My husband will be getting a job in North Carolina, near Greensboro. I know nothing about the area and was wondering if anyone out there can give me some info. We need to know about school districts, taxes, housing costs, weather, good neighborhoods, crime...etc! We are in our mid 30's with 2 girls 6 and 4 and from New York! I'd appreciate any help! Thanks:)

I recently moved to NC, though not to Greensboro. I really love it out here, and I'm sure you will, too. I don't have any info on where you're moving, but maybe you can PM Southerner. She lives in Greensboro.

Good luck with the move!

I grew up in Greensboro. I might not be able to answer all your questions, but I can try or point you in the right direction. Fire away! :)

Well.... short version, 2000.

Long version - grew up in GSO. Went to boarding school in PA for high school (greensboro's not known for it's schools, at least not then). College in NY state. Grad school at UNC for 1.5 years, then grad school in SW VA. I've been living in MD since 2002. My mom still lives in GSO though, so we're down there several times a year.

I lived right outside of High Point for about 5 years (1 year of middle school and 4 years of high school), so I might be able to help with Randolph county a bit.

I grew up in Randolph county as well, so I might be able to help. I also know a lot about the Climax/Pleasant Garden area :)

Southerner...
I got your PM, thanks for the websites! My husband got the job and has already moved. We are waiting until school is over and our house is sold. I've heard so many great things about Greensboro. My husband teaches tennis and I want to teach high school English, I have to find out what I need to do for that. Do you live right in Greensboro? Are there nicer areas or smaller towns outside of Greensboro? I'm not sure where to start looking for housing?

Hedwig, Congrats to your DH on getting the job. I hope you're excited about moving here. As for real estate, I guess it depends on 1.) what you're looking for (new construction? older home?) and 2.) where y'all will be working and how far you're willing to travel. Are your children going to be in the public schools or private schools? If private, then it won't matter as much where you end up. The Guilford County Schools website I sent you has good info. Check out the school report cards. Do y'all prefer to be in the country or would you like to be closer to town? Do you have an agent yet? Since your DH is already down here, he could get a head start on looking at houses. We'll be able to help you if you provide more specific info.

Just chiming in that I've lived in Greensboro for 13 years and just recently moved 20 minutes away. I'll be happy to help all I can, though I'm sure Southerner can answer all your questions. :)

I'm not so sure I could kick your butt :) Technically I never lived in greensboro - we actually lived in Jamestown :) But no one knew where that was, and we spent all our time in greensboro anyway

Are you here? What are your impressions so far? Where did y'all end up buying?
