View Full Version : What to wear to wedding?

As a "starving student," I'd like to wear something that's already in my closet to a wedding I'm attending in June. But if I have to get something new, I'd like to start looking now so I can find a good sale.
The wedding is at 5 p.m. in late June. Both wedding and reception are outdoors. The bride is wearing a long silk sheath dress, the BMs are in below-the-knee Ann Taylor dresses, and the GMs are in tuxes. My DH is wearing slacks, shirt and tie.
Here are the options. If I end up shopping for a new dress, I could use some suggestions. :-) TIA!
Yellow silk dress with blue flower pattern (not yet ironed)

Cobalt blue dress—the kind with an inner shell and a shimmery outer layer. The asymmetric hemline is totally a fashion don't, but that doesn’t bother me. ;-)

I think if you really don't want to buy something new, which I can relate to. I'm a poor college student myself. The first dress would be good IMO because it is more summery than the other two.

If the wedding is more formal, I'd wear either of the last two dresses. If less formal, I'd wear the first.
You said outside...so I'm guessing it's less formal, especially with BM's wearing shorter dresses. I think you'd be fine in any of the dresses you posted, but you might want to check on the surface. If the reception or service are on grass, you might not want to wear really high heels.
My best friend is in vet school, too. Hope it's going well! Have fun at the wedding. :)

My own wedding was June 14, outdoors, and at 5 p.m. We had a range of guest attire--but I think any of your current closet selections would be fine. I would go for the black linen, probably.

I would have gone for the first with a blue wrap of some sort.
I think any of them would be appropriate but I would wear number one or two. I don't think you need to go out and buy something new.
If you do want something new, whether it's a dress or shoes, you could try someplace like Mervyn's. Almost everyday they have a sale and at least once a week everything is 40-50% off. They are owned by the same company as Target.

It looks like any one of those dresses would be appropriate. I'd be most inclined to wear #1.

Thanks so much, everyone! I really appreciate the help.
j*east, thanks. Vet school is great, but crazy busy (as I'm sure you know). :)

I like number 2. Formal evening length and color but a less formal material, perfect blance.

I'm a fan of the blue dress :)
I vote for #1. I don't think that the linen and cross-stitch of #2 will be "fancy" enough for an evening wedding. #3 would work well, also.

My vote is for #1 as well...it looks very summery, and can be dressed up or down with accessories!! No need to buy a new dress!!:)

The first two dresses seem like very good candidates for the wedding you described. Since you have two very good options, I would nix the third due to the dated asymetrical style...
Now, on to more important matters! What are you wearing for SHOES ? :)

I would wear the first one. It is really pretty and perfect for a summer wedding.
I'd spend any money you have (if you have it) on a sweater/jacket/wrap that matches or on shoes!

Thanks again for all the help. I think I've decided on the yellow one, partly b/c it fits the best--the others are a tad small at the moment, since I evidently gained the "freshman 5," then followed it with about 10 more pounds as a sophomore. Sigh.

I, uh, was going to wear a pair of really cheap silver sandals I picked up a couple years back :o
Similar to this:

But I'm open to (cheap :)) suggestions.
I also was thinking about this wrap, in Cornflower blue. It's on clearance at Ann Taylor.

I was going to say dress #1 with a wrap also, and the wrap you just posted would be great- very pretty!

Perfect! You'll look great.
And I love the blue wrap!
Now have fun at the wedding!

I really like that choice. And the blue wrap will look great with it. :)

I almost bought that first dress! I recognize it. :)
It's really a very pretty gold color, seeing it in person. In my opinion silver shoes would kind of clash- I would try to find gold metallic color.
The wrap would be perfect.
(And I am bummed about the asymmetrical hemlines being a faux pas! Two of my favorite cocktail dresses have them, and it's a great look on someone tall. Sigh.)

I haven't seen the dress in person but I was thinking it would probably look better with gold shoes as well.

Didn't even think of that, since I was just trying to get away w/wearing something I already had, but I'm sure you guys are right. Probably need to get new shoes anyway b/c (as j*east reminded me) we have to walk out into a meadow for the service. So I'll start looking for some gold flats.
Any other shoe color suggestions? Could I get away w/ivory sandals I already have? (I'm guessing that's a no, lol.)
I'm so excited for this wedding that's still two months away! It's so fun helping the bride w/favors and stuff...reminds me of planning my own wedding.

I agree, the silver shoes wouldn't be the best compliment for the dress because of the color, and the chunkly heel style is very dated.
Payless has some very cute dress shoes right now at very reasonable prices. Check these out:

Can I bump this with a question of my own? I'm going to a wedding next weekend, in TX. I would say it's semi-formal, at a ballroom. Is this too inappropriate? It's a low-cut halter (read: no bra) so the back is open to just below the bra line, made of a thin lycra-type material with a beaded medallion in the center. I'll wear a black wrap. I always err on the side of too conservative for weddings, but I'd really like to have a chance to wear this dress.

If so, what shoes? Dressy black heeled sandals, I assume.

Tanya,
I really like that dress and think it is completely appropriate for the wedding you described. I like dressy black heel sandals. That dress would look really good with a mule style, heeled shoe (a non chunky square heel- either in stilleto type heel or wedge.)

Thanks Heidi, those shoes are cute! I'm gonna go look at Payless.
Tanya, I like that dress. I think it would be fine for a wedding.

I'm going to a wedding in a few weeks and picked up a really cute dress at Banana Republic this weekend. I am horrible at posting pix... it is their madras plaid strapless sundress. The colors almost make you think of fall so it is kind of unexpected. I love the top...it has a neat bustline.

I don't love how it looks on the site.....
I'm thinking a strappy black sandal with pearls to be a bit more dressy. Though this is probably a less dressy wedding so maybe black beads......
