I'm in a fruit rut. DH eats apples and bananas, but not much else. I really want some variety, but half the time I end up throwing out whatever I buy (grapes are the worst - one person can only eat so many grapes). So give me some recommendations - what fruits do you absolutely love to eat?

i had the same problem with my FH. so i started making smoothys. he loves them and i can get almost anything in there without him caring as long as i really blend it up. maybe you could try that with the apples and bananas? i would use apple juice, strawberries, maybe some peaches and a bananna. play around with it until you find something he likes :) good luck!!

Pears. I will blow my whole grocery budget on pears, I love them so. I'm also a big fan of nectarines - just a little tarter (more tart? :)) than peaches and not so fuzzy! :)

DH is big on grapes and watermelon. We eat a couple of small melons per week in the summer ... and he brings home grapes at least 3x per week as well. I supposed I should be happy that I have a hubby who likes fruit!

Oh, for grapes - freeze them. Pull them all off of the stems, wash them well, dry them with a papertowel, put them in a Tupperware container and freeze them. THey'll last forever that way and there's nothing better than frozen grapes on a hot summer day. And they make great "ice cubes" in a glass of water or lemonade (I know ... it sounds weird, but try it - it's really good).

I'm a huge orange lover and always love trying different variety oranges - especially blood oranges when they comes out.

I'm never really a huge fan of melons, I just don't think I eat them fast enough.

I love pears too, and asian apple-pears are so crisp and refreshing.

I'm with lawyerlee! Mmm - pineapple and strawberries mixed together! :D

I also love the frozen mixed berries I get at Costco. They're called "Natures Three Berries." Blueberries, raspberries, and marionberries mixed.

I'm also a big asian pear, fuji apple, and red plum eater. anything small, round, and easily portable.

Thanks! You guys have reminded me of a lot of stuff I used to love, and given me some good ideas for new things to try. I don't think I've ever eaten papaya in non-juice form before, so I'll have to check that out. When are they in season? Also, I love pineapple, but don't know how to deal with a whole one. How do you pineapple lovers handle it? And excellent idea about freezing grapes - I like them a lot, but can never eat a whole batch by myself before they go bad.

This is a great start - I'll always take more ideas, though!

I love pineapple, but don't know how to deal with a whole one. How do you pineapple lovers handle it?

Here are some good & easy instructions on how to cut a whole pineapple:

To cut your new pineapple like a local, lay it on its side and slice off both the crown and the stem. Next, stand the pineapple up on end and carefully slice off the skin, from top to bottom, leaving as much flesh as possible. Don't worry about the little eye spots; we take care of those next.

If you observe the eye spots, you'll see that they form diagonal lines around the pineapple. Cut a v-shaped groove along each diagonal line to remove the eye spots.

http://images1.snapfish.com/3469%3A4694%7Ffp344%3Enu%3D323%3A%3E65%3A%3E567%3E WSNRCG%3D32336%3A%3A%3A%3C5767nu0mrjhttp://images1.snapfish.com/3469%3A4694%7Ffp346%3Enu%3D323%3A%3E65%3A%3E567%3E WSNRCG%3D32336%3A%3A%3A%3C5768nu0mrj

At this point, everything left is edible. If you want pineapple circles, cut the fruit in disks and then core each disk. If you want pineapple cubes or wedges, instead cut the pineapple into quarters lengthwise, core each quarter, and work from there.

DH brought home a cantaloupe yesterday. From the looks and smell of it, it's not ripe, but I'm not sure completely. How can you tell a cantaloupe is ripe; and is there a way to help it ripe faster?

The way I've always checked a cantaloupe for ripeness is by shaking gently - when it's ripe, you'll hear the seeds and pulp sloshing inside.

So I bought strawberries and blackberries at Whole Foods on Saturday, and quickly remembered why I rarely buy berries anymore - on Sunday I went to eat some and a few of them were moldy already! I think I'm just going to make a smoothie out of the rest of them tonight, before any more go bad. But it sucks that you can't keep berries for more than 48 hours.

PG-rated, I actually found mold in strawberries the day I buy them. It sucks but I still buy them. If I know I won't be eating all of them before it goes bad and if I have time I would wash and cut them up and put it in the freezer. I usually eat them up the next time I'm making waffles...I love strawberries, waffles, and whipped cream!!!

Grapes...we usually buy grapes at the local farmers market when it's in season. There we can buy as many as we want. I wish the Farmers Market by us is open 2x a week because I love buying fruits there.

I LOVE Pink Lady apples. I'll eat several a day if I have them.

I also like:
kiwi
pears
clementines (but I hate regular navel oranges)
strawberries
grapes
plums

The only way I'll eat bananas is by rolling them in jello powder. I can't stand the texture otherwise.
