Hello everyone I am starting Physician Assistant school in May and I just found out that I can get health insurance through the school but my husband and son cannot. The school is 6 hours away, so my husband has to give up his job, and he is unlikely to get one in the new area for various reasons.
Does anyone have private insurance? Do you like it? We are looking at different types and was wondering if anyone had any experience with private insurance.

actually private insurance for children and healthy men is not bad, we have used BCBS. I would probably contact a few health insurance brokers.
The real expense in private helath insurance is females as maternity riders cost alot and you cannot get pregnant for the first 12 months on most of them.
He may also be eligable for cobra from his last job, compare the costs. My husband is self employeed, we ended up going with my benefits but since I only work part time they are very expensive but the cost for me since we want to get pregnant soon was very high.
The only thing to watch is what is the overall cap - some are kinda low so in routine matters no bid deal but a major car accident and 100,000 can go fast. The other ways to keep costs low is to have a high deductible and pay out of pocket for routine visits. Say 5k, so you might pay very little a month but you pay mre for routine visits however if your husband does not go to a doc mre then once a year it save you, however if there was a major medical expense after the 5k you would be covered. a little risky.

Since your husband will not be working and your income will be pretty low, you might qualify for state insurance for your DS. I'd look into that. Then for your husband, if he is in good health and you just need something in case of an emergency or accident, I'd get something that just has coverage for that with a higher deductible for him.
