Hello...
I'm seriously considering making an appt with a nutritionist, but I'm not sure that's really where I want to go... So, if you've been... why did you go? What did you get out of it? Would you go again? And, is it a one time thing, or do you go regularly?
(And, anyone know about what they charge and whats included for that?)..

Thanks
:)

I went to one when I was pregnant and had gestational diabetes. She asked me what I eat on a typical day and made up a sample menu for me to follow as far as the GD went. I only went that one time. Not sure of the cost as it was covered by my insurance.

I went to one for the same reason - gestational diabetes. I met with her once, and she outlined my special diet and showed me how to count carbs and told me about products that I could have in place of what I had been eating.

I don't know how much the nutritionist alone cost since I also saw a diabetic educator, but both those appointments together were expensive - about $500, although insurance paid a lot of it. That probably included my glucose monitor as well. It was also in a hospital, so I'm sure that could have jacked the price up! I'm sure a visit with a private nutritionist wouldn't be quite so expensive.

We have a nutritionist where I work, in a community health center, but she sees patients based on referrals from the providers. She sees mostly pregnant women (both with and without gestational diabetes), non-pregnant diabetic patients, and patients who are overweight.

I went to one. I filled out a questionnaire on symptoms that I have, she asked me what my diet is usually like, and exercise. We talked about replacements for allergens, how much weight lost per week is safe, what it takes to lose that amount. She wanted me to track what I ate and email it to her. She would do a detailed analysis to find what I was lacking--vitamins, minerals... I was supposed to have a follow-up, but I didn't go back. (I started eating like crud after that, so it didn't seem relevant to go tell her I hadn't done anything she had suggested. :p)

We talked about all of my concerns--food and wrinkles, even!

She said some (most?) insurance companies will pay for a nutritionist if it is health-related. For me, it was hypoglycemia. I think allergies and weight problems also fall into that category, but I could be remembering it wrong. I'm sure there are other categories, too.

I think it's a great thing to do. I see a naturopath, and have read a lot about foods and how they affect, among other things, blood sugar levels. He suggested that I go see this particular nutritionist. I didn't go for awhile because I thought it would be a waste of time for me, but I don't think it was. I would go again.
