I have an 8-9 year old beagle mix. Hes never had eye problems until recently and I'm afriad it has something to do with his age.

About 3 months ago it started that he couldnt even open his eyes at all, they were so sensative to the light but the next day he was fine so we didnt think anything of it.

About 1 month ago he had green gunky discharge in his right eye and it was bloodshot, no biggie we took him to the vet and they found he had conjuntavities, aka pink eye, no big deal we treated that with a triple antibiotic ontiment in both eyes twice a day. In a matter of 10 days it cleared up. 2 days later it re-appeared and I thought it had just went dorment and we never really kicked the pink eye. Well my vet looked at it and he saw no infection and assumed it was allergies so he gave us Clemastine Fumarate 1.34 mg 2 times a day, which is an antihestamine, as well as Gentocin Ophthalmic Solution, which treats infections, we were on the eye drops for 10 days and it was treated in both eyes, now we have come to a bad part in the road. He has recently went off the eye drops and again this green gunky discharge has re-appeared but now in the left eye!!

I'm beginning to think that this is not allergy related because if that was the case then the antihestamine would take care of that, but why then does only medacine thats used to treat infections in his eyes work?!? I'm very perplexed as to what may be wrong with him, why does he continue to get these "infections" in his eyes!!

Today we are seeking a second opion because our dog is miserable and my husband is pissed that our vet is treating symptoms and not the problem.

Anyone have any idea as to what this might be?

So yesterday we went and sought out a second opinion on our dogs eyes.

She looked at his eyes and only found inflamation in both of his eyes. She said she really had no answers for us this time as to why they would be inflamed or discharging green gunk, which she did clearly say that is the first sign of an infection. Again the only thing she could tell us that his upper lids are inflamed and his lower lids are REALLY inflammed.

We left the office with yet another bottle of medicine in our hand but this time an ointment with a steroid in it. Told us to go through two tubes of this, which is one months worth and come back if there is still problems!

I'm seriously pissed off about this and think I will be making an appointment within the next week to take him to the opthomologist. His eyes have had this "conjunctavities" in them for over a month already and the last thing I want is for my dog to suffer any vision loss. I just want him to be as comfortable as possible.
