At 8 weeks, Raymond was 22 1/2 inches and 10lbs 4 oz. We go for our three month wellness check up on April 3.
quick back ground Raymond was born 6 weeks early and it was a blessing in disguise bc the doctors discovdred he has a condition called Central Diabetes Insipidus (nothing like the sugar diabetes). Go to diabetesinsipidus.org. But he's doing great. There is some more info on him in my journal. I will post pictures very soon.

Question, we are starting to introduce a bottle in prep for when I return to work (at 13 weeks), we are having a really hard time. Have been trying like 3 different nipples/brands. Does anyone have any stellar advice? It's all the more frustrating because he was on a bottle for the 1st few days (I was drugged up on magnesium due to preeclampsia and unable to breastfeed) and we were having trouble with breastfeeding at the beginning. Any ideas you have would be great!

Hi there!
I've found this article (http://www.babycenter.com/refcap/473.html) helpful in introducing the bottle to my baby. I've also started putting on a white noise CD that my DD likes (w/ the sound of a rainstorm) and running the bottle nipple under hot water before feeding her; both of those things seem to help. My DD initially took the bottle well at 4 wks, then at 6 wks wanted nothing to do with it. We seem to have gotten back on track the past few days by using some of the tricks/advice I mentioned. HTH!

The one and only bottle DS will take the very few times he gets a bottle is the Playtex vent-air since it has a more breast-like shaped nipple. The flow of milk wasn't as fast either, which seemed to help. The regular bottle nipples would drowned him because they flowed so fast ~ more was coming out of his mouth than going in...

edsbabyrhi - Bottles Esther won't drink cold milk. Doesn't have to be warm, but at least room temp. She also likes the plain, old style nipples (the one that are rounded on one side and flat on the other). None of the fancy natural shaped ones for her. Her pacifier is the same shape, too. Hmm... oh I also do make DH give her the bottle and leave the room.

8 wks, 5 days
Audrey had her 2 month checkup on Friday, and received 4 vaccines. Poor girl. It was hard for me to watch - I had to look away or I would have burst into tears. I nursed her right afterwards and she was fine after that. She had a low grade fever all day, but managed to sleep it off (and tylenol helped, too). She's back to her old self today - cooing and smiling. :) She's now 12lbs 13oz and 23 inches. She's getting big!
QOTD - How much are you guys getting out of the house? I have felt like a shut-in for the past two months. But, I feel like I'm finally ready to start getting out and doing stuff with Audrey in tow. Hoping to get out of the house a few times this week. It just seems like it takes forever to get myself and her ready, that it's already 2pm by the time we're ready to leave. Sometimes I'd rather just stay home.

QOTD: I have to get out or I go crazy. I'm not saying I get out every day, because that is impossible. But, I've gotten into a parents orgainzation that organizes playgroups and hosts an open gym I've also started going to MOPS http://www.mops.org/ ((Mothers of Preschoolers)/) at my church. They help force me out, kwim? I find that if I can take a shower before DH leaves for work it's much easier for me to get out. It's hard to get everyone ready, but you'll get into a routine w/ more practice. I'm still working on my routine for getting Aaron, Nate & myself out, but we're getting there!

QOTD The first time I went out alone with DS, I swore I'd never be able to do it again because it was so much extra work! But it got much easier, and now I'm used to it. We've been averaging going out about three times during the week, either on errands, meeting a friend, or going to my sister's house. I'm lucky because my sister also just had her first baby (four days after me!) and we've met for lunch, walks, etc. I agree that it does usually take forever to get out the door!
On weekends we (DH, DS and I) have generally been doing one day home all day (cleaning, etc.) and one day out for several hours. I love being out as a little family!
Even since he was just a few days old, I've had no problem leaving DS with DH, my other sister, my mom, etc. while I run an errand or two on my own. That person gets to enjoy bonding time with the baby, I enjoy the time out without all the baby gear, and the baby doesn't have to be taken out of the house.
Having said all that, it's worth noting that we live in Southern California and winter weather has not been an issue for us.

QOTD:We try to head out a few times a week, just cause I feel like I need it for my sanity. And if we don't get anywhere, usually I walk the dogs by myself when DH gets home, just so I have a breath of fresh air.

Getting out of the house - We were told by other friends with children that you just have to force yourself to get out, no matter how much work it is. So that is pretty much what we have done, and it gets easier everytime. I get myself ready to go then feed Max and get him ready last. Luckily he seems to think that the car seat is for sleeping only. ;) I can't do all my errands in one day anymore, more like one errand a day, but it seems to be working. I do really need to get out and get a haircut though! Which leads me to:
Taking the bottle - We have tried to bottle feed Max once so far and he wanted no part of it! I tried all the tips on babycenter.com and it just wouldn't work. We are hoping to try again in the next few days, and I may see about trying different bottles/nipples. I have really long hair, so between getting it highlighted and cut, it could take up to 3 hours away from the baby.....so I would really like to get this bottle thing down!

QOTD - Getting Out Not as much as I'd like, maybe a couple times a week. I have lots of excuses, though. DH's truck is old and unreliable, plus it gets poor fuel milage. So most days he take my car to work. That leaves me stuck. But even if I had a car, I don't know where I'd go. One can only walk around the mall so many times. I never bothered to find a mothers group because I have to go back to work soon. Plus the weather's been crap so outside things aren't fun. I do put DD in the sling under my coat and at least take a short walk most days, so I do get fresh air, but like I said it's been cold so it's not enjoyable.
One thing that does help me a ton, whether or not I am leaving the house, is to take my showers at night. I give DD to DH and go relax. I miss that fresh out of the shower feeling in the morning, but at least I can get up and moving at a decent time. Before I started doing this, many days I was still in my pj's at noon.

QOTD I stayed in for a little while longer bc Raymond was a preemie and I am so afraid of him getting that RSV virus. We finally left our bedroom after two weeks and went to other parts of the house. After about 8 weeks, we left the house and went to the mall (only on weekdays when it's not as busy). Now, we go almost everywhere so long as it's not too cold (we're in the North East). I am grateful this winter has been fairly mild. Raymond seems to have a cold today though so i think we are going to stay in our warm cozy bedroom all day today :D

Getting out of the house: I go out alone with DS any time I need. We've got a routine now and it doesn't take all that long to get it together & out the door (feed him, shower for me, bath for him, get him dressed, get myself dressed & ready). Of course, I don't go out all that often since I don't generally have anywhere to go (good thing I'm a homebody).
On the weekends we generally go a little more, at least out to lunch somewhere. We've been taking DS out since he was just a few days old (first trip out was the day after getting home from the hospital & let's just say he did better than I did).

I know I neglected to mention that Ben was born with heart disease, it's called tritology of fallot and it's going to require that he have open heart surgery when he's between 3 and 6 months old. We go to the pediatric cardiologist on the 28th and should have more information on the surgery and other things at that time. He's very healthy otherwise and right now his heart is just fine.
We haven't gotten out of the house alone yet but I'm just over 2 weeks post partum so I'm sure sooner or later we will have to tackle that. I have a daughter that will be 3 next month so I'm sure it will make things a little bit more tricky then when I had her.
ETA: I meant to add this picture in here as well. This was taken today, he's 2 weeks old.

QOTD (a little late). We were making great strides - getting out a little each day, then last week, I had to have an emergency gallbladder removal, so I'm back to sqaure one. I am taking Micki out today to attend a BF'ing support group. It's hard, b/c I have to descend/ascend two flights of stairs to go anywhere and come back - difficult with two ab surgeries in a month, carrying a baby in a carrier and a diaper bag! I'm getting back to speed, though.
Micki seems to be hitting her 6-week-fussies now. I keep telling myself it'll be over shortly. Poor thing is just so grouchy and won't sleep well. She's been in her Baby Papasan swing for over and hour and I'm dreading taking her out and putting her in her infant seat (whch she hates) for the car trip to the BF'ing group.

I am back at work after a month at home with my little girls. This is so no very exciting to me. It is nice to be out of the house, but for 8 straight hours...it's almost a sin! But, I have no choice as of right now. I have a full-time student husband and 2 babies that need my marvelous insurance.
On a happy note...let's talk about the babies. They are far too much fun.
Birth Story
On February 14, I worked my normal shift, taking a quick break to eat a special dinner DH had prepared. I felt great, just itchy because of the PUPPS. I got home around 11 pm, changed into my PJs and sat on the couch to watch the Olympics. Around midnight, I took the steroid I had been given to alleviate the itching. Not even an hour later, I started to feel pukey. I thought at the time, it was because I didn't take the medicine with food...so; I went to lay down by DH to see if it would feel better. Nope...after the pukey feeling, came diarrhea...and then, a feeling as if someone was sitting on my stomach. This was about 3 am. That is when I realized, I had never felt that uncomfortable, so I woke DH up and told him that I thought it was "IT". We got my bag and headed to the hospital...that is literally 3 minutes away from our house. We got to the hospital and they put me in the "check-in room". They took my vitals and info and then, realized how high my blood pressure was -- 192/103. I was having contractions and even though I was at 37 weeks, they could still stop my labor, but because of the blood pressure issue, they told us they'd be admitting me and if there was no success in lowering it, I'd be having a C-Section at 7 am.
They finally moved me to a permanent room, which was huge and very private. Because the hospital is so small, I had a nurse just for myself. Anyway, we waited until 7:30 am for Dr. Judd to stop by. He came in and checked me...it was the most painful experience I had had until that point. He just put his entire hand in me and declared that I was not dilated nor effaced. The blood pressure had gone down thanks to a drip of Magnesium that had put me on earlier that morning. So, Dr. Judd called in for the epidural and then, he'd come back to break my water and put in the Pitocin.
The Anesthesiologist came in and I realized how fearful I was of it. DH stood in front of me and he started. When I thought the worse was about to come, he told me that he was done. From then on, I felt no more pain. Dr. Judd came back in and broke my water. Dr. Judd put a very slow drip of Pitocin on, so he could go to the office and be back around 5 pm. The entire day, I just lay in bed and chatted with DH. He was so excited/nervous. So nervous, that he drove home to pick up some things I had forgotten and ended up hemming some pants while at home. He doesn't even know how to hem pants, but he did it anyway. Hilarious. It ended up being a very pleasant day. We spent lots of time on the phone letting people know I was at the hospital. It was a wonderful feeling.
Around 4pm, I started feeling pain/pressure. The nurse told me that the pressure was normal...and since I didn't know the difference between the two, I put up with it. 5pm came around and Dr. Judd was back at the hospital. Since I was having twins, they wheeled me to the OR. The moment I got in there and seeing all the commotion and knowing that I'd be delivering in a few minutes, I panicked. The panic manifested itself as vomit. What a sight I was! When Dr. Judd went to check me and I jumped, we realized that the epidural had worn out. So we sat there for 30 minutes waiting for the anesthesiologist who was busy administering to another woman. When the epidural was finally put in place, the many nurses in the room, grabbed a hold of my legs and it was time to push. My goodness...that was a lot of work and pain. After a few minutes, Baby A, who later because Nina, came out. She was 5 lbs 9 oz and covered with hair. She looked like a little monkey. I hardly saw her. Dr. Judd's plan was to breech the second baby and then pull her out in order to be easier on me, but the baby slid into position and he said it was too perfect to be true. So, I pushed again and 2 minutes later, Baby B (Ella) was out. She was 5 lbs 13 oz and also covered with hair. My husband was in tears and just kept answering my question saying they were perfect. He cut both of the umbilical cords. I hardly saw the babies...as I said...there was a commotion in the room with so many people in there. They wheeled me back to the room and I think that part where they take me to the bathroom to get me cleaned and "padded" was the hardest one. I almost fainted. Who knew! I thought that after the pushing, you were done...and fine.
The babies were taken to the Nursery soon after the delivery. The nurse came in to tell me that one of them had low blood sugar and asked if it was okay to give her a bottle. I was so exhausted that I said yes. So, they did it. I took a sleeping pill and was out for the rest of the night. I didn't meet the girls until the next day. DH on the other hand, stayed with them at the nursery until 2 am. He watched and filmed them hanging out in the warmer and taking their first bath. Thank goodness for that video otherwise I would have missed that moment. The girls were the smallest in the hospital, but by far the healthiest. No complications whatsoever. I loved it. There were bigger kids in the NICU.
At 6am the next morning, I woke up to DH sitting on the couch in my room watching me sleep. He said he could not stay home and sleep, so he got up and made his way back to the hospital. I told him I was going to try to sleep a bit more, so he decided to go home. At around 8am, I woke up for good with the nurse bringing me my breakfast. She asked me if I was ready to have her bring the babies and I told her that I wasn't. I wanted to get ready before they came so I could look pretty for them. I know, I know...so silly. She gave me a puzzled look and left. That is when I realized what I had just said...duh! I felt dumb. My kids would not care that I looked terrible. They probably just wanted to be held. So, I called the nurse and told her I was ready for the babies. Not even 5 minutes later, she entered the room with the most beautiful little girls. I called DH as I held them and he rushed back to the hospital. Once he got there, that is when we decided who would be Ella and who would be Nina. We chose Baby A to be Nina and Baby B to be Ella. They just looked like one was Ella and the other Nina. The interesting thing is that all along we talked about baby on the right being Ella. She was Baby A up until delivery...then she became Baby B...so, it ended up working out!
The coming home part was tough. I hugged all the nurses on my way out. I cried all the way home. My Dr. said I lost 90% of my hormones on those first few days. I was just so scared of everything. I thought I was prepared to be a mom, but turns out, I wasn't. I was so terrified of those babies...they were all mine and I was afraid I could do something to harm them. Luckily, we got home and 2 hours later, my MIL walked in. She is wonderful and stayed the first 2 weeks. She helped me gain confidence and do many things on my own.
Recovery
It was interesting to me that everyone kept telling me how having a vaginal delivery was much better for recovery reasons, but I didn't see that at all. I was in so much pain many days after...to the point that I thought maybe I was not taking care of the episiotomy as well as I should. One night, my friends and family were all visiting when I started having a high fever and chills. I was given some Motrin 800mg and it took care of the fever for 2 hours and then it was back again.
I began to suspect an infection. But, since the Dr.'s office was closed, I didn't call them until the next day. They advised me to go to the Emergency Room because they'd be better equipped. So, there I was...a week later going back to the very hospital I delivered. We get there and I get examined by the ER Doctor. Once I lay down and he put the speculum in me, he realized what it was. A 3''X3'' sponge was left inside of me. Having it taken out was just like delivering a baby all over again. Probably worse... I had to go back every 8 hours for a period of 24 hours to get IV antibiotics.

Esther had her 2 month WBV yesterday. Here are her stats:
Esther (elladee)
Weight
Birth - 7 lbs 8 oz
2 months - 12 lbs 2 oz
Height
Birth - 20"
2 months - 22 3/4"
She's average for height and in the 80th percentile for weight, my little chunky monkey. She has mild cradle cap. The doctor said we could just let it run its course if we want since it's not bad. She has so much hair that I really don't want to mess with oil and brushing. She also got her shots, poor thing. Her eyes bugged out of her head when she got stuck and then boy oh boy did she scream. But I had her calmed down about 5 minutes later and she slept in the car on the way home. I don't think we've scarred her for life.

Well for those of you that know Jeremiah and I have had realy trying times with BF'ing. I took him in for a weight check today and it wasn't good :( He had only gained 5 oz in the last three weeks. Granted he had taken a huge poop right before the appt., but still. Anyway, the ped. isn't sure if it's a supply issue on my part or the reflux he's been suffering from. So we are going to treat the reflux and see what happens. Also I've been having sore nipples which the Ped. thinks is yeast so we both have to be treated for that :( Man oh man I hope this gets better soon!

KRL626 - I really hope you can figure the problems out soon. Maybe you can go to a LC and weigh him before you feed him and then weigh him after you feed him and get a better handle on things. I think if it's a supply issue you'll be able to find out by weighing before and after a feeding. Don't forget to eat lots of yogurt since you have the yeast infection, that should help clear it up.

You can buy a fairly cheap baby scale at Babies R Us for like $30 and it goes up to toddler size (they stand on it to get weighed after a certain point). At ours, it is back behind all the bottle stuff with the sleeping aids. We bought one cause I was having supply issues and it is nice to be able to weigh them whenever you want.

Updated to here! :)
Taurus
03-21-2006, 06:52 PM
We had the 2-month WBV today. Here is our update:
T (Taurus)
Weight:
Birth - 6 lbs 10 oz
2 months - 12 lbs 4 oz
Height:
Birth- 19 in
2 months- 21.5 in
The doctor said he is in the 55th percentile for weight and 5-10 percentile for height.
The rest of the update is similar to yours, elladee (our babies are one day apart!): He screamed but was able to be calmed right away after his three shots, and he has mild cradle cap (although we did get a Rx for an ointment to help with the slight dry rash that the cradle cap caused him to get on his cheeks and shoulders/chest area).
The only other thing was this: When the ped put him on his tummy, she felt that he wasn't demonstrating that he is on track to be able to lift his head as much as he should by three months. She referred us to a physical therapist and said he should be on his tummy every waking minute. I have definitely been slacking with tummy time lately, but I also think that he was just being shy/lazy with her and that he generally lifts his head more than he was showing. I'm all for seeing a PT to learn some exercises I can do with him, but I'm not going to stress myself out over this too much. The ped is the same one I had when I was kid/preteen. I generally like her and love the treatment we get at the office, but I also think she goes overboard sometimes. It's hard to know how concerned I really need to be about this, she said she was being precautionary.

Alex has GERD. We went to the dr today - not our regularly scheduled WBV - because he was screaming and had projectile vomit the last few days. Normally, he's an extremely happy little man. The dr prescribed baby Zantac for Alex. Poor kid! I felt so bad! She described his stomach as a can of Coke - don't shake it up!! So, no bouncing or any up-and-down movements unless it's deep knee bends. He pretty much has to remain as vertical as possible at all times. She suspects he also has esophagitis!
The last time his weight was checked he weighed 9lbs, 4oz (think it was on 2/24). Today, he weighed 9lbs, 2oz :( So in 3-4 weeks, he's not gained an ounce. Not too troubling since he's doing everything he's supposed to be developmentally - tracking, smiling, laughing, holding his head & chest up, etc. I just feel bad for my long, lean little dude!
We have our next WBV on Monday so he'll get his weight checked then.

Brendan went in for his 2 month WBV the other day. His new stats are as follows:
Weight: 10 lbs. 13 oz.
Height: 22 3/4 in.
Taurus-Wow...our ped didn't even check Brendan's motor skills. I too have been slacking on tummy time and am starting to get worried because he barely lifts his head at all. I think you have a right mind not to worry much though.
Nikki-Omgosh yay!! Such a huge accomplishment. I'm jealous! :p
GERD must be so hard to deal with. At times, Brendan is so fussy during feedings (arching his back, crying, lots of spit up, etc.) no projectile vomiting though. I thought he may have had this problem but he's also not the best burper in the land..so I've chalked it up to gas. Just dealing with these feedings makes me want to pull my hair out...kudos to you ladies!

Those are all symptoms of GERD, with or without good burping. As long as he's gaining weight you could probably just give him children's mylanta to help him.

Hi there, Cathy! See, we ended up in a thread together afterall. :)
Nathan had his one month (at 6 weeks) check up today. We're going to be two weeks off for them all, I guess. His new stats:
Weight: 10lbs 15oz.
Length: 22 1/4"
I had to bring him to a lab for blood tests because all of a sudden the doctor thinks he's jaundice. To be fare, we see two different doctors, depending on the day. This doctor (Dr. Dave) hasn't seen him out of the hospital yet (he saw him at the hospital for discharge). Dr. Sam hadn't noticed anything at his other appointments. Anyway, they had to draw 4 vials of blood for a few different tests. He said that it's probably nothing - might be from my BM and that I shouldn't worry. I'm really not that worried, but I hated holding him down while they took blood! I didn't cry or anything - I've been through it all with Aaron and didn't cry for him either. But, man that was a long blood test!

Hi there. I have been MIA for a while, but am happy to be back and check out the new thread.
Rhys is doing great and is such a laid back happy little guy. Smiles and coos all the time :D I feel very blessed, because things have been rough for me the past couple months - and I can't imagine how I would have managed if he was a challenging baby. I was diagnosed with PPD manifesting as anxiety in the beginning of February. I am also having some strange neurological symptoms that the doctors can't quite figure out yet - despite a couple MRI's and repeated doctor's visits. The symptoms seem to be getting a little better, so I am very hopeful that it has run its course.
I am still bf'ing, but think I am going to start to wean soon. I go back to work on 4/13, and know that between my hour commute each way, busy work schedule and caring for a toddler I am probably asking too much of my body if I keep nursing/pumping. Plus, I might need to go on some meds that I can't take while bf'ing.

After an extremely rough start, breastfeeding is now going quite well. If it were up to Jack he would nurse 24/7. We can't manage that, but I do try to let him nurse for 25 minutes or so. He only gives a token protest if I take him off, so I know he's really done eating. I pump every morning so dh can do the first over night feeding. The longest strech get regularly get at night is about 3.5 hours, during the day I'm lucky if he goes 2 hours between feeds, usually it's more like 1.5 hours.
Sleep is a bit of concern for me. Jack was super sleepy at the beginning, but he has definitely woken up now. He really only sleeps in the swing or with us in bed. I swore I'd never co-sleep, but he sleeps so much better with us. As it is he doesn't fall asleep until 1 am. At that time, it's beyond me to get up repeatedly to keep him in the bassinet. Sometimes he falls deep enough asleep at his last feeding that I can put him in the bassinet, but usually he wakes up in the bassinet or while I'm transfering him. Once he's awake he won't stay in the bassinet.

Add another baby to the reflux group. I think Audrey might have reflux. Perhaps not as bad as some other babies in this group though. She's been vomitting several times (not projectile though) after feedings and coughs (likes she's choking) often. She's also been very cranky after feedings, and bobs her head on and off the bb during feedings. I called the pediatrician today and made an appt for Monday morning. In the meantime, they told me to begin giving her 1/4 tsp of mylanta after feedings.
------------------------------
yoganut - So glad to hear Rhys is being a good baby! I know the beginning was hard with the colic. Also glad to hear you are doing better as well. :) I hope the symptoms go away soon.
sophonisba9 - Glad BFing is going well! Audrey is the same way about sleeping - she'll only sleep with us or in her swing. We've tried to move her into the bassinet a few times when she falls asleep, but it's like she knows what we're trying to do - she wakes up as soon as we try to transfer her. She sleeps great with us (5-7 hour stretches!), so I'm being very lazy about transitioning her to the bassinet/crib. I need to be more diligent about it b/c the co-sleeping is putting a major strain on our sex life. :o

jules - sorry to hear that Audrey has reflux! Alex was on maalox for a day but it didn't help him. Hope it works for her and she starts feeling better!
sophonisba9 - glad that bf-ing is going well for you! Alex would nurse 24-7 if it was up to him too!!! What a boy! ;)
lynn - sorry to hear about the new possible jaundice diagnosis. I hated the heel pricks that Alex had when they checked him for jaundice. Poor kid! It made his heel look so sore!
I had to take Alex to the dr again yesterday. He had blood in his diaper. It wasn't anything serious though (I brought the diaper with me to show his dr). It was something called "brick dust" and has something to do with the hollowing out of his kidneys. Spoke with a former obstetrics / nursery room nurse (or my nurse mother did) and she said that it usually only happens right away while the baby is a new newborn. It seems Alex likes to do things his own way. So I had a scare for another day. Fortunately, our ped is awesome so he patted me on the back and said he's ok but call if it gets worse.
What a rough week!!!!!
Well, Mr. I Have To Eat Every Two Hours is getting fussy (it's been 2 hours) so I better latch him on.... what a boy!!! :)

Terry's wifey- I'm pretty sure everything I've read says catagorically to not give infants water. At this age they don't need straight water for hydration, they get all the fluids they need from breastmilk or formula. i think read that straight water will fill them up with out giving them the nutrition they need and might also mess up their digestive systems for a bit since they aren't used to it and their systems are designed to take it at this age. Is there a reason why you think Ashley needs more fluids? I live in the desert and try to drink about 90 ozs of water a day, myself, but I can tell Jack is well hydrated by his diaper out put and all he gets is breastmilk. You're pumping right? Isn't it cool that you can see that the first bit of milk is more watery and the latter milk is thicker and fattier? Of course I'm also endlessly amused by the ring of milk fat that rises to the top of the bottle and congeals on the sides while it's in the fridge.:D
Jules- you are so lucky to be getting 5-7 stretches. Jack took a five hour nap yesterday, but that was a total fluke and I think he was making up for completely napping like crap the previous 3 days. I was so worried there was something wrong with him that he was sleeping for so long that I finally woke him, that and my boobs were getting REALLY full. Usually the longest he goes during the day is an hour and half, maybe two hours.
Aligirl- I guess some boys are just programmed to grow up into boob men.:p

I have some more info on this. (I think I had not fully understood and had over-simplified what the doctor told us.) I talked to my cousin who is an occupational therapist and showed her the notes the doctor gave us. The doctor is wanting an evaluation with a physical therapist/occupational therapist to rule out torticollis. I researched it a tiny bit, and torticollis is when babies have a muscle condition that leads to tilting their heads to one side, and it has become more common now that babies sleep on their backs. (And it can lead to the whole flat-head thing.) When babies have it, they don't like tummy time. As I mentioned, T wasn't having any of the tummy at the doctor's office. And when she lifted him, she thought his neck tilted to one side. But of course, both his unimpressive tummy time and the "tilt" are things that he just happened to do in the few seconds that she was checking on it! I don't see these problems at home. My cousin also agreed today that she saw no tilting at all. The little research I did said to just do lots of tummy time and see a PT (phys. therapist). We've been doing more tummy time, sometimes with a rolled up blanket or the Boppy underneath him to help. I'll be interested to see what a PT will say even though every mom I talk to, my cousin the OT, and my sister the child development specialist (who have all spent plenty of time with T) say it's crazy that the doc wants us to see a PT right now  .

Something that might help, my DH gives Morgan tummy time on his chest every morning, he loves the baby-daddy attention, and Morgan enjoys rubbing his face in Ed's chest hair. (Sears calls it "warm fuzzies"), he lifts his head much more for this tummy time than for the stuff on the mat or boppy that we do later in the day.
We need to go get a special test done at the hospital. Morgan had a single umbilical artery and we were followed very closely by a specialist throughout the whole pregnancy. Everything seems to be fine and he had an ultrasound at 3 days old to check his organs and everything looked good. But there is one more test our ped wants to do. they insert a catheter and fill his bladder up with dye until he pees to make sure his urinary tract is not doing this reflux thing. I am not looking forward to that.
We had our 2 month visit on Friday:
Birth:
Weight: 7 pounds 13 ounces
Length: 20 1/4 inches
2 months:
Weight: 11 pounds 9 ounces
Length: 23 inches
Can anyone give me a clearer definition between regular baby gas and reflux? He has some of the reflux symptoms a lot but I was chalking it to regular gas. Although, it seems to pretty much disappear with gas drops so I am probably being a paranoid mom...

My DD has thrush and when my DH talked to the advice nurse she had mentioned that we can now give her some water betweem her feedings (not sure how this came up in the coversation). I will be calling myself to see, there was no particular reason for giving it her no signs of dehydration or anything I guess it's always been something in my family, you're always being asked "Have you started the baby on water yet?"
This is what I got from American Baby website.....
Dr. Alan Greene on Newborns and Water
Is it okay for infants to drink water?
By Alan Greene, MD, FAAP
Question
I received an e-mail from Beechnut that says water is not good for newborns because their kidneys aren't developed enough to handle too much. But my 2-month-old has been drinking water since birth and loves it. Is that okay?
Answer
Some babies' kidneys do not do a good job getting rid of the extra water they drink without also getting rid of sodium, so they can end up salt depleted and can even get seizures from it (something we see occasionally). Also, when some babies drink water they don't get all of the formula or breast milk that they need and end up undernourished. Many babies would do fine drinking water, but it is wise to be cautious.
At 2 months, most babies do fine with 4 ounces of water a day. The more you go over that, the higher the risk of the problems we talked about. And babies are built so that they usually don't need extra water -- unless it is very hot. Usually, even then, extra formula or breast milk is a better choice

Maybe you can check out this site for a definition of Reflux in children: Gastroesophageal Reflux in Infants and Children (http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m3225/is_11_64/ai_80813356) and MARCI Kids GERD Info (http://www.marci-kids.com/whatisgerd.html)
Nick has GERD too and is on Zantac and has to have rice cereal in his formula. I also give him Cherry Mylanta Supreme from time to time. He does not have weight issues, but has many of the other symptoms including the spitting up, irritiblity, very gassy, screaming from discomfort, chronic wheezing and coughing, etc. He might have to switch to Prilosec, Nexium, Prevacid or Zegerid since a lot of his symptoms are starting to come back. I read that most kids quickly develop a tolorance to Zantac and have to have something a bit stronger.
A good site for infants/kids with GER/GERD is the Infant Reflux Message Board (http://www.infantreflux.org/forum/default.asp). Lots of helpful people there with kids that have various degrees of reflux.

GERD/Reflux - My DS#1 had it pretty bad up until about 4 months. DS#2 displayed symptoms of it early on, but they seemed to resolve by about 8 weeks (very lucky!) and at 12 weeks he is super happy with no more vomiting (just the normal baby spit up). We still keep him in his carseat to sleep at night, because it does seem to help.
One thing to keep in mind. DS#1 had chronic issues with ear infections for the first year. Our ped said that is very common with kids who have reflux, because some of the milk can end up going up into the nose/ear when they vomit. He was typically fussy because of the reflux, but when he would get an ear infection it was especially bad. Just thought I would share so that other mommys can watch for it.

Terry's wifey- what you posted is pretty much what I've read in the parenting books i've got. Isn't it funny how different families have different quirks and traditions. My mom keeps asking me if Jack has developed colic yet. I don't know why she thinks he's going to become colicy, he's the most laid back baby ever.
DTD- Only tried it once so far, used some lube and everything was just fine. A co-sleeping, wake up every 2 to 3 hours baby and a husband who works long hours don't really provide a lot of opportunities.

{{{hugs}}} Jocelyn has an enlarged pyloric muscle too. It has been right on the edge of diagnosis until the other day. We have surgery today actually (I cant sleep at all). If you need anything, pm me. It has been a rough road for us since she has very few signs (she is gaining weight not losing it) except for the profuse vomitting. Plus, she has no risk factors. Combined with the reflux they think she has, it has not been a happy household. Take care and keep us updated!!

Boy this thread goes much faster now that we've joined up! We had our first bout of sickness this past weekend. First DH was sick on Thursday, then Esther started on Friday, and I was a mess on Saturday. Luckily Esther never got too bad, but it's no fun taking care of a baby when you're under the weather. We're pretty much all better now, so life is good.
DTD We're 9 weeks pp and have only done it 3 times. Still hurts. To make things worse (and this is probably TMI), we never really came up with a good solution to birth control so we're using condoms. This makes things take much longer.
Hugs to all of you dealing with reflux issues. That sounds no fun at all. Does it eventually go away?
tray622, best wishes for the surgery today.

We took Alex to see his ped today because he projectile vomited his entire stomach (like 3-4 ozs) last night and this morning. We were sent to the hospital to get an ultrasound to check for a condition in his stomach/intestines which would've meant Alex would have surgery if present (pyloric stenosis). WE even had to go to the hospital that had good pediatric surgeons, just in case  The ultrasound showed a normal stomach (YAY!). :D Unfortunately, he has really bad reflux so feeding him takes forever since we have to burp him every few minutes to make sure he doesn't launch his meal across the room. :( Poor little guy!!! So far though he's doing better.

Our ped gave Audrey a Rx for Prevacid (for her reflux). We used it for the first time last night, and so far so good. She hasn't been vomitting between feedings, but still spits up a little. And, she didn't cry very much last night. I hope she continues to get better! I had bad reflux throughout my pregnancy (starting at 12 weeks!), so I know how painful it is.
Sorry I haven't been able to get to the updates! I'll try to make some time this week. :o
sophonisba9 - Love the pic of Jack in your avatar! He's a cutie! Audrey takes crappy naps during the day, so I think that's why she sleeps so well at night. I wish I could get her to take longer naps!
Taurus - I hope you don't end up having to do PT!
tray622 - I hope Jocelyn's surgery went ok and she's recovering well!
aligirl - Glad to hear it's nothing serious! Sorry you are dealing with such bad reflux.
DTD - sad to say, but we've only done it once. :o And, it was pretty painful. We don't get a lot of opportunities with a co-sleeping baby. Plus, I've had some recovery issues that still give me a lot of pain. DH has been VERY patient!

Quick Question...
For you ladies who had epidurals... does the spot where they put it in still feel different. It's not really painful, but it just feels different, like I can feel where it went it. (I know I'm not explaining this well at all!) I did have 3 epidurals before it actually worked... and I can feel each spot. It just don't know if it's normal or not.

The doctor tried for over 40 minutes to get my epidural in (and eventually had to put me totally under). I can sometimes still feel where they were poking around trying to get it in. Some days it's a little ache, some days it's a real pain (enough to need a heating pad...and I have a high pain threshold). It's been 3 months and I'm still feeling the discomfort from it.
I also have a friend whose baby just turned 1...she said she can still feel the spot sometimes too.

i really thought he'd be heavier since he was in the 95th percentile the first month, but now he's at the 75th. watching him get those shots was not fun. the ped also recommended vitamins, since i'm breastfeeding. anyone else get that advice??
i know these QOTD's are late, but anyhoo...
getting out
i was totally ok with taking our baby out after the first 2 weeks, to friends' houses, etc. much to the dismay of my mom...and that came back to bite me in the butt!! at 3 weeks, DS was admitted to the hospital with a fever and they did all kinds of tests on him, to rule out a bacterial infection (like meningitis). i don't mind toting him around and have gotten pretty used to lugging all the gear. tomorrow, we're going out to take some pics at the tidal basin with the in-laws. thankfully, the weather is warming up here (DC metro area).
introducing bottle
last weekend, DH and I went to Myrtle beach for two nights and left DS with my mother. i left about 25 bottles of EBM. he usually protests the first bottle, but then i think he realizes that he has no choice and eventually takes his 3-4ozes. when i came back, there were no problems latching on to my bb.
DTD
we did it 2x since the birth, once at 6 weeks, once at 9 weeks...not much fun, but i think it's getting better. weird, considering i had a c-sec. but it still hurt, probably from bfing.
GERD
at 8 weeks, i thought we were going to have this problem, since DS was spitting up, coughing, etc. but after about 2 days, he was fine.

Wow! this thread is moving fast!
DTD Still haven't done it. :o I got cleared on Tuesday for it, but the opportunity hasn't really presented itself, between having DH's other two children staying with us, Michaela's sleep patterns and well, life. It'll happen, though. I'm hoping I can incorporate my first glass of wine in almost a year into the evening. ;)
Vitamins Yeah, we were prescribed Tri-Vi-Sol, which we have, but I'm bad about giving it every day. Oops.
Bottle We started to introduce two days before she turned one month. We're glad we did, because I had to spend two nights in the hospital right after she turned a month old. She got bottles for about 4-5 days straight and took them like a champ. Sometimes, though, during her evening fussies, I think she wants that fast flow, so we either give her EBM or formula in a bottle and that chills her out. I can tell she doesn't really like the formula. She usually won't take more than one ounce or so.
GERD Starting to wonder if Micki has this. She's been spitting up more and more and now, she occasionally projectiles. She also has bouts of extreme fussiness at the breast. Sometimes, I can chalk it up to gas, but not always. It breaks my heart when she *cries* at the breast. It's like she's in pain, poor baby. She also seems congested often and has coughing bouts a few times a day. I was going to wait until next week to talk to her ped about it (2 month WBV), but I might call her today just to ease my mind.
Smiling She *just* started to smile more consistently. She's been on the verge for a couple of weeks now, but Monday, she really started smiling when we have a little play time. She'll even smile to her reflection in the Gymini mirror - cute.
Hair She's got it - not a ton, but enough for people to remark on it. It's fairly curly, too, which I love! It's especially curly when it's wet. I took this one right after a bath

ginadc - Welcome! Congrats on your new addition! Love her name!
froggie - DD's smiles were still elusive around 7 weeks. It wasn't until about 9 weeks that she started smiling consistently and responding to my/DH's smiles with smiles of her own every time. As for playing with Audrey, I just started to do that more now. I usually put her in her bouncer and dangle a toy in front of her and talk to her. She tries to grab for it (just starting to grab for things) and talks back to me. The main thing I do is talk to her, though. No real playing yet.
vitamins - I'm breastfeeding and my ped has never mentioned anything about vitamins. ??? What's the reason for them? I'm still taking prescription prenatal vitamins. Does that help?
QOTD - Anyone starting to lose their hair yet? My hair's been coming out a lot more when I brush it. I'm constantly picking hair strands off myself and Audrey. Not coming out in clumps, though. Thank goodness! Let's hope it never comes to that!

Funny about all our hairy babies. :D Esther has a lot, too. She's lost a bunch since she was born, but people do still comment on it. No where near as much as some of you, though.
vitamins, the ped in the hospital recomended them, but our ped didn't think we needed to bother. So I haven't.
smiling, around her 2 month wbv is when DD started giving smiles in response to us. Before that they were pretty random and few and far between.
playing, we put dd on her back and talk to/with her, too. She seem to have fun when I bicycle her legs. Sometimes, she likes to play by herself. I leave her on her back and she goes to town kicking and making noises.
Jules, that so neat that Audrey is grabbing at things! Esther's hand movements still seem pretty random.
hair loss, I am losing it, but worse than pre-preg.

Smiles I would say 8 weeks for the smiles too. they are so great!!
DTD Not that I'm glad others are having trouble, but I do feel better knowing that DTD is difficult for someone besides me!! Although that probably doesn't make DH feel much better!!
Playing We use the swing, bouncer, and gym, the boppy, a plain blanket on the floor. We talk a lot & she talks back which is too cute! I got some books & other little rattles & stuff out & she always has liked looking at & now reaching for her stuffed animals. We sing too. I'm a terrible singer, but she doesn't seem to mind! She enjoys little massages too.
Hair We're still waiting!

Hi everyone! Sorry I've been MIA, I've been reading along every day I just never have time to post. Sorry to hear about all the reflux issues. I didn't realize how common it was. Thankfully none of my babies have had that.
Yoganut so glad to hear that everything is going well with Rhys now. I hope you start feeling better soon too.
Love all the baby pics that your all posting. They are so adorable. I have to say that I'm also jealous of jjohm's babys hair! Jaxson doesn't have much unless you look really close.
Jaxson is doing great! For the past week now he has been sleeping all night and I finally got him to sleep in his bassinet instead of his bouncy seat. He's been so easy too, if he's awake and I'm ready for bed I just put him in there and turn on the vibrations and he goes to sleep on his own. His liitle nickname is smiley because he smiles ALL the time. I love it.
DTD we have only DTD three times and it's not because it hurts but because we have zero time or we are both exhausted. I don't know what's wrong with me or maybe it's from having four kids but the first time we DTD I was 5 weeks PP and it didn't hurt at all. :o
smiling Jaxson started smiling responsively around 7 or 8 weeks but really picked it up within the last two weeks. Like I mentioned above he smiles all the time, I guess he's a happy baby.
play right now we do a lot of the things everyone has mentioned. We "talk" to him when he's cooing and he just found his hands earlier this week so I will hold a toy bar in front of him and he bats at the toys and trys to grab them. He entertained himself for a half hour one night, just kept smiling at himself in the mirror, so cute!
vitamins I was never told to give vitamins, at least not this early, with any of my kids so I haven't.
hair loss I've always had an issue with hair loss, it's hereditary, so I haven't really noticed a lot yet. I know I've noticed it with my other pregnancies so I've been waiting for it this time but haven't noticed a significant amount.
I know I've missed a lot of you but I think I fell too far behind. I'll try to post more often but that will mean missing out on some sleep and you all know how important that is.
Keep posting pictures of those babies! I don't have any recent pics of Jaxson but I will post some when I do.

angelgirl, jules, jennapeach: your babies are adorable!!
has anyone entered their baby's pics in a contest yet?
smiling and play: ryan started smiling at around 8 weeks and then it became more frequent recently. he "talks" to us now, and when DH gets home from work, that's the first thing they do. DH swears he speaks "baby" and that ryan always tells him how his day went. he's just starting to play with his hands by putting them together and sometimes looking at them. it's cute to watch him accidentally bat at his toys and see the reaction. i think reaching will come in the next few days. here he is in his boat, before he even knew what was going on. i think he was more interested in chewing his mitten.

hair loss: when i was pregnant, i had absolutely no hair fall out... i'm beginning to see a few strands now and then. a few years ago, i had clumps of hair fall out (and actual round bald spots--i think caused by stress) so i'm not looking forward to seeing what will happen.

Question
What does an average day consist of for your baby?
Jack doesn't really seem to be interested in much yet. I talk to him while he's awake and after a 2 to 3 hour nap midmorning he eats about every hour and half and sleeps in between. I try to get out for a walk with him in the late afternoon and sometimes a visit with the neighbors. DH gets home after 7pm and he holds Jack and talks to him while I get dinner organized. Then we just hangout until bedtime. Jack alternates eating and sleeping in the evening, just like in the afternoon. He sleeps in the swing during the day and co-sleeps at night, because he won't sleep in the bassinet anymore.

qotd m doesn't really have a set pattern during the day yet. she's not a great napper. usually, she'll sleep/nibble most of the morning while we're on the sofa together. when she wakes up, she'll eat for a while, then we play on the gymini. then, i put her in her swing for a nap. we kind of repeat that sequence (wake, eat, play, nap) until dinnertime, when dh and i take turns soothing her while she fusses between feedings. dh gives her a warm bath around 7:30, swaddles her and hands her to me for feeding before she goes to sleep in her basinette. She usually sleeps there until 2-3am, when she and I transition to the sofa.
i try to take her out of the house a few times per week during the day, too.

QOTD:I was going to ask the same thing. We also do the wake, feed, play, nap schedule. Brendan is usually awake for about two hours at a time and naps anywhere from 1/2 hour to 2 hours during the day. I might be in the minority on this one but I put him down for "the night" around 11-midnight. That's when he sleeps his longest stretch which is about 5-6 hours.
Oftentimes I feel like I don't know what to do with him during wake times. Am I playing with him enough? Too much? Sometimes, he sits quietly in his bouncy seat when Mom needs a break. I feel guilty doing this but I think quiet time is important too? He usually stares at his hands or looks around during these times.
Also- DS is almost three months and doesn't really lift his head during tummy time like, at all. I've noticed he hasn't figured out how to use his arms to push up, so if his head does lift...it's because he's using his ab muscles. Should I be worried?

Sorry I haven't posted in a while. The boys tag team me all the time. They are the tail end of a nap now (both at the SAME TIME!), so I'll see what I can get in.
Very beautiful babies, Ladies! Aaron (my toddler) and I come on here every now and then to look at "babies". He loves all of the pictures, and so do I!
Vitamins: Won't give them to Nate even if the doctor says I should. He needs 15 minutes of sunshine, I think (not direct) to get the required vitamin D. And, my BM was made for him... why give him anything else?
DTD: Eh, I'm not too interested but managed to dtd twice. DH is nice and just waits for me to 'make the move'. I only do because I feel like I should at least try, you know? I know that after Aaron I did the same thing and my desire came back sooner than others. Not all others, but others.
Smiles: Very few and far between, but I believe the few I've gotten were real. I'm waiting for the next few weeks where they will be easier to get.
I don't usually post pictures anywhere but on my LJ, but I love this one of him smiling:

Our day- I haven't figured out a schedule yet. Balancing two is a bit difficult for me right now. Aaron's schedule is constant, pretty much. I'm just trying to fit Nate in to that one. I just figured out today that he needs to be in his crib for any sleep. No swing, no pkp... and swaddled. We use the miracle blanket at night, but the packaging says not to swaddle more than 10 hours in a 24 hour period. Um, he's swaddled for about 9 hours just at night!

QOTD: Typical day? What's that? ;) Things with us are pretty hectic because I'm a freelance writer working from home--if I don't work, I don't get paid, so I technically didn't do a "maternity leave" so to speak. So half the time Annika is napping while I'm wearing her in her sling and interviewing somebody on the phone!
She usually wakes up for the day around 6...argh, I wish I could push it back just a half hour or an hour to 6:30 or 7! When she's alert and playful we either play together with her on the playmat or I put on some music and we dance (I think she likes Paul Simon's "Graceland" album), or if I have a lot of work to get done I'll set her down on the playmat solo. She loves it and is constantly talking to that baby in the mirror on the one side. We have some chimes that she's now really into kicking and batting.
She eats about every 4 hours, give or take. Napping is a bit of a challenge; I have really only been able to get her to go down for a nap in her crib or bassinet once or twice. She mostly naps in her swing (slept there for a good solid hour and a half today!) or in her sling while I'm wearing her. But she's a decent sleeper at night. We put her down for the night around 9 pm and she sacks out pretty well until a bit after midnight (1 or 2), gets a feeding then, and then we try to stretch it out until 6 (while she tries to push it up until 5).

It's nice to read everyone's updates and relate, learn a few things, etc. I wish I could reply more personally to others' posts, but I have to try to log on just briefly--now more than ever I need to be really good about time management.
routine- It seems to change constantly. Lately the biggest changes I notice are that T can play or amuse himself for long stretches (on playmat or in Aquarium Bouncer) and that he is more engaged at hearing music, looking at things, "talking" to me, etc. Also, he can more frequently soothe himself or "put himself" to sleep if I put him somewhere for a nap while he's still awake. So these nice developments are changing our "routine" yet again.
For bedtime: For awhile, DH would go to sleep while I'd stay up to do a last feeding, put DS to bed around 10-11 and then go to bed myself, and DH would wake up for that first middle-of-the night-feeding and I'd get the next one. We realized that each of us getting an uninterrupted stretch of sleep that way each night was really helpful. However, in the last week we started noticing gradual changes in DS's patterns, and he has slept for 7 or 8 hours at a time, waking up just once to eat! So *for the moment anyway* our new thing is a final feeding around 8 pm, and then we alternate who gets up for the one middle-of-the night feeding. In case you're wondering: DS sleeps in his car seat, which is placed in his crib, and we are formula feeding.
reflux- The doctor thinks DS has a very mild case, which she says explains the fact that he's a horrible back sleeper and that he always sounds congested/makes throaty sounds. However, he does not spit up, vomit, or have feeding problems, so we've just had to accommodate by being creative with how he sleeps (hence the doctor-recommended car-seat sleeping). Don't even ask about the debate that was sparked in our house and among our circle of friends/family about stomach sleeping when babies prefer it...In any case, for now he sleeps in the car seat. While we went through a period of gassiness and some fussiness around 2-7 weeks, things are great now.
______
I had to stop in at the doctor's for an unrelated thing, and I again questioned the ped as to why she was referring us to a physical therapist. She said it's just that DS doesn't seem to turn his head as far to the left as he does to the right and that most parents wait until this is a noticeable problem and then the babies already have flat head. (Is it bad to insert the rolling eyes here???) She really didn't make herself clear the first time and made it seem like he wasn't on track to develop correctly or had a major head tilt. We're still annoyed with her about it but will follow through with the referral and are curious to see what a PT says.
Cute babies everyone!

I'll be back later (at least I'll try) with shout-outs, but I had to drop this pic off. Daniella was in her swing and DH covered her with a blanket. He wasn't paying attention to how he was laying it down, but we had to take a picture when the blanket ended up being positioned like this:

angelgirl You're babies have grown so much! Question: how do you get out and about in the city? I have a hard enough time maneuvering through NYC with one baby!
MrsTaz Oh my gosh that is such a funny picture!
Not much to report here. We have a weight check at the ped on 4/10. So hopefully the reflux meds. will have helped my boy to gain some weight. I'm not sure though. He still spits up a lot. :(

Schedule...Jack's on a pretty good schedule, for the most part. He eats about every 6 hours (8am, 2pm, 8pm, 2am) and is active a lot throughout the day. He generally takes a small nap in the morning (maybe 30-45 minutes), a good nap in the afternoon (1-2 hours), a smaller nap in the evenings (less than an hour), and then bedtime is around 9pm. While he's awake he loves his infant rocker and the animals that dangle. He has figured out if he kicks hard enough they move, so he gets pretty excited sometimes.
Smiles Jack smiles at DH and I a lot, but he seems to be pretty shy around other people. Within the last few days he's gotten better about smiling at his Mamaw, Papaw & his Uncle Bubba, but if we're out and someone else tries to get him to grin he gets a "what are you talking about?" look on his face.
Tummy-time & head lifting He's not too keen on the idea of laying on his tummy in the floor. If he's on top of someone he'll lay on his belly all day long. When he is on the floor he hardly lifts his head (and he doesn't push up with his arms). I'm not sure he's ever going to lift up or roll over (have you ever seen a walrus roll over?? :p )
Jack has discovered his fists and is constantly chewing on them. Most of the time I think he'd just as much like his hand as his binky. He is really starting to grasp things too. If we're not putting a rattle in his hand or letting him hold on to our fingers, then he's tugging on his own clothes. He's got quite a little grip. :)

KRL626...hi! the babies are getting really big...i'm very proud of them! getting around NYC isn't so easy...right now i've got the double snap 'n go, which is like driving a bus. we just bought a double jogger which is huge but easy to get around with. we spend a lot of time in the park and not so much time in stores...there's just no room in those tiny aisles for us!
our babies have the same birthday!!
schedule? what schedule? the babies are still nursing every 3 hours or so (sometimes 2ish!) and they do the same at night. sometimes they'll go 4 hours before they want to nurse again at night. but they're definitely "playing" more and looking at toys hanging above them and stuff. i love it!

Hi Everyone! Sorry I haven't posted in so long. I love reading along and especially enjoy looking at all the photos.
Noble is doing really well. He has been on 100% formula for a couple weeks now. I had been pumping since he was 1 week old until we switched him to formula. We tried Target formula and he didn't do so well so we tried the Enfamil Lipil - he did well on that but spit up some so I switched him to Enfamil GentleEase. I heard a lot of positive reviews on CC about GentleEase. He has been really fussy so I guess his tummy is getting used to it.
He went to his 2 month appt. and here are his stats:
Jasonsgal - Karen
DS - Noble
2 Month Appt.
14.4 pounds - 95% Percentile
24 1/4 " - 90% Percentile
He is SOO big, we can't believe it.
Schedule: He started sleeping thru the night (6.5 hours) on March 4th and has been sleeping thru the night on and off since then. Last Wednesday he slept 8 hours straight and did it again last night!!! He takes all of his day naps in his bouncy or cradle swing and we put him to bed in his crib at night and have been doing so since he was 2 weeks old. We put him down at 8:40pm last night and he woke up at 4:50am to eat. At 7am he wakes up (like clockwork) and he comes into bed with us for an hour to snuggle.
Smiling: Noble has been smiling for quite some time now. He laughs, coos and talks back to most anyone.
Since I haven't posted any photos of Noble here are some to catch you up on our little guy. His hair is so funny! It won't stay down, it sticks straight up most of the time. He has a lot of hair but it has thinned out since he was born.

jasonsgal - Sorry you lost your ovary during surgery. Thank goodness it will not affect your fertility too much! What a big boy you have there! Those pictures of Noble are freaking adorable!! Love the bath and happy hour pictures. Hehe!
Medako - What a cutie! Love the grumpy picture! Audrey is constantly chewing on her fists, too. She found her fingers a few times and sucked on those. She won't take a pacifier, so I think she'll be a thumb/finger sucker.
schedule - I had a pretty good schedule going before DST. Everything was thrown off this weekend. Audrey is BF and I'm following Weissbluth's advice on napping, so I make sure she's back down for a nap after no more than 2 hours of awake time. Sometimes she sleeps for 20 mins, sometimes she sleeps for 2 hours. We're still cosleeping, so I make sure she sleeps at least 12 hours at night (waking up 2-3 times to eat). In between naps, we play, go for walks or run errands. We plan on transitioning her to her crib when she's 4 months.
QOTD - Sensitive babies Anyone else have a sensitive baby? Audrey is super sensitive to loud noises/environments. We tried to take her out to a few places this weekend, and she freaked out - like wild screaming freaked out. She wouldn't even nurse, she was so upset. We have plans to go to an outdoor theater to see "The King & I" this Saturday with our friends (very family friendly place), but I'm afraid she's going to freak out again and we'll have to leave early. Is there a such thing as baby ear plugs? Or is that frowned upon?

QOTD - Jack is the opposite...nothing bothers him (which is great). When he was 4 days old we went to a HS wrestling match, complete with loud buzzers, people screaming, and lots of movement...he never flinched while he was asleep. If he's just semi-asleep some noises will startle him, but not enough to really wake him up or upset him ~ thank goodness!
My new concern ~ Jack hasn't had a poopy diaper since Friday afternoon. He's plenty gassy and doesn't seem to have a problem getting that out, but there just hasn't been a BM. He doesn't seem to be straining like he's constipated, so I don't know if I should worry or not. I've heard that it's not likely for exclusivly breast-fed babies to be constipated, but I wonder....but at the same time, when he did have his last BM it wasn't solid, if anything, it was a little more watery. *sigh* Does it sound like something normal or something to be a little concerned about?

jules - do you have a sling? When Aaron was tiny we took him to a Cubs game and he freaked everytime the crowd cheered. The next game I took him to (I was brave) I put him in a sling. He would still wake up during the cheers, but calmed down fast because he was all snuggled in close to me. Not sure if that would help in this situation... but it wouldn't hurt to try!
oops! A just woke up from his nap. I hope Nate stays sleeing a bit longer!

lynnh - That's a good idea! I do have a sling, but Audrey hates being in it unless she's really tired (light bulb moment!!). So, it might work in this situation. It's worth a try at least.
medako - Your mellow baby sounds heavenly!

medako - Your mellow baby sounds heavenly!
I hate to brag, but he is *LOL* I have no room to complain at all. As a matter of fact, I read through some of the stories here of mommies dealing with reflux, sleeplessness, excessive fussiness, etc. and I wonder how I got so lucky to have a baby who doesn't cry much, sleeps good, eats like a little piggy, doesn't spit up at all, and tolerates my trials and errors as I figure out how to be a good mommy. :)

Quick update on us...
We spent most of the day Thursday and Friday at the pediatricians office and the lab. Then Caleb was admitted to the hospital on Friday afternoon. We stayed there overnight on Friday and came home Saturday so he's not in critical condition but we still have to monitor him...
A couple weeks ago we discovered Caleb was losing weight (probably because he was spitting up at least half of what we fed him) and they suspected reflux, gave us some Zantac, and when we came back for a follow-up visit he seemed to be gaining weight normally again. Then I took him in to be weighed again last Thursday and he had lost weight again. :( So they started running all kinds of tests on him and decided to admit him to the hospital for even more testing and to keep him there with an IV until they knew for sure what the problem was. To our great relief they quickly ruled out the big things that would've required surgery. And in the end we're still stuck with a diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux (GER) - although now they know for sure he is refluxing (a lot) since they saw it on the screen when they did his upper GI.
He has now been referred to a specialist that we met with in the hospital. We've got two prescriptions for him and a list of other things to try that might help. It's hard to tell from day to day how he's doing - sometimes he has great feedings where he hardly spits up at all and other times he spits up buckets. Although since we've been home from the hospital he seems to be keeping most of his meals down. We went in this morning for another weight check and he's gained a little back again, but since he seems to go up and down in weight a lot I'm not quite breathing a sigh of relief just yet. We go back on Wednesday for another weight check. We really just hope & pray that he continues to keep enough food down to grow and gain weight like he's supposed to! Right now he weighs less than he did at his 1 month appointment. :(
Well, I'll have to come back later to answer some of the QOTD's I've missed because my little guy is waking up for his next feeding. Hope everyone is having a good day!

Mekado - Totally normal. I worried about it too, but the Ped told me that they can go as long as a week with no poop. It just means that he is using everythin ghe is eating. My girls are exclusively breastfed and they only poop 3 times a week...but, we have A LOT of wet diapers.

The reflux has been resolved!!!
Alex was weighed today and he gained 22ozs in a week (10lbs, 10ozs)!!! :D I'm so proud of him. He's been eating 1/2 breastmilk, 1/2 formula... on the path to 100% formula. I just can't bear the thought of pumping at work... We're so happy! The Zantac is working so I have my happy, smiley, flirty little man back!!!

My first day back at work was yesterday. It was ok leaving DS, but just a very long day. DH is watching him during the day while he looks for a "real" job. Up until DS was born, he had his own business, but he hasn't had much work, so I am the breadwinner...no pressure or anything!
Have been lurking along, but have no time to post. Isn't it sad that I have more time now that I'm back at work?!
DS is doing well. Answers to some previous QOTDs:
Schedule: DS seems to have mixed it up recently. He was sleeping around 4-5 hours, then waking up for a feeding, then sleeping until 6:00 or 7:00, then taking another nap. Now he seems to have added an additional feeding around 5:00 AM and only sleeps for another hour or so. This is not good now that I'm working. Before, I was pumping a bottle for DH to give at night, but exclusively breastfeeding. Since I'm pumping at work, I have to breastfeed during the night again. I'm tired after only two nights!
I think our schedule is changing due to the DST and the fact that I took him to my parents' house for a week...new location, new PNP, etc. He didn't sleep well at all and then improved after a couple of days.
Playtime: During the day (before I went back to work), we would play on the activity mat, hang out in the bouncy seat, I lay him on the couch and let him kick his little legs and talk and smile (he seems to love this). I sing a lot, not well, but DS doesn't mind...I've been making up silly little songs since he was a newborn. Now that the weather is nicer, I would try and get him out for a walk in the afternoons. He's good about running errands...will sleep in the car, but we haven't taken him out as much as I think other moms have.
Who knows what DH will do...I hope it's not watching ESPN all day. :)
Smiling: Like everyone else, preliminary smiles were around 6-8 weeks. Full-on grins and laughing were a couple of weeks later.
Finding Hands: I think he discovered his hands about 3 weeks ago. Like others have mentioned, he doesn't take a pacifier, so I'm sure I will have a thumbsucker. Sometimes, he wakes me up with these loud slobbery, sucking sounds as he's gumming his fist. It's pretty funny.
Sleeping Locations: He naps in the bouncy chair or the swing during the day. Sometimes the PNP. We've always had him sleep in the crib at night, which is in our room.
Tummy Time: I hate to admit that I've been slack about this. He lifts his head off of our chests and has a strong back. He loves to "stand" on your lap. My pediatrician didn't ask about it, but I'm not a huge fan of her anyway so take that with a grain of salt. He seems better about lifting his head, but still doesn't like TT at all.
Vitamins: We were also told to give Tri-Vo-Sol (sp?) because I'm breastfeeding. We gave it to him once and he was so gassy and literally screaming after the dose (he has never screamed like that ever) so we never gave it to him again.
Bottle: Introduced the bottle around 5-6 weeks. DH used to give one bottle at night. He won't take it from me. I pumped a little at my parents' house so my mom could feed him. One day he did great, but the next two times was a struggle. He doesn't seem to have any trouble with DH at all.
DTD: Only once, with a condom. Not horrible, but nothing great either. With our schedule, I doubt it will happen anytime soon! However, we didn't DTD too often before DH. I still wonder how he was conceived! :D
Sensitive Babies: I think DS is a little bit sensitive. We didn't take him out much when he was little, which I think was a mistake. We took him to an outside bar last Friday and he got fussy once the happy hour crowd showed up. However, he would nurse so I guess it didn't upset him too badly. At home he seems to sleep through most noises during the day, except when our dogs bark.
QOTD: I feel like such a slack mom. I haven't done anything with his baby book and haven't even done announcements. I just got some pictures developed and framed and have hardly sent any to friends/family. The days just always seemed to be sucked into this black hole. Anyone else feel like this?

Annika went for her 2-month peds appointment yesterday. The doctor pronounced her "perfect" (yay!). She is 10 pounds, 2 ounces (about 50th percentile) and 21 inches (only about 5th percentile, but the ped says he pays very little attention to those comparator charts at this point unless there are any other issues, which she doesn't have). Of course, then after we get all the happy news as to how well Annika is doing, I have to watch her get her shots. I had no idea I would cry but I was a mess--she turned tomato red and SCREAMED with each one, but then calmed down pretty quickly. Mommy, however, was a mess for much longer.
Here's her "I'm 2 months old" picture:

I love it, but it's kind of freaking me out because...doesn't she almost look like a little girl instead of a baby? I look at her face in that picture and I get the sense of her two- and three- and four-year-old face peeking out at me. It's wonderful and scary at the same time.

YIPEEEEEE! Annika slept through the night last night!!!! It was a real milestone night--first, she took her first bath without wailing. It may be just because she's getting a little older and getting used to it, but I also had the water a little warmer (at the top end of the little floating temperature gauge seal toy we have) and almost to the very top of the tub, so her baby hammock was much deeper in water. I think she was much happier b/c she was warmer. She actually seemed to enjoy it!
She had had a bottle at 7:45, and was up and alert for quite awhile after that, so we waited to give her her bath until about 10:30. Then we settled her down with her usual bedtime routine--the "Till Their Eyes Shine" lullaby CD, book, and bottle (of which she only took about an ounce-ish). She went down to sleep at 11--and didn't wake up for the day until 7!!!! DH and I awoke at around 5 to the sounds of her stirring a little, and he said, "What time did you feed her?" I said, "I didn't!" We waited for her to really wake up and make some noise, but she didn't and drifted back off until I got her up a little after 7. Wow, I hope this wasn't just a one-night fluke!

ginadc, Congratulations on STTN!!! I bet you felt wonderful this morning! Glad the bath went well, too. It's so much fun when they're having fun.

Our sleeping is getting better too. Jack's consistently sleeping 6-7 hours. I can wrap him up, lay him down, and most of the time he'll put himself to sleep. Thankfully I'm not up for hours trying to rock him to sleep or trying to lay him down without waking him up.
Jack's just about to outgrow his bassinet. :( My big boy is getting too long. I'm REALLY not wanting to move him to his crib. He's just growing up too fast and moving into the "big boy bed" is just another one of those milestones. :(

Hi girls sorry I haven't really posted baby stuff lately. My daughter has been keeping me busy, lol 4 yr. olds go figure. So I don't have much computer time. Anyway, it is so nice to see how everyone little ones are just growing.
Caedan is sleeping really well too. For the last week or so, He goes down at night around 11:00 and will wake up about 5:00am, nurse, and go back to sleep until about 9:00am. Then he is up for the day. He'll have a nap here and there. But he seems to like to be up during the day. He already seems as if he's afraid he'll miss something.
Not sure on his length at the moment, but we weighed him yesterday and he's at 10lbs. Dh's coworker saw him the other day and said "he sure looks healthy" I guess it was because of Caedan's NICU stay everyone expects to see a sickly little boy. But that is far from what they see.
He laughed for the first time on Monday. I LOVE those little breath sounding laughs! He has one of those play may/bym things and a chair with the arch of toys. He loves them and has started to smile and laugh at the toys when they love or make noise. I don't think he has realized that he is making them do that when he hits them,. But it's still fun to watch him try to figure it out.
Well, my daughter is up and running around. I'll try to post more often.

8 wks as of Today
STTN: JR slept through the night for two days now. I am so happy. Even a week ago, he only slept for 3-4 hours at night. Then suddenly, he slept for 6 hours on Sat, another 6 hours on Mon, then boom, 8 hours on Tue and Wed nights. I am still not used to this, so I keep waking up at 4, 5am to check on him just to make sure he is alrigh. Medako, I don't know if it's coincidence or not, but JR started sleeping longer from the very first day that we moved him to his crip in his own room. (He slept in PNP in our room before) It is sad to put your baby in the other room. STTN is a good morivation to put him in the crib.
Laughing: JR just started smiling in response to mine. So I am sure we have to waif a while for him to laugh.

ginadc LOL, DH and I had the exact "When did you feed him?..."I didn't!" exchange the first couple of times T slept through the night. We have literally high-fived each other in lying in bed at 5:30 am!
We generally put him down for the night between 9-10 pm, and--for almost two weeks now--he has slept at worst until 5:00 am and at best until 7:30 am.
elladee Isn't it great when you realize they can soothe themselves to sleep? T is better at this with naps than he is at bedtime (when he ususally falls asleep at the end of the feeding), but it's a really nice development.
QOTD/laughing T hasn't really done it yet. Once I was holding him and he was alseep and I swear he laughed in his sleep (it was really funny and a bit spooky!) but he hasn't done that while awake. Still just smiling--I swear he spends half the day with a smile on his face, it is so cute.

DH was singing We Are the Champions and Owyn was laughing so much (I had never heard him laugh this much before). Jules, Esther's not laughing yet either. She's about exactly the same as Audrey - smiles, cooing, squealing, but no laughing. She's done a silent laugh thing a couple times, but I don't think that counts. I'm sure Audrey's fine. But it sure would be fun to have them laughing.

STTN this is driving me batty. J was doing this about a month ago usually 5-6 hour stretches and sometimes 7 or 8. But we have majorly back tracked and I too am lucky if he goes four hours without waking. It would be easier if we weren't living in a one bedroom apartment and had him right next to us the the bassinet. Every time he even slightly fusses it wakes me up! I am so hoping this resolves itself soon as I start back to work on Monday. :(

Do any of you guys use pacifiers? My daughter hated them, but when Caedan was in NICU they were using them. And now he always wants one. DH wants me to try to wean him off it if I can. Just not sure if I want to tackle that yet LOL
Laughing Don't feel bad if your baby isn't doing exactly what people say they should be doing. Caedan will laugh and smile, but they are only a couple times a day. Just remember everyone's baby is different and will do things at their pace ;)
QOTD Anyone else have older siblings who are acting out now that they know the baby is here to stay? My daughter is 4 yrs. and has been terrible the past week or so. She is so mean to Caedan. She takes his bink away from him (pacifier), she stopped the swing yesterday by grabbing his head!!, she screams at him when he is asleep - just to wake him up, it is so exauhsting. We just took T to the physical therapist. He does have slight torticollis--in his case a preference for looking right that is caused by (I think I'm explaining this right) a tightening in a neck muscle. She said we should only need 4-8 physical therapy sessions and we need to do exercises daily. I don't mean to say anything controversial here or imply in any way that I'm not willing to do whatever I need to do for my baby, but DH and I just can't help feeling frustrated by all the conflicting advice: We follow SIDS recommendations of no stomach sleeping, our doctor recommends he sleep in his car seat b/c of his reflux, then the PT says that's really not a good idea for his neck. Then the PT goes and recommends back sleeping with the types of sleep positioners that aren't recommended by the Academy of Pediatrics. She also said he needs to be on his tummy a lot...and that we shouldn't use any of the prop-'em-up-type items that are sold in stores (Boppy tummy pillow, etc.) as they promote bad positioning. (She said to make a little pillow out of rice stuffed into a women's knee-high sock and sometimes use this to prop T up for tummy time.) Agh! Just a mini-vent.
I'm glad we're not high-anxiety people and are able to just roll with it while making the best decisions we can while considering and balancing all the info we're given. DH and I are the type to shrug and laugh...while we make a "rice sock" for our baby!
On the positive side, she did say that she was going to brag to the other PT in the office about getting to work with the sweetest, easiest baby ever brought into the office. Maybe she was flattering us, but we have been told things like this from others. He's such a good boy--and so patient while his parents try to navigate the (often muddy) waters of parenthood!

laughing: Ian's been laughing more and more, and smiling all the time (that is, when he's not in a cranky mood!)
I actually got some footage of when he first started laughing. I think the sound his laugh made actually frightened him, and he ended up bursting into tears! Here he is: link (http://www.dropshots.com/day.php?userid=87228&cdate=20060319&ctime=170829)
pacifiers: Depends on his mood. Sometimes he just NEEDS something to suck on, usually in the evening for some reason. Normally he doesn't need the paci in order to fall asleep though--swaddling, along with the nature sounds machine, seems to help best with soothing him to sleep.
Teething, anyone? I think we are embarking into that dreaded territory already! This past week we have gone from a peaceful baby who was STTN, to one that's inconsolable and crying nonstop. Last night I gave him a smidgen of Tylenol drops on the advice of our ped, and we actually got some sleep. I can't believe this might be starting already, he only just turned 3 months old!

Ugh, I have been horrible at coming to CC lately. Sorry!
Nathan has gotten away from his mellow self these past few days and constantly needs to be held. And I can't hold him the way I want to, it has to be over my left shoulder. I'm thinking belly ache? So, I rarely see his face even though I know he can smile.
Laughs? I don't think we're close. He's just started making squeaky noises every once in a while.
STTN? Um, I would say so. I put him in his crib somewhere between 8:00 & 10:00 (he likes to fall asleep while being rocked now and I have to keep him there for a bit or he'll wake up quickly). He'll wake up around 5:00 when I'll go nurse him and we'll both sleep on the recliner until Aaron wakes up around 6-6:30. He's always been a great sleeper, but I'm sure that will all change.
Pacifiers: Yeah, Nate likes them at times. He will take them more for Bruce than he will with me. I guess he sees me as the human pacifier. So did his brother!
Twyla's QOTD: Well, I'm surprised Aaron (2) isn't more jealous of Nathan. He's still giving him lots of hugs and kisses even though Nate's the one causing him to have very little (if any) play time with me. Today I felt like I couldn't do anything with Aaron. Slings are good for Nathan, but not all the time - today was one of those times.

Our sling has been a lifesaver, too. Most days it's the only place I can get Esther to nap. Though, that might be partly my fault, I may have created a sling junkie in the early days. Oh well. We're still doing the cradle position, though I think she might out grow that soon.
Getting her in is pretty awkward. I have a peanut shell, so these are the instructions (http://www.goo-ga.com/ps-cradle) I followed to get her in it. Though when I'm finished, her head isn't sticking out like in the last picture there. Basically I get her sitting in it sideways with her legs scrunched up and her bum at the seam and then lower her head down into it. After I get her in I usually have to twist and tug at the sling (and my shirt) to get things comfortable.
Twyla
04-08-2006, 10:22 AM
It sepends on the type of sling. I have a pouch sling. And they have instructions on their site for different positions. www.lucky-baby.com I hop you girls can find a comfortable position, the sling is the best baby item I own. I worried about Caedan being scrunched up, you may want to try putting baby in with their legs sort of pulled up like in the fetal position. I will say the kangaroo position is WAY easier then the cradle carry, all you do is cross their legs indian style and sit them in facing out. you can leave their hands in the pouch or out. Caedan likes it because he can see everything and he likes to play with his fingers. Only draw back is he hasn't mastered holding his head up so every so often I have to support his head with my hand.
Oh I have to adjust my shirt and such after I have it on too. Have you tried putting it on while uyou are sitting down? I seem to have to play with it less if I put him in while I am still sitting. Just a thought :)
BTW if the link above and Lisa's aren't much help go here.... www.thebabywearer.com I have gotten tons of ideas and help on there. Maybe it will help you too! :)
Have any of you wistled around the baby? I noticed yesterday when I was trying to teach my daughter how to wistle that Caedan likes it. He smiles like crazy every time I wistle LOL

I've given up on the cradle position. He doesn't like to face out and hates it when I crunch up his legs for the kangaroo position. He likes it the way I do it, and it's comfy for me. It's just that he doesn't like it all the time. I have a ring sling and a mei tai, both from rosiebaby.com. I also have a hotsling, but I think I threw it in the dryer or something and it shrunk. :( I don't think it's me that got bigger since, as of today, I fit in all of my PP clothes! :) I almost did a few weeks ago, but the waist/hips on my jeans were a bit snug. Not today! I'm looking to get a KKAFP for when he's a bit bigger and we can do the hip carry.

Thanks, elladee. For us, conflicting information (about other things, too, not just this issue) has been the only really difficult thing we've faced as new parents. My profession is working with families, and this has helped me see even more clearly how anxiety can manifest if you let it.
I bought a Hotsling and then thought I'd have to return it because I couldn't figure it out. Luckily my sister showed me how, and now it's a breeze. I do exactly what elladee described. But since the Hotsling has a padded edge, now that T's older, I can arrange his head so it's supported by the edge and kinda sticking out like in the pictures elladee linked to.
lynnh, I'm completely new to the world of baby carriers, but I am also looking forward to the hip carry b/c I think it will be more comfortable for me. My Hotsling is great, but it does strain my back a bit (T's a hefty boy, and I'm a super petite). I'll be looking into the different carriers (and searching these boards) when that time comes.

I have been missing for awhile, my boy turned into a fuss monster a few weeks ago, started refusing to eat and my fears were confirmed, count us into the acid reflux crowd. We are now on Zantac and he seems to be better but we still have a few bouts of this a day:

I have having more trouble with my milk supply now, it went way down and is slowly getting back to where it should be.
STTN Before the reflux got bad, he would sleep for a 5 hour stretch every night, which is Sears definition of STTN. He did it last night and the night before, I hope it is coming back, it makes a huge difference for me and would be nice for him to get in that habit before I return to work on April 24th.
Pacifer/B]Count us in. He has been hooked on his Soothie pacis from the beginning (the ones from the hospital, luckily they sell them at Target and BRU). Lately, he has been needed them less, I am hoping he is self weaning. Just sometimes late at night and during the day when he wants to go to sleep.
[B]TeethingNo signs here but M's cousin who is 1 month older is having major signs.
LaughingNot yet but when he is really happy he makes Chewbacca like sounds so I think it is coming soon.

This weekend we went on our first overnight trip to my parents house. It was quite an ordeal to get all packed up. With a baby and a dog, the car was full so it made me wonder if we are going to need to break down and buy a minivan when we have another baby. QOTD - Right after Audrey was born, I was like "it's going to be SEVERAL years before I do that again!!". Now that some time has passed, I've been fantasizing about #2. :o I don't miss the newborn stage, though. I miss being pregnant more. :p It's still going to be at least two years before we start trying again, though.

QOTD - We used to say we'd want our kids no less than two years apart, but DH is so excited about the next baby already, he's trying to renegotiate. :)
meggers - While loading our stuff into DH's small SUV after our first big shop at the Costco warehouse with the baby, we decided right then and there that a minivan is in our future. So I guess you could say we've already broken down on that one!
We are trying a new sleeping routine tonight that I'm hoping will solve our various dilemmas described in my previous posts: I swaddled DS really tightly in a stretchy blanket including his arms (I think this is where I've gone wrong when trying swaddling in the past; we would let him have his way and have his arms out, but he startles SO easily, and that's what we're finally realizing seems to wake him up, and that it's not just because he has mild reflux) AND we got the crib wedge that goes under the crib sheet, so he's slightly (and safely) elevated. If this works, we'll all be happy--parents, baby, pediatrician and physical therapist!! Normally he cries out after five minutes asleep on his back and soothing him back to sleep each time is a dance that goes on forever, which is why we ended up with him sleeping in the car seat. But it's been half an hour and we haven't heard a peep out of him!! Fingers are crossed!!

qotd - next baby: our son is 11 weeks old, and DH is already talking about having a daughter!! i know we have no guarantees that the next will be a daughter, but when i was pregnant, he was scared of baby girls (the usual fear of men having daughters, i guess...) i am looking forward to another baby, but not the pregnancy. i still have 15 lbs to lose, and i swear, next time, i am not gaining 50+ lbs, it's just too much!! :) i would also like to try for a vbac, and i heard that 18 months is a minimum....
i complained earlier about having gone back to the every 3 hr wakings at night, but for the past 3 nights, DS has been doing 6+ hour stretches. he has a much happier mommy this week! i really need to start thinking about a schedule/routine. we have lots of visitors all the time (both our families live close-by) so his naps frequently get interrupted. he does fine when the people are here, and once they're gone, he goes hysterical...and then it's about 30 min to an hour of trying to put him to sleep.
does anyone else have a baby that resists going to sleep? DS always kicks his legs, arches his back, turns his head from side to side but this is when he is sleepy, and usually only at night (not before naps). i find this to be a very strange phenomenon...i would appreciate any theories.
today, i go back to work full time :(... luckily, i am home based, and my grandma and baby will be downstairs, but this week i also have 2 all day meetings that i have to commute to. i'm so nervous!! i think if i didn't have to work, i would be fine as a SAHM/W... i never thought i was that type!each month since his birth, i keep thinking that i just need one more month. i'm still not ready to have a different first priority during the day.
hope everyone is doing well! i love the crying pics! here's one of my Ryan:

qotd...another baby?! no thanks! the two i've got are plenty. and with the infertility, i'd say planning is out the door. we've got a perfect little family now and i can't imagine doing the newborn thing again earlier than, say, 5 years from now!
sleep...like many of you, it has miraculously gotten better recently. baby girl is sleeping much longer stretches at night (6 hours) but baby boy stays stubbornly at 3 hours. so we're not getting more sleep, just M! it's okay, though, eventually they'll both sleep more!
crying pictures? how's this?

It worked! DS slept from 9:30 pm until 6 am in his tight swaddle, waking only once at 4 am (and we think that's only because the crib wedge had made him "slide" into an uncomfortable position). He ate, was up for a little bit with DH, and now has been asleep for another two hours. I guess we found a solution other than the car seat! I wonder if we could even eliminate the wedge and if it really was just the free arms that made back sleeping so hard for him b/c he startles so easily. Our ped attributed his poor back sleeping and the throaty/congested sounds he makes to mild reflux, but if he does OK without the wedge, then that only leaves the throaty/congested sounds as a symptom, which doesn't sound like reflux to me (She's asked us if we have a pet he might be allergic to, but we don't). I am so happy the wrapping worked!!
Last night when I decided to try a tight swaddle, I referred to The Happiest Baby on the Block book, which was sitting on my bookshelf having only been skimmed when DS was a newborn. I wish I had tried to follow some of the advice in that book sooner. I think DS really falls into the category of one of those sensitive babies who needs the cozy, womb-like feeling and for whom swaddling can extend sleep stretches by hours.
jjohm DS is (or should I say was? :) ) often sleepy or asleep on us, then squirmy and upset the second we placed him on his back to sleep. Maybe a tight swaddle at night would soothe your little guy too???

QOTD - I'm done having babies! Well, if there is an oops, I guess I'm not. DH isn't ready to be snipped and I'm not going to have surgery or go on BC. But, I don't want to TTC ever again. I really don't enjoy being pregnant and the two boys I have now is enough for me.
Taurus - yay for the swaddle! I'm glad it worked for you. We've been using the Miracle Blanket with Nathan and he's been sleeping pretty long too. I wrap him when he's already fallen asleep in my arms. I'll work on getting him to sleep on his own during naps and then at night. Last night he slept from 9:00-6:00. (knock knock) I love the miracle blanket since I'm so bad at swaddling. I think the nursed tried to teach me 50 times with each kid and I still can't get it to stay together like they could.
Both boys are in their own rooms sleeping right now. Last week Nate wouldn't sleep anywhere but in my arms. I am in heaven! Of course, Aaron took a nap way to early due to his early wake up. So, it should be an interesting evening.

QOTD -- I think we are done...2 is good but if for some reason we hit the lottery and we could both stay home with them and hire multiple nannies to travel with us we might have another one.
Lynn - Can you post a pix of Nate in the carry you are talking about on your LJ? I have new native that T hated so I never used it but D seems to like it and I feel majorly uncoordinated with it plus I think it may be a bit big... maybe best just to buy a new sling from Nancy.
STTN - jealous - dang boy is still up every 3 hours or so. He is really light (15th percentile) so I am trying to feed him as much as possible.
jjohm -- Drake had that same outfit on this am when I left. :)
Love all the crying baby pix...
****
Have not said much about this but Drake is having some issues with his poop... Or rather lack of poop. For the last 2 months or so Drake has not been regular. He has gone from 4-5 days between bm's to up to 14 days. We have taken him to his ped multiple times and he has seen the GI specialist already. Basically, there is not much they can do right now, we give him a couple of ounces or prune juice every few days but that is about it. Our other options are majorly invasive and we are not ready to go down that path. Once he hits the 3 month mark a barium enema will be effective but until then we wait. Needless to say as the days add on he gets more and more uncomfortable. Hope this is just his body leaning how to work and nothing more. (xposted to lj)

Love all the photos of crying babes - too cute!
QOTD: Pacifier - DS LOVES his pacifier. He doesn't go to sleep at night with one but it soothes him to sleep for naps.
QOTD: STTN - Noble sleeps on average 6-7 hours a night straight thru and if we are really lucky he goes 8 - 8.5 hours! He is most alert in the morning and takes 2-3 naps a day in his cradle swing.
TRAVELING WITH BABY: When Noble was 6 weeks old we drove 7 hours north to visit our families. It was easier than we anticipated but all the crap we had to bring was crazy. We spent 4 nights at the IL's house.
We haven't had many visitors OR help OR any breaks since we had the baby which is why we traveled so soon. When we arrived to the IL's house we set the pack n play up in their room and let them take care of the baby and do all the nighttime feedings. It was so awesome to get a break and I just had to get up to pump (I was still pumping back then).
We also had our dog and we couldn't believe how packed our car was. We are getting ready to do the trip again and when the IL's came to visit to help out after my surgery we sent them home with the pack n play and a pack of diapers so that we can have a little more space. Totally see a mini-van in our future as well.
Another baby????: After I had Noble I was such an emotional wreck trying to get adjusted - we had no family or friends and the lack of support was very difficult for us. We would like another baby but plan on making sure we have plenty of support nearby. We are already talking about moving back home and we haven't even lived here a year. It's very hard for us to be so far away from everyone. If we are blessed with another pregnancy I think we would like to wait a couple years. I also will not gain 50 pounds again!!
Weight loss: Has anyone had a hard time losing those last 10 pounds? I gained 50 pounds and lost 40 rather quickly but I am having an awful time losing the last 10 pounds. I haven't been able to exercise lately because of the surgery but I got the all clear today from the dr.
It makes me so mad that I drink only water all day long (no sodas), NO sweets (at all!! except a 100 calorie granola bar) and just 3 meals a day (not high calorie/fat meals) and one snack (a banana) and I STILL cannot lose the last 10 pounds. GRRR!!!
Laughing: DS is sqealing, laughing, smiling, talking and flirting -- we see it most often in the morning though.
TSMOM: poop or lack of - Have you tried dark karo syrup? We put Karo syrup in each of Noble's bottles or he gets backed up as well.
Well, he is stirring from his nap - I have to finish bills before he wakes...
Have a great week!!!

I love all the crying baby photos. I don't have any of Esther. I really want to take some now. :p
QOTD - another baby The other day I saw a pregnant woman and got all sad that I didn't have a pregnant belly anymore. I'm not looking forward to the newborn stage and the healing again, but we will definately be trying for another. We want to keep them sort of close in age, ~2 years, so we'll start trying again probably a little more than a year from now. I, too, don't want another Jan baby, the winter was really hard on me being all cooped up. Maybe a March baby would be nice...

Slings: I love my Peanut Shell(s) and couldn't live without them. Annika is guaranteed to sack out within a couple of minutes after going in. I'm only doing the cradle hold so far, though; I keep trying the kangaroo hold and screwing it up. But the cradle hold works for her for the moment, so we'll experiment later! I can get so much work done around the house with the sling; she's becoming a better napper in other places, like her swing, now but for the first month or two she would only nap in the sling. She'd sleep fine in her bassinet or crib at night, but daytime naps? Sling was IT.
Next one? We definitely want at least one more, but for us there's another issue beyond how close together the kids will be: cost. Adoption ain't cheap. We will probably start pursuing adoption #2 when Annika is close to 2, hoping she'll have a sibling before she turns 3. We're leaving the option of a third open for now. (I never would have thought I'd say that--I was always "Two and DONE!")
STTN: Annika is getting pretty consistent about that now. Last night she went down at about 10 and slept until 5:30; I fed her and she took just a couple of ounces before sacking out again until 7 am. Yahoo!

jasonsgal ~ We have not tried the Karo, but will ask about it. I know they changed the way it was mfg so it does not contain botulism spors anymore but I hate to give him anything but bm. Hopefully his body with figure itself out.
Travelling - DH kinda thought of maternity leave as a group of mini-vacations. We went everywhere, DD travels pretty well and DS was so small that it made it easy.

Ugh, where is the tired smiley icon? My precious little daughter who used to STTN has been waking up every 3 hours for the past few days. I am exhausted. I hope this is just a phase. She's due for her 3 month growth spurt, so maybe this is it?? I am definitely taking a nap with her today.
bottle strike?? - Anyone dealing with this? We've been giving Audrey a bottle of EBM about once a week since she was 2 weeks old. Well, two weeks ago she decided she didn't want to take a bottle anymore and has freaked out anytime we try to give her one. We've decided to keep trying to give her a bottle every night. I hope she'll start taking it again. Anyone go through this? Advice?

QOTD - another baby: We've already talked about how we want another one ... but that we won't TTC until next Spring sometime so that the kids are around 2 years apart. The question remains how many more we'll have though! Having Alex has definitely made me want more kids :)
QOTD - STTN: Alex sleeps about 5 hours at night from around 9 to 1:30 or 2 and then he'll wake again after 5am. So I get one stretch of a good 5 hours sleep - which will come in handy when I return to work on Monday.
jules1025 - Alex had issues with bottles briefly and so we switched the nipple to a faster flow. Have you tried that? Maybe the nipple you have on your bottles aren't as fast a flow as when she nurses so she gets frustrated quickly.
Had Alexander weighed yesterday. He's up to 11lbs, 2ozs! Yay! That means he gained 30ozs in 2 weeks!! :D What a porker!

QOTD - another baby: I think we are done with two. I love kids but we just cant afford anymore. I always tell people the same thing tsmom says, that I'd have to win the lottery to have more kids. I really love kids, so it is a little sad to think I'll never be pregnant again.
Re STTN: Nick usually sleeps pretty well. He'll go to bed at 7:00 or earlier if he is really tired and will have a few ounces around 12 and 4:00. If he skips the 12 feed, then he'll feed around 2:45 or so. All of this is dream-feeding so he really does not wake up. However, the last few days, he has been a little fussy at the 4:00 feed, but when I give him Mylanta, he goes right back to sleep, so I'm thinking it is tummy related and I'll have to have his reflux perscription changed.

ali - omg, that picture is hilarious!! :D We did try to switch to a faster flow nipple (Avent #2), but she still wasn't having any of it. I also tried giving her fresh EBM as opposed to frozen EBM, but that didn't work either. *sigh*

We went through this jules and I promise we have lived to tell about it. :) DD was fine with bottles and then one day, uh uh. Not having it. We made a 'routine' around the bottle so that she would know what to expect. We had DH give her the bottles, not me, and in the nursery with the door closed so she couldn't hear or smell me. He put on a white noise CD with a track that is very soothing to her (rainstorm) and let her go at her own pace. When she started taking bottles again, she would suck a little and take long pauses. He just followed her lead and she came around again. Now she is at the point where anyone can give her a bottle (even me!) and she will take it from anyone, anywhere! I know it's really hard, so I'm thinking of you and hoping you find something that works for you guys!
Question for reflux mommies- How long was it between when you started your baby on reflux meds and when you noticed an improvement in the fussiness and other symptoms? Also, any tips for getting a baby to swallow the medicine? I swear we are wasting so much because she is spitting it out and I watch it run down her chin. I squirt it in the side of her cheek and I have been trying to blow in her face because I read that is a trick for triggering the swallowing reflex. DD is still faster than me though! Any other ideas? TIA!

Also, any tips for getting a baby to swallow the medicine?
Daniella got wise to the blowing in her face trick so now I have to wait until she is into a really good crying/screaming fit. She opens her mouth wide enough when she is screaming and I shoot it down the back of her throat. She swallows instantly and it all goes down. My only problem is when she isn't crying and she needs to take her Zantac. I don't want to hurt her to make her cry of course. So somtimes I take her pacifier out or tickle her with it to instigate her to cry a little so I can give her the meds. Mean? Yes. Effective? Yes. :)

Things are about the same here. Caedan is a little over 10 lbs. I can't get him to lay on his back today so I can't measuer him :p Little stinker!
QOTD- Another one: Not if I can help it. Maybe in the FAR future. But right now I am content with the two I have LOL The preterm labor could happen again if I were to become pregnant again. Thanks to the GBS and me having very active kids who LOVE to kick.
I am so glad we don't have reflux this time. My daughter was alergic to so many formulas and wound up spitting up and going potty way too much, all of which helped her have colic for months. If I had the to take care of reflux too I think I would have died. I feel for you mommies!
We had to stop using the avent bottles too. I use them for pumping and that's it now. We switched to the Playtex Ventair ones. He seems to like them a lot better. Less bubbles in his tummy.
Crying pics, I only have crying ones from his first bath so they are a little old. But Here is one anyway. LOL

Reading along, but don't have a ton of time to post today - everyone here is sick!
Cathy - I saw your post and will post a picture of N in the sling when I can. I have him in it now, but he's not enjoying it. Nothing is making him happy today except the boob. I tried taking a picture anyway because that would also qualify for a crying baby picture. ;) But, I can't do it with the new camer - it's too big and hard to figure out when Mr is fussing. I'll see if Bruce can take a picture soon.
Swallowing medicine: My sister is an RN in the ER and she has told me to squeeze the baby's cheeks in to make a fish face, and keep it until the meds are swallowed. I think you do that quickly right after you drop in the meds. I haven't had to do it since Aaron (my 2 year old) is good at taking meds. I haven't had to do that with Nate yet - no meds needed yet. I can call her and ask her to clarify, if you want.

Twyla - Love that easter pic! Your DD is beautiful! :)
J&K - Thanks for the tips! I'll try those tonight. :) Audrey is taking Prevacid (a solutab) for reflux, but we use the blowing in the face trick to get her to take mylanta. It took about 4-5 days before we noticed an improvement in fussiness. We still had to give her mylanta a few times. She's doing a lot better now - much less fussiness and much less spit-up.

We noticed an improvement with Alex within the 1st week. He's definitely much better now that he's been on Zantac for almost 1 month. May have to switch to something else though since Zantac only works for so long. Swallowing: I've never had a problem getting him to open his mouth since he's almost a constant smiler.... but keeping it down has been an issue. I usually shove his pacifier in his mouth as soon as the dropper is out - that way he can't spit out the nasty minty Zantac that he hates!
Bottles... - I'd try Playtex Ventaire. Alex is doing much better with those. His burps come out easier and they're not all wet burps - unlike with Avent where he was in some serious pain with all the bubbles in his belly. We don't have to burp him forever - he can finally do it on his own (like he did when I was exclusively nursing him). Avent also, I think, contributed to his projectile vomit issues. Needless to say, for baby #2, I probably won't even try Avent but buy the "natural" nipples that Playtex offers for the Venatire bottles and just use those.

anon - DS is 12 weeks today and for the last week we have been doing 5 feedings with 6 oz. at each feeding. We feed him about every 3.5 hours during the day, and then he sleeps through the night. (Sometimes easily, sometimes not...see below!) For the moment he is satisfied after each feeding. I'm not really a by-the-book mommy, but I do find it helpful to refer to the Baby 411 book, and it says that at 2-4 mos. they'll take 6-8 oz., maxing out at 40 oz. per day at 4 mos. (8 oz. feedings 5 times a day and sleeping through the night.) HTH!
Well, the swaddling has helped in that we can put DS down flat on his back now and he'll fall asleep and stay asleep for a long time, but no where near the length of time he had been sleeping in his car seat, and he ends up waking up around 2 or 4 am very upset and it takes us forever to soothe him back to sleep. After Sunday night, he learned to get out of the swaddle, so we bought the Miracle Blanket. (Thanks for the tip, lynnh.)That thing is really the BEST for fail-proof swaddles, and I will save it for the next baby, but I think I just came into this tight swaddle thing too late. I think that although DS still has that startle reflex, he is starting to want his hands/fingers now (even though he can't quite seem to figure out how to get them in his mouth, which I think agitates him even more). Last night we tried swaddling with one arm in and one arm out, but he still eventually woke up agitated. After trying to soothe him for over an hour, we finally just unswaddled him and put him in the car seat and he instantly konked out. I don't think it's that he's hungry b/c in the car seat he slept for another 3 hours.
Maybe it's just me projecting onto him, but I really think that all he wants is to be able to roll over so that when we put him on his back he can turn over onto his tummy and get truly comfortable! Sigh. One day...

12 weeks today!
on falling asleep: is it bad to just hope one day they'll figure it out? he seems to hate being swaddled, and i read dr karp's book and even met him in person, but i think (like taurus) that it might be too late since he has some control over his arms now. it seems to slowly be getting better, so i'll see how he does these next few weeks.
i saw the cutest thing the other day... DH had DS on his lap, sitting up, and he was looking down at his wiggling feet and completely mesmerized! He's starting to grab stuff with his hands if it happens to be there (like my shirt while bfing) but hasn't started to reach for anything yet. i am so looking forward those "aha" moments. just the past few days he's been really loving his mobiles.

Feeding- Thanks for the input. I've been making 4 oz. bottles to start and find that I'm more and more often getting up to make another 2. I guess I have to kiss those little 4 oz. bottles goodbye.
Sleeping- I think the babes will figure it out...at least I hope! Brendan has gone through so many sleep phases, I imagine he'll grow out of this one too. Doesn't make it any easier though!

jjohm and anon - i agree, there are so many little changes each day and they are capable of new things all the time. sure, we've had some sleep issues but DH and I always remind ourselves of this...and that DS is a mere 12 weeks old.
speaking of daily changes, anon, no sooner had i written that post about feeding when DS needed an extra TWO ounces after taking his usual 5 oz.!!

Anon With my first DD, we never got past 6 oz. Once in awhile we would do seven but not regularly. She was HUGE too. Off the charts in height and weight completely.

tray622: how is Jocelyn doing? Did she have the surgery? Doing well now? She's so cute in your avatar! :)

We did have the surgery and things have been progressing a lot better. She actually has gained almost 2 lbs! The ped thinks she will soon be where her sister was at (HUGE!). We are still on prilosec because she has a lot of pain after eating. Thanks for asking! I am glad to hear that Alex is gaining weight too :)
