I did a search and didn't see anything about cakes...

Anyway, my best friend and I were talking about her DD's 1st birthday coming up in August. She was planning on doing a Luau theme.....pretty simple with decorations left over from a luau themed baby shower her mom is throwing for a friend. This isn't going to be a huge costly affair....but it will have *tons* of people as we live in a small town and her DH is one of 5 kids...all of which are married with kids of their own.

We were talking about birthday cakes and wanting something themed for the party, BUT she couldn't justify spending a lot of money to have some special cake made. Since "aunt courtney" doesn't have any kids yet.....Ella is mine to spoil :D and I've decided that I want to pay to get a really great cake made for her party (as my gift).

I'm looking for ideas to take to a baker so please post pics of your 1st birthday cakes (or any birthday cakes for that matter).

We're going for something similar to these 2:

and

but with monkeys. We're working with the bakers to make it closer to our theme.

I'll admit the hula dancer is a little scary but the idea is cute. :)

wow....those cakes are so cute!

Thanks for the site.....I've looked at it and they have some really great cakes on there (and I love that it has instructions). I'm not much of a cake maker so I would be tempted to just take the picture and instructions to a cake maker and have someone make it.

Keep on coming with any pictures ya'll might have! :)

THANKS! :D

I did a luau for DH's 40th b'day. I ordered a "lilo and stitch" cake from the grocery store, very inexpensive and fun. Excuse the green rectangle, I blanked out the name.

This is not luau themed, but here is the cake I made for my son's 1st birthday party. The "haystack" was his own little personal cake for digging-in time.

The animals were made from fondant that I shaped myself - you can make them days in advance and it's so much fun!
