Just wondering, how many of you out there have applied for a job within the company you were working for?
If you didn't get the job was it awkward afterward?

I have but I actually got the new position.
I think it would mainly be awkward if other co-workers know you are applying for a position. If you keep the issue hush hush and no one knows I don't think there would be that feeling of awkwardness afterwards.

I've just recently applied for a new job not only within the same company, but within the same department. I don't have my interview until next week, so I can't say for sure how it'll work out, but so far it hasn't been awkward at all. I've talked to my supervisor about it and other than that no one else knows (except HR of course). Unfortunately I think another co-worker in our dept. has also applied, so this may turn awkward, but I hope not!
I agree with celica as far as keeping it hush hush, I think that would prevent a lot of possible awkwardness because then no one else knows anything about it.

Thanks girls. I'm trying to keep it quiet, but the HR chick here has a very big mouth, so I'm sure the entire organization knows by now. :(

Honestly, yes, it was awkward. However, it's awkward for me b/c I was offered the job and I turned it down to take the job's counterpart in my current department. Basically what happened is that I applied for a manager job (a promotion) in another unit, had 2 interviews and they were preparing to offer me the job. I went away on vacation for a week, and while I was gone, the woman in the manager job in my current dept resigned. I decided I would rather be a manager in my current department, so I passed on the other job. It's not super awkward, but I feel awkward when I see people from the other job and they tell me that they wish I was working w/ them. I know they are saying it to be nice, but I feel unnaturally guilty about how things turned out.
If I was offered the job and accepted or if I just wasn't offered the job, though, I don't think it would be awkward - it's normal to want to be promoted and to try for that if an opportunity comes along.

Yes, I've done that twice - but have gotten the job in both instances. It's mostly awkward because your boss knows the new boss you are interviewing with, etc. Therefore, they can converse (which they shouldn't) about you as a candidate. And at my company, you have to get permission to post for a job within the company. I've never quite understood that.
