I just adopted an 11 week old kitten last week from the SPCA. She was spayed about 3 days before we adopted her. The lady at the SPCA told us to keep an eye on her wound from the sugery that if it gets red or really puffy to bring her back in and if she is licking on it to bring her back in. The wound doesn't seem to bother her but it has opened back up. She has this tiny hole in her tummy from where she had sugery. It's still a little swollen but not too bad and a little red. I've noticed some gooey stuff coming out of it. I called the vet today but there not opened. Should I wait and take her in on Monday morning. What will they do? PUt stiches in it? Tell me to leave it alone? How much will something like this cost me? I'm really concerned! TIA!

I would immediately find another vet/emergency clinic who has Saturday hours and ask to speak with one of the doctors. If they feel you should bring her in after hearing your explanation, a emergency vist (around here) cost $65.
while you're waiting, you might consider cleaning the area with a soft cloth and warm water and then cover the area with clean gauze and some small strips of medical tape. You don't want her in the litter box with an open wound.
Good luck!

Thanks! Well she has had this opened wound since last week. It was slightly opened when we took her home but they seemed to think it was fine. I just picked her up yesterday and noticed it was a little more opened. I called the vet and left a message with them but nobody has called me back. I tried to cover it but she pulled it off. What do I do?
Did you call the SPCA? They should have an arrangement with a vet. I wouldn't let this wait until Monday. An open wound can easily get infected or she can get kitty litter in it or something.
If the SPCA can't help you, call an emergency vet. Or just take her to your vet's office.

If she had an open wound that's just not right at all. Jade's tummy was completely closed when we had her spayed and she was fine in 2 days...so a week just isn't right at all. If the SPCA can't help you, call every vet in town until you can get her in!

I called the only vet clinic opened today and it's located an hour away from me. The vet told me that if isn't servere just to keep an eye on her and wash it until I can get her in the vet on Monday. I just don't know what to do. I'm crying and feel terriable like I'm a bad cat Mom. I'm afraid if I let this go something bad will happen to her. I looked at it a few seconds ago and it looks like a stitch is trying to work it's way out of it so I'm wondering if it's closed and just her skin is cut. SHould I take a picture of it and post in on here? I don't know!!! :(
ETA: I tried to wash it a little and it didn't seem to bother her with me touching it or anything. It's not red it's skin colored and just a little oozy. She's playing fine and eating normal. Should I drive an hour to have this checked out? If DH was home Iw ould most defintly go but he's at work.

Okay I called another emergency clinic. The very nice lady on the phoen told me that she had 2 other patients this morning for the same reason. She said if she acts differently or acts sick to bring her in but if she is acting fine just keep in clean over teh weekend and bring her in on Monday morning to my normal vet so taht is what I'm going to do unless I see her acting differently. Right now she is sleeping but was just playing with Max( our older cat) a few minutes ago. Thank you for your help!

That's good. It's always nice to actually speak with someone. Make sure Max doesn't play rough with her until you can take her to the vet Monday!

I wouldn't be too worried. If she's not lethargic or obviously in pain and if the wound itself is not puffy, discolored, seeping fluid, smells bad, or any of those other bad things ... it'll probably be ok. I'm willing to bet that what they'll do tomorrow is clean it and throw another couple of stitches in there. It probably is not completely open to her abdomen or it would have gotten infected by now. I suspect it's just the top layer of skin that was sloppily stitched to begin with.

I agree Karen. DH and I looked at earlier as we were cleaning it and it appears a stich is trying to work itself out. There is a small bit of fluid trying to ooze out it's white not green which is good. It's not really all that puffy and its' skin colored and it doesn't feel hot. Hopefully they'll just have to put a few stiches in it to help it heal.
Thanks everyone for your support, If I'm this worried over my cat imagine me as a mother, lol. But they are my babies.

I don't think it should be too expensive either. Probably just a local anesthetic to numb the area and a couple of stitches like the previous poster. From what you described, I highly doubt it is an infection. It would be pretty painful, and she'd be licking it almost constantly.

I really hope your right. DH is taking her to the doctor tomorrow. It's still oozy today but not as bad.

I'm glad you got to speak with someone in person and that she's doing well.
As for keeping bandages on: when Gordy had his cyst removed last year, we put a gauze pad over the (huge) incision/stitch area and then wrapped the tape around his entire midsection to keep it in place. :D We had to come up with something because he was non-functional with the lampshade. :D

Just realized I never updated this thread...oops! She's doing great. She never went to the vet b/c by Monday the wound was closed. It's like over night she healed up. Now it's just a tiny scab. She is going for her 2nd kitten shot on Thursday so I'm sure they will look at it then. It just looks like a tiny cut in her tummy now.
