Does anyone know if electric fencing is more or less expensive than regular fencing? Also, will it hold a Siberian Husky? I am just now starting to look into doing something like this, but am not sure if it's the best choice for us and also am not sure where I can buy it. Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks. I was wondering if anyone had and personal recommendations. Maybe even some from the state of NC.

We have an Invisible Fence (the actual brand) which is installed by a local contractor/franchisee. I was very satisfied with their service, and the price is negotiable. I would call and chat with them about the usefulness by breed. They seem to really know their business, at least around here.

We looked into and they said there was nothing they could do for our huskey, I think partly I think because he was an adult. If you are considering I would do it soon or else forget it. Also you will have to shave a patch for the electroid thing to touch her skin. Not sure if this is a turn off or not.

We put ours in from Lowes or Home Depot. Pet safe is the brand. I think you can also find it online, Petco, Petsmart. I recommend getting the training collar which is a little more expensive but you can really regulate strength of shock right on the collar. We have two large lab mixes and it works great for them. They really learned quickly and know right where the line is so it is never an issue. I would say total they have maybe been shocked 5 times in 2 1/2 years between the two of them. Most of that was early on at low levels, and sometimes one wants to come through it we are on the other side, so she has been shocked 1-2 times from that (we have her on the training collar so the shock is higher, cause she will take some). She turns right around. Works great for us!!

ETA: We didn't shave a patch anywhere and it works just fine.

I absolutely ADORE our electric fence.

It will hold a husky (there are a number in our area), but you are going to have to do a lot more training with good ol' Sasha and you'll likely have to have a higher level of correction/shock on her (first b/c her coat is thick and secondly b/c our guy told us huskies were tough to contain). If you aren't willing to do the ground work and an intensive month (at least) of training, it likely won't work.

I can't recommend the Invisible Fence people enough. Daisy was not (initially) contained by the fence and they went well above and beyond their commitment in the contract to help us tweak the system to meet our needs. They offer a 100% money back guarantee.

You can find a local representative here: http://www.invisiblefence.com/

(And, uh, *ahem* ya know, if you do go through them, let me know and I'll, um, er, *ahem* give you my name so, ya know, maybe you could say we recommended them and we could, er, um, get free batteries for a year? :p )

I've also heard good things about Pet Safe (I think that's the company's name).

We bought the premier package through IF, which includes 1 year of batteries (for the collar), a collar, a central "hub", and a 10 hour battery back up in case the electricity goes out. That was ~$800. The actual fencing was an additional 39 cents per foot. The regular package does not have the 10 hour battery backup nor does it have the batteries and that was ~$600.

I've heard good things about this company as well. It seems that if you are going to make that investment you definitely want to go with someone who will train your dog, as it makes all the difference. Good luck!

I was totally thinking of something else, so I posted something. Then I realized you were talking about something else so I figured I should at least just put the google link. But now I am wondering if an invisible fence & electric fence are the same thing??

Rose From my understanding, an invisible fence is a wire that runs underground and activates a shocking device on the collar when the dog gets too close to the boundary. An electric fence is visible wires that are most often hung up like a fence (probably in combination with non-electric wires) and will deliver an electric shock to any animal that touches it. So, no, not really the same thing.

Thanks Katia. That's what I thought. My friend had an electric fence for her cow when we were young and it woesn't invisable.

Thanks for the recommendations everyone! Just to clarify I was referring to an invisible electric fence. I think I will contact the Invisible Fence people and see what they have to say. I do want someone that is willing to help train Sasha and I would like it to be installed before summer so I better get working on it! Thanks for you help!

Fuzzy, if I decide to go with them I'll PM you.;)

Ok, I talked to the Invisible Fence people and have scheduled them to come out and install. I hope it is worth it. It's going to cost us about $1000 for about a quarter to half and acre. Wish us luck!

mb--If you haven't signed on the dotted line yet, NEGOTIATE! Their list price DEFINITLEY IS negotiable. I got them down about 30% by paying cash and offering to have a sign in our yard. HTH and that it's not too late.

Here is another thread on invisible fences

http://www.constantchatter.com/showthread.php?t=3447&highlight=invisible+fence

We love our invisible fence from Innotek that we got at Pet Street Mall (http://www.petstreetmall.com). I think with the extra wire we bought, we paid less than $300 to install it ourselves for 1000 sq ft.

Our 15 mos old black lab has never gotten through it. He knows his boundaries and you can't make him even get near it. I've even let him outside without his collar on (by accident) and he won't leave the yard, even when someone walked their dog by our house.

I think the key is to train them young and watch them a lot for the first month or so of training to make sure they never get through.

I was able to negotiate a small price reduction this morning so that was good. We are having it installed on Saturday morning. Hopefully it will go smoothly!
