Ok girls..my bridal portraits are in 16 days and I am making my veil. What would you do with the ends? I have read the different options but I have no clue what looks best. My veil is ivory with pearls on it. HELP!

I was fortunate enough to have a MIL with a serger. Maybe you can take it to a seamstress to do the ends for you?

Otherwise, I think the nicest looking option is to sew a small ribbon along the edges.

I made my GF an ivory veil with a plain cut edge. Easy!

If you don't have a serger, you could do a ribbon, or you could turn it up twice and hand-stitch the edges. There's no way I would hand stitch that much, so I'd probably recommend gluing a ribbon along the edge - I'm thinking that super-narrow bridal ribbon.

I'm lazy, though ;) and was thrilled that she wanted a cut edge.

You don't have to do anything with the edges, if you don't want to. Tulle will not fray so it can be left just a straight, unadorned edge. No serger or ribbon needed. Frankly since you said your veil was adorned with pearls, I would just leave the edge unfinished. If you start adding edging or lace it may add too much and take away from your finished look.

I just made mine yesterday, and just left the edges cut and unfinished. I like the look a lot better.

Thank you girls! I am now thinking of leaving the edges unfinished. The back of my dress is covered in beads and so I am afraid if I do something to the edges it will take away from the back of the dress. Do any of you have pictures of yours with the unfinished edges?

Well since you asked for pictures I'll show mine off :o

I glued rhinestones on the comb and veil and left the edges untouched so it wouldn't take away from the beading on the dress. I loved my $5 veil :D

My mind is made up! I am doing the rough edges! I love the look!

I like the veils with no adornment on the edges... maybe a little embroidery or something in the body of the veil, but nothing on the edges...

Plain veils seem more classic to me... though I've seen some gorgeous ornate ones - but never ornate ones with finished edges (ribbon detailing, etc.).

Good choice! I made my veil for my wedding. Total cost was like 15 dollers. I had a ribboned edge on mine.

Ok girls one more question? If you made your own veil did you use a plastic or metal comb? Where did you get it?

I used a metal comb I got on eBay.

Originally, I used a plastic comb, but I ended up removing it, and sewing "loops" into the edge of the veil instead, on the advice of my hair stylist. She then fastened it to my 'do with bobby pins, which made it easier to take the veil out when I wanted to switch to a shorter veil at the reception. A comb works just fine, but if you are planning to switch a longer veil for a shorter one at some point during the wedding, you'll have to be careful that the teeth don't create a mess of your hair.

I have purchased metal combs from a milliner's supply store, but they stopped selling online last year. You could just google it and see what you come up with. Some of the online bead stores sell the metal combs for use in tiara/comb making. (Try beadshop.com.)

I had a plastic comb. I don't know where my seamstress got it but I have seen them all over the place (flea markets, grocery stores, dept stores, etc.). My veil was cathedral length with beaded embroidery so it was pretty heavy. The plastic worked just fine and it didn't mess up my hair when we took it out for the reception.

Clear plastic for both mine and the one I made for my GF - got mine at hobby lobby and the one for her at Wal-mart.

If you do a search on 'plastic or metal' in the wedding forum, there was a thread on the pros/cons of each. ;)

Clear plastic I found in the hair section in Wal-Mart. Had no problems taking it out and it didn't catch and pull on my hair when I pulled it out.

Clear plastic from Wal-Mart; I wore my hair down so I didn't have any problems.

The veil I made already had the little hooks that you attach the combs to. I used clear plastic and then my stylist used a few bobby pins to keep snug but at the same time make it easy to take off after we got to the reception.
