My six-month-old has done fine with jarred "stage one" foods - thus far sweet potato, carrots, peas, apples, bananas, and pears. But when I try fresh foods- even if I've put them in the blender until they are the consistancy of the jarred stuff, or mix them in rice cereal - she will literally gag on them and throw up. I've tried avacado and cantelope - same problems.
I can't figure out what the heck is going on here. Any suggestions? Thanks!

DS is also a "gagger" - he would gag on anything with a "strange" consistency to him or on new foods. Sometimes he would even vomit from the gagging (TMI?)....
We just waited awhile before giving him the foods that bothered him and eventually he was fine with them. He still ate some baby food until he was 18 months because he had such trouble with new foods and texture.
I would just take it very slow and if DC gags on something just put it off for a couple weeks and try again. Even at 2 years old - we tried to give him soup the other day with noodles in it and he gagged. When we took it away and we were still eating it - he gagged as he watched us eat it!! Some kids are just funny that way...good luck!

ditto to what dzmattie said. my dd didn't really eat solids until 9 mos old and at 10 mos she would gag and throw up if i gave her something like cottage cheese, about a month or so later she was fine with it.

I could have wrote this post. My little guy is 7 months old. I am at my wits end:confused: & it is soooo frustrating!!! I started with all the veggies and he did alright, but as soon as I introduced the fruits he started the whole gagging. So, we went back to the veggies & he started the whole gagging w/ them. He also throws-up sometimes. He is on formula and according to the dr. he is drinking way too much (about 48oz. per day). We have been trying reg. foods and it is hit or miss. He sometimes likes artichoke hearts (the real kind), asparagus & Greek potatoes. Any other suggestions???
dzmattie & dana b~ While your child wasn't eating where did they get their nutrients from? What I mean is were they bf or ff? If they were ff, how much did they drink?

I remember that we would feed him the solids before his bottle sometimes and when he was more hungry he would be alittle better about eating.
DS liked rice cereal - as long as it was on the thicker side. He did eat all of the stage one and stage two baby foods by the time he was about 8 months old I think. He wouldn't eat cottage cheese or anything with a "different" texture from his baby food. Anything "squishy" or "wet" he wouldn't eat - and it took FOREVER for him to feed himself. He would gag if he got yogurt or food on his hands. He ate the gerber puffs, alot! And cheerios....
I know that he never drank more than 25 to 30 oz of formula a day though - after 8 months - that was when he was exclusively FF. Your doc is probably right that he is drinking too much formula...maybe that is why he isn't receptive to the foods as much? But it can be hard - you don't want to starve him either but you probably want to transition him to more foods!

BuffaloBlondie my dd was bf at the time. i just stuck with the thin stuff that she would be able to eat well. i'm a believer that solids are just for practice and the real nutrients are coming from bm/formula, so i didn't push anything that she didn't seem ready for.

AndreaMMS my mom used to make DD's food and we found that if she didn't boil the vegetables (carrots, broccoli, etc) before blending them that they had a different consistency than the baby food. Even though it looked the same, the consistency was different when we ate it.
Don't know if that will make a difference, but it's worth a shot.
