I get that the book jumps around from Jane's different ages. I'm at the chapter where "Nina" is talking about her son Barney. I originally thought that it was Jane when she was a mom, but it can't be, since the woman introduced herself as Nina. Who is this? I'm very confused.

I don't have the book (sent it to my mom to read, because I had a question about what sounds like the same chapter!) -- is that the chapter where it's a family dinner, the mom is divorced, and there's adult kids, one with a fiance/e? If so, the best I could figure out was that Jane was the downstairs neighbor, but its relevance confused me ... so I sent it to my mom. I hope someone else responds! :)

Yeah, that's the one! Barney has gotten two girls pregnant, and I don't understand who "Nina" is, and why it's important.

I didn't quite get the relevance, but yes - Nina Solomon is the neighbor, and she's mentioned by Jane's aunt in a previous chapter. (Page 80 in the hardback version.)

It's kind of an odd story to put in there and it messes with the flow of the narration, but I think the author was trying to add another layer and nuance of being a woman, the complexity of relationships, etc.

Ah! Thanks for the explanation!

Thanks from me, too. :)

Glad my thoughts helped - of course, they're my thoughts - who knows what the author was actually thinking?!

BTW - did you know they're filming this right now? I think Sarah Michelle Gellar is playing Jane, which is honestly kind of weird for me. I'm a huge fan of Buffy, and I can't picture her as a slightly neurotic and insecure chick-lit New Yorker.

I really liked this book and waited anxiously for this author to put out another one. When years passed, my friend called and said she read her next book and was very disappointed. I didn't read it.

However, I am thrilled that they are making a movie and SMG is in it. I agree I can't see her as that character, but as a Buffy lover, I'm glad to see she is still getting work.
