I haven't changed my tipping structure in a few years, and am wondering if I'm still current. Roughly how much do you tip your hairdresser? Assume on a total bill of $120.00. I'm in Northern New Jersey.

I've done some quick searches on the internet, but the responses are all over the map. What do you generally give as a tip to the person who cuts/colors your hair (non-salon owner)?

I give about 18% no matter what the price. I also used to give $2-3 to the person who washed my hair, but now the stylist does that too.

I don't usually tip at all b/c my hairdresser is the owner of the shop. Now when I go to someone different I tip around 20%, like a meal.

To get my hair colored, highlighted and cut, it costs me about $95. I always give her $115.00, which is about 20%. She is also the one that washes/styles my hair, and it usually takes about 2 - 2.5 hours from start to finish.

Thanks to those who've replied so far -- looks like I'm still in the range; I generally tip 18%-20%, with 5 bucks to the shampoo guy or girl.

Always 20% with an additional $2-$3 for the shampoo person.

My hairdresser is my cousin, and she gives me a great discount. She charges around $75 for highlights, cut, and style. I usually give her $20-30, depending on if it was a full highlight or partial.

My salon is Arrojo Studio (http://www.arrojostudio.com) and I see a senior stylist for a cut and do single process color - each option costs $96+ tax so it works out to about $100+ for each service. I tip the stylist and the colorist $20 each and the assitant $10. At Arrojo, the assistant offers you refreshments, does all of the color prep, washing and drying so I give more than I usually would.

I try to cycle the services I go in for since $250 per visit every month is a little too much for me (although totally worth it at this place). :)

That is so cool! Do you ever see Nick?

I tip my stylist about 36%, but that’s because I don’t think he charges enough. A wash, cut and style are only $22, and highlights are only an additional $30. He does a phenomenal job. I’ve been going to him for almost 20 years so he knows me and my hair very well. He’s the salon owner, FWIW.

About 20% for each service (cut & color).

I used to tip around 20% (with an extra few dollars for washing if someone else did it). But I've been going to my hairdresser for a couple of years now and she seems to be charging me less and less! She's the wife of a good friend of DH and I guess I'm starting to fall more into the friend category with her as well.

When I started going to her, it was about $100 for a cut and color and I tipped around $20. But the last few times, she's only charged me about $60-$70 for the same services and I still tipped $20.

I usually tip 20%..... even though the prices raised recently and it hurts! I figure your hair is theo ne thing you wear every day right? And you want to be on the ins with your stylist so tipping well is always a good idea:-)

I pay $130 for highlights (2-3 colors, plus a color shine) and a haircut. I tip $30, so 23%. My stylist is the owner but I still feel like I should tip.

I tip 18-20%. I don't usually give extra to the shampooer unless s/he did something extra or I'm in a real long-hair phase - generally I go to pretty cheap places that do assembly-line hair washing, so it's not the most pleasant experience.

I love my stylist. I have been going to her for almost 4 years and I love that I can go in there and just tell her to have fun and it always comes out great.

I do a partial foil every other visit. My visits range from $35-60 dollars depending on how many color mixtures she has to use and if she needed to trim it as well. She also does free bang trims. I tip her $10-15 plus I bring in a coffee for her from Starbucks.

I tip 20% unless they totally screw up my hair. I give $2 - $3 to the shampoo person/ person who brings me wine

/hijack/ ignuttz - i am in ny too and desperately need a new hairstylist. mine has become much too flaky for me. do you just call them and make an appt? does it work like a regular salon? i usually just go to the chain salons, but that isn't working for me anymore, so i don't know how things work at the better places.

Yikes I guess I'm cheap. I always tip 15% at salons and restaurants. I always thought that was standard.

I tip 20% but I don't mind admitting I resent it. My hair is super short, so it's hard for me to feel like a haircut is worth $60 plus 20% tip.

Asha Oh yeah, it's a totally regular salon but it's got a great vibe and really nice staff. Amanda does my cut and I LOVE her, I give her free reign to do whatever she thinks will look best. Jen L. does my color and she's equally fabulous. They're over on Varick street, right off the Houston St. station on the 2/3 line.
