the next one. The 3-week one just about drove me nuts! I felt like a machine.

Mel - Ben is adorable. And I'll try not to hold it against him that he's a Clemson fan. :) Reminds me I need to take a picture of T with his USC hat or bib!

Well, sounds like T is waking up a bit, but I still have things to get done before his nap is over. SO I better run! Take care ladies!

Good to hear Sully that there are a few of us with similar rashes. Maybe it really is just baby acne. Everything I read says it is on their face and heads, so when it started on the neck and a little on shoulders and chest I started to think it can't be. . . . hmmm

PS. Good luck single parenting for a couple weeks. You can do it, and if you need a break head over to your parents.

Sully - good luck! My DH might be going out of town for 3 days this summer and just that has me shaking in my boots!

growth spurts suck! I'm still so relieved to be done with the 6wk growth spurt but I think he's due for another one at 12wks. :(

I messed with Joey's morning nap b/c I had to go clear out my desk at work (finally finishing things up there) and then I paid for it afterwards - took me 3hrs to get him down for his afternoon nap. Never again! but its so darned hard to make plans when he doesn't have a schedule yet.

baby acne
Shoot...don't have too much time to post, but it does sound like some of your babies might have baby acne. Kaylie got it at just about 2 months and it lasted for about a month. It ain't pretty. The soft baby skin will come back, but I think this is the way the mother's hormones get released out of the baby's body. Kaylie got it on her face mostly, but also on her chest and head under her hair. Small reddish bumps...

Next comes cradle cap. And I think her cradle cap is actually going away now too. To get rid of cradle cap I would take olive oil (EVOO if you watch Rachel Ray) and rub it onto the cradle cap with a soft brush. Let it sit for about 15 min and brush some more, then use the brush while you shampoo it out also. It helps some. And I was really bad and would pick at it while she was in the bjorn...so hard not to when you're looking straight down at it.

Okay, got to go see why DS is whining...

BAck for SO's later

Sully - Sorry to hear DH is leaving for a few week. I'll be thinking of you. Hang in there!

Baby Acne - I find it hard to believe that all our babies would have rashes so similar and they would all be a milk allergy. I eat a lot of dairy, so I really hope Hapa is right about the hormones. Ben has had his for less than a week and it doens't seem to bother him, so I am going to keep an eye on it for now and keep eating yogurt.

mel - I think you're right about it being acne. I did cut out dairy, but I read that it takes about 7 days to see any results and Marin's skin seems to be better after 2 days, so I'm thinking it's the hormones. It doesn't seem to bother her, but when I look at those bumps all over her, it makes me upset.

Sevilla - I've figured out pumping in the am gets me the most, too. I can get 3oz out of one side by waiting until morning to pump.

Sully - Good luck being a single parent. When DH goes out of town, I head to my parents. Luckily they have a swing, crib, etc. There's no way I could do this by myself!

Jane&Andy - I had to go into work today too. Friday I put in my resignation and today I turned in my computer. Luckily for me Jacob slept on the way there and for 2 hours when we got home. He did cry the whole way home though.

JenniferEC - Thanks! I like comparing notes too. I just signed up for the BFAR.org message boards hoping to read more about BFARing.

baby acne/rash - Jacob has both. The acne is different than the rash. His acne is primarly on his face and come and goes rather quickly. He has a different rash on his head, back, arms and legs. I'm going to ask his ped tomorrow. I too eat a lot of dairy. The bumps are very tiny and the same color as his skin except for on his head.

Acne: Finley has some acne cropping up too, however, there is no rashiness. FWIW, Finley is exclusively FF now as my bbs totally crapped out on me at about 3 weeks PP. I expected this, but it's still pissing me off. Grrrr.
hapa quote: "Next comes cradle cap" DD's cradle cap was soooo bad! The yellow scaliness was quite disturbing to me. I used to pick at it too. For some reason mothering really brings out my obsessive tendencies :o

Baby acne: Mackenzie has had a mild case of it, but she's had a few rashes also. I thought maybe her rash was like a heat rash. But it didn't seem to bother her, and it came with no fever, so I didn't worry about it.

Milk sensitivity: Mac's been really fussy and gassy. She's always been that way, so I decided to cute milk out of my diet and we supplement with Soy instead of regular formula now. She's much better. But she never had a rash b/c of it.

Bfing: Kopper I completely understand what's going on with supply. We've been supplementing with formula and I pump breast milk also. Mackenzie likes to eat 4-5oz every 4 hours now, when I pump, i get about 2 oz. So, every other bottle is formula. At first I felt bad. especially since I'm pumping b/c she won't eat from my breast. She kicks, screams and fights, then finally falls asleep at the breast. It was upsetting me so bad, that we've just decided to stick with pumping. But I'm feel good about my decision. She is getting breast milk, and she's gaining weight, and she's happy.

crazy busy as I prepare to go back to work next week (oh no... need to buy lottery ticket and win so I don't have to!!!)

G has a rash as well... started on his face and spread to his ears, neck, shoulders and back. I don't eat a lot of dairy but I asked the ped anyway and she said it was infant eczema (D had it too)... she said:
switch to a milder soap (Cetaphil)
slather moisturizer on him
keep him cool and dry (heat and sweat also trigger it)

His face has cleared up completely (thank goodness) but neck and back taking much longer... :(

oh and G had cradle cap too... I massage his head with J&J baby oil (found olive oil too messy) wait 5-10 minutes and give him a bath (wait to wash his hair last) and wash with Mustela Foam Shampoo which is very good for cradle cap. Cleared up pretty quickly! (Worked for D as well: both sons inherited dry skin from their momma) HTH!

Baby Acne - my son had it and I had read to put breast milk on his face. Sounds crazy but I figured it was worth a shot so I tried it and it cleared up immediately. I applied it with a cotton ball. Now he's dealing with cradle crap, I'll have to try the EVOO (love Rachel Ray).

We went to the Dr's. yesterday. My babies are 9 pounders, he is 9.4, 22" and she is 9.7 and 21.25" at 10 weeks, they're doing so well. I'm thrilled.

swimming - my pediatrician said its fine to use sunscreen, just to try it in a small spot first to make sure he doesn't have a reaction. I have nowhere to take him swimming but when my sister visits in a few weeks with her kids I may dig out a blow up pool and plop him in that. I have some swim diapers my sister gave me (her kids outgrew them) but I don't know what size they are.

Joey is still fighting sleep and wakes up 4-5 times a night. Last night it took about 2hrs to get him down for the night. He takes a good morning nap without a fight but the rest of the day I spend struggling to get him to sleep. I feel like I'm going to lose my mind. :(

Hello everyone!

I haven't been in here for a while. We were away for the long weekend , we left Thursday and didn't get back until Tuesday late. We had another long drive up to MA and the drive up was good but the drive home was another story. Kyle did really well sleeping at my parents house and was completely spoiled by my mom and sister. He was shown off to alot of people and took it in great stride! One downside was though that he got conjunctivitis while we were away so we had to take him to the pedi yesterday morning. We have to put some erythromyocin ointment in his eye which he hates and wears him out. They checked his weight yesterday and it was 10 lbs. 12 ounces! My little boy gained 3 pounds in 6 weeks  I was shocked!

So to do some catching up while he is sort of napping:

baby acne-He has it every once in a while but it usually clears up within a day or two after it first appears so I am not too worried.

Swimming-we plan on taking him to the pool in our development but first I need to get some swim diapers. I think I will just dip his feet in to see how he reacts but we are hoping to visit IL's this summer down at their beach "house" and go out on the boat (of course need to buy a life jacket first)!

Supplementing-I have to say that I have the same feelings that most of you had with having to supplement with formula. I was never able to exclusively breastfeed and have had to use formula from the beginning and got a lot of guilt trips from my IL's and from DH which didn't help at all. I finally said that trying to BF him (had to use a nipple shield) was just not enjoyable for me so I decided that pumping worked best for me although my supply has not been that great. I am hoping to continue to pump for at least 6 months if not a year depending on my supply but I have realized I am doing what is best for him and he is gaining weight and is healthy (with the exception of the conjunctivitis) so I must be doing something right!

Sunscreen-My pedi said any kind was OK just to test it first on him in a small area to make sure there were no allergies. I put it on him all the time especially since skin cancer is in my family.

Stats:
8 weeks
weight: 10 pounds 12 ounces
length: no idea

my boy will not sleep. I try to follow the 2hr rule but it doesn't work. I know he needs to sleep but he won't. I try putting him down before he gets overtired but 2, 4, 5 or 8hrs (on a really bad day) later I am STILL trying to put him down. I'm going insane. And he still only sleeps 2hrs at night although I know he can go 4-5hrs b/c he's done that just a few times. He takes a good morning nap (2-3hrs) but then its all downhill from that. Even if he's had an ok day it can still take 2+hrs to put him down for bed at night. I don't know what I'm doing wrong but I do know that if this continues I will lose my mind. :(

on the bright side, tomorrow is my birthday so DH is taking the day off.

happy birthday tomorrow...it's my bday too!
turning the big 3-0
hope you get some sleep for your birthday.
Well, every kid is different so the 2 hour trick may not work for everyone. Some kids don't need as much sleep. Does joey seem tired after 2 hours? Does he ever give you any sleep cues like rubbing his eyes, yawning or getting fussy?
Some things you may have already tried...swing, vibration on the bouncy seat, vibration in the pack n play. Putting on side, putting on stomach (of course these are up to you and you should probably sit close by with a close eye), driving in the car (as a last resort), stroller walk, sling (love your sling by the way...), bjorn,.. have you tried a pacifier?
I used to take DS for 1-3 hour walks because it kept him sleeping and got me back into my old jeans. ;)

Anyway, just ideas...good luck and happy bday!

Happy Birthday Hapa. :) I'll be 29 so I'm not far behind you.

As far as sleep - sometimes I catch some sleepy cues like yawning or drooping eyes and sometimes I don't. I'm not sure that he's always sleepy within 2hrs but he's definitely becoming overtired and fussy when he's up for too long - which is every afternoon and evening. I think the 2hr rule is really starting to be too much stress for me b/c I panic when he passes that point. I've tried most of your suggestions (except for tummy sleeping, haven't really tried to put him to sleep like that but putting him on his tummy always upsets him) and they all work sometimes but not all the time and pretty much nothing works in the afternoon/evening. I know he's coming up on another growth spurt so maybe thats why he's so terrible these days. I'm trying to take it one day at a time but its still hard and exhausting and frustrating.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JANE & HAPA ! !

Pools and sunscreen: I just asked my Dr. about this 2 days ago. She's against both. She said they can get their feet wet and an occasional very quick dip in the pool. To be aware that they get chilly very quickly and that the chlorine may dry out their skin. As for sunscreen, if I have to use it then okay only because its better than a sunburned baby.

I didn't even bother to ask her about the beach. I'll just bring them there late in the day after most people have gone home and the sun isn't so strong.

Jane Happy Birthday! I hope it is a magically easy sleep day for you. I know that would be an amazing present!

Mel love those pics you posted. you look like such a glam mommy!

Hapa HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!! Hope you are doing something great for the big 3-0!!!

Swimming We did not take Dylan his first summer but he was a later baby, June 29. He went in the pool for the first time at 9 months. I don't think we'll put Katie in the pool this summer. We may go away for a week the end of august, will possibly try it then.

Kopper what a smiley little guy :) you were smart to skip the vaccines before a trip. Dylan was such a fuss after his 2 month ones. You never know how they will react!

ROs how many of you forgot how ANNOYING it is to change a crib sheet with the bumpers on??? Dylan's crib has been bare for so long I totally forgot!

Our ped appt got changed again, so katie will finally be going Monday at 10 weeks 4 days. annoying. especially since I really want her seen since she has been so incredibly gassy. still sleeps great overnight but is all over the place with naps. two days ago she took two 30 minute ones and yesterday napped for 4 hours!
We had a miserable memorial day weekend. we attempted to take both kids away for the first time. what a mistake! Dylan is just too big for the pnp so he did not sleep all night! so we packed up the kids at 5:30am to drive home and get out of there (my FILs house). Then poor poor katie screamed pretty much the whole way home. we stopped 5 times and what should have been a 2 hour trip took 4. she just hates the car. the last stop she projectile spitup all over both of us so we had to ride the rest of the way drenched. I tried singing to her, the paci, my finger..nothing. Oh and DH backed our car into a tree so we have a big dent and I lost one of my favorite earrings on one of the stops. we were so happy to turn down our street! we are not going away again out of our comfort zone any time in the near future!

Happy birthday Jane and Hapa!!!

Sal Sorry about the Memorial Day weekend... we're driving up to Cape Cod next weekend (7 hours) so now I'm really nervous because G also hates the car (I make sure he's asleep before we leave the house but he wakes up and screams whenever the car stops moving). Problem is D sees all the attention G gets when he cries so sometimes he starts crying too... oy

Jane Sorry about the sleep issues... don't feel like you're doing anything wrong, it may just be a phase Joey is going through. We have days like that too (e.g. yesterday, I had to circle the block a few times with G in his stroller before he stopped crying and fell asleep). Hugs to you

jeeplover Hope Kyle's eyes are getting better

swimming haven't taken G swimming yet though might do so when we get to Cape Cod. Have not bought any swim diapers yet though... he's in that in-between spot with size 2 diapers getting a little tight but size 3 still too big

update: we went back for shots today (we didn't get it at the 2 month wbv last time because I wanted a little more time to think about whether or not we wanted the new rotavirus vaccine. any one getting it? DH and I decided against it so we took G in for his other shots today. He was a brave boy until the 3rd shot at which point he had had enough and wouldn't stop crying :( He's sleeping soundly now after crying for a good while (forgot to give him Tylenol beforehand like I did with his brother so I was almost crying myself). Anyway, here are his stats to date:

Birth: 7lb 15.6oz (I just say 8lbs)
4 wks: 12lb 5oz
2 mos 2 days: 15lb 8 oz
2 mos 12 days: 16lb 7oz height: 25.5 inches

Gosh, I feel like I still have a peanut. Marin was 8 weeks on Wednesday and we're still in Newborn diapers and she's swimming in 0-3 clothes. Hopefully she'll start filling out soon.

A quick drive-by...

Happy b'day Hapa and Jane!!

Sal Sorry about the Memorial day trip... Katie is SO cute! We're facing a 20-hour flight in 2 weeks time and I'm a nervous nelly... I can already see the flight attendants handing us 3 parachutes and tell us to "exit" in the middle of the Atlantic...

We're sleep-depraved and somewhat desperate here; here's the story (cross-posted from the Sleep thread):

8 days ago we had a period of 5 blissful days when Anders went down around 6:30 -8:30 PM and slept for 6-8.5 hours straight (first stretch, then 2 x 3 hours). A deep sigh... 3 nights ago all this changed: he goes down alright, but his longest stretch is now back to 2.5-3 hrs, then we get another 2 hours and then he wakes up every. single. hour. Eats (he is exclusively breastfed) for 10 minutes, conks out and goes back to sleep only to wake up in 40-50 minutes. These hour-long stretches start around 3 AM -- needless to say that I am exhausted... -- and last until 7 or so when he is up and alert, ready to start his day. I'm not sure if this is a growth spurt (isn't it a tad early for his 6-week spurt?) or whether it's a sleep-related problem. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!!! I've just re-read what Weissbluth says about weeks 5-6 and I'm slightly puzzled: he seems to suggest that with the first social smiles arrives the more organized sleep pattern and also that "your baby now starts to fight sleep"? Amazingly enough, DS's first social smiles did coincide with the longer stretches (first stretch) of sleep, but these two statements seem to contradict each other -- what am I to expect? And more importantly, what should I do?

Back to read Weissbluth...

Jennifer-Don't worry Kyle is 8 weeks as well and he is still wearing newborn diapers as well and 0-3 month clothes are still big too!

Shania-Have fun on the Cape-which part are you going to? I was in Dennis last weekend (that is where I grew up)! Thanks Kyle's eyes are starting to look a little better but the ointment makes them look so bad!

uskiku-Sorry to hear that Anders is not sleeping well at all! I wish I could provide some insight but Kyle is erratic in his sleep lately.

Shots-We haven't really decided what we are going to do yet. I really need to look into this since he is getting them next week!

Sal Oh you can say it :p -- we're just plain stupid or raving mad... Needless to say, we booked the flight long before he was born when it all seemed oh so easy as "they only sleep and eat at this stage" We'll be spending the summer with my parents who are dying to see their first grandchild. though I'm excited about them getting to know him, I feel like I should personally provide the entire flight with free sedatives and ear plugs... I remember so well when I was giving dirty looks to desperate couples with crying infants on long flights, thinking I'll never be one of "those" parents... Serves me right!

Jeeplover Thanks for commiserating with me! Hope Kyle's eyes are getting better!

jeeplover we're going to falmouth. any suggestions for what to do, where to eat? this will be our first time going to cape cod (we usually do berkshires or martha's vineyard when we want to vacation in massachusetts but decided to do something different this time)

uskiku it might not be so bad, I actually prefer flying to driving because you can walk around the plane when the baby starts to fuss, breastfeed as much as you want and there's no such thing as being stuck in traffic :) as for sleeping, yep, sounds like the 6-week spurt! I loved Weissbluth but found a lot of contradictions in his book (one part he said rock your baby to sleep, another part he said don't rock because they might get too used to it  )

jennifer G is the overweight baby. I compared his stats with his brother's (who was not a small baby but wasn't this big) and D was five months old when he had G's 2 month stats

oops, crying baby, have ta run

Sal - I'm sorry you had such a horrible weekend. But that's a mighty sweet picture of your little girl. :)

uskiku - it could be the growth spurt. Joey hit his at 5wks and a few days. Maybe Anders is just a bit ahead of schedule. The growth spurts are rough but the sooner they hit them the sooner it will be over at least. Holy cow! a 20hr flight! wow, you must be going somewhere exciting. Good luck!

Jennifer - I switched Joey to 0-3month clothes when he was 6wks old but he really could have worn them longer. At his 2 month WBV he'd gone for 3rd to 10th percentile for weight. So he's quite a little peanut too.

shania - at 2 mnths Joey got the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (Prevnar), Hib, Tetanus and polio - my dr didn't mention any other vaccines. He was fine after them - I gave him tylenol for 24hrs b/c the Prevnar shot can cause a high fever.

thanks everyone for the birthday wishes and for listening to me vent about Joey's sleep issues. We went into DC today and Joey held up well and by some miracle is actually napping in the swing right now (without a fight!).

Jane - Joey's cute as always! Do you think our little guys look similar? I do :) Happy vey late b-day!

Amy - Little Malin is so cute! I love her full head of hair. Our little guy is bald with a capital B! We also took pictures of him in the lap of the babystyle lamb!

Things are going well for us. The thrush seems to be gone and Ben is eating and sleeping much better. As for me I think I pushed it too hard yesterday with a long walk because now my c-section area is hurting. :( It's so frustrating to want to get back into the swing of everything but to need to take it easy!

Mel not sure because dylan never had anything like that. but he had more hair so maybe it was less obvious. the face looks like what he had at one point though.

Amygrrl Welcome! She is a doll! You are so lucky you can already have fun playing with her hair!

Jane He is really getting such a personality. that middle picture is so cute!

We finally had Katie's check up today. She is such a CHUNK! She is already in size 2 diapers and we are starting to put her in some 3-6 month clothes.
Her 10 week stats
Weight: 13.5 pounds Length: 24"
WOW!
The ped did confirm what we suspected about her non stop fussy behavior and the horrible arching and spitting up, not smiling (except for the two pics I posted)...she has reflux. :( So he gave us a prescription for zantac and he said she should be like a different baby within a week. I hope so. I hate that she is so unhappy. Especially after Dylan who never stopped smiling! So I am going to fill the prescription tonight and fingers crossed that this makes her happier.

Sal - sorry bout Katie's reflux :( As soon as we get confirmation that Finn's insurance is active, we'll be taking him in to the ped and I expect the same diagnosis. The boy is a mess 90% of the time :(

mel - That's what T's head looks like too. And just when I think it's getting better, it seems to reappear. So frustrating. Here's a picture of T's face (of course, I'll be removing this in a day or so since I'm so paranoid.). ;) But yeah, he has a full-on rash on his face. It's starting to dry out though. I hope it will go away. Anyway, here's my little man sporting his acne/rash:

baby acne - Joey seems to be blessed with good skin so far - he sure doesn't get it from me though. I'm breaking out horribly right now - my skins been fine lately so I don't know where this mess is coming from. :(

AF - AF hasn't reappeared so I think that must have been a return of pp bleeding last month. Stinks to have the bleeding restart like that but its better than AF.

Gina - she's adorable!

SaphirimalMei - Finley is so cute. Although I'm sorry he screams so much. :( Joey went through a screaming phase for a few weeks and it was rough - it was linked to the last growth spurt so I'm dreading this next one.

Joey is still a crappy sleeper but I seem to be dealing with it better. Either he's broken me in or I've just gotten used to it. I'm working on having him sleep more in the bassinet and less in the bed - it went well last night although it helped A LOT to have DH take him for 3hrs. :)

Someone else actually noticed that his hair is filling in so its not just wishful thinking on my part. I don't know what he weighs now but he is looking so big to me these days. DH said last night that he's getting so big, we need to have another baby b/c he misses Joey being little. Luckily I think he was kidding - just a few days ago he said he'd rather get another golden retriever than have another baby.

cute pictures everyone. Finley's mad face is still very cute. Sorry he's upset a lot of the time.

Mackenzie had her 2 month WBV yesterday. Here is her stats:

Weight: 2 month: 9lb 7oz
Length: 23"

She's only gained a little bit more but its progress she's now in the 25th percentile for weight, when she was in the 5th.
Also she has slept in her crib for the past week. I'm soo excited. I hope she keeps up her good sleeping habits.
Next week we have an appt with a hearing specialist. She did pass the hearing test that they do when baby is firstborn, but she doesn't respond to sounds now, like snapping by her head, or turning to my voice. She also doesn't coo. So, the pediatrician is sending us to a specialist. I'm a little worried, but I hope everything will work out.

We had DD's 1 month WBV this morning. Everything looks good! Here are her new stats:

Weight: 9lbs 6 oz
Length: 22 inches

The doctor had expected a 1 1/2 lb gain so was surprised to see an almost 2 1/2 lb gain! The boobies must be working! :)

She also had her Hep B vac... she cried a cry I have never heard before... it was the saddest cry I have ever heard. DD cry = mommy cry! Next visit should be fun with 4 shots! :(

I love everyone's pictures of their little ones! So cute!

Jane-That is great about Joey's hair coming in more! And sorry his sleep isn't good still and I hope that your adjustment doesn't have to last too long!

briamcd-Good luck with the specialist next week! I hope that it isn't anything serious at all! That is great that she is sleeping in her crib, we haven't tried having Kyle sleeping in his crib at night yet.

MMH-Oh poor little Ainsleigh, I hated when Kyle got his first shot I was so upset now I have to gear myself up for his 2 month shots on Friday. That is great that Ainsleigh is growing so well!

Well tomorrow is the last day of putting the ointment in Kyle's eyes-thank goodness! He turned 2 months yesterday and we have his 2 month WBV on Friday which I am not looking forward to with all his shots! Nice photos of adorable kids, everyone (acne and all) :)

briamcd good luck at the specialist! Hope it will turn out that there's nothing to worry about afterall. The ped also recommended that D (my 19-month-old) see a specialist because he's not saying many words. I was freaking out after the appointment but have calmed down a lot now after reading tons of books and websites and learning that speech comes slower to babies in bilingual households (we speak three languages in our home). I have made an appointment with the specialist and I'm hoping against hope that he will say DS is perfectly fine and he's just busy processing all the languages before speaking

Sal hope Katie's reflux gets better!

mel G's acne was like that too and it's cleared up now (except some stubborn ones on his back)

Jane we got all those shots too and had to deal with 102 degree fever all night long. The rotavirus vaccine is oral so if your ped didn't give anything orally, then you didn't get it. I'm glad we didn't get it now because no one else seems to be mentioning that their ped recommended it (its a vaccine you can only get at the 2 month visit) and our insurance would not have covered it

So I'm celebrating today. After trying to rock G to sleep for about 20 minutes this morning, I put him down in his bassinet to use the bathroom and he was asleep by the time I got back! :) So I decided to test it out again for his afternoon nap (in case it was a fluke) -- I put him down in his bassinet and patted his back for a minute then left the room. I went back five minutes later and he was sound asleep!!!! Both times he slept for about an hour so I'm hoping this continues :D

jeeplover - Kyle looks great with his sideburns trimmed. Joey may be getting more hair now but he still has nothing on Kyle. :p

shania - I'm glad G is sleeping so well in the bassinet for you. Nope, Joey didn't get anything oral so that one wasn't mentioned to me. One of my nephews didn't have many words for a long time, we were all starting to worry but he eventually caught up. He talks like crazy now (3 next month). Good luck with your DS and the speech therapist.

2 month WBV and all those shots - it was rough but we survived it. Luckily the nurse giving the shots understood how hard it is on the babies and the Moms so she gave the shots quickly - it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

I checked out some more sleep books from the library today. I really need to get Joey sleeping better soon. My sister is coming to visit (with her two kids - 18 months and almost 3) the week after next so soon my house will be a zoo!

SaphirimalMei - That last pic is so funny! Hope you don't have too many of those moments!

briamcd - Hope it's good news at the hearing specialist.

jeeplover - Too funny that your DH cut Kyle's sideburns. He does have a nice head of hair!

I went swimsuit shopping the other night. How depressing! My bbs are so big so I need something with support. I ended up with a tankini that seems to support and cover the bbs and it covers my stomach. As soon as I got home I told DH that as soon as we're done having kids/bf, I'm getting another reduction and a lift. I want to be a B/C cup and be able to wear cute tops.

quick post...

Jennifer yay for a sweet smiling picture!

Shania Dylan has been seeing a speech therapist for 6 months, he had no words at 15 months. Not even mama and dada. He has been doing great with her and LOVES when she comes (right to the house for free through the state). Now he even says KAYdee and has about 30 words! He is still behind but is improving every day. So don't worry. I also think boys are slower talkers!

Briamcd lots of luck at the specialist!

Jeeplover so funny how some of the babies are bald and then some like yours have this full head of hair! so cute!

Jane that picture is so funny!

I forgot to mention that Katie took two nice naps in her crib yesterday. One 3 hours and one 1.5 hours! I don't know if that is the zantac working already and helping her be more comfortable laying down or the effects of the shots knocking her out. whatever - I was grateful! and this morning I put her in her crib awake and she played and sucked on her hand for 15 minutes and went to sleep!! She has been sleeping in her crib for 30 minutes now. WOW!!!! And her amazing overnight sleep in continuing. three nights ago she went from 10-6 then to 8:15!

bria - Yea! for sleeping in the crib. Ben will barely take naps in there. Best of luck with the hearing apt next week.

MMH :) for the BB's working! I felt the same way when I found out Ben was a little fatty. Sounds like you handled the shots drams well. I am making DH go with me for our because I know I will be so sad.

Jeep - Love the new pics! Were you all having a little fashion show ;)

shania :) for sleeping in the bassinet! That is great progress I know. Ben has only taken a few real naps in his crib so far. Hope this keeps up!

Jane - Glad the shot experience wasn't too bad and I love the pic of Joey and the dog!

Jennifer - Swinsuit shopping - blah! I went at 3w pp because I was determined not to be depressed all summer. My bb's were so big I had to get the top 2 sizes larger than the bottom and it is still small. I am all about the lift one day!

Sal - Another yea for cib naps! Hope some on your good fortune rubs off on us soon!

The twins are doing great! They are now 2 mos old and about 10.5 lbs. They are not sleeping great and are still only about 3-3.5 hours between feedings.

They are both smiling a lot, laughing a little, Cole is vocalizing a bit and is super strong- at least compared to Paige- he can push up on his arms already, loves to "stand" and has rolled from front to back once and can climb up and over his boppy. Needless to say we don't leave him alone anywhere anymore except the crib or strapped in the swing. Are any of your babies moving around yet? Paige isn't at all. She will pick her head up when she's on her boppy or laying on her tummy but she prefers to be on her back.

Unfortunately I only have another month before I have to go back to work. Is anyone else going back or are you all going to be SAHM's?

Here is a recent pic of my two "monkeys".

We made it back! Granted it took 12.5 hours to get there when it normally takes 8 but we made it! Jacob did so well and everyone was suprised at what a good baby he is. He had his first shots today. He is a bit fussier than normal but I think everything is ok so far.

Great pictures everyone! Hope I can catch up soon. Jacob is hanging out in his crib talking to his mobile. :)

G slept throught the night for the first time! :D I put him down for the night at 9:30pm and he woke up at 5:50am (which I suspect was because his brother woke up crying around 5:45am and DH had to go and get him). I fed him and changed him and we played for about 30 minutes then he fell back asleep and woke up at 10:30am!!! I was so happy, I was dancing around the house (with my incredibly engorged boobies :D ) Of course DH had to rain on my parade by saying, "It's time to move him out of our room into the crib." I've been dreading doing this because 1) G does not nap as well in the crib as he does in the bassinet so I'm afraid his night sleep will be worse in the crib but as DH said, he has to get used to it first; 2) the crib is in D's room and we finally got D (who has always been a terrible sleeper) to sleep through the night and I'm reluctant to have G go in there and disrupt this.... oh well! I refuse to DTD with DH with baby in the room so he's putting his foot down because my excuse has always been "let's get G to sleep through the night first" :p

jrsygirl G moves around a lot (one of the reasons the doctor ok'd tummy sleeping) and loves to "stand" too (he cries when he's doing the standing thing and we make him sit/lie down because he's too young to stand). I am going back to work too (on Monday... so sad... love my job but will hate being away from the kids because I've been home the past six months and really enjoyed bonding with both boys)

Sal Seems like our babies are on the same sleep calendar :) G has discovered his thumb too and loves to suck it, much to DH's chagrin (DH still worries that our first son who has almost sucked the skin off his right thumb will never give up this habit -- even brought it up with the ped who said "leave him alone, he has enough to deal with with a new brother" which was not what DH wanted to hear!!!) I say, if it soothes them and helps them sleep through the night, it's ok with me. Thanks for the speech therapist support. The fact that Dylan loves his therapist and it is helping is very comforting (I come from a place where the word "therapist" evokes deep shame and implies that you've failed somehow: I thought I had overcome all that until the ped mentioned the word!)

jennifer lol about the bbs! I went from a B cup to D cup during first pregnancy to F cup when milk came in  I never went back to original size because I was still breastfeeding when I got pregnant again. I can't wait till I go back to B/C when I can wear cute little tops and go running!:)

jrsygirl - it looks like Brody does very well with your babies. Butter is still all puppy so I have to really watch him close with Joey and its exhausting. He's not at all vicious with him, just too exuberant. Your babies are adorable! :)

Kopper - I'm glad you made it home in one piece. :)

Shania & jrsygirl - good luck going back to work.

thumb sucking - Joey sucks his thumb a lot too. I think I was 4 when my Mom told me I could only suck my thumb when I slept and then the next year she told me I was too old and couldn't suck my thumb at all. For some reason I totally did what she said even though I very badly wanted to suck my thumb. My sister on the other hand had to be hit by a car before she'd quit (it messed up her mouth - but she's totally fine now).

I'm so jealous of the good sleepers. Oh well, one of these days Joey will get there too. Can't believe he'll be 12wks old tomorrow! :D

Ainsleigh finally took from a bottle! Here is the story...

She was napping, daddy comes home from work so mommy runs to the market. I call DH from the market to ask him a question and I hear Ainsleigh screaming in the background. DH is changing her diaper and I know she is hungry (she had been napping for 3 hours) so I finish at the market rush home. I expect to open the door to hear crying, but to my surprise it is quiet. I look on the couch and DH is feeding her a bottle! He took an oz of milk out of the fridge (cold) and she took it. So we give her another 2 oz and she takes that too! DH starts dinner, I pump, and then I feed her another oz! 4 oz total! I am so proud of DH for trying and being successful and so proud of Ainsleigh for finally accepting the bottle!

Successful bottle = Playtex!

Happy times in the H household!

MMH you have no idea how great that really is. I think a lot of times when the mom is BFing, husbands do not take initiative like that. HUGE CONGRATS on such a successful evening. And I will be going tomorrow to get a playtex bottle now that Katie has rejected Avent!

Shania Congrats! I am going to try to PM you in the morning while katie naps.

WOHM - I have to return to work June 30th. I am dreading it, I wish I could be a SAHM. I'm going to pop into the office a couple of hours a week whenever I want (night, weekends, whenever). I already did 3 hours, they'll pay me as a consultant and I felt I wouldn't feel so overwhelmed my first day back. I know I'll be in tears just leaving the babies for the day so why not make it easier by easing into it a bit earlier. The office is just 10 minutes away.

FATHER'S DAY - what are you all planning to give your dh's. I just ordered a mug from shutterfly. I was hoping to be a bit more creative but my time is limited and just placing that order, along with cropping some pics for me, took too much time. I'l also give DH a card from me and one from the twins.

Marin had her 2 mo check up today. She's up to 9lbs 11oz! She's still pretty low on all the charts, but I'm so happy because we're almost exclusively BF. She gets about 2 or 3 bottles of formula a week, but I'm going to up the Fenugreek to see if that will help with my supply.

2 mo:
weight: 9lb 11oz
lengh: 21inches (I always question this because how they measure her is so sloppy. I wish there was a more accurate way to do this.)

Father's Day - not sure yet. DH mentioned a tool chest for the garage, but who knows. We have to have our a/c replaced today, so that's costing some serious $. We may just have a quiet family dinner and I'll help Caden make him a card.

relly - Those pics are so precious.

My parents offered to take Caden to Kings Island after his nap. It's so freaking hot here, but I know Caden will love it. I'm just trying to decide if I want to tag along. It would be fun to see him enjoy the rides, but a night with just DH and Marin sounds heavenly!

Have a great weekend!

trying to catch up

Jennifer - Good for you for sticking with BF! That's great she is gaining even if she's still a little small.

Relly - The new pictures are adorable! Sorry work is coming so close, I would be a mess too. I miss Ben when he is down for a nap and am always checking on him. 10 min away is close though :)

MMH - Wow your DH is awesome! Glad you found a bottle she likes!

Father's Day - No exciting ideas from me yet, I'll have to steal from you all!

Bottles - Ben was so so on the Avent, but it a big fan of the Dr. Brown's.

Sleeping - I think we are having some issues. Ben hates his crib and will only nap in his swing or boppy. He is also still mixing up his days and nights. Still it's so hard no to smile even when it's 4am and he is happy and wants to play. My question is at 6w should I be worried he hates the crib? I put him in there a few tiimes a day, but it rarely last for more than 5 min. I've let him cry a few times, but he only gets more and more upset. I need to get a book on this!

Jennifer - Joey weighed 1 oz less than that at 2 months! He was 12.5 lbs using my inaccurate home scale yesterday (but thats with a diaper and clothes on too). He'd managed to move up from 3rd to 10th percentile at 2months so I guess thats progress!

bottles - Joey will take Avent and Dr. Brown's and has no preference, never tried anything else - my sister gave me the bottles as handmedowns so we started with those brands.

Father's Day - DH just got a copy of that collage I made of Joey and I'll frame one of his recent JC Penney portraits (pick those up next week) for his office.

sleeping - Joey still doesn't sleep well and struggles with all naps so I am no help Mel. :(

Mel what do you have in the crib? do you have an ocean wonders aquarium? it put dylan right to sleep and now does the same with katie. What about swaddling? Katie likes to be swaddled on the bottom with her arms out. We also use a sleep positioner and with the swaddle I think that helps her feel more secure in the crib. I place her on her side, swaddled, in the sleep positioner facing the aquarium and that does the trick! also, do you put him in awake? I find if I put her in asleep, she wakes and cries. If I put her in awake and shush her to the ocean wonders she falls asleep and stays there. Hope something works for you soon!

Jennifer great news about marin's checkup!

Father's day DH is getting a shutterfly photobook of him and dylan over the past two years. I love how it came out. :) From katie he is getting an I love Daddy frame with a picture of her in it

Relly great pictures!

Sal - Right now he has a mirror and a sleep sheep on the end of the bed. We'll have to try somethine more exciting in his crib. I bet that would do the trick because he loves the mobile on the swing. DS hates to be swaddled, but he does like to sleep on his side with the positioner. We're getting something FP this weekend!

Jane - Joey is too cute in his bumbo! I bet in another month he will sit in it just fine.

Father's Day - Thanks to relly I checked out Snapfish for gift ideas. I ordered this mug since DH drinks coffee in a travel mug everyday! The picture is from when DS smiled for the first time. It was only $20 w/shipping due to the sale.

Ben hates his crib and will only nap in his swing or boppy. He is also still mixing up his days and nights. My question is at 6w should I be worried he hates the crib?
No it's not a problem. Many babies hate their crib when they're young b/c it feels so big to them and they prefer something more confined (which a swing and boppy provide). DS hates sleeping in his cosleeper b/c it feels too big to him, but he sleeps well in a snuggle nest that we put in his cosleeper b/c he's more confined that way (he also doesn't really like the swaddle). What matters at this point is that he sleeps--not where it happens :).

And in terms of days and nights mixed up, what is a typical night of sleep like? Like here was DS last night: Down at for the count at 9, woke to eat at midnight, 2am, 4am, and 6am. Then up until 8am when he took a 45 minute nap. Then at 9:30 he fell asleep for his long morning nap and woke up at noon. (DS doesn't really 'wake up' during the night--he just stirs to eat, i feed him, and he goes back to sleep right away). I'm happy with his sleep and don't feel like i'm tired or anything, and i try to nap at least once every other day.

WTG!!! From one BFAR mom to another that is so wonderful! I know how hard it is. Jacob still gets 5-7oz. of formula per day in 2-3 bottles but I'm happy with that. He is gaining on average 1oz per day. How much fenugreek are you taking? I'm taking 4 capsels 3x per day. I'm also taking 20mg of domperidone 4x per day plus alfalfa, marshmellow and blessed thistle.

Father's Day - DH got a new computer 2 weeks ago for Father's Day.

Trying to catch up here after being gone. Cute, cute pictures everyone! :)

Shots - We did two this week and will do two next week. I forget which ones though.

Sleep - Jacob does ok. Today he only took 45-60 min naps but he usually takes two hour ones. We were at a friend's house all day so that could be part of it. At night he goes down around 9 and wakes up around 12. Then he is up at 3 and 6 and then for the day at 8 or 9am. He has been waking up more often at night recently. He doesn't really get alert he just roots around and I feed him and he nods off again after 10-15 min. Speaking of sleep, he has started to be really bad about letting me nurse him laying down. He will kick and start fussing after a bit unless I sit up. I don't know what the deal is because he didn't have a problem with it until last week sometime. Any ideas as to why this is happening?

Oh, no crib sleeping. I'm such a bad momma, I haven't even tried to put him in there for naps. I'm really starting to think that we will be co-sleepers and he won't sleep in the crib at all. DH would probably rather we not but I like him sleeping in our bed.

Work - I put in my notice on the 31st so I'm officially a SAHM for now. A recruiter called this week for positions in my city. Sounds interesting but I can't leave Jacob right now.

father's day - i got dh a 'manly' diaper bag so he doesn't have to carry my pink one all the time. and several daddy children's books and a couple of daddy tshirts.

sleep - malin is still figuring it out. her first night time stretch is usually between 4-6 hours then she's up every 3 hours. when she goes down after 8 or 9 pm it's great. but sometimes she goes down at 5 pm and my long stretch of sleep is wasted in the early evening. her napping has gone to crap. she'll go down to nap, but she just won't stay down and will be up after 10-20 minutes. she'll do this several times a day. at first i would try over and over to get her back down. that made both of us miserable. now i try once. if she doesn't go down quickly or wakes up again after another 10 minutes i give up. over the 4th of july holiday when dh has several days off we're going to do sleep training and try to get her sleeping in her crib and if that goes well, putting herself to sleep so we don't have to rock her for a million hours. we need to discuss if we're going to let her CIO then as well.

Sleep Once we actually get Ainsleigh down at night her first stretch of sleep is 4-5 hours and then it is every 2-3 hours after that. It is getting her down to sleep that is the hard part. For example the last 2 nights we have she has fallen asleep in her swing around 9pm so I put her in her bassinet only to have her wake an hour later. She will be awake for a 10-15 minutes, fall back asleep only to wake again an hour later. This usually goes on until midnight or so. I know she is tired but she just won't stay asleep. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Also at what age do I get her on a schedule where she will get up at a certain time in the morning, take a morning nap, afternoon nap and then go down at a certain time at night? Am I dreaming? :(

My other concern is that I am letting her fall asleep too often in her swing. Should I not be letting her fall asleep in her swing? It sometimes is the only way I can get her to sleep. Also I hear that you should try to put them down drowsy and not sound asleep. This just does not work for us. Any ideas?

Kopper - I was taking 3 capsuls 3 times a day, but I've gone to 4 capsuls 3 times a day. I've also been eating oatmeal cookies throughout the day. I swear it's helped. It's not good for the figure, but I'm more concerned with BF right now. :) I'm glad you're still sticking with it. An ounce per day is great!

I finally turned in my hospital rental and got a Medela double electric. I"ve only used it maybe 4 times and this morning the milk went into the tubing and all the way to the motor. I'm so mad. Poor DH - I had to drag him out of bed to try and fix it for me, but he's telling me it's a lot of work to clean it out. Usually I can get about 6 -7 oz in the morning and now I'm without a pump. I'm thinking of taking it back to BRU and see if they'll let me exchange it for the PIS.

JenniferEC - Thanks :) He is getting 5-7oz of formula per day. I usually eat oatmeal for breakfast or have an oatmeal cookie during the day. Did you ever end up reading Defining Your Own Success? I've been reading it the last two weeks.

jeeplover - I take 4 610mg capsules 3x per day of fenugreek. I think you would have to take them more often to increase your supply. Does your skin smell like maple syrup?

ETA - The book I mentioned above says you can take 2-4 capsules (580-610mg), 3 times per day.

I'm having a hard time keeping up with you guys :p

Bottles - We've only ever used Dr. Brown's and Harrison seems to like them just fine judging by how he gulps :D

Sleep - He only sleeps in his swing. When he was first born, he slept in the crib beautifully for the first few weeks, then bam! no more of that. Now he screams if we put him in the crib. I need to work on getting him used to the crib again - will probably do so in the next few weeks. I go back to work in mid July and would like him sleeping in his crib by then.

Currently, his long stretch of night sleep is about 4 hours, and then it's 3 ish hours after that.

The Pill - For those of you on the mini-pill, does it make you have your period even if you are breast feeding and wouldn't normally have gotten your period back just yet?

Father's Day - My goal is to take Harrison to have his picture made this week and have a frame engraved. I also like the idea some of you had about getting books he can read to DS.

We went to visit DH at the office yesterday, and Harrison put on quite a crying show for DH's co-workers. We're off to a baby shower this afternoon - hope it goes better

MMHinCA: NAK so please forgive any typos. IMO our culture puts forth this ideal of 'good sleep' that is just not realistic for a young infant, and it causes new parents all sorts of angst. If i had a dollar for how often a well-meaning person asks us "Is he a good baby? Does he sleep through the night yet?" i would be a rich woman. (we started getting asked this when he was 4 weeks old! Even though its well known that newborns need to eat about every 3 hours and the majority of babies need to eat at least once or twice a night up until they're 6-9 months, and some for even longer.)

Do you think she's waking up b/c she startles? A swing is more confining so it prevents the 'startle - wake up' routine much more easily. Have you tried swaddling her? Also, i wouldn't worry about her sleeping in her swing. I've read that for the first 8-12 weeks just go with whatever works to get your baby to sleep and as they get older you can focus more on it. If you want to work on something you can try to see if she'll stay asleep with the swing turned off.

Does she need something to suck on? My DS won't take a pacifier either, but i've found that if i cuddle next to him and let him comfort nurse he sleeps 2x as long b/c he has something to suck on and that helps him stay asleep (so i use that time to catch a nap myself or read). Maybe she would suck on your finger? Once she can bring her hands to her face (around 3 months) then she'll start sucking on her hand for comfort most likely.

DS would *only* stay asleep if he was in our arms his first month. Then his second month he would nap in my arms or in the swing, and at night slept either on top of us or next to us. Now he's in his third month and if i wait until he's realy asleep i can put him down alone and he'll stay asleep (something he would *never* do before). He's grown into doing this on his own and i just had to be patient with it. I wouldn't be concerned with putting her down drowsy either--she's a newborn and there's nothing sweeter than holding your sleeping baby :). A lot of the sleep questions you're asking apply to older babies 4 months+, so don't worry about it now or it will just make you feel unecessarily anxious.

I'm not one who believes in putting babies on schedules, as i think they put themselves on a routine on their own that i should use as my guide (i.e., DS has just started going down for a morning nap between 9 and 9:30 so now i look for his sleepy cues around that time and get him down to sleep then, but he has no set afternoon nap routine so i just follow the '2 hour waketime' rule for when he should sleep the rest of the day). I think babies put themselves on a more set schedule between 4-6 months.

I personally look at this time when ds's wake and asleep times are more flexible as really nice-b/c i don't have to make sure i'm home certain times during the day and early at night, he's flexible enough still to roll with being out later or going shopping all afternoon and catching a nap whenever he's tired.

HTH reassure you!

MMHinCA

SevillaI am not sure why she wakes? For naps and at night we swaddle her so I don't think she can get too startled. Maybe it is the motion of the swing or me rocking her that gets her to sleep and then we she realizes that has stopped once she is in her bassinet she wakes?? I'm not sure! That is not a bad idea to try to see if she will stay asleep after I turn the swing off.

As far as sucking... she will not take a pacifer. I am not concerned about her length of sleep (as she will go down for 4-5 hours at night) as I am about getting her down to sleep (and staying asleep). I could try to have her suck on my finger if she wakes up shortly after me putting her in her bassinet. Maybe that would put her back to sleep without me actually getting her up out of bed.

A lot of the sleep questions you're asking apply to older babies 4 months+, so don't worry about it now or it will just make you feel unecessarily anxious.

Thanks for the this reassurance. I had figured things would get better as she gets older, I just wanted to make sure there wasn't anything I should be doing differently now.

As far as a daytime schedule I pretty much let her do her thing and I follow her cues (which is usually the 1 1/2 - 2 hours waketime). It is more the bedtime schedule I would like to work on, getting her to go down at a certain time.

Thanks for your thoughts. I appreciate reading what other mother's think and what they are going through! :)

MMH: That makes sense about her needing the motion to stay asleep. I found that with DS too, he would sleep for a couple hours in the sling or swing b/c he had the motion to help him stay asleep (sort of like they're rocked to sleep by the motion of our bodies in the womb). Now at almost 3 months he's growing out of needing that motion. If the swing helps her go down then i'd use it. That's wonderful how long she sleep for! Have you read the Weissbluth Sleep book? I think you might like it.

sleep - well, miss malin may be turning the sleep corner. she went down last night at 8:30 pm and slept until 4 am (7.5 hrs!) then was up for a quick snack and went back down again for another 3 hours. her morning naps have been sucking for the last couple of weeks, so instead of fighting her to go down and have her sleep for 20 minutes, i decided that we needed to go get groceries at 9 am. she was an angel in the carseat (usually screams bloody murder) and slept in the store. came home gave her 1 oz of bm and she was out like a light and has been asleep for 2 hours now. so i'm thinking that the 6-8 pm sleep time thing just isn't working for her. on the days where she goes to sleep between 8-10pm, she sleeps much longer. also, i think i need to stop fighting her to nap during the 1-2 hour window and just let her do her thing. it was so much better this morning that way for both of us and she's napping this morning so much better.

bottles we've done dr. browns since birth. (couldn't bf b/c she was so small and i have flat/ inverted nipples so she is exclusive bm from pumping). we love them.

also, something really must be done about my shopping! i am totally addicted to outfitting and accessorizing malin. good thing my friend's baby is 5 wks behind malin so all those outfits will get good use between the 2 kids.

just bumping us up from page 2.

Joey's still not sleeping long stretches at night but I'm dealing with it better than I was before. DH took him for awhile the other night and he ended up sitting in his bouncy chair awake for about 2hrs in the middle of the night. So as much as I appreciate the breaks we're done with those - he can't be hanging out awake in the middle of the night, he needs to learn that night = sleep.

The big challenge will be next week when my sister is here with her kids (almost 3yrs old and 18 months). Joey typically naps in the living room and I just stay quiet and out of his way - but that won't be happening when my neice and nephew are here so I'll have to try to get him to nap upstairs instead.
