My DH's niece is going to have her First Communion next month & I need some gift ideas. She's 7 years old. I'm not Catholic (Presbyterian) so I don't know the proper gift for this occasion. TIA.

How about:
Savings bond
Check
Necklace
Bracelet
Earrings (if she has her ears pierced)
Gift card (Old Navy, Gap Kids, Target, Toys R Us?)

All of Julie's ideas are great, I personally give savings bonds b/c when I was a kid that's what I got all the time, and boy was i GLAD to have them when I grew up, wait, i'm STILL growing up :D
I usually throw in a toy or something I know the kid enjoys, or whatever is "in" with kids then, so they have something fun to use now, but usually I get a savings bond, really easy, just pick up the "application" at the bank and give the parents/kid the little temporary cert that comes with the application that tells you its on its way.
Simple pimple :)
not catholic but our next door neighbor had his first communion last year. he got cash from pretty much everyone (at least $20 per person/couple/family). he was 8 at the time, i think. he LOVED getting cash and was adding it all up as he was getting. lol

Thanks ladies for all your suggestions. I knew I could rely on you to come up with some cool ideas. I'm going to go with the savings bond & necklace as her gift. Thanks again for your help. You guys are awesome!

For the necklace, I would not go with a cross. I received sooo many at my first communion that they got shoved in a drawer and never looked at again. I keep and wear only one of them.
I did get a birthstone necklace, though, and I still wear it to this day. It was probably a little bit grown up for a 7-8 yo. but I very much appreciate it today and it's one of the few gifts I still have from my first communion (the others being my rosary and that one cross).

I like the idea of an add a pearl necklace. That's what I recieved from my parents for my first communion, and I still get pearls from people to add on.

If you're still looking...
A nice bible and maybe a rosary would be appropriate. Personally, I think this event should be more focused on God and not be a toy giving event. I think a savings bond or cash is appropriate, but personally I wouldn't give a toy. Toys are for birthdays and holidays. This is a religious celebration.
I'm not knocking anyone who would give a toy (I got toys at my first communion). This is just my opinion.
