View Full Version : Co-sleeping parents - a question....

I'm desperate for some quick advice....
We've been co-sleeping for 2 1/2 months. It's been great, but we've encountered a new worry....
To put Naomi to sleep, I'll lay down with her. It usually takes about 5 minutes, then I'll leave the room and continue my evening. BUT now she's rolling around. We've got her penned in with pillows, but I'm very afraid she's going to wake up, push the pillows away and roll off the bed! And what about when she starts crawling? How do you keep baby safe in the "family bed" if you're not in it? I know that bed-rails are available, but that wouldn't work if the kid is smart enough to crawl around it....
Thanks!

i use a baby monitor...i go in the room as soon as i hear her make a move. i also made a great big 8 foot long cylindrical pillow that i put next to her, and while if she pushed it, it would roll off the bed and then DD along with it, i figure it gives me a few extra moments to walk in before she does that. i am up and out of my seat in the next room as soon as i hear her wake up.
my brother and SIL push one side of their bed against the wall so that there's one less edge for them to worry about. i don't know how they make a barrier for the other edge, however.

some people just put the mattress on the floor. we never did, one of us just always went to bed with dd and that was probably the worst part of co-sleeping for us.

Our son is 17 months old and we have a bed rail. I go to him the minute I hear him wake (he usually calls out or makes a noise) so that I get to him before he moves around too much. Prior to getting the bed rail a month ago, we used pillows and we never had an issue with him crawling over or around them.

we put DS to bed in his crib so that he's safe (he's a wiggle- worm) and then bring him to bed with us when we are ready to go to bed.
eta- we had to do this since he will crawl over the pillow barriers.

We made the Wall O' Pillows, but I would keep the door cracked and run in as soon as I heard a peep, so he wouldn't have time to find the edge of the bed.
We actually don't put him in the bed until we go to sleep. We put him on the floor on a folded up comforter (or now we have a crib mattress on the floor by our bed). I just couldn't risk it early on b/c he sometimes rolls around in his sleep and makes not a peep! Now he knows how to get off the bed by himself, but I still feel more comfortable leaving him on the floor. :)

Our DD is 14 months...we usually surround her with pillows when she is sleeping alone, but usually at night, if she goes to sleep before us, she sleeps in her crib or on one of those little foam couches that fold out into a bed, that we keep in our living room.
