We took Lily to get groomed on Monday and last night we noticed that they shaved off her cute curly whiskers! Is this normal? We have taken Lily there several times and they never shaved them before. Doesn't she need her whiskers? Would it hurt to shave them off?

Before I call I wanted to find out if this is normal.

Thanks,

Karen

In some breeds, it's standard to trim whiskers. ETA - I mean standard 'preference'

I trim my dobe's and it doesn't hurt her and she doesn't need them. That said I don't do it all the time, and they do grow back. Right now she looks like a weirdo and could use a good clean-up.

I would call the groomer (if you take her their often) and have them make a note on your file that you don't want them trimmed.

I think my dogs get their whiskers shaved off all the time...I never thought about it until now! They are poodles and we keep their faces "clean." They don't seem perturbed by it.

The breeder always shaved our pup's face b/c she didn't think that girls should have whiskers.

Pretty standard with cockers, poodles and other dogs where they shave around the face...too hard to get the fur and not the whiskers. It doesn't hurt them at all.

We took our two dogs to a groomer once that did this! Our 90 lb Shepherd Retriever mix was mortified and we never took them back there. They did grow back though. I didn't realize this was common practice. We thought it was weird. I too would just call and tell them it is your preference not to have this done.

It's standard to remove them in St Bernards, too. I like them personally, so I always give clear directions to not touch anything on his head, inclusive of whiskers. They make him look more mature, like the old guy that my dog is :-D

It's pretty common to do this in the dog show world to give the muzzle a neatly groomed look. I don't see the point in cutting the whiskers in a pet though and would just ask the groomers to leave the whiskers next time.
