We currently have 2 litterboxes in our laundry room and one in the garage (where one of our 3 cats spends his nights). I recently bought a 4th litterbox, and I think that will end up being in the laundry room, as well. I have read that it is better if you can put them in different rooms to give each cat his own "space", but I just don't think that's practical with the way our house is laid out. There is no space for a litterbox in either bathroom, I refuse to put one in the kitchen, and all of the other rooms are carpeted (and I fear accidents on the carpet).
How are yours distributed?

One is in the basement, one is in the guest bathroom. The third one (which we took away because they never used it, despite advice to the contrary) was on the opposite side of the basement.
I also want to have them in uncarpeted rooms. If you are really tight on space, you can use a corner litter box as a supplement. Some of them are too small to be a main box, IMO, though.

Do you have a traditional vanity with doors in either bathroom? In our current house we have space for the boxes elsewhere, but in a former house I had one litterbox inside the vanity cabinet. It was a cheap, ugly vanity with inset doors where the inset part was a separate panel of thin wood just glued/tacked into the doorframe, so I knocked out the inset panel with a mallet. But I bet you could do a cat door instead, if yours will use one.

2 cats, 2 boxes-side by side. I never knew they were supposed to have them in seperate places til coming here! The bathroom I have now has a drawer with empty space under it, so that's where they are.

We have 3 male cats ages 2, 1.5 and one year old.. We have always just had one litter box, the automatic/raking one. They all use it, and don't seem to mind sharing. We empty the collection container about every 2-3 days. I am extremely limited on space, so I keep it behind the couch, no one notices that its there. And it doesn't stink up the house either.
We just got a female kitten a few days ago, and she uses it too. All the cats seem to be ok with the sharing. But when our house is done being built I plan to put another box in the house somewhere.
Also something that I like about the automatic litter box is that the one we have has a paw cleaning ramp. The ramp catches the litter from their paws and falls into a container, not all over the floor.
